~The History of France 1540-1559~

Written by the Court Chronicler

After the Genonese Incident Our King was most displeased. We all knew his every thought had been bend on conquest of the italian provinces, and now the it had failed, fortunatly the King set aside the threats from spain, and decided to focus else where before returning the focus on Italy.

The most impressive Explorer Cartier had returned maps from Africa, all the way to oman had been charted, should the french try and establish a base of exploration in east africa, or focus on west africa. There was a lot to consider, things were looking good in North America. Some good cotton colonies had been established, and the local indians had been converted to the one true faith. All of the caribean had been explored, though they had no interrest of the King, extremly vicious natives, could only mean bad business.

The evil spaniards dowed france without any reason in January 1540, unfortunately the war was lost due to poor cavalary performance and peace was signed in June 1542 with Calais and Lombardia ceded to Spain.

But soon it was the decided West africa should be the target of french expansion, inspired by the new french trade center in north america, The King set out to get control of all west african trade. Quickly the natives in benin where invaded, but the conquest was forced to end, because the evil spaniard without reason invaded mainland France, in May 1541 Accra was seceded to France, and peace was signed.

We war against Spain did not go well, france surrendered and was forced to secede Calais and Lombardia to Spain. A day that will never be forgotten...

Fortunately Francois I, quickly recovered. He decided to start a new campaign in italy, the troops where allready battle harded and in May 1543 Tucany was annex by France. Becomming the new primary french outpost in Italy.

Then the day of sorrow arrived, old and tired our great King, Francois I, died 31 march 1547. In his last years he had been expanding the infrastructure in france. The day after Henry II was crowned King of France, a new era was about to begin. He was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, and he was son of Francis I and Claude de France.

post-4-1078350520.gif

Henry was very impresssed with the colonies his predecessor had founded, he decided to wow his life to conquer Africa. In February 1551 war was declared, and Benin was annexed by France in May 1554, soon followed by Ashanti in December 1555. He started mass conversion in the new colonies, but because of many revolts every missionary failed. In NA he had more luck and a minor expansion was succesfull.

In February 1558, Henry II our Great King annexed the african nations of Songhai and Mali, and declared that all west african trade was now under control by the French Crown.

In a terrible accident, Henry II died in 1559. King Henry's eye was pierced by a sliver that penetrated the brain, from the shattered lance of Gabriel Montgomery, captain of the King's Guard. Henry II was known as the conquer of west africa and also as an avid hunter and participant in jousting tournaments.

~The History of France 1559-1589~

The War of Religion
Written by the Court Chronicler for Henry IV

During the War of Religion the French Royal Library was burned to the ground, when Henry IV accended the Throne, he commanded everything to be rewritten. here follow's the tales of the religious wars that struck France after Henri II's death.

-

It took forty years, where France was filled with turbulence, since Henri's sons and other claimants fought for control over the French crown.

François II
After Henry II, François II took the throne, he was son of henri II. Francois II, who had always been a sickly child, died December 5, 1560 in Orléans, Loiret, at the age of 16 when an ear infection worsened and caused an abscess in his brain. King Francois is buried in Saint Denis Basilica.

He was succeeded by his brother, Charles IX.

Charles IX, .
Born in the royal chateau at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, he was crowned King of France in 1561 in the cathedral at Reims, but ruled under the control of his powerful and ambitious mother.

During Charles IX reign, a new product designed to cure ulcers, heal wounds and other such benefits was introduced. Tobacco soon gained wide acceptance.

Charles IX, accomplished to take control the trade in africa, with the center of trade in timbuktu being conquered by France, he lead some small wars against Genoa, Papal States and Baden, but all ended with no gains.

Under Charles IX The Wars of Religion, between Protestants and Catholics, began in 1562. The St-Bartholomew's Eve Massacre of Protestants took place in Paris in 1572.

Charles proved a weak king in the shadow of his mother and died at Vincennes, Val-de-Marne in 1574.

He was succeeded by his brother Henri III.

