A Crusade, removal of a thorn and other happy things
1543 cont.
Year goes as it goes. In 9th of February, Austria takes back Styria from Helvetia. Next day, poor Helvetians pay another tribute, this time 162 ducats to Austria. I wonder from where they get all the money?
In march, Turkey gets Banat from Hungary.
In 1st of May, Austria declares war on us. I'm a bit suprised, i always thought that i had quite good relations with Austria. Oh, guess i was wrong. Wonder why Spain lets their vassals continue their own foreign policy anyway. Not like they are good diplomats or anything. Anyway, we ask Venice to help us out, and Austria gets Spain, Hungary, Bavaria and Bohemia to their rescue. My first move is to seperate some cannons and troops from my main army, also use newly aquired Modenan cannons- alltorgether 50 of them, and move them to Tyrol. Also, i order my fleet to trasport small siege army, left back in Cyrenaica, to Venice.
Wars continues, as Sweden delcares war on Teutonic Order may 29.
In 1st of June, French alliance makes white peace with Baden.
Three days later, my army arrives in Tyrol and starts siege. Shamefully, Venetians join us in August and their leader takes over. So i order my army to march to Styria instead. After all, a nice gold-producing province is always worth of something, especially if it has only minimal fortress to defend itself.
Meanwhile, my army from Cyrenaica arrives and by 14th september, force of 117 cannons and 5000 infantry starts siege of Styria.
1544
Bohema turns protestant this year.
In 4th of February, Venice conquers Tyrol. Just about a week later, 11th, we gain Styria and move on to Austria. Later that month, 23th, Spain takes control of New Sicily, our undefended colony in Manhattan. Luckily, it seems like the war is almoust over, and i'm not worried much. Still, they manage to burn our trading post in Delaware as well.
Our siege of Wien begins in 8th March. In April, a force about 10 000 man- all Austrian army- stars siege of Styria, hoping to regain the city. Venice moves on to siege Salzburg.
17th May, Turkey get Maros from Hungary.
In 10th of August, Wien finally falls to our troops. Same day, we issue our demands: Styria for Sicily, Tyrol to Venice and all the money they have. Austrians accept.
In 1st of September, Styria revolts. And garrison joins them. Luckily, that 10 000 Austrian army is still in the province and does us a little favour eliminating these rebels. Later we heard that poor rebels thought that Austrians are Sicilians and attacked them. When they realizaed their mistake, there was not a single rebel alive. Our siege army return from Austria and puts Styria under siege for the second time this year.
Also, in 1st of September, we send a letter to Venice, congratulating them for finally having a successful war. This brings our relationship to maximum once again. And, having seen the power of Sicily, they finally accepted our vassalization offer in 27th of October.
October 25th- Livonia falls to Swedish troops. Looks like Dorpat is another one of these poor cities that sees more enemy troops then their own troops. Naturally, Sweden makes peace, reciving 56 ducats from the Teutons.
In november, I order construction of fortress in Manhattan. I don't want anyone to get it so easily as the Spanish did.
Also, in 23th of November, we arrange new royal marriage with France. This time we marry daughter of our African viceroy, Alessandro di Medici, with Henri II, son of Francois I and future king of France. Young Catherine is exited- finally away from Africa to see some civilization.
1545
In January, i send another trading expedition to Delaware and settlers to Chesapeak, with orders to start colony there.
In 5th February, Turkey conquers Carpathia. Hungary is most definetly going down, for Wallachia takes Ruthenia from Hunary in April and all allied troops start siege of Magyar.
Meanwhile, our spies from Naples reported that Turkish have improved fortress there, what makes it a bit harder to regain.
In July, we invent metal bullets.
August 7: Magyar falls to Wallachian troops. Next day, a peace is made, with Wallachia gaining Ruthenia and 34 ducats. Hungary surrender to Turks as well, giving them Croatia and Banat for peace.
In September, news of our colonists arrive to Palermo. It seems like both were successful: traders establish a new post in Delaware and settlers establish a new colony in Chesapeake, naming it "New Milan".
