Phillipe stood in the strategy hall, looking down at the wooden figurines on the map meant to represent armies, and he asked the Duke of Flanders, who stood on the opposite side of the table,”How many men can we raise against the traitor?”

The Marshal gave the king a reluctant answer,”About seven thousand, which should be enough to at least hold off Duke Henri.”

Phillipe nodded,”Good, thank you Robrecht.”
His stepfather, the Duke of Picardie, who sat at a small table some distance away took a sip of water and announced,”My visit to Vannes two weeks ago went well your majesty, King Konan has vowed to aid you in this conflict.”
The king stroked his beard, and forcefully pressed his finger against the portion of the map representing the eastern portion of the realm,”You have done well Duke Raoul, that should bring our total up to nearly eight and a half thousand men, enough to crush the Duke of Burgundy.”

Duke Robrecht of Flanders grimaced,”Yes it should be, barring treachery.”

Phillipe raised an eyebrow,”What do you mean cousin?”
“Well, Prince Hugues is son-in-law to the man after all, whose to say that he, or the lady Helie are innocent in her father’s plots?”

“I would say they most likely are innocent. Though it is a valid concern, at the very least Duke Henri sought to ensure my successor would be his son-in-law or grandson, at worst he would kill both so that he could take the throne for himself. Therefore, we must be vigilant, and guard ourselves against his schemes.”

His spymaster, Duke Guilhem of Aquitaine, who was now standing next to Marshal Robrecht nodded his head,”Of course, I will make sure to double the guard around the Prince, for the Duke will likely continue the plot until we defeat him.”
Phillipe looked to his right, where Duke William of Normandy stood,”What is the state of the royal coffers? Could we hire mercenaries to bolster our forces?”
The Duke frowned and shook his head,”Unfortunately I do not think you could hire any mercenaries for anything more than a few weeks, and they would not be able to accomplish much in that time.”
The king nodded,”Very well then, you are all dismissed for the day.”

As the council members filed out of the door, Phillipe followed them silent, and after a short while skulked his way through a hallway to the right, and he chuckled to himself as he heard rain start to pelt the roof of the keep,”It’s as if the heavens know the bloodshed to come.”

As he walked past his brother’s chambers, he heard a woman crying, as their mother was teaching Adele and Emma embroidery in her own chambers he knew it had to be his brother’s wife, Helie of Burgundy. Curious, he stopped midstride, and opened the door, where he found his brother trying to sooth the woman, hugging her, and stroking her hair.

Hugues, gave his wife a kiss on the forehead,”It’s okay my dear, you’re not a traitor.”

Phillipe rose an eyebrow,”What has happened to her?”

His brother gave him answer that would have been comical under different circumstances,”Your wife happened.”
“What exactly did she say?”
Hélie took a shaky breath,” It happened this morning, when I offered to look after Prince Charles, as Anne was being fussy, she glared at me and told me that she would never allow a traitor to look after her son.”
Princess Anne October 1081.PNG

Phillipe shook his head on hearing this, he felt a mix of anger and sadness, for he thought it unfair for Ingrid to levy such an accusation, for Hélie showed little sign of being involved in her father’s treason,”I am sorry Helie, she should not have done that. Besides, what matters is that I know that you are loyal to me, regardless of your father’s foolishness, for you have been a good wife to my brother and the child that you carry will always be safe so long as I am king.”
The young woman nearly smiled at this,”Thank you Phillipe, I am grateful that you give us such protection.”
His brother nodded,”Yes, thank you for always protecting us brother, you are a good king but an even better man.”
Phillipe nearly blushed at this,”You two deserve protection, you are my family after all, through both blood and marriage.”

While Hélie may not be a traitor, can we say the same of Prince Hugues? Isn't the Prince and the Queen mortal enemies? While the Queen may be a smidgen blunt, I do trust her instincts. Is this the same Hélie, who lived forever in @JabberJock14's tale of the D'Anjous? Thank you for writing this history of France.

I'm not entirely sure about Hugues myself, he and Queen Ingrid are indeed rivals, but he hasn't done anything to make Phillipe suspicious of him. Still Ingrid is right to be wary of him, for he could benefit from the death of her son and husband. Yes this is the same Helie, we shall see how long this one lives. Thank you so much for you input!