Henri III
Henri III was born Edouard-Alexandre at the Royal Palace of Fontainbleau, Seine-et-Marne, the son of King Henri II and Catherine de Medici. He was elected king of Poland in 1573 but shortly after, at the death of his brother Charles IX, he returned to France. He was crowned King of France in 1575 in the cathedral at Reims.
Prior to ascending to the throne, he was a leader of the royal army in the French Wars of Religion against the Protestants. While still duke, he aided his mother in the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre in which thousands of Huguenots were killed; his reign as king would see France in constant turmoil over religion.

In 1576, King Henri III signed the Edict of Beaulieu granting minor concessions to the Protestants. His action resulted in the Catholic extremist Henri, Duke of Guise, forming the Catholic League. After much posturing and negotiations King Henri III was forced to rescind most of the concessions made to the Protestants in the Edict of Beaulieu.

In September 1582, the evil habsburg in Spain declared a colonial war against France, After losing most encounters the most NA possesions where lost to the Emperor of the HRE. During this war, in November 1582 the republic of Venice, showed their true greed, and tried to gain control over firenze, after some heavy encounters and losses on both sides a peace treaty was signed.

In 1584 the king's brother and heir presumptive died. Under the Salic Law, the next heir to the throne was Protestant Henri of Navarre, a descendant of St. Louis IX. Under pressure from the Duke of Guise, head of the Catholic League, Henri III issued an edict suppressing Protestantism and annulling Henri of Navarre's right to the throne.

On May 12, 1588 Henry III fled Paris after Henry of Guise entered the city.

On December 23, 1588, in the Chateau Blois, the Duke of Guise arrived in the council chamber where his brother the Cardinal waited. He was told that the King wished to see him in the private room adjoining the King’s bedroom. There, guardsmen murdered him, and then the Cardinal. In order to make sure that no contender for the French throne was free to act against him, the king had the Duke’s son imprisoned. Though deceitful and cruel, the Duke of Guise was highly popular in France and the citizenry turned against the king for the murders. The French Parliament instituted criminal charges against the king, and he fled Paris to join forces with Henry of Navarre.

On August 1, 1589, Henri III, lodged with his army in Saint-Cloud, Hauts-de-Seine, prepared to attack Paris when a young fanatical monk named Jacques Clément, carrying false papers, was granted access to deliver important documents to the king. The monk gave the king a bundle of papers and stated he had a secret message to deliver. The king signaled for his attendants to step back for privacy and Clément whispered in his ear while plunging a knife in his stomach. At first the wound did not appear fatal but the King commanded all his officers around him that in the event he did not survive, they were to be loyal to Henri of Navarre as their new king. The following morning, King Henri III of France died, the day he was to have launched the assault to retake Paris.

Although he had been married on February 13, 1575 to Louise de Lorraine-Vaudémont, and expected to produce an heir, the homosexual King Henri III was not highly respected by the citizens or the nobility as he paraded around dressed in women's clothes, accompanied by a number of youthful male attendants referred to as his mignons (darlings).

Henri III was interred in the Saint Denis Basilica. Childless, he was the last of the Valois kings.

Henri of Navarre succeeded him as Henri IV, the first of the Bourbon kings.

~The History of France 1589-1610~

The Bourbon Dynasty
Written by the Court Chronicler for Louis XIII

Henry IV was King of France from 1589-1610, the first of the Bourbon kings of France. He was the son of Antoine de Bourbon and Jeanne d'Albret, Queen of Navarre. Henry was born in Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the southwest of France.

-

During his reign, Henri IV worked to regularize state finance, All the wars of Henri III, had left france ruined. He promoted agriculture, drained swamps to create productive crop lands, undertook many public works, and encouraged education as with the creation of the College Royal Louis-Le-Grand in La Fleche. He protected forests from further desecration, built a new system of tree-lined highways, and constructed new bridges and canals. He had a 1200m canal built in the park at the Royal Chateau at Fontainebleau, and ordered the planting of pines, elms and fruit trees.

Henri IV focused hard on the infrastructure, he build several weapon manufactories and wine refinerys for France. Also he began to focus on trade, soon France had monopoly in thrace, alexandria and timbuktu.

He cut the bonds with the english, since they betrayed france in the NA wars. Therefore he laid the foundation for a strong friendship with the netherlands, he formed an alliance and ensured grow and properity for France.

