Reading many posts here, I understand that Revolution should be obligatory. As leader of France, if I would have a progressist administration, decentralized governement, preventing to impose too brutal policies to people, the Sans-Culottes would even cut my head?

I can't accept that. The same for American Revolution. If we do the opposite England did toward colonies, there would not be reason to have a revolution, at this time, at least ('cause decolonization will be irresistible during 19th and 20th centuries)

Total agreement. I think that France should undergo a period of unrest (how violent, depending on your policies), but if you stamp out the rebellion then NO Napoleon...

I wonder if you can set up a constitutional monarchy in France with EU2?

I was always told that the clincher in the American War, was that most of Europe declared war on Britain thus preventing it from supporting an elongated anti-guerrilla campaign.

It did take quite a lot of incompetence on Britain's side to cause the war in the first place, but there was little one could do vs. a determined local guerilla force in a far off land, with Europe baying for war.

I imagine that these alternatives are already being factored in surely??

Exactly!

EU2 should try to move away from set dates when something will have to happen... The game should at all times behave naturally, i.e. not forcing "time of troubles" upon players when they've done no wrong...

But, "NOOOOOOO-One expects the French revolution!"

3 things.

1) You can ALWAYS select what group of historical events you want to play with.

2) Historical Events are conditional.

3) Historical Events almost always have several options for you to react to.