I suppose we will never be sure, Hugues has conflicting interests, The Duke of Burgundy is his father in law after all, while he has mutual hatred with the Queen, so despite his assurances Phillipe is still a little suspicious. Thank you so much!

July 1082

The room was mercifully cool, surprising given that it was July, though the reason why could be clearly heard by the rain that assaulted the roof of the keep, as well as the fact that the room was illuminated by a sole candle. Still, Phillipe paid no mind to that, or frankly anything else in his quiet chambers. His knees felt sore, but he wouldn’t allow that to distract him from the task at hand, that of prayer. He folded his hands together, tightly clenching the cool metal of the silver crucifix as he closed his eyes and prayed,”Lord, provide us with the strength to crush our enemies, most of all the would be child killer of Burgundy.”
Of course the war had gone well thus far, as the King’s forces under the Duke of Chamapgne had relieved the besieged keep at Troyes, which his half-brother Phillipe, the son of the King’s stepsister, held in his own right. From the reports Phillipe had received the battle had went predictably well, for the Seine only proved to be a minor inconvenience to the men, and Burgundy’s troops were defeated. Indeed, the keep at Dijon had also fell, but the Duke and his family were hiding elsewhere What Phillipe was truly praying for was that his men would be able to take Semur before the remaining Burgundian forces could force Troyes to surrender, for the latter keep had little time to recover from the first siege.

Still, Phillipe couldn’t spend the entire night in prayer, so he crossed himself and stood up, and opened the door. He made his way through the halls of the keep to the dining hall, for he was thirsty and a little peckish. Soon enough he found himself sitting alone at his dining table at the dais, and several servants came to attend on him.”I would like some bread and wine.”
The servant bowed,”Of course your majesty, it will bring it to you at once.”
The servant soon walked off to gather the food and drink, leaving Phillipe alone. As he was left thinking about a number of things, including what to do should the Camp Fever spread from the North of the realm and the destabilizing effect that the death of the Count of Maine of said illness could have on the realm, and the two pieces of good news, the birth of his nephew Robert, as well as the prosperity that Paris had seen, he sat silently.

That was until he heard a cheerful voice from below the dais,”Would you mind if I joined you King Phillipe?”
Phillipe concealed his shock, and looked down the main hall, noticing his former mentor, Arnulf de Hedin, standing efore the steps, and reluctantly waved the older man forward,”Go ahead, I would appreciate your company.”
The man made his way up the stairs, smiling with each step that he took,”He seems to be in good spirits, I hope that he can help me with my own.”
Shortly after Arnulf arrived, and sat at a chair across from his King, Phillipe remaked upon the man’s mood,”You seem to be having a good evening, what has caused such elation?”
Arnulf smiled broadly,”Ah I find the lady Beatriz to be a good wife, not for conventionally minded men, but I would not trun down such a woman.”
He nodded, the King’s former mentor, marrying the older sister of a Duke, even if she was too old to bare children was an impressive rise. Phillipe suspected that Duke Guilhem of Aquitaine merely wished to find any husband to wed Beatriz, in the hopes of bolstering her spirits, which had been in some decline after her marriage with Count of Dax’s eldest son left her a childless widow or of course in reducing the amount of money he had to spend on food, for the lady was certainly a voracious glutton.

