I too would have liked the island empire like Venice, but it seems like you need an additional tax base and the easiest way was thru Papal states. Let me guess - the next step is Luca from Tuscany? This is the only province besides Sardinia that you can get without obtaining too much bb points. Unless, of course, you want to go for Mantua? Hm, I am confusing myself. You said your tolerance to Muslims is high. Are you planning an expidition to Africa then?

Africa... or Hafsid empire is next on my list. I'll just have to wait until Turkey DoWs Mameluks again, and then they will be defenceless. :D But an island empire... i will need a great navy to defend this, but the upkeep would be killing me... Sicily isn't the richest country in the world, gaining about 50 ducats census taxes right now and about 10 ductas monthly income (most of thanks to my CoT).

Instead of North Africa, I'd like to see you annex Spain :D
More seriously, I think you might want to consider grabbing the rest of Italy too. If you already said you'd do that, feel free to call me a doofus.

Sweet victory... and bitter defeat

1507

The following years were quiet ones, at least for us. We start taking our troops home, Ferdinand from Murcia and another detachment from Sicily. Ferdinand finally comes home in 17 July. It has been a long time since he visited Sicily, but he must depart once again: 1 August Apulia once again revolts and Ferdinand goes there to crush the revolt.

In the meanwhile, Pskov buys peace from Teutonic Order, paying 250 to cover their expences.

In September, it is Emilia's turn to rebel. Also, in September i recive news that Golden Horde with his allies from Astrakhan have declared war on Ryazan. Naturally, Russia, Pskov and Denmark join to help them. Not much of help from Denmark, though, i'm afraid. Swedish and English are doing a fine job defeating them. Skane and Gotland are already in Swedish hands, England controls Holstein. Also, Swedish army is siegin Copenhagen, and English one Jylland. Latter falls in late October.

In December, i arranged another royal marriage, this time with Thuringen. Already i am having trouble to find a single European country we don't have RMs with. Exept for Poland, i'm still a bit ashamed to make them another proposal.

1508

Early in January, English forces join Sweden in their siege of Copenhagen. Looks like it's all over for Denmark soon.

In march, we repay our loan. Treasury is down to 30 ducats, but at least we have tax collectors on every province, bringing in steady income. Also, in march Ferdinand writes a letter to Milan, thus improving our relations a bit. A small plan starts forming in my little head.

By the end of March, Copenhagen falls to combined English and Swedish troops, but remains under Swedish control. Soon after that, the peace is formed, giving Sweden both Skane and Gotland.

I have been thinking for a long time: we are relatively safe within our French alliance. But we are just a small minor there, with not much power. Maybe this should change, and maybe we should try to survive on ourselves, free and proud, as a good Sicilian should be. So in april 6th, we leave our alliance with France. People react badly to this, feeling not so safe anymore, and we take a small stability hit. Next day, we form an alliance with Milan. Minor nations, minor alliance, but at least our minor alliance and Sicily is the leader this time, just like we are destined to be.

And lucky we were, making that decision. In 5th of June, half of Europe starts again a bloody confilict, with France declaring war on England once again. On French side, Savoy, Brittany, Poland-Lithuania and Scotland join the fun, while English trusted allies Sweden, Teutonic Order and Prussia join on their behalf. Polish troops start marching towards Prussia, France is naturally heading for Calais and Scottish armies move towards Marches.

Turmoil in Europe grows, as Venice declares war on Savoy in 18th July, picking the fight with whole French alliance. Their trusted allies, Mameluks join, but Persia and Hedjaz dishonour.

In 20th July, Prussia wins a major battle against Poles in Eastern Prussia and march towards Danzig. Within a few days, a huge Polish army, over 100 000 men, crushes Prussian armies and assaults the city. Within the days, fortress falls and Prussia makes peace with Poland. I thought Poles would go to total annexation, but instead they settle with 8 ducats. Lucky them. Rest of the war goes as it goes. English have started siege of Wessex, Scots are still having a fun time in Marches and French are busy around Calais. Calais falls in 2 october, and the war seems to quiet down a bit. Teutonic Order launces a suprise attack on Welikie Luki and captures the city after bloody assault. They move on to Polotsk

As if there isn't enough wars, Turkey start their Third Mameluk War, their alliance Wallachia, Georgia, Algiers, Hafsid and Crimea joining the cause. Mameluks get their help from Venice, who is currently busy sieging Nice and Persia and Hedjad (joined again this September). Both Hafsid empire and Algiers start moving their troops to Mameluk territory. They are probably too eager to help the Turks to notice that their homelands are defenceless. Turkey concentrates on Venice once again.

1509
In the beginning of this year, i took another look in our CoT, after losing a monopoly there. It seems that our CoT has grown, with lots of merchants from all over the globe trying to make a profit here. Quick calculations show that we get more money from them then we would ever had gained from fair trade. I'm not complaining.

In 25th January, another war breaks out. I don't know what Spanish have done to insult them, but the Knights declare war on Spain. As usual, the Spainsh alliance crumbles into dust, with only Austria remaining (Baden, Wurtenberg and Bohemia dishonour). Same fate for the Knights as well, as only Modeans are stupid enough to join them in their mindless crusade. Tuscany, Genua and Papas States dishonour. It looks that the Pope is getting an expert in dishonouring, but that is not our concern. Instead, we have had good relations with Tuscany for a long time, and we propose them to join our alliance. They gladly accept.

In march, Teutons get Polotsk. One could say that the war is going well to them, but it would probably go even better without 100 000 Polish army, currenly trying to take back Welikia. As one could anticipate, Welikia falls on April, Poles move to Polotsk. Another Polish army starts siege of Kurland. Illyria falls to Turkish troops in may, English are finally successful in Wessex, as the Portsmouth falls in July.

Poles retake Polotsk in September, and their main army moves to Livonia. Life is definetly not good for Teutons, as they are still at war with Russia and Denmark as well. Kurland falls on 22th September. Teutonis retake Riga in november, and in november Astrakhan gets Tambow, and Turkey Cyclades.
In november, there is also one conflict less- Ryazan pays off Horde with 111 ducats.

