Free Sicily (finished)

First, thanks for ErrantOne for making that scenario.
Sicily, hard, aggressive.

In october 1492, a rebellion started against Spanish supremacy in Sicily. The leader of rebellion was Fernando of Palermo. Ferdinand and Isabella, being occupied with finising the reconquista, did not worry about it and ordered their vassal, Naples, to deal with us. Naples was not successful, and in July 1st, 1494, city of Messina fell. There we crowned Fernando of Palermo as our king, named Ferdinand II. Me, your loyal servant, was named cheif advisor to our beloved king. Still, Naples is determined to corrent his mistake and gain favour of Spanish crown once again...

Shamefully, Ferdinand was exellent as military leader, but below average as king. Diplomacy, economy, tax collection... in the matter of fact everything else but hunting, waging war and womenizing, is permanent terra incognita to our Ferdinand. So we made an agreement: all these boring goverment businesses are left for me to deal with, while Ferdinand stays with the army.

Sicily is actually two provinces: Sicily and Messina. Sicily is our capital. We have a small CoT there, dealing with 4 provinces. It's annual value is just 40, and without Tripolitania- province exporting ivory- it would be even less. Still, we have a monopoly there and it helps to have some extra income. Sicily also has a shipyard.

Besides island of Sicily, we also like to think Sardinia as our rightful land. At current, it is in Spanish hands.

Officially Ferdinand II is declared king in July 21th. Same day he announces me as his advisor. Situation is suprisingi stable, after 2 years of revolution and war, people seem to have calmed down (stab +2). We have a 10k army in Sicily, leaded by Ferdinand himself (1/3/3). Since we are at war with Naples, dealing with it would be our first problem.

Ferdinand heads for Messina, and i order reinforcements of 3000 men to be built there. Army of Ferdinand is mostly peasants, with 500 knights and 7 cannons. After Ferdinand reaches Messina, he decides to stay there for a while, training new troops.

In August 24, Naples is again accepted to military alliance with Spain (England, Milan). This is a great concern to be, because Sicily is alone and has no chance to fight if Spanish decide to attack us with full strenght. Luckily, Spain is still finishing Granada, though the city is under siege alrady.

During September, Spanish launch multiple assaults on Granada, and on sept 17, Granada falls. About a month later, on 9th oct, Granada officially surrenders to Spain and announces Spain as their master. Same day, Ferdinand starts moving his troops to Apulia.

November 13. Today, a small note caught my attention: emissary of king James IV announced that Scotland is now at alliance with France, Brittany, Savoy, Poland-Lithuania and Papal States. Next day, i went to French embassy and proposed royal marriage between niece of Ferdinand and cousin of king Charles. French ambassador was pleasantly suprides, because he was planning the same proposal. We signed a treaty and after a month, our bride started her journey to France. A bit embarrasing journey, because we had no fleet to escort her and we had to ask Venice to lend us a couple of ships. Luckily they agreed.

In november 23, Ferdinand reach Apulia. Small skirmishes with forces of Naples started, and in 3 december two armies finally met in field. We started our attack with cannon-fire, hoping to scare troops of Naples. Then Ferdinand, leading our knights, started our assault, infantry following closeby. Ferdinand broke through Naple's centre and soon enemy begun to scatter. Losing only few hundred men, we managed to kill or seriously wound about 2000 enemies, another 2000 seems to have deserted.
At december 7, we begun our siege. Preparations for assault lasted for about a month, and in 9th january, 1495, forces of Sicily begun to storm the fortress. We had about 9000 infantry, supported by 6 cannons. Garrison was 10 000 men. Still, we won. Looks like cannons did help a little, and also bravery of our troops. Ferdinand sent a message for me, telling about victory and claiming that he lost only 2000 men and 3 cannons. Also, he asked for reinforcements.
I didn't want to tell Ferdinand, but it was a Phyrric victory. When we collect our yearly census taxes, it is about enough to build 1000 infantry, so it would take 2 years to recover losses. Not to mention the cannons. Instead, i told Ferdinand that we are afraid of Spanish intervention and we like to keep as many soldiers in Sicily as possible. Ferdinand saw wisdom in my words, and decided that he still can take Naples with his current troops. In 10th february, our army started to move to Naples.

