I very much like this, it should work wonders for the later stages of the game.

Haven't you just given away the ending of the AAR? :(

You mean where Austria dows him and wrecks Saxony apart with Imperial armies swarming from all directions?

A definite see-saw in that last update, MrT. I thought you had it for a minute and then...well, good luck.

And it does appear that Austria/HRE is near to the good old Big White Blob they have always been known for. Realistic or not, I suppose it is comforting to know that some things never change. ;)

Hehe - yes, not to forget the slightly silly alliance blocks. Why is Sweden allied with Hungary? What would that gain them?

I see the Papal States and Albania are at war with Wallachia as well.

Random destructiveness from the AI definitely brings some comfort that all is normal in the EU world

It can be. It varies from game to game and depends on all sorts of stuff (like the progress made by the Ottomans in the region). Much as I'm sure certain forum members would like to see Balkan mini-states survive and prosper on their own, the odds continue to be heavily stacked against them.

This quote makes me really happy :D . I was kind of worried about how Austria would fair in EU3, they look like they are doing well so far. As for the people worrying about the aggressive behavior, I'm sure that the AI had a CB on the nations it declared war with let's not get too out of hand here. Besides we don't know what kind of culture Austria starts with, so we can't say the AI is acting unreasonable. I know I gobble up lots of minors at first as well.

My thinking on why the AI is acting so aggressive is Austria actually starts with a Slavic culture, Austria’s AI is programmed to be that aggressive to help it become a major power in the region, or the HRE emperor is now smart enough to know they have an advantage over other AIs and will use the new found power to expand with. If you were a German minor I’m sure you too would take advantage of the HRE emperor bonus as well. Sure it might seem a bit ridicules but it only seems fair that the AI is as war hungry as us. Let's hope they are smart enough to keep their BB in check, like a 10 BB stop for X amount of years type AI trigger.

So it safe to say that the Austria inheriting Hungary event does not fire unless x Muslim state takes over x providence in Hungary?

It seemed that the Bohemian king was not as competent a field commander as Friedrich had initially feared.

Might it have something to do with the fact that as of 1455 Vladislav I was fifteen years old? :p

Really like the AAR so far. I can hardly wait for the game itself...

When a province falls into your hands, the previous garrison will have been wiped out. It will then take you a period of time to replenish the garrison. If your army leaves the province (or is defeated in battle) and and enemy besieges it, the garrison will be at whatever level it is when the siege starts. This could make it super-easy for the province to be recaptured, so you need to devote some thought (and forces) to protecting your gains if you want to keep them.

To answer the inevitable follow-up question...no, you can't drop troops from your regiments into the garrison. The garrison has to be replenished via the monthly regain rate (I forget what that is precisely, but it takes it a while to get back to full strength).

Do garrisons come from your manpower pool? When you build or upgrade a fortress, does it subtract from total manpower? What about replenishing a garrison - does that come from manpower, or is it handled differently?

I'm guessing that manpower represents mobile units, and local manpower that can't leave it's home base is handled differently.

Conquer Iroqois lands and you'll only have access to Iroquis regiments in that region until the provinces later become considered your cores...meaning that if you want advanced technology regiments you're going to have to import them from elsewhere...and lots of other nifty stuff. The "realism" trade-off is more than worthwhile IMO).

But if i've annexed Iroquis, they can no longer have a core on the province, so no one has a core on it, so no units?

Two EUIII-related things I've read today that have made me happy:

MrT said:
In the AAR's final instalment, you'll get to see the precise Imperial advantages.

MrT said:
Had his coffers been fuller, Friedrich would also have considered promoting one of the promising young junior officers to the rank of general.

I can't wait to see all the other cool stuff the emperor can do. I think the manpower advantages are fantastic. That should make a French or Ottoman player think twice before attacking the empire in future.

Finally, though only a minor point to most, I presume this means we can promote leaders like we could in HoI. I'm not sure yet as to the exact implications of this, but I always thought it was cool that we could promote those who had gained loads of experience; ie, those who deserved it. EUIII's new dynamic leader system already seems streets ahead of EUII, where if you lost a leader for whatever reason you were stuffed 'till the next historical one came along.

All in all, things are (as usual) looking pretty immense. I can't wait to get this game!

A scary thought, though: the king of France being elected emperor. Think of the near infinite manpower he'd have at his disposal!

:)

Are there sci-fi units? What do Iroquis or Aztec get when they reach max level in land(ie. equal to level 60 in EU2)

Does anyone else think the idea of Aztec warriors with Muskets marching in Napoleonic formations is reason enough to buy the game on its own?

....YES!!!!!

I have a feeling this is not true, since this game is called Europa Universalis and not World Universalis.

Actually, I think it's more like Victoria's leader system, where you could create leaders but not promote existing ones. I don't know how rank is handled in EUIII, though.

And I *really* like the "events don't auto-pause the game" feature. But is it possible to actually change things while an event is up? If so, then one might, if the event gives +1 stability, change a DP setting before clicking "OK".

In theory, culture, techonology, and warfare equipment travels all over the world. So, having those Mexicans with French/Neopoleanonic formations would be developed because a French drill instructed was hired.....

Your posterior will get some relief in EU3. :p

You can assign and un-assign a leader by clicking the leader name in the army details header (the one that you see near the upper left corner of the screen when you select an army) and then selecting from a list of your available generals. There's a catch, though. To prevent unreasonable teleportation of leaders you cannot change leaders when you are in an enemy-controlled province or are in combat. You also can't change admirals unless the fleet is in a port. This involves some strategic preparation before getting into wars, but is MUCH easier than EU2's system. And yes, you can easily shuffle/reorganise armies that are involved in a siege (unlike EU2).

Along these lines, has the "split & die" feature been discarded? This was especially a problem for fleets, when you often couldn't see that there were enemy ships in the same zone with yours.