1510

In Januray, Navarra and Helvetia join the French alliance, making it even stronger.
Also, i order building 6 galleys in Sicily, and order our 3 transport ships there as well.

Ingermaland falls to Russian troops in the end of January. Poles are moving towards Kurland again.

Also, in february, i have arranged another 3 royal marriages, this time with Palatinat, Hessen and Cologne.

Some news from Mameluk front: Crimea gains control of Syria. A bit later Persia gets Georgia.

In march, Ferdinand, currently positioned in Emilia, starts marching towards Sicily. As a lucky strike, just when he is moving through Romagna, a rebellion breaks loose there. Ferdinand swiftly disposes the rebels and continues his journey.

In june, our fleet is ready. Now we have capacity to transport 12 000 troops.

In july, Kurland falls again, this time to Denmark. It seems that king Christian himself came and took control of the Polish siege. Russia finishes it's siege of Estonia and moves on to Livonia. Poles empty Teutonic treasury, gaining 75 ducats with peace treaty.

In october, Venice gains control of Nice. It seems a like a great victory, if we would not forget the fact that Turkey has Illyria and is happily sieging Istria. Maybe Venetians look for new lands further away from Turkey..

In october, Ryazan becomes the vassal of Russia. In november, Teutonic Order once again regains Kurland, while Persia gets Kouban. Also, a first separate peace is made, Crimea paying Hedjaz 47 ducats for peace

In december, Turks gain control of Istria. Main army of Venice is still enjoying the beaches of Nizze, and apparently have no thoughts whatsoever to return to defend their homelands.

1511

I order building of another 6000 troops in Sicily.

Meanwhile, Crimea makes another separate peace, this time with Mameluks, gaining 36 ducats.

As i suspected, both Hafsid empire and Algiers have virtually no troops left to defend themselves. I plan a glorious stab-in-the-back, with Hafsid as my main target. I'm hoping that all that waring with Mameluks will keep the Turks busy, so i can get away with this war very quickly.
Hafsids are a small nation, controlling 2 provinces: Tunisia (capital- Tunis, 56 000 citizens, produces mostly grain) and Tripolitania (city- Tripoli, 13 000 citizens, known in the whole world for the finest ivory the export). Both cities have minimar fortresses, and i don't expect much of a resistance from them. Besides those cities, Hafsid also controls Lebannon (no fortress) and Quattara (colony)

So, in 11th March, Ferdinand boards ships, this time with 11000 men and 8 cannons. Destination of the fleet: Cape Bon, next to Tunis.

Meanwhile, war in Europe continues, as France gains control of Leinster. Also, Georgia falls to enemies again, this time the Mameluks being proud new owners of that province.

Our fleet reaches to Cape Bon in 1st April. We decide to wait a bit, as Algiers is currenlty moving some troops thorugh Tunis and Ferdinand decides to wait until they have left.

Official declaration of war is handed to Hafsid empire in 13th may. Both Georgia and Wallachia decide they don't want to fight us, and dishonour the alliance. Still, Algiers, Crimea and most importantly- Turkey- joins. I ponder a lot and decide not to call in my allies- both of them are sadly landlocked and wouldn't help us a bit. Ferdinand starts his invasion of Tunis.

In 10th of June, fleet of Algiers, at least twice our side, trys to intercept our invasion. Our navy fights, but mostly trys to avoid direct contact. In 23th June, Ferdinand finally has all troops safely on ground and our fleet pulls back, taking no casualities.

In Tunis, we fight a battle against small 5000-soldiers Algiers army and after vicotry, in 4th July, start full assault of fortress. We have 10151 soldiers and 7 cannons, and when we capture the city in 17th july, we still have 9397/6 left. Ferdinand moves on to Tripolitania.

In september, a white peace is made between French alliance and Prussia.

In 9th september, Mameluks finally decides to send some troops to Lebannon, province owned my Hafsid empire. Since there was no fortress in Lebannon, it was an easy fight.

In 27th September, a small Hafsid force intercepts our troops, and a battle of Tunis is fought. Being victorious, Ferdinand heads to Tripolitania once again.

Also, in october, i have arranged series of new Royal Marriages: with Moldavia, Pommerania, Hansaetic League and Bohemia. That about covers the whole Europe.

In november, it's Georgia's time to gain control of Syria.

In 2nd december, Ferdinand makes it to Tripolitania. We meet no resistance there, and assault. He had 8 262 soldiers with 5 cannons, and after being succesful in 16th december, he had 8054 soldiers and 5 cannons left. Next day, 17th december, we offer annexation of Hafsid empire to glorious kingdom of Sicily. They dare to refuse! I send their king or whomever he is called into deepest of Sicily's dungeons to reconcider their offer.

In 21st December, Turkey starts siege of Venice.

1512

In the beginning of this year, Ferdinand named me Marquis, to thank me for all the great work i have done preparing our invasion.

Emilia revolts, but i have no troops to deal with them left in Italy. I order construction on another 5000 troops and 10 cannons in Sicily.

In 1st of February, Turkey captures Venice. Next day, we offer annexation again. Looks like spending some time with the nastiest rats in Europe has softened emperor of Hafsid, as he accepts. Besides of gaining 2 province, we also get 4 of their ships, and about 6000 of their troops, scattered all over the world. That's good news. Bad news is that leader of alliance is Turkey. We offer them white peace immideatley, but they refuse.

Mameluks gain once again control of Syria in middle of February.

Provinces of Algiers are virtually defenceless, and greed overcomes both Ferdinand and myself. Instead of dealing with Turkey, we both agree that it would be perfect time to expand our African lands a bit. So, instead of going after Turkey, we do the most idiotic thing ever: move on to Kabylia. Ferdinand reinforces himself in Tunis, and heads to Kabylia in 15th March.

In 25th April, Ferdinand arrives to Kabylia with 10 000 soldiers and 5 cannons and engages Algier's 6000 cavalry. He wins and starts the assault on the same day. Another thing happenes the same day: Venice offeres peace to Turkey, giving them Cyclades and Illyria.