The servant he had summoned early soon returned, placing the pitcher of wine and warm loaf of bread on the table, and the man also poured the two goblets of wine.
Arnulf chuckled after taking a sip of his own wine,”I am in need of drink, for just hours ago I was in the midst of Aquitaine.”
Normally Phillipe would have found this very amusing, but he did not wish to indulge in humor at this moment, so he merely grunted and brought his goblet to his lips. Arnulf frowned a little, and asked,”Why so gloomy Phillipe? This is not like you at all, if you were to say such a thing to you ten years ago the hall would’ve rang with your laughter.”
The younger man chugged his wine, and slowly set the goblet down on the table, taking his time, and when it hit the table he cleared his throat,”You are right teacher, and I’m afraid I must confide in you…”
Phillipe stopped to take a bite of the warm buttered bread,”It’s exquisite, one of the perks of being King of France.”
Arnulf gave him a ressuring glance as the king finished chewing,”I’m no priest, but I hope I can help you in this, perhaps I can provide you with advice?”
Phillipe shook his head,”Unfortunately my matter does not require advice, I am doing all I can. In truth, what bothers me is the difficulties that my cousin, the Duke of Burgundy poses to me.”
The older man interjected, with an enthusiastic tone,”Your forces have bested his, have they not?”
“Yes they have, but our coffers are not in the best shape, as the Duke of Normandy has had to return to his keep in Rouen, the Camp Fever has already killed his son Robert, the Count of Maine and he likely fears for the lives of his other children.”
“Surely the war will not last long enough to deplete the treasury, and the Duke likely has less coin than you at his disposal.”
Phillipe sighed,”That may be true, but I still fear this war will go on for too long, possibly giving the Holy Roman Emperor a perfect opportunity to strike at us and take Zeeland.”

Ongoing sieges, July 1082.PNG

“Then continue the siege of Semur, I doubt Burgundy’s forces could take Troyes in the time it takes for Semur to fall.”
“What if they can though? Then they will have occupied a portion of the Kingdom, which I cannot allow, for I would lose face in the process.”
Arnulf took a small sip of his wine, and set the goblet down deliberately,“If the length of the war is your concern, then pay no mind to Troyes until Semur falls to your men, Troyes may be a distraction, Henri may hope to prolong this by drawing your men away from his lands, and thus seek more lenient terms.”
Phillipe raised an eyebrow, and huffed,”So I am to abandon my own people to depravations of a siege in the hopes I can end this war sooner?”
His old teacher let loose a bark of a laugh, and when it ended shook his head,”No, my King, I do not presume to order you to do anything. The chance of losing Troyes is small, while Semur will fall in just a couple of weeks, thus, if you do not lift the siege you may be able to move the army against Burgundy’s men after Semur falls, accomplishing both of your goals.”
The king stroked his beard for a moment, deep in thought,”You are right, that seems a sound course of action, you have my thanks.”
The other man smiled, waving his hand dismissively,”it is nothing milord, I merely do my duty as a loyal subject, now, we must drink!”
Phillipe brought himself to chuckle at this, and topped off his goblet, and toasted to the prospect of victory, lifting his spirits.

Beatriz's life is certainly a lot different than in other stories, especially as her brother has plenty of heirs..The Duke of Burgundy may be punished, but we'll have yet to see how, after all Phillipe's reputation is one of the most important things to him... Thank you so much for your kind words, I passed them and I'm doing well, I hope you are also safe and happy as well!

The King of France smirked as he saw the man in chains before him, the many courtiers in the gallery gawking at, and hurling insults at the man. That man was his cousin, Duke Henri the Second of Burgundy, a man who had perhaps thought himself either king, or kingmaker.

The man was gradually escorted through the hall, though requiring the occasional rap with the shaft of a spear to the back to keep him walking, which Phillipe’s newest commander, a Jew, Meir of Shellal was happy to provide. Meir’s employment in of itself was rather surprising, given the French King’s zeal, yet Phillipe had been willing to tolerate the Jews, they had brought plenty of trade to his Kingdom, which, most importantly filled the royal coffers. The man himself was skilled in a number of things, most notably administration and leading men. Of course Phillipe also saw how humiliating it could be for his cousin to be escorted by a Jew, and Henri looked up to Meir and spat,”How dare you manhandle me, Christ-killer.”
The man simply chuckled in response,”I believe his majesty knows he who would truly kill the innocent is in chains, now let’s proceed if you wish to keep your head.”
The Duke blanched upon hearing this, and leaving many in the hall to laugh at his bluster.

