If it follows the historic example, the French Navy will remain under (Vichy) French control, and thus neutral as France has signed peace with its enemy, Germany. Of course, some ships in Alexandria that were going to defect to the Free French scuttled themselves after hearing of the surrender, unwilling to join Vichy, and enlisted in the RN, so you may lose a few vessels in the transition to a puppet government.:p Remember, the French fleet, docked after the peace largely, still existed to fight the Americans and British in North Africa and the Germans in Marseille.

A large part of the French fleet was sunk in Bir-Hakeim shortly after the armistice. I wonder if we will be able to attack and surprise a fleet that will be in a harbor...

Well what if the German player does not opt to create a Vichy? Is this possible?

You mean Mers Al Kebir. Bir hacheim was a fortress where the Free French ground forces held out against Rommel during the desert campaign.

Yes, sorry... That's the first name that came through my mind...

It's been a long time since I've last read about WW2... :)

It will be interesting to see if we can make these kind of demands when France surrenders or peace is negotiated. Most stayed with Vichy and when Vichy was invaded in 1942 almost the entire fleet was scuttled.

there should be obsolutly no way at all germany can get ahold of the french fleet. that was one thing even hitler knew not to bother asking for.

Well if they are at a port, say Brest when the Germans overrun them I dont see why not. Yes the French would have scuttled in port but it is not that had to salvage a ship in shallow water. Most of the ships at Pearl Harbor were patched up and sent back out in a couple of years. They could at least be used as scrap Iron.

Actaully they would be used for scrap battle steel :) But I think this could be result of how well you surprised your enemy and consequently their level of organization compared to yours. If yours is a lot higher than your enemy you might actually be able to capture some or all of their ships in port. Of course there is only a chance and this assumes complete and total surprise.

news would have reached the fleet of what was in port and it would have either made totaly sure nothing was usable and was scuttled or it would have sailed off full steam. if the germans had tried to capture parts of the french fleet or forced it into a treaty even hitler admitted the french would probably keep fighting in N. Africa.

jacob-Lundgren is right. When Germany occuppied the Vichy territory (I don't even remember the year, sadly), their troops naturally entered Marseille. A few Tiger tanks accompanied infantry to the naval station there, where the French fleet refused to surrender to the Germans. The Tigers fired a warning shot. The French battleship fired its shot, destroying the Tigers with her secondary 6" guns.
:D

The French would not likely scuttle in port, they would at least go to deeper water to do it. If they didn't fight the Germans or just  sail out of the port.

During the Blitz some Allied commaders were ordered to defend areas already overun by the Germans. But I have to agree that the ships crews would have done something. What about the chance of the Vichy French Navy taking action against the Royal Navy?

In reality, soildiers follow legal orders, they dont generally do what ever they want, if as policy the French government surrenders, and as part of the surrender gives up over a million men to work in german factories or gives up a number of warships, just what makes you think those soildiers wont follow orders?.

Kinda off topic but if you live in the US and are near a library that is a government book depository there is a government publication about the salvage operation for Pear Harbor.

The only thing I recall about the report is the author describing how the recovery crew cut through the hull of the USS California(I think) to get to the bodies of the service men trapped inside her when she capsized. Pretty grim stuff even for a government report. Wonder if the government has debriefed the rescue workers at the 9-11 site yet.

Which is exactly what happened in the French Channel & Atlantic ports. At Brest, once it become apparent that the Germans were about to enter the port, 74 of the 83 warships located there fled the port before the Germans arrived, including the damaged BB Paris & the not-quite-completed BB Richelieu. The remaining nine ships were all destroyed.