In 2nd May, rebels in Emilia just seem to quit. Maybe they got bored for there was no-one around to kill them?

In 13th of May, Ferdinand gains control of Kabylia. The war has lasted for a year now, and we seem to be extremely victorious, but i'm worried. Ferdinand insits of taking some more Algerian lands, but i want him to move towards their capital and force them out of the war. For the first time, Ferdinand doesn't listen to my advice and moves on to Aures. Luckily, Algerians intercept him and force him to another battle. Suddely, even Ferdinand realizes that this war may drag too far before we can end this, and moves to Al-Djazair, capital of Algiers. He arrives there in september, but Algerians have takes a toll on his forces, so he has only 7000/2 left. Naturally, his assault fails and i order troops from Sicily as reinforcements.

At the same time, Algeirans are trying to retake Kabylia, but are avoiding battle with Ferdinand.

In 1st November, i hear most terrible news: Turkey makes peace with Mameluks, them paying 51 ducats. Now there are only 2 countries left to fight Turkish alliance: us and Hedjaz. Luckily, Turks turn their attention to Hedjaz first and capture Jordan in 22th December.

1513

In 8th of February, Ferdinand, reinforced by new troops, assaults the city again, and this time is successful. We offer Algiers peace, demanding Kabylia, and 500 ducats. We get Kabylia, but only 20 ducats. Ferdinand moves to Kabylia
Same day, we offer another white peace to Turkey, but they reject once again. Hedjaz are not doing any better: they seem to have no troops left and in 12th February, Turkey captures Arabia as well.

One news that would have been a great intrest to me in another time, but now i just let it slip by: Portugal declares war on Poland-Lithuania. I didn't even notice who were involved. Also, France makes peace with England, gaining Calais, and Venice gets 17 ducats from Savoy.

In april, Ferdinand with 14 000 men and 11 cannons boards our fleet and heads towards Greece. We hope to take enough of Turkish land to force a white peace.

In 15th May, Tabuk falls and Turkey's troops head towards Mekkah, where they reach about a month later and start siege of the city.

In june, Teutons cede Ingermaland to Denmark. Also, our fleet has reached his positions and Ferdinand starts moving towards Albania.

In 3d July, Turkey lands his first invasion: 5000 soldiers in Tripoli. They start marching towards Tunis a few weeks later, but another 4000 soldiers comes to siege Tripoli in 29th July.

In 30th July we assault Albania. The turks seems to have much higer morale then us, and our troops are tired of constant war, so we fail.

In 2nd August, Turkey makes peace with Hedjaz, gaining Tabuk. Now we stand alone. 2 days later, invasion from Crimea starts and soon Tunis is under siege.

In september, Ferdinand trys another assault on Albania, and is once again thrown back. This is getting really troublesome now...

In november, Turkey trys it's first invasion in Italy- they land a small task force in Apulia. Luckily i had an army in this province (waiting to board ships and head to Albania)- so the Turks were beaten back to the sea.

Ferdinand starts another assault in 29th december.

1514

His assault finally fails in 14 January. Same day i decide that the war is lost, and try to get away as clean as possible. So, i take a loan of 200 ducats, and offer 250 ducats to Turkey for peace. Once again, they refuse. I'm getting really starting to be concerned, and i should be: in 19th January, Turkey lands 10000/1000 army in Apulia, throws back my units and starts siege. I use 200 ducats with only reasonable way: raise armies everywhere, though it's already cleat that there is nothing i can do to stop the Turks. To my horror, Turks, instead of sieging Apulia, move on to Naples.

In February, i have gathered 5000 soldiers in Africa, and sent them to relive Tunis, sieged by Crimea. To make things even worse, the peasants of Romagna decide it is perfect time to rebel, and a new rebellion breaks loose in 1st march.

At least one good news: Turkey abandons siege of Tripolitania. But in 15th March, our troops send to help Tunis are completely annihilated.

In 13th April, Ferdinand trys another assault, but looses once again. And he is stuck in Albania: all our coastline is patrolled by Turkish warships and i do not dare to move my fleet to rescue him.

In 6th June, another 2000 Turks invade Apulia, but are beaten back this time. Few weeks later, a larger, 3000/4000/20 Turkish force lands there. I have 13 000 infantry to stop them. Looks like i'm going to win this battle, but i have no time.

In 11th July, Napoli falls to Turkey. I see that there is no hope winning this war, and offer Naples to Turkey. Once again they refuse.

News of Turkey's refusal spead all over Sicily, and many people start making preparations to leave our island, to seek a better place to live in. But even more people start learning Turkish.

In 13th July, Tunis falls to Crimea. It seems that the war couldn't go any worse, but in the same day, ambassador or Turkey hands me their offer for peace: they demand Naples and what's left of our treasury: 25 ducats. I have no other choice but to accept. Next day, we are at peace. But at what cost: Naples, most beautiful city in the world, lost to us. And lost to these heathens.

To look back on this war: we started off victoriously. Within half a year, i had my goal: conqued Hafsids, fulfilled. Final annexation took until 3/4 of a year, but it was still about as fast as i expected. But then, instead of dealing with Turkey, i had to take on the Algiers first. That probably was my biggest mistake and i should have tryed to take Turkey while he was still busy with multiple wars. Maybe i would have ended better that way... But still, Sicily has a foothold in Africa, total 3 provinces. Not bad for a small nation. The question is: is the loss of Naples too high price to pay? Time will tell. Now our empire is truly divided: 3 provinces in Africa, 3 in South-Italy and 2 in North-Italy, divided by Naples. Also, i have a loan, taken in the last year, and have to repay it. No doubt that income for the next 5 years will go for this cause only. But now i have a new goal: throw Turkey out of Italy, regain Naples and show these bastards a lesson. It will happen sooner or later, for sooner or later Turkey goes after Mameluks again. And then it comes a perfect time to stab them in the back good-old-fashionied Sicilian way.

Mothing else happened this year. My fleet picked up Ferdinand, who was also devastated by this loss. Still, he went to Romagnia and cleared it of rebels. And on 27th december, i have arranged royal marriage with Prussia.

