This is the discussion thread for the sixth incarnation of the Friday Night NA game. Unfortunately the previous game was unable to be finished due to some players backing out mid-campaign. We play beginning at 10:00 EST on Friday nights, and usually play until around 2:00 AM. Scenario is undecided, but will likely be one of Peter Ebbesen's scenarios. We also take off one weekend per month to allow people to have something of a social life.

This game is played with a laid back attitude, and RP is encouraged. We fight limited wars for limited gains. You are also expected to announce your reasons for war and your demands when you DoW (demands are of course subject to change). Most importantly though, always respect others. I know a lot of wonderful strategy guides suggest you belittle your opponent, and repeatedly let him know how bad he is losing, we consider this kind of behavior immature, and it won't be tolerated.

This post was made by PP, and I think it sums up how we play very well:
Pomerania Prince said:
1) Religion should play big role in your diplomacy.
2) Keep balance of power in Europe. Do not form uber alliance that can smash everyone else.
3) Do not make other player nation unplayable. good example was Poland-Russia situation 2 games back. The goal is to for all players to be able to play all the way till 1820.
4) Diplomacy between games is very important. In there you should describe your changing views on other kingdoms so there be some base for war. We are not looking for situation where Poland has good relations with Austria but is attacked by Austria at the time it is at war with Sweden or Russia. That is a opportunistic war without diplomatic base which makes the game unrealistic. At the same hand we do not expect you to tell your enemy that you will attack him next Friday. Just post in AAR thread that your nation is looking worryingly on developments in other nation and you may do something about it. ALWAYS try RPing when posting diplomacy.
5) Never call another player names or be rude, example (PP you suck or CC you don't know how to play). You can use RPing for doing it. example (Tsar of Russia thinks very lowly about Sultans ability to rule) This way we avoid people getting personal.
6) Use ARR thread for diplomacy and this thread for regular talk about game schedule, rules, votes ect.
7 There is no GM in this game. All decisions are voted by the perm players.
8) Make the game fun and interesting for every player all the way till the end. This is where diplo and balance of power comes in. It is fine to fight huge war which cost you a lot of cash and troops, defeat your enemy and then only take 1 prov or cash to keep other nation playable. Barca is very good example how to do that.

The rules:

No maptrading until 1600, no maptrading with AI ever.
Maximum 3 european provinces taken from one nation per war. CoT's count as 2. Non-European provinces count as 1/2, unfinished colonies count 1/10th.
An nation or alliance can take as many as five provinces from an alliance (but not from one nation).

Dramatis Personae:
Dane Johnson (aka Barca) - Venice
Pomerania Prince - Russia
Gjerg Kastrioti - France
CCbasin - England
Stonewall - Spain
Frank XIV - Austria
Habsburg - Portugal
Hyzenhok aka SlimJim- Ottoman Empire
Fraese - Holland
Strix - Sweden
Lotus - Poland/Persia/Denmark/Brandenburg
Daedalus(unconfirmed)

We're looking for 10-13 players, of any experience level. The game starts Friday, June 3.

I'm sorry to see the last game fade away. :( Are we going to keep the same players in the same countries this time around? Or should we reselect? I'm fine with either method.

In case we are reselecting, my top 3 choices would be:

(1) Spain
(2) France
(3) England

Additionally, I'd like to propose some additional potential game changes:

(1) Common colonial culture. 'Aborogin' usually works best.
(2) Limit to 2 player controlled countries per alliance to prevent gangbangs.

I'm fine with a common colonial culture, but I don't think two players per alliance will prevent gangbangs. If people want to gang someone hard enough they will just take the stabhit.

I have no problem with Culture change. The allince rule is not a good idea. We try or tryed at least to play with balance of power and Barca is very good player. In 2 games we had to form 5 player allince just to stop him. :) I think that allince rule should encurage balance of power. At the same time I don't think it would be nice game if France, AUS and OE formed allice vs ENG+ POR . No fun there

Well I just played 100 years as England and not realy look to playing it again :) so change of nations would be cool.

1) Russia
2) Austria
3) OE

I also think that large amount of players is worth less than their stability and showing up everyu Friday. Last game we had half of players which where new and game did not go too well. Also if you know a person better you are less willing to get into arguments and create bad feelings.

I also strongly sugest we use AAR thread for diplomace more often. My best games with this group where when we had very active diplo going between Fridays. That way we had some warning before next Friday that a possible war is comming and why.

Well, depending on who returns from the last game, I would be interested in playing with the group again, if no one has any issues with my returning.

1) Sweden
2) OE
3) Portugal

Not sure if I can play in this game... would definitely want to join if time was moved back to 11 EST, but I suppose that won't happen? If not, I can be a perm sub.

11pm EST is a bit too late for my tastes. That would mean pushing the game until 3am EST, which is much too late. I'm old and am usually all tired out by 1am. :D

That said, if you all want to push to 11pm and can get more players doing so, thats fine. I'll simply add my name to the list of possible subs on a week to week basis.

How would you all feel about adding Holland as a playable nation from the beginning of PE's 1492 or 1520 scenario? It could be vassalized to Spain/Austria and I'll toss in a couple of 4 or 5 year duration explorers. Just an idea to make the colonization game a little more robust or add another power in Northern Europe early on.

I would like that idea (Dutch Vassal) as it would limit Austrian power at the start of the game. I do belive that Austria is overpowerd at the start so making part of Dutch provs only a vasalss would be nice.

Ah well, but when might this game be starting? In a few weeks I think I can make it perm, but for the next 3 fridays I don't think I can. But now it's looking better for me to be able to play.

What scenario by the way? I really hope not PE 1492 or 1520, those scenarios are overplayed. There are plenty of other scenarios, like those by Bocaj.

IMO Holland should only be released if we play 1520. Austria has a hard enough time fighting France or OE before 1526 as it is. I certainly wouldn't want to play a 1492 Austria without the Netherlands.

Slimjim and Dzoser, you are welcome to play if you can play regularly and show up on time.

Everyone should post their perferred scenario and nations, so we can hopefully start one of the next two Fridays.

Scenario:
1) PE 1492
2) PE 1520

Nation:
1) England
2) Venice
3) Holland

Can I get in on this game? I'd be *very* interested in playing the Holland discussed here, and am fine with a 1520 start. I can perm starting the 27th.

1) Holland
2) Portugal
3) Brandenburg