Although he was a man of kindness, compassion, and good humor, and much loved by his people, King Henri IV was assassinated on 14 May, 1610 in Paris, by a fanatic. He was buried at Saint Denis Basilica. His widow, Marie de Médicis, served as Regent to their 9-year-old son, Louis XIII until 1617.

~The History of France 1610-1647~

The Bourbon Dynasty
Written by the Court Chronicler for The Sun King Louis XIV

Born at the Palace of Fontainebleau, Louis was the first child of Henri IV and Marie de Médicis. He ascended to the throne at age nine after the assassination of his father. His mother, along with Cardinal Richelieu, acted as Regent for the minor Louis until he reached the age of sixteen, when Louis took the reins of government into his own hands. This effectively removed Concino Concini, who had greatly influenced Marie's policymaking, from a position of power. Under Louis' rule, the Bourbon Dynasty continued to flourish, but the question of freedom of religion continued to haunt the country.

post-4-1081701572.jpg

When Louis XIII took the throne, europe was unaware what was about to happen. Louis XIII, proved a strong King. His first act was to reconquer all of the lost territory in the new world, he quickly expanded the fleet, modernised the army, and declared a colonial war against Spain, quickly Louis slay the the evil spaniards that where occupying the french lands, and as the spanish King realised he was up against a superior army, french claims where accepted, and a permanent peace for the new world was signed.

Louis expanded the african colonial holding, and ensured massive french dominance of the west coast. After discovering 4 uninhabited islands in the caribean, Louis ordered them colonised and the natives removed.

When the old spanish emperor died in 1628, Louis decided it was time artois was to be returned to France, the new King of Spain, wisely accepted. But this only strengthed the French claims that Milan was to be returned to France.

Louis XIII wisely waited for his the perfect moment to launch and attack on Spain, his field general Turenne had proven a excellent commander, and was therefore ordered to secure the trade cent and port of genoa. The Venetian quickly surrendered to the might of Turenne, and Genoa fell within days...

Inspired by the succes of the italian wars, Louis began preparing to retake milan, again the netherlands proved useful, they send enough ducats to Paris, so a new Army was created for Turenne's second in command Conte. Conte had proven to be a excellent tactician. So with 2 of the best commanders an attack was launched against spain in 1640, quickly the netherlands secured the lowlands, while turenne marched on paris, conte crushed the spanish armies in Milan, and after 4 months the city fell. After a year Turenne arrived in madrid, seeing the pathetic defences he quickly ordered a assault on the city, it took seven days before the city fell!! The second Madrid fell, the old weak Spanish King realised his defeat, and accepted the french peace terms. From that day Louis was known as Louis XIII the Great.

Proud and happy Louis' died in 1643, his wife Anne, had given him a strong son. When he died she acted as regent for their five-year-old son, Louis XIV our beloved Sun King.

Recent Venetian Purchases…

In the year of 1700 Venetian diplomats made overtures to the Spanish government regarding a purchase of certain provinces in Northern South America. A bargain was struck and both nations agreed to resolve the matter peacefully although it almost came to worse during the negotiations. Meanwhile Danish representatives had been offering to sell an adjacent trade post to Venice and in the same year a sum was agreed upon.

An update of events...

While Swedish troops were pillaging through the Stadtholder’s Radthuus in Amsterdam one parchment filled with writing fell into the a smouldering fire and was destroyed without it being more noticed by the Swedish mercenaries than it had been by the Dutch administration in the pre-war years. There were however copies of the exact same document in the registrars office in Paris and Venice to prove it had indeed been made available, if not heeded, by Dutch decisionmakers. The reading of the document was the following:

To the Republic of Holland

The Republic of Venice, the Protector of the Italian peoples, plead with the Republic of Holland to yield her control of her Italian subjects on Corsica and grant them their freedom, just like the Dutch people were granted their freedom not too long ago. Holland established her control of this island without conferring or informing us about her decision to do this. We think it hard to believe that a similar treatment of Dutch subjects would have been acceptable to Holland and therefore hope for a peaceful solution to the situation. We look forward to hear the, hopefully positive, reaction to this plea.