Nice AAR. You certainly have a job ahead of you. BTW I like this quote:
Lucrecia was married to a 56-years old count Frederico of Something. Everyone expected Lucrecia to become a widow quickly, but to our suprise old goat (err, count), lived for another 20 years. And it was a happy marriage, with 6 sons and 4 daugthers to prove it.
Not bad for an 'old goat' :) Sure her name wasn't Anna Nicole of Something?

Well as the great phylosopher said "Sh** happens":p

Not always what you plan is what will happen and in fact you did quite well, I do agree with you that you become greedy, and didn't handle things the right way but who could've told you that then?!?!

Great AAR, and a very excentric variation of the typical big power world conquest.

good luck and try focus first in Italy, it is the mother land you know??

Getting back on our feet

1515

Half a year has passed since Sicily was defeated by Turkey. Europe is still ravaged by several wars. Poland, Brittany and Scotland are fighting against Spain and Austria. Pskov is at war with Sweden and England, though they lack a common border and i expect white peace to be signed anytime soon. Poland is also fighting Sweden and England, though it all seems quiet in the eastern front. Knights and Modena are still fighting their crusade against Spain and Austria, but not much of fighting appears in this front as well. Portugal is fighting Poland, Savoy, Brittany, Scotland and Navarra. So is Hansa. And finally, France and Portugal are at war as well.

To save our finances, i have cut maintenance of the army down to 50%. I have no plans for any wars within the next few years, and gaining some money is essential.

The beginning of the year starts quietly. In March, Poland makes peace with Sweden, paying them 13 ducats.

In may, i oversee yet another royal marriage, this time with Bavaria. Because we are fresh out of young princes and princesses, i had to convince Bavarian ambassador to take my 43-year old mother-in-law to Bavaria, where she will marry king's counsin. Thank god the old man is deaf, no-one could stand her constant babbling. At least it means some quiet and peaceful days for me.

Also, i have ordered fleet to head for Messina, to bring some reinforcements to Ferdinand. Though Sicily is not at war, there is always rebel risk, so 6000 new recruits are going to Romagna to help calm things down a little.
Ferdinand is getting old, and has no intrest in state affairs whatsoever anymore. Shamefully, he seems to have lost his once so brilliant military mind as well. Still, he is the cornerstone of our army, and without him all our victories wouldn't have happenend. Sicily is knows for it's good troops, but not for strategic and tactical skills of our commanders. Most of the time, i feel that our generals would be best suited for cleaning toilets, not leading the armies (1-0-1).

As i predicted, white peace between England, Sweden and Pskov is signed first of July. Just 13 days later, Pskov becomes vassal of Russia.

This September, an ambassador of Brittany approaches me, asking to exchange maps. As i am always glad to help our friend, i accept. Now i can see a bit of the so-called New World as well. It seems though that Spanish have managed to take most of the areas there. Still, there is one province called Barahona that is unclaimed by any European nation, though a small settelment of local natives exist there. I order preparations for trading with these natives.

In december, things get much more intresting, as Russia with her allies Pskov, Ryazan and Denmark declares war on Golden Horde. Astrakhan joins on Horde's side. I have sent my envoys with mission to watch the fight, and sent a letter to the czar, wishing him the best of luck.

1516

This morning, Ferdinand decided to leave the throne to his son, Charles II. Ferdinand is still a supreme commander of our armies, but he is no longer ruler of the nation. Shamefully, Chareles is even worse ruler then Ferdinand, having only diplomatical skills to match his father's. He doesn't know anything about military matter, and administrative matters work and a bed-time stories for him. Again, I made a pact with him, similar to his father's- i run the state, while he does as he pleases, just as long as he doesn't intervene with state matters. To my great regret, Charles is not even a good commander, and has mostly drinking in his mind. I'll be sure to see that he always has a fresh supply of wine.

Meanwhile, in Russia. So far the war is pretty quiet, only small skirmishes between small armies. A 32 000 army lead by the czar Vassily III himself heads from European region of Russia to Kujbyschev. In his way through Lipetsk, he is forced to fight several defencive battles against the Horde and Astrakhan, and though he is victorious, his movement to main battle is delayed. Still, in July, Vassily reaches Kujbychev

In June, i have finally recived a letter from our brave settlers, trying to trade in Barahona. It seemed that even though the natives were a bit shy in their first meeting, they soon accepted our traders, and now our trade center in Palermo has some suger to offer as well. Minor profit, but at least Sicily has a part of the new world.

Two peaces are also formed in June: England pays Poland 61 ducats for peace, and Knights pay Spanish 39.

In August, forces of Astrakhan started a siege of Kazan. Still, the fortress holds out strong and my wathecers are sure that Russians will be victorious. And as they predicted, Kujbychev falls to Russian troops in last day of August. Vassily starts moving towards Horde's capital- Volgograd.

In November, Apulia revolts again. It really gets annoying. Also, i have arranged yet another royal marriage, this time with Helveta. Main event of November happens thousands of kilometers away from us though: Russia gains control of Volgograd in 23 november. Thier troops head to Saratow.

Christmas should be a happy event, but not in this year. In 24th December, Ferdinand had a heart attack. Doctors were helpless, and Ferdinand died this evening. Even tough he wasn't a good monarch, he will be remembered as one of the heroes of Sicily. It was during his reign when we gained our independence, when we started to grow stronger, when we gained control of half of Italy, and when we expanded to Africa. I miss him, not only as a ruler, but also as a friend. We worked well toghether, he in with the sword, i with the pen. Thank's to him, Sicily is now a power to be reckogned with, not a backwater country with 2 provinces. Ferdinand was buried in Palermo in 31st december.

1517

Start of this year brings concerning news from Wurtenberg: it seems that former munk named Lumber or Luther or something has openly opposed catholic church and the pope. News of his deeds spread like wildfire and soon a lot of provinces in far north have abandoned the pope and started to live on their own. It seems a bit far-fetched to me. Yes, the pope is greedy, yes, the pope isn't holy; but he still is the pope. And after Papal States was defeated by us, Pope has been spent more time with masses and less time with politics. Maybe if Luther could have just waited for a year or two, to see if there is maybe some improvement. I have ordered no tolerance to as they call themselves- protestants- within borders of Sicily. Anyone preaching against Pope will be sent to inquisition at once.