Of course, the hall did have at least one notable absence, William, Duke of Normandy, though nominally Phillipe’s steward, the older man continued to stay in Rouen due to the Slow Fever that gripped his lands. Still he ensured of the Duke’s loyalty, in the form of a betrothal between Prince Charles and Matheode, the only child of the Duke’s eldest surviving son, Richard, so that should she inherit the duchy, it could fall into royal hands, possibly tipping the scales of power further in favor of the crown.”If the rumors of the man are true, he may not have any more children.” It also helped that she, through her mother Ainés de Poitou, was granddaughter of the Duke of Aquitaine, further securing good relations with the south’s most prominent lord. He had told his son of the betrothal several weeks ago, and his sweet, amiable, boy seemed to take it well, though he conveniently failed to tell him that the girl was thought to be rather homely,”Perhaps she’ll outgrow it, and if not, I suppose my boy will have to get used to it.”

He had also heard distressing news from Franche Comte, for Adhémar de Limoges, the younger brother of the count of Limousin, had apparently launched an abortive plot to kill his nephew, Henri de Limoges,”What a vile, pathetic little man, I am glad that such a man is not my brother.” He had also met with the Count of Limousin the year before, and found him to be a friendly, good hearted man, as he graciously accepted an offer for his son to serve as a page to the Duke of Champagne during his time leading men against Henri of Burgundy.

Still, soon enough the Duke was brought to his knees a fair distance before the dais, eliciting a satisfied smile in Ingrid, one which Phillipe shared. Phillipe then rose his voice and sat as rigid as possible, hoping to impress the crowd,” Duke Henri, second of your name to rule over Burgundy, you have committed grave crimes against the crown, and yet despite your malicious intent, have failed to take a single keep, nor did you defeat my armies on the field of battle. Still, defeat itself is hardly punishment enough, so today I decide your fate.”
The Duke pleaded, making eye contact with the king grimacing with each word,”I…made a mistake… please spare me cousin.”
Phillipe shook his head, and scoffed,”You want me to see you free of punishment? After plotting to kill my son, and then rising up in revolt against me? No, you will pay for what you have done, I shall decide how.”

He looked down to the nobles present in the gallery and addressed them directly,”How would you have me punish this louse? Shall I have his head struck from his body? Will he hang? Or perhaps he should be fed to wild beasts?”
The answer to all of these was raucous cheers, for many despised Duke Henri, and no other prominent lords joined his rebellion. The king sat quietly for a moment, to appear as if he was in contemplation, though in truth he had decided Burgundy’s fate days before he had arrived. Thus, he stood up, looking down upon the man once more, who was shaking with fear,”Duke Henri, I have decided, that for now, you shall be allowed to keep your life, and perhaps your lands. I am a merciful king after all…”
He was interrupted by an obsequious display of gratitude from the man,”Thank you my king, you will not find a more loyal subject than myself.”
Phillipe scowled and replied in a venomous tone,”I am not finished yet, cousin…You may keep your head and your titles, but not your freedom, you will be assigned a suite of rooms in this keep. If you behave your family may be allowed to visit, and you may be released in time. But for the sake of your life, and that of your children, do not ever cross me like this again, for if you do, I will not prove so lenient.”

The crowd seemed to approve of this, for while a small minority booed, believing that Burgundy should be killed, most seemed to think it a fair punishment and as the man as whisked away to his well-guarded rooms Phillipe was left feeling smug,”All in a good day’s work.”

You are definitely right, though sparing Burgundy will make him and his family grateful to the king, Phillipe also runs the risk of his enemies thinking they can do as they wish without consequence... It was definitely satisfying for the king, to see his cousin, who thought he could do as he wished for his own gain, brought low for his actions. Thank you very much!

Haha, that would certainly be here approach...You're analysis of Ingrid is spot on, while she is often formidable and unforgiving, it's because she feels like she has to, the fact that it took her over seven years to produce a male heir reinforced this belief, as she felt more insecure than ever.. She will mostly be a good mother to her children, though I will say that she certainly will play favourites... Thank you very much!