In the meanwhile, i have been busy with other matters. Since our royal marriage with France, i have spent a lot of time with French ambassador. As a result, in 1st February, Sicily officially joins the alliance with France, Savoy, Papal States, Brittany, Scotland and Poland-Lithuania. I feel a bit more secure about us now- Spain will probably think twice before attacking us. Still, relations with our allies could be better... at least France joins us, but Savoy doesn't seem to like us much. I plan to chance that sometimes in the future, but now the truth is that Sicily can't afford much diplomacy.

Ferdinand arrives to Naples in 1st of March. Forces of Naples try to avoid the battle, but in 19th of March, our troops finally meet, right next to gates of Naples. This time we have superiority: 7 652 infantry, 300 knights and 3 cannons versus 4470 infantry and 494 knights. Again, Ferdinand assaulted the Naple's centre, broke thorugh and infantry finished the job. We lost another 1000 troops. Our soldiers, drunk about victory, started storming the city. Garrison of Naples was actually smaller, only 5000 troops, and fortress was older. Besides, garrison had a chance to see our victory, and that probably wasn't good for their morale. We took the city the same day, but a small garrison of 500 troops in the inner fortress managed to withstand our armies for another 10 days. Finally, in 30th March, the Naples was under our control. After counting our losses, we were suprised to find out that we lost only 90 men.

1st of April, 1495, the lands of Naples were added to our kingdom. Former king of Naples, Best part was naturally Naples itself, a city with 120 000 residents and tax value of 12. Spain officially protested our annexation, reminding us that Naples was their vassal. Also, ambassador of Spain said that Spanish will not forget this, and Isabella and Ferdinand are furious. I thank God that i had entered an alliance as strong as French, so the Spain probably doesn't dare to attack us right away. Suprisingly, Modena took annexation of Naples also very badly. Maybe the fact that former monarch of Naples asked shelter of Modena has something to do with it... The rest of the catholic world seems to be more vary of us, but generally we are still liked all over Europe.

On 1st of May, Turkey starts their crusade against Shiite country Mameluks. I don't care much, though i'm afraid Turks will get too strong and will become a real threat to us as well.

On 6th of May, ambassador of France askes for audience. Naturally i accept. He informes me that France as declared war on dutchy of Lorraine and would ask for our help. Without hesitation, i tell him that we will join. But i also have to explain him that we have no fleet and therefore we cannot transport any troops to help them. He seemed a bit dissapointed, but i had a plan. I asked him to wait for a moment and went to see Ferdinand. I explained him the situation and told him of my plan. Ferdinand was thirilled, because after one month of peace life was already getting too boring for him. And French ambassador also seemed to like my plan: to send Ferdinand and small escort of knights as advisors and watchers to support the French campaign. After a few days, Ferdinand enters another ship lended from Venice and sets sail for France.

On 8th of June, Mameluks and Turks fight a major battle in Aleppo (40k vs 20k). Mameluks gain total victory- every single Turk is slaughtered.

In the meanwhile, France starts it's siege of Lorraine, with Ferdinand as one of the leaders (he is in charge of the right wing of French army). Also, troops of Savoy and Brittany are approaching. Army of Lorraine, feeling that they cannot possibly win, have fleed and are currently looting province of Champagne. On 3Oth of June, Lorraine falls to French hands. Without further ado, French troops are sent to Champagne.

War between Turkey and Mameluks isn't going well for Turkey. They lose another battle in Aleppo in 19th of July, and once again Mameluks hunt down and kill every single Turk. The next day, peace is signed between Turkey and Mameluks, with Turkey paying 77 ducats.