This February, Charles II has pleasantly suprised me: while i was investigating this Luther fellow, he secretly ordered construction works in Palermo, bringing in the best fortification experts from all over Europe to work with improving defences. Thank's to that, Palermo now has one of the most modern fortifications in all Europe, and can withstand a long siege.

In may, Savoian troops that have been sieging capital of Hansa, Lübeck, in Mecklenburg, are finally successful. Savoy gains 62 ducats form Hansa in the following peace treaty.

Also, in 28th may, Russian troops gain control of Saratow. As fortress in Kazan is about to fall, Vassily decided to go to the rescue.
Battle of Kazan between Astrakhan and Russia is fought in 29th july, and Russia is victorious. Vassily himself got slightly wounded in battle though, and decides to spen some time in Kazan, resting.

In october, Romagna revolts. Eventually we win, but cutting pay of the army doesn't seem to be so good- soldiers don't fight like they used to and our forces just barely won.

1518

This year starts with great news: 19 000 man Turkish army, stationed in Naples, has boarded ships. Now Naples is guarded by only 5000 man Turkish garrison. Also, Turkey seems to have turned their eyes to east, as there are no more Turkish fleets west of Greece. Army that captured Naples, arrives in Constantinople and starts moving towards Mameluk border. I guess Turkey is preparing yet another campiagn against the Mameluks.

In june, Naples revolts against their Turkish masters. Since there are no armies, rebels start siege of the city.

In 15th June, i have managed to get yet another member to my alliance- this time it's Genoa. Now we have almoust united Italy, with Florence and Milan. If i could only convince Venice to leave the Mameluks and join our cause, we would be conciderable power in Mediterrain region.

It seems there is no way to notice everything that is going on in Europe. Just today i have recived news that Spanish now control Armor, a provice held by Brittany. Provicne fell in the beginning of July. I didn't even know they were sieging it. While looking around in that direction, i also noticed forces of Portugal and Hansa sieging Navarra. Anyway, Spanish armies start moving towards Bretagne and Brittany decides that the best thing to do is to pay off Austria: Habsburgs gain 49 ducats with this peace treaty. Still, Brittany is in quite hopeless situation and decides to cede Armor to Spanish in 25th July.

In August, Vassily finally decides to move and heads to siege Samara. Province falls in 28th November. 2 days later, Horde bribes Ryazan, paying them 214 ducats to leave this war. Things do not look so good for the horde: they have only 1 province, Uralsk, left, and that is being sieged by joined forces of Pskov and Denmark. Vassily heads there as well, and fall of another mongol empire is coming a reality. Astrakhan decides to help their brothers in battle, and 12 000 of their soldiers start siege of Volgograd, hoping to help Horde regain it's capital.

1519

Almoust the first thing we heard this year was the election of Karl V has the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. What a joke. Everyone knows that Austria isn't nothing more then a vassal of Spain, and has no real power. I guess the electors thought that they will be left alone then.

In februrary, our troops are finally equipped with arquebuses, though primitive ones. I hope this will increace our efficiency in battle. Same time, i finally repaid my loan. Now Sicily is free of any financial obligations as well.

More important news cale later in february, as Turkey declared war on Mameluks in 19th. Algiers, Crimea, Wallachia, Nubia, Georgia and Moldova join to help the Turks, while Venice, Persia and Hedjaz intervene to help the Mameluks. This time it's the start of the Fourth Mameluk war, and since Turkey seems to be as unprepared as ever, i belive there is more to come in the following years. Once again, Turkey's main target seems to be Venice, while Persia is heading for Crimea and Mameluks are concentrating their forces.

In 27th February, Russia finally conquers Uralsk. Next day, annexation of Golden Horde by Russia is officially declared. Russia has gained 5 provinces to their country. Most of the Europe is concerned, but i'm not. We have pretty good relations with the Russians, and i need a power to slow down Turks and balance the situation in Baltic region. War with Astrakhan still continues though, and in 1st of March, just 1 day after Horde's surrender, Astrakhan liberates Volgograd. Talk about bad luck.

2nd of March, rebels gain control of Naples. Turkey is busy, so he can't send extra troops against them. Guess i'll have to help them a little.

On 6th of March, something very wierd happened: Pommerania, backed up with no allies, declared war on Algiers, thus getting to war with Turkey and Crimea as well (Wallacia, Nubia, Georgia and Moldova dishonour). Hmmmm, i guess pommeranians really do want some territories in Africa.

Full of events this March is- in 27th Portugal's siege of Navarra is completed, and when a new day arrives, there is no free Navarra anymore, just another province of Portugal... right next to French border, with whom Portugal is currently at war.

In June, i manage to convince the French ambassador to exhange some maps. This time, i have gained maps of the northern part of the continent they call America. Some of the area seems to be settled by English and French, but i send some more traders, this time to Carolina, Roanoke, Delaware and Manhattan.

In June, 45 000 Turkish army wins a battle against 30 000 Venetians in Istria and begins the siege of the city. Persia sieges Kouban, Algiers Corfu.

Also, in June Russia regains Volgograd from Astrakhan and forces to war on Astrakhan mainland. They have conquered Orenburg by end of August, and move on to Astrakhan.

Looks like improving a fortress was only good thing Charlie is capable of doing: in 1st of September he issued trade restrictions to all nations in the world, not understanding that most of our income comes from fees collected from the merchants in our CoTs. It took me some time to clear things out, but i managed to nullify his edict in the beginning of the next year.

In October, Persia gains control of Kouban.

In November, our royal marriage with France expires, as the count Fru-Fru, cousin of the king and proud husband to a fine Sicilian woman, dies of overexitement. I propose a new one, and French gladly accept.

In 12th of December, Russia finally conqueres Astrakhan, and annexes the country next day.

Some have all the luck...