They stood in the strategy hall, illuminated by the bright midday sun. The Duke of Normandy pointed to a point on the map, in the southeast of France and smiled,”Sire, I believe that if we can rile the men of county, we can push the Genoese merchants out of Melguiel, making room for proper French businessmen.”
King Phillipe raised his eyebrow,”Would that not risk war with their… Republic.” He spat the last word out like it was a mouthful of sour milk.
The Duke of Picardie chimed in,”I do not believe so, Oberto, Patrician of the House of Grimaldi is a mere child, and has little money to boot. The Serene Doge would not want to waste his money on a war to preserve another family’s fortunes. Besides, he is already occupied by a war with Pisa, taking up arms against us could cause the other Patricians to overthrow him.”
The King nodded,”Good, good. It shall be done then.” He turned to his left to his marshal, the Duke of Flanders,”Cousin Robrecht, if the Genoese declare war I want you to raise the realms levy.”
The man dutifully nodded,”Of course milord, though I hope they do not force our hand.”
Phillipe smiled,”Of course, I would rather not have to ravage their lands over a mere trade post.”
He looked around and announced,”That we all be all then, you are all dismissed.”

As the council meeting concluded, Ingrid who had more or less silently sat through the meeting, adding the occasional affirmation to her husbands points, approached Phillipe, and looked up to him, unusually hesitant, Phillipe gave her a concerned look,”What is it Ingrid?”
She all but stumbled over her words,”I… I have received a letter from my brother Erik… Our father has died several weeks ago.”
Phillipe hugged her, hoping to be of comfort,”I am sorry Ingrid, I did not know he was in such poor health.”
Ingrid shook her head,”He was not, he had caught Typhus in Sjaelland, he only lived for two days until he passed.”
“I am so sorry for your loss Ingrid, it is, very hard to lose a father.”
Ingrid shook her head, and coldly replied,”It isn’t for me. I was just one of my father’s many bastards, he only legitimized us so that we could be of use to him. Good riddance to him, I say. If only he died instead of my mother.”
“I did not know he was such a poor father. Who have the nobles elected as the new king?”
“My older half-brother Knud. He likes his women, similar to my father in that regard, but he at least seems to care for his bastard.”
“He already has one?”
She nodded,”Yes, his name is Benedikt, about as old as Anne. Knud dotes on the boy, I feel that Denmark will be in good hands.”
“Good, I may be able to assist him should it be required.”
Ingrid smiled,”Good, though my Danish kin have enjoyed peace for a long time.”

As the two started to walk out of the hall arm in arm Phillipe smirked,”Have you heard of the good tidings from Aurilliac?”
Ingrid rose an eyebrow,”I do not believe I have, is it not the lands owned by the Count of Bourbon’s son?”
He laughed ,”You mean the annoying old man? Well it would seem that his son feels the same way about his lechery and resents his father’s unfaithfulness to his late mother, the Countess of Aurillac. My spies have told me that he has tried to have his father poisoned, so that he could receive his lands sooner.”
“Good, it serves him right, I hope the man is successful.”

It had been weeks since the decision was made regarding the trade post at Melguiel, and Phillipe sat in his chambers, watching his eldest son and daughter play chess, while his wife was reading a story to their youngest daughter Anne. Emma moved her knight within range of her brother’s king, eliminating one of his pawns in the process,”Check.”
Charles responded by eliminating the knight with one of his rooks, smirking as he did so. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, and Phillipe rose from his chair,”What is it?”
He then heard his stepfather’s voice in reply,”It’s the Genoese, a representative of Patrician Oberto of the House of Grimaldi.”
Phillipe grunted,”Hmph. What does the merchant boy want?”
“Well apparently he offers you one hundred florins if you spare his trade post.”
The younger man mulled this over for a moment and then replied,”I will not meet with the grocer’s representative, I would not sully myself in such a way. But tell him that I accept his offer, and that in my infinite mercy shall spare his trade post.”
While there was a hint of disapproval in his voice, the Duke of Picardie replied,”Very well milord, I shall inform him of your acceptance.”

As Phillipe turned around he noticed the game had reached it’s conclusion, with Charles using his queen to take down his sister’s king,”Checkmate.”
Ingrid smiled,”Excellent Charles, you will be a fine king one day.”
Emma looked disappointed, perhaps hoping that her mother would admire her effort, so Phillipe chimed in,”Try harder next time and you may prevail Emma, it is how I learned to overcome my own obstacles.”: He turned to his son,”Good job son, your mother is right, perhaps one day you will win great victories on the field of battle.”
Charles gave his father a bashful smile, though he seemed pleased with himself,”Thank you for your faith in me, I hope that I will prove worthy of it.”
