Are there Frigates and Destroyers or anything smaller than a cruiser? It seems weird just to have small ships . . . I know there are Battleriders and Drones but nothing in between??

Those ships are too small and not cost effective to have FTL drives fitted in the SOTS2 era.It is the lore.

What about system-based defences? or the ideas of screens for the bigger ships? That makes little to no sense . . . bleh.

a human leviathan has at least three dozen battleriders. there's your screen. system defense bases exist as well.

this is carrier-era combat. it's all about force projection, the ability to send your forces a long way, cover a large area at once, hunt and destroy in detail. destroyer battleriders are absolutely an important part of your forces.

System defense boats reportedly exist, though I don't know details. As for a screen for your larger ships...that's one of the things battleriders are for. You just need to have a carrier to get them to the scene.

Though I'm a bit unsure of the benefits of having a screen that will cause you to make contact and drop out of accelerated time before your larger vessels have a chance to close in...

you can afford to take the time. a fleet with no supply vessels or camel modules can still hang for like ten turns on a nearby target (this is based on Patrol missions, not sure if invading/interdicting depletes endurance faster). don't rush things; you're working on capturing areas of the system and controlling space, using battleriders for coordinated strikes on multiple targets, preventing the enemy from bringing you to battle until you're ready or tying up their fleet while you move to attack a planet. it's supposed to take multiple turns.

There are Drone, Torpedo and Battlerider satellites that I know of. I suspect there are also battlecruiser and battleship satellites, but can't vouch for it. these are the bases for your system defense. I believe naval bases have Combat modules that I have up til now assumed have guns.

This is easy to explain. Your being attacked by a stronger force and you have reinforcements one turn away gives you the opportunity to use your battleriders speed as a delaying tool forcing the enemy to either ignore then and take hostile fire while moving in on the objective or slow down and engage the faster more nimble battle riders eating away the clock. Which will give your support that extra turn you need to support you.

Yes, sorry, I should be more clear...

It's easy to see how battleriders are useful if you want to avoid putting your starships within reach of the enemy. It just seems that they've potential to be a major impediment if you do want to engage more closely, even if they are your own battleriders.

Well offence wise I would do one of two things. If the fight was even I would use the battle riders to directly support engaging ships using them as point defense ships to takes out destructible missiles. On the otherhand if I had the advantage in numbers and/or firepower I would use the battle riders speed to circle my enemy to to the rear blocking there escape taking shots at engine sections disabling ships. Chasing down fleeing ships. Breaking through the lines of a fleet to get to the softer ships ex: colony supply construction. I personally will greatly focus on the use of battleriders!!!