1520

Turkey and Mameluks are still at war. In the beginning of they year, i summon a war council, wondering if we should intervene and take Naples back. A huge debate occurs, about the same number supporting peace and about the same number suggesting war. Finally- we came to a decision. No war for now. First, we must try to gain upper hand in Italy and strengthen our economy. Besides- or main weapon, Ferdinand, is buried in cathedral of Palermo, and i suspect that assault couldn't be our main weapon anymore. To wage war, we probably need more cannons, we need to make siege armies instead of battle armies. And we just can't afford enough cannons right now.

In February, a envoy arrives from Kabylia, telling news of famile all over North-Africa. It seems that Kabylia was the only province with successful harvest, and the price of grain has risen through the roof. We get 540 ducats from taxes. Wow, that's more money then Sicily has ever had. I did put it to good use: i gave our allies Milan, Tuscany and Genoa each 100 ducats state gift. We had close relations before, but now we are even closer. As a matter of fact, we are probably the best friends in the whole universe. Looke like time if right for some vassalization to be done...

Also, Turkey abandones siege of Istria this February. Turkish armies start moving eastwards.

In march, i finally recive some updates of our trading expeditions sent to North-America. Our attempts to trade with natives are succesful in Manhattan, Delaware and Carolina, but natives in Roanoke had great time torturing our traders to death. Nevertheless, i order another trading expedition to be sent to Roanoke. Besides, i have alrady started liking this new habit- smoking. Much more serious is our first colonization attempt. We send 100 Sicilian man and woman to Manhattan, with orders to establish a small hamlet there and try to make the city grow.

From 11th of April, Tuscany is a vassal of Sicily. It took some time to convince them, but finally they saw the light.

Glad to see my success, Charles has nominated me Duke of Tuscany. Naturally, we kept it a secret, as it would probably take another 10 years before i can take my holdings, but i'm patient.

In may, antoher Turkish army started siege of Istria. Looks like it's mostly infantry, with no cannons. I'm positive that Istria will hold out for another 12 month or so.

In June, we officially propose vassalization to City Council of Milan. Despite of the obvious benefits, they dare to decline. I'm furious, but they are stubborn. Well, i just have to wait. They'll accept sooner or later.
Genoa, on the other hand, sees the light. They accept our proposition of vassalization immideately, and from 17th august, Genoa is a vassal of Sicily.

France has started siege of Navarra, currently owned by Portugal, this July. In August, Crimea regains Kouban form Persia.

In september, we gain a new infrastructure level (3). This allows us to promote chief judges, thus improving efficiency of the law system and also gaining extra money. Shamefully, Sicily just doesn't have the money to do it.

In October, friendly relations with Russia and our nation are finally sealed with royal marriage. We send a beautiful princess Anna, cousin of Charles, to be married with Ivan, son of Vassily. Brrr, that girl needs a new set of fur coats. And a lot of them.

In 29th of November, Ryazan ceaces to exist as a nation- their leaders accept Russian king Vassily III as their righful ruler and all Ryazan lands are Russian now. I'm glad- strong Russia may help to keep Turkey at bay.

In the beginning of december, France captures Navarra from Portugal. Next day, a peace is signed, where Portugal gives up all demands to Navarra and that province is now part of the French empire.

Our first colonists failed. Travel over Atlantic has claimed over 2/3 of 100 that were sent, and rest of them were diseased. Shame.

In 13th december, Turkey takes Syria from Mameluks

1521

I start this year with small grants to Milan, and they think well of us agian.

A quiet year. In february, traders sent to Roanoke fail again, and again i send another expedition. In 23th Feb, Persia gain control of Georgia, Nubia takes Jordan from Hedjaz in March.

In 10th of April, Milan once again declines our vassalization proposal. Bastardos. But all hope is not lost, and i will definetly try again soon.

In May, Mameluks regain Syria. In june, our traders are even more efficient- trade level 3.

In August, Poland and Scotland make white peace, because there hasn't been single shot fired for 36 month.

In october, i exhancge maps with Venice. We gain new information about Arabian peninsula and seas aroud a new land called India. Shamefully, Venetians have no maps of Indian shores, just seas. Oh, well.

In november, our traders in Roanoke are finally successful. Instead of torturing them to death, Indians are busily trading glass pearls and other rubbish to valuable tobacco.

As our old Royal marriage of Venice has ended due to unexpected death of our princess extactly 25 years after marriage is signed, we arrange a new one. One could say that everyone in Italy likes us, with the expection of Pope naturally.

1522

Bad news come from Germany- a small state called Wurtenberg, the same where Martin "Hammer-man" Luther nailed his diabolic work, has declared a new state religion, something they call protestant. Ahhh, heathens in the centre of Europe and so far away from Spanish inquisition.

In january, i send another party of colonists to Manhattan. This time they are better-equipped and have enough supplies. I hope that they are successful. Shamefully, preparations have leave our treasury practically empty.

War between Mameluks and Turkey goes on as usual. There are no clear winners and clear losers. In April, poor Kouban once again changes owner, this time to Mameluks. In may, Turkey once again captures Syria. Yawn. But then, in May, Mameluks suddenly make peace with Turkey, giving Lebannon to Turkey. For the first time, some land was gained in Mameluk wars (Venice doesn't count).

In july, Russia declares war on Sibir.

In 21th October, our colonists, all live and well, arrive in Manhattan and start a new settlement there. They name it New Sicily. Natives are reported to be a bit suspicious, but still friendly.

Same day, news of Pope's another devious trick reach Europe. Seems like the Pope has divided whole new world between Spain and Portugal. Maybe i shouldn't have let Papal States to continue it's existance. To my luck, scribes of Papal States didnt' probably know about newest discoveries in North America, so they are left out. But our trading post in Barahona is now officially Spanish territory. I will get the pope for that.

In 1st of November, emissary of Milan requested an urgent audience with Charles. It seems like the city council has decided to name Charles new duke of Milan. I can't belive my luck. And their change of mind- they were fighting vassalization, but suddenly decided to lose independence and become a province of Sicily. It was a bit later when i heard that France was planning a war against Milan, and they thought it would be safer to be part of our empire. Yes, these rumours might be true, as French ambassador treated be very coldly in the following weeks.