French army arrives in Champagne in the middle of July. At first, they hunt down looting bands that burn villages and kill citizens, but in 23 July starts a battle between French and Lorraine's main armies. Ferdinand shows again his supreme leadership, and in co-operation with able French commanders, Lorraine's army is annihilated. After a week, in 28 july, Lorraine is joined to French kingdom.

At the beginning of August, a small group of citizens come to my audience, asking for permission to leave Sicily and establish a tnew colony for the greater glory of our nations. Shamefully, i have no idea where to send them, because our knowledge of the world map is very limited. They agree to wait.

I have planned a royal marriage with Poland for a while now. Poland is another membmer of our alliance, and also one of the strongest countries in Europe, so closer relations would be extactly the thing we need. With Polish ambassador, we have made arrangements for month. Ferdinand's cousin, Rudolfo, is to marry daughter of Mikolaj Radziwill, Maria. Also we have agreed that young couple will live in Lithuania, where Maria has quite large lands. I was glad to get rid of Rudolfo, because he is a troublemaker, always looking for a fight. But... i don't know who, but someone showed Rudolfo a map of Europe. After discovering where Lithuania really is, and hearing stories of endless winters, he just refused to leave. Several month of work all for nothing, and Polish ambassador seemed very upset about cancelling the wedding. I'll have to work overtime just to get the Poles back friendly again. Rudolfo was found next morning by a couple of fisherman, lying dead on a beach, and a stiletto in his heart. As God is my witness, i didn't order this murder. But the Polish ambassador seemed a bit happier... Still, i don't dare to offer another marriage to them anytime soon.

Rest of the year was a quiet one, only news was that Palatinat joined an alliance with Spain, England and Milan.

At the beginning of 1496, we recived 20 ducats for census taxes. I spent 16 of them next day, sending 2 merchants to Venice. Also, i arrenged royal marriage with Savoy, hoping that it will help relations between our nations (still -30). To my suprise, everything went smoothly... maybe Rudolfo's death was a good thing after all.

In February, Helvetia joins Spanish alliance. Same month, our merchants open their businesses in Venice. Shamefully, one of them gets involved in a bar fight and is stabbed to death. 8 ducats lost. Still, another one brings us 10 ducats per year.

In may, we form a royal marriage with Austria.

On 10th of May, king of Baden has probably gone crazy: he declares war on Palatinat. Baden has no allies and gets the whole Spanish alliance as a small bonus. With only 10 000 troops, while Helvetia has over 20 000 and Palatinat over 15 000, he has no hope.
As i predicted, Helvetia's troops meet Baden in battle, and in 17th June, gain total victory. Helvetia starts the siege and in 20th june, Palatinat joins them. They storm the fortress after 3 days and within a month, Helvetia has total control of Baden. Still, Helvetians show some mercy and instead of annexing Baden, they settle with their treasury (81 ducats). Forces of Palatinat start another siege.

Since our treasury is always empty, there is't much we can do... in august, we arrange another royal marriage, this time with Tuscany. In December, Venice also accepts our proposal for RM.

Meanwhile, in september, Cologne also joins Spanish alliance. That gets me a bit concerned, since Spain is growing a bit too strong...

1497.
In the beginning of the year, i send another merchant to Venice. Shamefully, i never hear from him again. I don't even know wheater he was killed and robbed or just took the money and run. 1/3 of your treasury used for nothing...

Our relations with Modena have raised a bit, and i thought it would be perfect time to arrange royal marriage with them. Well, it would improve relations and also make former king of Naples, still living in Modena, angry. Suprisingly, this arrangement was also successful and we had no problems. In April, my 19-years old niece Lucrecia was married to a 56-years old count Frederico of Something. Everyone expected Lucrecia to become a widow quickly, but to our suprise old goat (err, count), lived for another 20 years. And it was a happy marriage, with 6 sons and 4 daugthers to prove it.

On 22 of April, the whole world was shocked. Russia declared vassalization of Kazan null and void and also declared war on them. Imagine that... they have sworn to protect Kazan, but instead they try to take it by force... where will the world go this way? Russia's stability hits the bottom (-3).