Signed
The Doge and the Republic of Venice

The Russian Chronicle 1700-1720

One of the great deeds of Pyotr I Veliky was ordering a great chronicle to be made of russian history. In our mythical history (OOC: Pre-1700) we have managed to hold all orthodox land, except for our distant cousins, the Moldavians, who even still suffer under the yoke of the heathen turks. Many glorious wars have been fought and lands discovered in myths, but our modern nation is a mighty stronghold of orthodox faith that spans from the White and Black seas to the Pacific.

But let me tell you about these last two decades instead. When the Czar Pyotr asked me to start this grand work of recording our history, we were at war in Crimea as Czar had decided to conquer all those mongols that had oppressed us in the past and make them honour the true god, instead of their heathen practices. However, the heathen turk protectors of the Crimean mongols were too strong. Many russians died valiantly in the service of Rodina, but no avail, we had to accept that the Crimeans were under turkish yoke. So Czar instead projected his plans into central Asia, where the mongol horde of Nogai, who were also descendants of our oppressors yet lingered. Czar sent his trusted general M. Golitsyn with the mission to conquer the Nogai Horde. The mongols fell like wheat before scythe and Czar mercifully let them keep some of their lands. Next Czar decided that Golitsyn should also conquer the mongol lands in the hands of persians. This war was very successful too and Persia had to give us the mongol lands we wanted. Also Czar's another goal of converting the mongols to the true orthodox faith of our forefathers succeeded quite well as many thousands of mongols have teared down their mosques and built churches instead. But not everything was so pleasant, for our old friends the heretic swedes threatened Czar, but he naturually didn't even consider giving in to those threats. Because of this the swedes ordered their lapdogs the danes to declare war. But as the danish diplomat was clearly a drunkard and a fool, the declaration ended up into the Commonwealth of Poland-Lithuania instead. The polish fought gloriously, but failed to win against superior numbers and had to give a portion of Lithuania, Belarus, to Sweden. Czar is now reconsidering the threat the heretics of Sweden and Denmark pose. They should know better than provoke the great Russian Bear.

- Written by the Imperial scribe Byakovski, on the request of Czar Pyotr I Veliky

From ‘A history of Portugal, the rise and fall and rise of a Merchant Empire’ second edition.

Unlike many nations in this period, Portugal was a strongly centralised state under the control of not just the King, but an elected council. The Monarch retained control of such things as diplomacy with other nations and deciding the foreign policy of the country, but the council controlled all domestic affairs. This situation, while having some flaws, worked remarkable well, insuring peace and prosperity amongst a large area of the Portuguese empire.

Over the course of the 17th century, Portugal’s attention was focused on two things. The expansion of her colonial possessions in South America, with it being decided late in the second half of the 1600s that all of South America should become part of the Portuguese empire, in order to harness the great wealth that the continent brought to Portugal. The other area of concern was the East, India and the province of Malacca were seen to be vital to the home country, Portuguese control of these areas brought huge amounts of trade, enriching the lives of all the Portuguese people.

The situation in the East was not secure though, The Mughal Empire made constant war on the southern parts of India, which by this point were firmly under the control of Portugal, which had allowed the area to remain Hindu, and tax free. Only those areas, which converted to Catholicism, were taxed, but those areas were given huge rewards, such as a proper legal system and numerous improvements to their daily lives. Therefore it was decided, though not known to late in the 19th century that in order to combat the Mughal Threat, the Ottoman Empire should be brought in, in order to divert the attentions of the Mughals and to give the Portuguese some peace.

This plan was spectacularly successful. With the Ottomans in Northern India, the Mughals never again declared war upon Portugal, even when they managed to end up in an alliance with the English, who were clearly making their presence known in the Far east, with the establishment of bases in East Africa. Indeed, in the 1680s, they furthered this, by buying the Ottoman’s Indian possessions. This did worry the Portuguese rulers, who by this point were facing troubles of their own in the Far east of their lands.

The Dutch, whom the Portuguese had allowed to grow as a useful foil to the English, had ruthlessly declared war on Portugal, bringing the full might of their empire to bare and had managed to strip Portugal of all her Indonesian holdings. This was a bitter blow to the People back home, who had long enjoyed the benefits of holding onto on of the worlds richest trading centres. This therefore brought Portuguese attentions back to Europe, which she had long ignored being more concerned with events in the East.