Milan is a rich province, city of Milan having over 116 000 people. Province has both tax collector and chief judge, and brings total 22 ducats per year as census taxes. City is protected by small fortress and also we gained Milan's army: 5000 infantry, 5000 cavalry.

While browsing thorugh papers, i noticed that alliance between Modena and Knights is about to end in about three years, in 1526. I decided to send one very freidly letter to Modena each year, to make sure they will join our alliance when the old one ends.

1523

Finally, someone in Pommerania has came to he's senses: a white peace is signed between them and Algiers. Guess they just gave up hope of Pommeranian North-Africa.

In February, i exhance maps with English. I gain information about some new sea zones and a few islands in the Carribean. Next day, another exhancge is made, this time with France. Also some new sea zones, and a province named Chesapeak in North-America. I send trading expedition there.

In may, we renew our royal marriage with Modena.

In 25th june, Turkey takes Naples back from the rebels.

After one year of fighting, Russians capture capital of Sibir. Peace is made and Russians gain 43 ducats.

In october, our trades arrive in Chesapeake and estabish contacts with local indians. They are once again successful.

In november, another royal marriage is arranged, this time with Portugal

1524

In january, i send another party of colonist to Manhattan, once again depleating our trasury to make neccessary preparations.

In may, Napoli rebels agains Turkish forces once again. Leader of rebellion, a local peasant, sends me a note, asking for support. I don't even bother to answer. First, i'm not ready to fight Turkey, and second, no matter what, i shall not support rebels. They might get some strange ideas if some great power openy supports them.

In 4h of june, Bavaria declares a war on Wurtenberg, first (and hopefully last) protestant country in Europe. Wurtenberg stands alone, while Palatinat, Austria, Spain and Baden come to help Bavaria. I have no dounbts about the outcome of this war and i hope this will end this protestant craze.

In 28th of June, forces of Protugal gained Morbihan from Brittany. One day later, a peace is signed, with Portugal new proud owned or Morbihan. Brittany is down to one province, Bretagne, and it's impossible for France to diploannex them- no more common border.

In july, our alliance with Genoa and Tuscany ends. New alliance is signed the next day.

In august, Charles named me a regent of Sicily. This is as high as a man can go. At the end of August, i recive another good news: our colonists in Manhattan were once again successful. Now over 200 sicilians live on the other side of the ocean.

In the end of November, Wurtenberg falls to Austrian troops, who settle with 165 ducats. Same time, white peace with Palatinat is made. Bavarian army starts another siege.

1525

A quiet year. Bad news in the beginning: another 2 small German countries declare themselves protestant: Hannover and Prussia. Also, white 36-month peace is made between Poland-Lihtiania, Brittany, Scotland and Hanse.
In august, Russia attempts to annex Pskov, but the local Partiacrh declines, and to make thins even worse, cancelles Pskov's vassalization as well.

1526

In the beginning of the year, i find out that our dear neighbours from Savoy know a lot of the new world. I prepare exhange of maps, and we gain about 40 news maps from different parts of the world. It seems that Savoians have gained maps (or explored, i don't know) a lot of territories around Southern America. We don't get much of land maps, but we do know sea lanes now.

Same day, i exhancge these newly gained maps with France. In return, i get new maps of North-America, mostly of the territory called "Canada" for some strange reason. 2 trading posts are set up in Uncava and Torngat.

In May, i discover that Modena has some maps as well. I arrange the exchange and to my great suprise, they now some inland provinces in central America. Wonder how did they get their hands on these?

In 2nd July, Modena enters our alliance with Tuscany and Genoa. Savoy is still part of French alliance, and Venice is helping out Mameluks. I hope to get them sooner or later as well.

In September, Knights enter alliance with Russia, Pskov and Denmark. Strange, defencers of the Holy Land in same bed with orthodox heathens and potentially protestant country. Oh, well, we live in strange times.

In october, our traders arrive in their destination. One excpedition sent to Ungava, is successful, while another one, destined to Torngat, fails. We send another one

In 23th of November, Bavaria finally captures Wurtenberg, and 2 days later Wurtenberg is nothing but a province of Bavaria anymore.

1527

Another quiet year, nothing much happens in Europe. Only later this year, news start coming in. First, our traders fail again.

Second, Russia declares war on Teutonic order in 2nd November. Sweden, not looking for a fight with Russia, dishonours, while England joins Teutons. All Russian alliance joins as well.

Far more important news: in 22th November, Turkey once again declares war on Mameluks. It's a start of the Fifth Mameluk war. Some things are different though: Persia, who has so far been a trustworthy ally of Mameluks, suddenly dishonours. So does Moldovia on Turkish side, but who cares about them?

1528

First news this year: Helvetia joins these heather states, as they declare themselves Protestant. And right next to our border...

Looks like i'm doing a great job. Good goverment policies: 400 ducats invested in both trade and infrastructure. Also, we get trade level 4.

In 9th of January, the secret of Persia's behaviour is revealed, as they join an alliance with Turkey. Thouse scum. I would have wished Venetians would have dishonoured instead.

In february, we also get level 4 infrastructure.

In april, Turkey once again pulls his troops out of Naples. Some militarists propose immidiate attack, but i want to wait and see how the war goes. Turkey has at least won diplomatically, with gaining support from Persia.

And i was right. In 9th of March, Turkey conquers Syria, and heads for Aleppo- fallns on 5th of April.

Also, in 15th April, Russia conqueres Dorpat from the Teutonic Order. Wonder if it is their end?

In may, our traders have failed once again. I'm tired of this and order new ones to be sent to Saguenay instead. Fur is a fur, what's the difference?

In 20th June, Turkey concquers Judea. After that Turkish troops move to Samaria and start the siege there, but abandon it soon and move forward to Egypt.

Meanwhile, Russia takes Riga from Teutons in 9th August, one day later peace is signed, Russia gaining Kurland and 152 ducats.

