How do the alliances work??? I mean...I do know how to create an alliance. Its just that in the game I'm in now made me wonder how it really works. Brandenburg(me)and Hungry made an alliance in the early going of the game. No problem...easy as pie. Then the alliance expired I hesitated(slow fingers on the keyboard)and Hungry allied with someone else. Not a big deal. But later on in the game I'm concerned about Austria's military build-up. So I check the ledger to see when alliances expire(so I can 'invite to alliance' first). I notice Hungry's will expire in about five years. So I feed Hungry some Ducats. Quite a few in fact. Enough to boost our relations to +200. So I'm thinking--no problemo--it's a sure thing--the cats in the bag--etc. Hungry turns me down. Tells me she's gonna team with Austria and kick my ass. No...not really, but thats the way I felt. After my diplomat tells me that 'we're the best of friends', and a relationship can't get better than +200 Hungry turns me down!!! A bunch of years later the same thing. Monarchs have come and gone. I try again decades later.....same thing. Hungry just doesn't want to ally with me.

I have noticed this with other nations I have tried to ally with. My relationship with these nations are higher than the ones that they do ally with. So whats the problem. I got to be missing something. Could it be the nations already allied with me? I've check the history books to see if there was some deep hatred between these nations to begin with and maybe paragon went along. Found nothing but I enjoyed the history lesson:).

So what am I doing wrong?

Well...you hesitated:D I think that chance is higher to make an alliance with someone who has previously been in your alliance.

Nations will not ally any other nation in the first month after their alliance expires unless its that alliance itself:(

Really? That must be in the patch, 'cause there have been times where I've watched and waited for that day when an alliance expires so that I can steal away one of its members. That's how my Russia got Hungary as an ally.:D

Of course, then there are those times when I've fed ducats and diplomats to a country to steal them away, only to have one of the alliance members declare war as the clock ticks down.

But back to the original question, was Hungary an Austrian vassal? I imagine that could impact their decision.

What I more meant is with AI controllers between themselves. If they have good bonds between that alliance, they may not want to come out of it...

I don't think there is a limit on how many nations you can have in your alliance. I just did a quick thing with Venice, and I had Helvetia, Bohemia, Bavaria, Hungry, Ragusa. So thats six in the alliance counting Venice. Maybe it was diplomatic skills of my monarch. I felt that I could be ahead of Spain in about 100 years using a different stratergy with Venice. Didn't work, and the game got boring. So I'm playing Hungry now.