The Dutch had formed a powerful alliance with France, and together the powers had managed to dominate a large part of Europe. It was therefore decided, that friendship was to be achieved with France, as long as they sort not to press their claims of regime change on the Rest of Europe, having already pressured the people of Brandenburg into becoming Bourbon. At the same time advice was given to their neighbour Spain, whom had always been a good friend in order to get them to fortify their borders and also to share with them their experience of fighting, their extensive wars in India had given their leaders a good deal of knowledge and skill, even if their armies were not quite the most modern in Europe.

However at the dawn of the new century, Europe exploded into war, as the French sort to press a Bourbon onto the throne of Spain, when the last King of Spain died without an heir and they elected to put a Habsburg on the throne. Austria, Great Britain and Spain fought the French and the Dutch to a bloody standstill and the Swedish declared war on Holland, who called in France. It was never sure what the reasons for war were in this case, surviving documents from the period indicate that the Swedish wanted control of the province of Malacca, where as Dutch missives seem to suggest that the Swedish had no rights to the province due to the nature of the war something about it being a colonial war but the European lands of the Dutch had been invaded and conquered. That war raged for many years and had by 1704 had not seemed to come to a close, with French forces massing on the Dutch border, prepared to invaded and deal a massive blow to the Swedish occupiers.

As for Portugal, she was caught in a difficult position. On one hand, friendship was valued with France. On the other hand, if the French put a Bourbon on the Spanish Throne, who knew where they would stop. The fear of a Bourbon on the Portuguese throne was very strong. They therefore took a middle ground, drafting up an army of 50,000 forces to support Spain in their darkest hour, and closing off all trade with France. Yet by 1704 these measures were not needed, as the English routed the French from the mainland and forced a peace with Spain and France. Also at this time, a document was sent to England by the Portuguese court in order to divide up the worlds trade between them. The English refused and war seems likely between the two sides.

From ‘A history of Portugal, the rise and fall and rise of a Merchant Empire’ second edition.

Portugal in the first two decades of the 18th Century was a struggling power. While on the surface, the nation seemed strong, with a large navy, a well trained army and generous funds, below things were not as good as they seemed. The country was suffering from poor leadership, popular unrest was growing, with the ideas of liberty and equality for all growing ever more strong within the lower orders, even though they were a free people. Portugal’s grip on trade in the far east was weakening as well, with many upstart western nations desiring to earn from exclusive Portuguese areas. And while the navy and army on the surfaced seemed to be strong, they were steadily falling behind and also suffered from having to protect an empire who’s borders were 1000s of miles apart.

To help regain control of certain trade areas, the Portuguese embargoed two of the nations which were causing them grief, but were also not in a position to strike back at them. Venice and the Netherlands were denied access to the Portuguese trading enclaves, which allowed the Portuguese to regain their control in their 3 key areas. However trade in Malacca and the Chinese enclaves was lost, as the ruling classes sort to pacify the home front, while also launching costly wars to reopen two trading areas, that of the Mughals and the Persians. Only the Mughal venture was successful, but civil unrest prevented the Portuguese traders from taking advantage of the situation.

The Portuguese dream of turning South America into their own person province was began in the late half of the 1710s with war being declared on the Merchant republic of Venice. The war was ill planned though and many thousands of Portuguese men and women died, as well as the destruction of a large part of their navy, due to poor planning which split the fleet up and allowed the Venetians to destroy it piecemeal. The war was ended with the lifting of the Trade Embargo and the Venetians once again began to trade in Portuguese centres. Combined with this poorly fought war, the Dutch were also allowed to trade in Portuguese centres, having paid a heavy fine to be allowed to do so.

1724 was to be a red letter date in Portuguese History. With the disaster of the war with Venice and the fall in her trade, the Portuguese had to do something new and radical in order to prevent themselves falling from the world stage. What they did would shock the World….

