Currently, I think Friends are randomly generated. I think it would be better if you gained Friends based on your actions to specific characters. Treat someone really well and you might become friends. Tutored by the same person and you might become friends like Robert Baratheon and Ned Stark. Lead an army with someone and you might become friends. You get the picture.

I think it does happen already. I noticed often that my sons were friends with people I had mentored at the same time, the chance of it happening must be slightly higher here. You get a pop up every now and then making you friends with someone at a feast you host, or with one of your wards. But a bit more of an idea how it works would be nice.

The mentoring system, tied with a little bit of marriage, is the best method of vassal control.

Try to mentor your heir alongside the heir to a duchy in your kingdom to increase them, or you, becoming friends. After that get your heir in educate all heirs of duchies in your kingdom for that +25 (mentor) with every duke and for those you weren't able to a quick marriage gives you +30. It's an easy +55 with a lot of vassals.

If you time it well (if say your heir is 10-20 years older than the heirs to duchies) it will offset short reign, and if you are super lucky that triple duke who has 50% of your realms levies will end up being friends with your heir (sigh of relief).
