French Africa

Exactly as it says. Although I don't think to highly of France in today's modern age, I must admit they are incredibly wealthy in this game. So, as my question states. What land in Africa did France actaully control? I try to be historical in creating real life posessions...... even if they may be before the time they actaully owned it in the game, point being they owned it at some point. So what areas. Anyone know? And any ideas how to go about doing this monumental task......... although if the enemy has land levels of 2 and I have 11 I think there's going to be a massacre in there somewhere.......... thanks for the help

Well, France didn't get into the African game until 19th century, but, if you want to colonize/control a bit early, at the height of colonial expansion they controlled most of west Africa (except Nigeria, Western Sahara), Algiers, Tunisia, a good chunk of central Africa, but basically nothing below the equator (except Madagascar). France also had Indochina during the 19th century (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos), if you're interested. However, just to warn you, with all these pagan provinces with different culture, make sure to convert them fast, as your stability costs will skyrocket. Good luck.

Basically, they had nothing in Africa till after the EU II time frame. They took Algeria in 1830 and then didn't take much more of the areas shown as theirs on the map Alysoha provided the link to until after the Franco-Prussian War.

They did have some smallish colonies in West Africa, inside the game´s timeframe.

Thanks for the map Alyosha. Just like my highschool history book almost. Well yes, I did intend to get started early on their conquests. Same thing with Germany, only snice Germanyd oesn't exist I'll use Prussia, well let Brandenburg do the dirty work Thanks for the information guys.

Indochina I know they had and yes I've obtained the Carribean colonies as best I could. Well at least the ones at the start of the Napoleon scenario. I'm no expert on France so I'm not sure if they had others. I know they had the area that's represented by Cuyuni at one point so. If there's more please share

I believe in the Caribbean, the French colonized Guadeloupe and an adjacent island (I forget the name but it's on the map - Dominica perhaps), the two western provinces of Hispaniola, and they also owned one province in the general area of Surinam (which itself was Dutch, but there's a French colony next door).

Plus there's always Tahiti and the North American mainland to deal with.

If I (as France) end up more poerful than colonizing all that I usually move in on the English-settled parts of North America, and whatever parts of India, the Carribean and Northwest Africa I can snap up. (by NW.Africa I mean the territories south of Morocco's and along the coast down to the other native-settled ones)

In the Caribbean you could mark as historical targets Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Antigua, Les Cayes and Tortuga. All colonies there receive very cool (and accuracy) Frenchie names

Other places that get colonies with historical names are, to my knowledge, Bourbon, Mauritius, Pondichery , Bayou, and of course those of Canada

It makes my eyes bleeds every time I see a french colony named: "Nouwell something".

It makes me cry each time Spain get Tortuga before me and miss out my historical pirate base amist the Spanish Main.

But the worst of miseries is when the English settle Quebec and it's surrounding before me, forcing me to colonize the tobacco rich province neighboring Delaware. The horror! The infamy!

I agree completely! It always drives me insane whenever the Spanish/English go off the colonization path and colonize massively ahistorical places. In all the games I do, the English always seem to colonize the Northwest....... was originally Russia's domain. To bad. And than yes the English colonize Canada and usually take my island of Haiti! BLASPHEMY!

England should as well be filling for the Russians, as the rate Russia expands now (my first GC game), it would take them 1000 more year to even hope reaching the pacific. =)

Well in th EU2 time frame the French did posess Casamance.

About the provs that I like and hate the to see the AI colonize it before me: Saint Helen Islands! The best island ever for exploring and locking the South Atlantic.

The French colony of Saint-Louis on the Senegal river was founded as early as the reign of Louis XIII, IIRC, and the colony of Cayenne was systemetically built up as ordered by the cardinal Richelieu.
And albeit my recollections are rather obscure, I think France recieved all of Senegal after the War of Devolution.
As to Caribbean islands, historical France had an obsession about some sugar islands, namely Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Lucia and Dominique.
It must be that one of the guiding motors for this colonisation scheme was the craze for hot chocolate in Versailles...

Sugar, molasses... and rum, which is more easily transported than bulk sugar. After gold and silver mines, the sugar islands were THE prime real estate for the colonizing powers. England valued Jamaica and the other sugar islands above all the North American colonies. Silly of them - in the game WE know tobacco is so much more profitable.

And the slave trade would probably never have amounted to much without the huge labor demands of the sugar plantations.

Well indeed after the French defeat during the 7 year war (1756-1763 IIRC), French were very happy to have convinced the English to take Canada instead of the French Sugar Islands (Martinique and Guadeloupe.) And now Quebecies have such a weird accent! (Ow do I love being an arrogant French!)

Bad deal for the French in retrospect. Canada now has the 7th largest economy in the world and the former French sugar Islands, somewhere near the bottom of the list I should think.