In october, we renew our royal marriage with Russia.
Finally, year ends with news of Spanish going after Aztec empire once again.
1546
Saxony turns protestant. I order construction of new cannons: to both our field and siege army.
In 13th February, France declares war on Spain. Savoy, Brittany, Poland, Scotland, Helvetia and Palatinat join of French side, while Austria, Bavaria and Hungary come to Spanish rescue. Remembering their last encounter with Poland, Bohemia wisely dishonours their alliance.
War starts with French offencive towards Austria once again. And again they capture Alsace. But this time, no real rescue can be expected from Austria & Co- they cannot get to anywhere near French, for Venice controlls the passage.
In 15th of June, Kleves joins the fun, declaring war on Hessen. Cologne fights on Kleves's side, Thuingen helps out Hessen.
To make things even more confusing, Turkey declares war on Poland-Lithuania in 4th of August. All but Aden decide to help.
It's not wize to attack someone bigger then yourself, proves Cologne when Hessen captures Köln in 23th august and annexes them a day later.
Europe seems to be going crazy, when Russia declares war on Teutonic order in 16th september. Russia gets their usual alliance to help them, Teutons get help from England and Prussia. Same day, Turkey takes Pest from Poles.
Looks lik whole Europe is fighting one country or another, with the exeption of some small German states and us. And who are we to not follow the trend of this year: Declaration of War. So, in 22th September, we declare war on Turkey. Again, we do not ask Venice to help us. Same day, our 120 cannons backed up by 7000 infantry, move from Emilia to Naples. Siege begins in 13th October.
Meanwhile, France has decided to get out of this war with Spain, paying Spain 190 ducats.
In november, forces from Algiers start sieging Kabylia.
In November, we see another example of why not to pick the fight with stronger ones- Hessen conquers Kleves. They wait with the annexation a bit, but in 30th of December, Kleves is also part of Hessen.
1547
In the beginning of this year, i order construction of 30 cannons and recruitment of 2000 troops in Egypt. Meanwhile, Nubia sieges Nile.
Naples falls to our hands in 13th April. Next day, ambassador of Turkey offers us white peace. We laugh. Instead, we order our fleet to take siege army and head to Sea of Marmara.
Kabylia was about to fall, but for some strange reason (like a bribe to Algerian general maybe), they have abandoned it and move on before the city falls.
In 21th of June, another small nation finds it's end, as Russia annexes Prussia.
From the beginning of July, our small siege army is sieging Samara. Small would be the correct term, as we don't have enough man to siege properly, and our forces just loot the province. Currently, we have no cash as well to build new ones.
16th of July- Poland captures Ruthenia from Wallachia.
In August, Algiers starts siege of Kabylia again.
Our fleet reaches Sea of Marmara in 30th august, but is caught in sea battle with Turkish navy. Both sides take losses, but eventually we lose. Our fleet pulls back to Aegian sea. In 17th of October, fleet is back in Marmara, and another attempt to invade Thrace is made. This time, invasion goes without obstacles, but instead of siege, we are forced to take a battle with small turkish army. We lose, and pull back to Macedonia. Fleet is sent to Apulia, to pick up some reinforcements. In december, Oman burnt our trading post in Mombasa. Bastards. Also, in december, i order siege army back to Thrace.
1548
First thing i order this year is construction of another 8000 man in Egypt. Also, i order a few trading posts to be established in North-America.
In 22th january, we begin our siege of Constantinople. It seems the city is even more valuable then we thought, for Turkish hold their royal maps there and they do know much more territories then we do. But once again, we lose a battle in Thrace and are forced to pull back, to Rumelia this time. I examined the reports from the field when it occure to me: Turkey didn't especially protect Thrace, they just needed to pass some troops through it. Big and strong as Turks are, they are yet extremely vulnerable. To move troops from Europe to Asia or vice versa, they are using a bottleneck in Bosporus. If i'd take a province from the other side of Bosporus, Turkish empire would be cut to two pieces, who can only rely on naval transportation to get troops across. I mark it down to my remember-to-do parchment, but order just the taking of Rumelia this time.