~ The Holy Roman Empire and Austria ~
shield_HAB.gif

For years and years, enemies on all sides had beset Austria. To the south and west, France had slowly increased its domains and was now attempting to push for a Rhine border, thus threatening the Austrian Vorderlande, and the territories of the Count Palatine of the Rhine.
In the east, the Ottoman Turks still controlled most of Hungary and the Balkans. To the North-east were Austria’s friends, Poland, and to the North were the various independent German states, most notably Brandenburg, who were mostly friendly to Austria, although a controversial treaty had been drafted to gain Louis XIV, king of France, the title of Holy Roman Emperor.

However, things seemed to take a turn for the worse, when it became apparent that the King of Spain, Charles II, would die without a direct heir. This was especially threatening, as it seemed that the grandson of the French king would be the most likely candidate to succeed him. However, Charles had foreseen that this would greatly upset the long-standing balance of power in the world, and thus chose for a Habsburg, Duke Charles, who would ascend the throne as Carlos III.

However, Louis XIV, the king of France, was unwilling to accept this decision, and this lead to the War of Spanish Succession.

shield_SPA.gif
~ The War of Spanish Succession ~
shield_HAB.gif

On November 15th, 1700, Carlos III was consecrated king of Spain, but this would not remain without consequences. Mere months later, in January 1701, French troops were crossing the Pyrenees into Spain, in February, the Netherlands had also engaged in the war on the side of France. After that, one after the other nation chose sides, and a war of gigantic proportions engulfed Europe.

In April, it seemed that everyone who had interests in this had made up his mind. France and the Netherlands were facing the Habsburg coalition of Spain and Austria and their allies, the English, Polish, Bavarians and various minor German duchies. At the same time, the Scandinavian alliance, Sweden and Denmark, sought to take control of trade in Indonesia from the Netherlands.

A brutal war followed, with victories for the various sides following each other quickly, but by 1704 it became apparent that France and the Netherlands would not be able to keep up the struggle. The Scandinavian alliance gained Mallaca from the Netherlands, and France was forced to accept Carlos’ decision regarding the inheritance, but no further lands were exchanged.

Some say that the great victories of Prince Eugene of Savoy against some of the finest French generals, thereby securing the Vorderlande, and even occupying neighbouring French territories, and the routing of the French army in Italy should have lead to some lands being granted to Austria, but in the end, it was deemed sufficient to have France acknowledge Carlos the III’s inheritance.

~ Austro-Ottoman wars for Hungary ~
shield_HUN.gif

After the War of Spanish Succession, some 120,000 Austrian veterans, under the inspiring leadership of Prinz Eugen, and various other skilled generals, marched east, back to Austria. Back in Austria, their ranks were filled with fresh volunteers from all around the country, and plans were made to liberate Hungary from Turkish oppression.

In July, 1706, Austrian and Imperial troops stood ready along a long front to engage the Turks. Turkish resistance was quickly broken in a series of pitched battles, and many a fortress was taken by storm. In less than two years, every Turkish fortress north of the Danube was either taken, or besieged, by Austrian troops. Various forts south of the Danube were also taken. In September, 1708, the Turks were forced to surrender, and most of Hungary was now free.

A short period of peace followed, but by 1720, Ottoman troops were amassing along the Austrian border. Frantic negotiations followed, even the French king attempted to mediate, but to no avail. In February 1722, after putting down an Ottoman-funded rebellion, Prinz Eugen once again led the Austrian troops over the border, and into Ottoman lands. Only 20 months later, the Austrian armies had routed the Ottoman armies once again, and were even laying siege to Constantinople when word arrived that the Sultan accepted the Austrian demands, and ceded the last of the Hungarian territories to Austria.

~ The Brandenburg crisis~
shield_PRU.gif

The Emperor is deeply concerned about recent actions taken by the Electorate of Brandenburg, being the full incorporation of Oldenburg, Sachsen and Wurzburg* into their dominion, contrary to the Emperor’s wish. The Emperor would prefer a peaceful solution, but unfortunately the Brandenburger ambassador had been recalled from Vienna at the time**.

Furthermore, the Elector’s claim to the title of King confuses the Emperor greatly, as it is common knowledge that the highest title under the Emperor is prince, and a kingdom within the empire is thus impossible.