In 1st of October, a white peace is signed between Poland-Lithuania, Scotland and Spain.

In 10th November, Turkish armies capture Egypt. Their generals order another march through Sinai desert, probably to get Samaria this time. But in 23th of December, Mameluks give up, and Turkey gains Aleppo and Syria, not to mention 129 ducats.

1529

First bigger nation has joined Protesnant movement: Sweden. Also, Thuringen and Hessen convert. The plague get's even worse.

To my joy, Sweden has dishonoured their alliance with England, and English, as good catholics should do, declare war on Sweden in 7th February.

Our traders fail in Saguenay as well.

In may, an emissary from Oman, a small nation in Arabic peninsula, has agreed to exchange maps with us. This way we get information about areas around Arabic peninsula and a bit of Africa. To my great suprise, we found another nation there. They call themselves Ethiopians, and they are christians. More like orthodox Christians, but to find followers of the true faith so far from civilized world is a good news.

I order another trading expedition to be sent to Mombasa, in Africa. This province is knows for it's spice and we could get a good price of it in Europe. They fail again.

1530

Hansa turned protestant this year. Oh, well, i give up. No point in argueing with them, especially when they feel the same way about pope as i do. Still, i grant no religious freedom to them.

Sweden's chances of survival decreace when Russia also declares war on them, in 28th January. Sweden is about to lose a province or two.

Good news from home: in 20th April, i have come to agreement with Alessandro di Medici, ruler of Tuscany. He will give all Tuscany's lands to Sicily's control, while i grant him position of Sicily's viceroy in North-Africa. This way, Sicily gains two provinces: Florece, with city of Florence (population about 62000), producing 15 ducats in census taxes and more important: city with Fine Arts Academy. And Luca, with Pisa as main city (about 38 000 citizens), 11 in census taxes.

Genoa seems to be a bit concered, but in may, i give gift of 100 ducats to Genoa, rising our relation to 200 again.

In august, i offer Genoa a part in Sicily, but they decline. They seem to be offended of me even making that decision, and our relations drop to +150

In October, rumours of vast riches in the New World have made population of Sicily even more inrested in colonization, and 3 new colonists come to our docks. They will stay there for a while as well, for i'm too busy with Italian politics to mess with colonization right now.

In november, Sweden gets Ingermaland from Denmark.

In december, Spain declares war on Aztec empire. I don't know where this empire is located, but rumours of it's vast riches have reached even my ears. Hope the Spanish are not successful, or they might grow too strong.

1531

For the first time, our census taxed have reached over 100- we gained 110 this year. 100 of them goes to Genoa, to improve our relations once again.

And if 12th February, Genoa finally accepts their destiny, and they join growing kindom of Sicily. Genoa (pop 100 000) is a good gain, for they have a CoT of their own, giving me another 60 ducats per year for almoust nothing. Also, 10 in census taxes per year isn't bad as well. Another Genoan province, Corsica, with capitol of Bastia
(pop 7000) is a different matter. Poor province, giving only 5 ducats per year. Oh, well, i guess it's better then nothing. Also, we gain 28 of Genoese warships and 5 transports ladden with 10 000 troops. Genoan admiral Andrea Doria seems to be a bit disappointed, and said some very nasty things about Sicilians. I'm not a cruel man, i didn't order him dead. Instead, i decided that he needs a bit of exercise and now he is happily rowing one of our galleons with the rest of it's jolly crew. My favourite galleon, and i go to joyride with it at least once a week. And i like speed. So Doria will have a lot of muscles very soon. Like a Thigh-Master of 16th century.

In march, Luca rebels. Our garrison there joins the rebellion and i lost control of the city. Also, my troops lost a battle against the rebels. I decided it's time to increace their upkeep once again, for these rebellions are getting concerning.

Our relations with Modena had steadily increaced to 140, but due to recent annexations they have dropped to 50 again. I guess i have to spend some of my yearly incomes to make them happy again.

In june, our forces beat the rebels, and start sieging Pisa. Shamefully, i have no cannons left. But rebels, foolish as they are, forgot to take some supplies with them, so they die like flies inside the city. Seeing the success, i order troops to begin regular siege, not assault.

In July, another rebellion breaks loose in Naples. Since there are no Turkish forces there, they happily start sieging the city. Rebel leader once again sends me a letter, asking for support, and once again i choose not to answer. Soon, i recive another one, saying that once they are finished in Naples, i'm next on the menu. Peasants.

In September, more people join Naples's rebellion against Turkey, now totally 41 000 rebels siege the city.

In december, Genoa rebels. With my garrison once again.

In 12 december, Denmark gets Gotland from Sweden, English and Russia's troops were there to help as well.

1532

So-called defender of the faight, England, has turned protestant today. I heard the pope got heart-attack when he heard the news. Good job, English, i'd say. Also, Palatinat is protestant.

In 2nd of January, rebels get Naples from Turkey. Looks like their leader really meant it when he said that we are next on the menu, as rebels troops start maching towards Apulia. We have an army waiting for them, so i'm not worried at all.

In 14th of January, i once again empty our coffers to give 100 ducats to Modena. To my suprise, they are very thrilled about it, as our relations rise to maximum. Also, i noticed that Modena starts building manufactory. Good, i really could use one.

In February, our forces regain Luca and head to Genoa.

In 14th of March, Modena accepts vassalization. Sicily now controls most of the boot.
Also, in march rebels from Naples arrive in Apulia. My army crushes them and we capture the rebel leader. First, i force him to eat his letters. Then he dies... slowly. Maybe that will show them a lesson.

In april, a new type of weapons, smaller guns called pistols are now standard equipment of Sicily's armed troops.

In june, Turkey's alliance take a huge hit, when Nubia declares war on Ethiopia. Probably because no-one know where Ethipia is, only Turkey remians loyal, while all other nations dishonour.
Soon, Crimena joins the alliance of Russia, while Algiers joins alliance with Aden and Oman.

In 30th june, England captures Västergötland from Sweden, and just 2 weeks later Russia gets Bergslagen-.

In december, Turkey once again took Naples back.