In April, reinforcements from Egypt arrive in Samara and siege of Jerusalem begins. Turkey are still busy with Poland, and they get Presburg from Poland in 22th june.
Holy City is finally liberated in 6th of August. Our victorious troops, thrilled of this victory, move on to Judea.
In November, Algeirs finally managed to take Kabylia from us. To their great grief, Rumelia also falls in November, and we make peact with Turkey: We asked for Naples and Samara, and got them as well.
Oh, joy! Sicily has liberated Holy Land! News of it run all over Europe, and Sicily is praised in every household throughout the continent. But it brings us some trouble: in our council, a question rises if muslim Jerusalem isn't balsphemy. Oh, these troublemakes. It took me a lot of time and even more threats to convince them that if we would even try to force another religion on them, that would most definetly mean uprising of all our Muslim provinces. Besides, we have granted muslims religious freedom. So Jerusalem stays mostly Muslim.
1549
Siege army reaches back to Apulia, and i roder construction of another 20 cannons. Also, i send another colonist pary to Chesapeake.
In February, another 10 cannons are being constructed in Samaria, to support our siege force there.
In February, Poland goes offencive. They capture Bujak in February, and gain control of Dobrjuda in may.
In august, our colonists arrive in Chesapeake live and well and join the local population.
Charles, who has been studing fortifications quite heavily, suprises me once again. Another increace of fortress in Sicily gets us the most modern fortress in Europe and makes Palermo one of the best-defended cities in all Europe.
15th october- Wallachia conquers Moravia from Poland.
In 1st of November, rebellion breaks loose in Styria once again, and once again rebels talk our garrison to join them. Maybe i should put Muslims from Nile to garrison duty there, at least they wouldn't understand what these damn Styrians want. Anyway, both my field army and siege army start moving towards Styria- field army to take down rebels and siege army to take the fortress.
And in 21st of December, Austria declares war on us again. These people never learn! All Austrian alliance joins as well- Spain, Bavaria and Hungary. Venice joins too. Stupid move for Austrians, for they have only about 3000 troops left. Naturally, they start rercuiting new ones immideatly, but going to war wiht 3000.
1550
Scotland turns to protestant. Also, a man named Jean Calvin goes preacing aroung in Europe. I don't like what he sais, and ban this so-called reformation within Sicily, but a lot of people start thinking Calvin has a point. Shame though. Come to think of it, orthodox isn't so bad when compared with these new religions in Europe, so i order more tolerance towards orthodox. Besides, Venice has some orthodox ones as well.
In January, Spanish took control of our trading post in Barahana. Also, i send another colonist to Chesapeake, and upgrade fortress in Jerusalem.
In march, war between Aztecs and Spanish comes to an end, with Spain reciving 250 ducats, Tehuantepec and Atlixo.
In may, our scientist discover astrolabe, whitch helps us to navigate (naval 6).
In june, our nearky 50k combined siege and field army lost to mere 5000 austrians and pulls back to Istra. Field army heads to Venice, while siege army moves towards Carniola. In 2nd july, we begin our siege of that province, while Austrians are trying to take Styria back.
In august, we renew royal marriage with Georgia and also hear sad news: our colonists fail.
Jean Calvin had only one good side: he managed to get the whole Holland revolting. Spanish armies in this area have been annihilated and first province- Friesen- falls to rebel hands this september.
About 20 000 austrians and bavarians siege Styria now. To their great disappointment, winter is especially rough in this year and they take a lot of losses thanks to cold and lowes supplies. Onlu half of them survive until spring. I order 5000 infantry to help siege of Carniola. To my suprise, Spanish have blocked the way, sieging Istria. Still, our troops manage to slip through, reaching to Carniola in the next year.
1551
In 9th of January, we take Carniola from Austria and move on to Oldenburg.
In 17th January, Poland takes Moravia back from Walacchia, and takes Walacchia in 23th January. Same day, peace is signed with Poland gaining total control over Walacchian territories.
Jan 30- our siege army reaches Oldenburg.
In may, another two Holland's provinces fall to rebel hands: Zeeland and Hague. Sieges of Holland and Flanders continue, but looks like they will fall soon as well. Flanders falls in july.
In 1st of June, we gain control of Oldenburg, and move on to Austria. We start siege of Wien in 28th june. Meanwhile, our fortress in Styria is about to fall. I decide to let if go: after all they will get rid of rebels for us. Austrians take back Styria in 14th october, and move to relief their capial. To their great disappointment, Wien falls just 2 weeks later, in 29th of October. I make peace the same day, with Sicily gaining Oldenburg, Carnolia and Austrian trasury.
1552
In february, rebels get Holland as well, and all of Spanish Lowlands are now under rebel control. Next month, Neatherlands declares independence from Spain, taking 5 rich provinces with them and declaring war on Spain as well. Only Austria remains loyal to Spain, rest of the alliance dishonoures. Dutch 36 000 troops, while Spain doesn't have even half that much in this area.
In September, Poles regain Ostmarch, while Turkey gets Wallachia from Poland. Poles continue their advance and regain Presburg in october and Pest in december
1553
Helvetia and England both turn to reformed. I still couln't care less.
Looks like Poles were intresting only in regaining status quo, for the sign peace with Turkey in 26th of January, both sides gaining nothing.
I order upgrading of fortress in Nile- we nearly lost it to Nubians last time- and also arrange another band of colonists to be sent to Chesapeak.
In may, Neatherlands take Artois from Spanish. Still no Spanish troops in that area.
In may, Turkey managed to talk Aden to be his vassal.
In august, our colonists are successful once again.
In october, Neatherlands take Luxembourg from Spanish
In 22nd december, France declares war on Portugal. All of the French alliance joins, and for Portugal Morocco and Mysore dishonour. Still, Hansa, Pommer, Pope and Ragusa come to the rescue.
1554
In February, Brittany took Morbihan from Portugal.
In may, Turkey declares war on Hungary once again. This time Hungary is left alone: only Moldavia as an ally. But another conflict ends in may: Spain gives Holland Artois and 250 ducats.
In July, we start equipping our armies with arquebus.
In September, Russia declares war on Teutonic Order, almoust all of their alliance (Pskov, Denmark, Crimea and Knights) join the party, only Swedes dishonoures. Teutons have no allies.
In november, we ask Venice to become part of our nation. They argee, and now we have 7 provinces more, including 3 islands in Mediterrain: Corfu, Cyrpos and Crete. Also Venice's CoT, though in decline, is still rich, and both Venice and Mantua are valuable gains.
In 17th November, Russia takes Dorpat and forces Livonia to pay 93 ducats.
In december, Hungary takes Banat from Turkey, but they lose their ally in the same month, when Turkey conquers and annexes Moldovia.
1555
January 1st. Charles II died today. He was riding to Venice, to oversee his new lands, but fell from the horse and broke his neck. He was transported to Palermo and buried next to his fahter, Ferdinand II.
Charles wasn't the best king, but during his reign Sicily grew even stronger. We now control almoust all Italy, and have taken back Naples. Also, our lands in North-Africa have grown bigger as we added Mameluks to our empire. Not to mention liberation of the holy land. This is probably the reason world will never forget Chareles. Currently, our yearly income is over 300, we control 4 centres of trade, Sicily has grown and become a major power during his reign. And we must not forget first colonial attempts, and even a beautiful city New Sicily in New World. But speaking of Charles, one must not forget his love towards fortifications. Begun as a curiosity when he was still young, he became one of the leading experts in Europe in defencive structures. Shamefully he never wanted to test his skills in siege, but thanks to his plans Palermo is the best-defended city in Europe.
Charels will be missed. I can only hope that his son and follower, Philip I, will be as good of a monarch as his father was. Time will tell.