On 1st of May, we have our first rebellion. 7000 unhappy peasants in Apulia decide that Sicily is no ruler for them. Ferdinand, who's army is in Naples, send orders to wait for his arrival and prepare to march. He steps on a ship and within a few days lands in Naples, where he takes once again command of the army. Our army arrives in Apulia on 17th june, and starts fighting small rebel bands. After 8 days, rebellion is suppressed and order restored. Still, rebels did much damage to the province, looting the houses of our supporters. We captured organizers of rebellion and put their heads on a pike, for a warning.

War is not going well for Russia. Kazan's troops won a battle against Russia's allies in Ryazan, and started sieging the city. Russians send a relief force, but they loose the battle as well. Instead of further helping their allies, Russians concentrate on siegeing Kazan instead. In September, about 100 000 Russains and Pskovians siege the city. Naturally, the province coulnd't possible feed such a large army, and Russia's forces slowly die of diseases and hunger. About 10 000 troops die every month... and then comes the winter. Despite of reinforcements arriving all the time, only 61 000 troops live to see the new year.

In 16th of November, we form another royal marriage- this time with Milan. Now we have royal marriages with all ruling families of Italy, with the exeption of Pope (celibacy) and Genoa (vassal of Milan)

1498.

After reciving this year's taxes, i decided that something must be done to create extra income. Finally, i decided to appoint a tax collector in Naples. To my suprise, it would take a whole year before the collector will begin working, but it has to be done. We need the money.

On 5th of January, war between Baden and Palatinat is finally over, with Baden paying 43 ducats for peace. Poor bastards, they got of easy.

Today i have made an intresting discovey: our CoT is gaining popularity. I saw a merchant from Portugal and another one from Georgia. Good. We probaly collect more money from trade tarriffs then from trade itself. After a few days, merchant from Georiga asked for audience. I was suprised, but i accepted. He had a letter from king of Georgia, asking for a royal marriage between our nations. Naturally i was suprised, but decided to accept.

Pimping seems to be a proper job for me, for in may, i arranged another royal marriage, this time with Hungary. If i keep up the pace, i will run out of proper candidates with no time...

After about a year of sieging, Ryazan falls to Kazan's troops. As expected, Ryazan makes a seperate peace with Kazan, paying 75. Russian troops, cut down to 34 000 men, still continue siege. Kazan's troops try to fight them, but are defeated. About 4000 surviving troops retreat to Vladimir and lay siege of the province.

In august, we heard of Mameluks making alliance with Persia and Hedjaz. We don't know where the two latest countries are, but we suspect they are somewhere near Turkish border... this seems to be defencive alliance against Turkey and if the rumours are true, Persia is a strong country.

In November, we form another RM- this time with Portugal. In december, it's time for England to recive a royal princess of Sicily. Our nation is already gaining a reputation of Europe's supplier of princes and princesses.

1499

Update on Russia's war: 19 000 soldiers are sieging Kazan, Kazan's 4000 soldiers have given up the siege and are happy just to loot poor peasants of Vladimir.

When i visited our CoT today, i noticed another foreign merchant there. This time an Englisman decided to open his store here. Good.

Beginning of the year is quiet, and i take a small vacation. Ferdinand is getting restless... he feels a bit bored.

I decide to go to Nice for a nice spring break. To my great suprise, advisors and prime ministers of all other members of our alliance are there as well. What a coincidence. Also, emissarys from Spain, Cologne, Palatinat, Helvetia and Milan just happen to drop by. After all, Nice is beautiful this time of year.
On April 4th, French ambassador comes to my office and informes me that France has declared war on England. He also reminds me that France wants us to help them. Naturally we join, on same therms as the previous war. Ferdinand and his escort is already onboard a ship and in about halfway to France. Everyone else in our alliance joins as well, but for soem strange reason, every country decides to leave England by itself. Spain, Cologne, Palatinat, Helvetia and Milan dishounour the alliance and England is all alone.

Later this month i send brother of Rudolfo to Denmark as our two countries are joined in royal marriage. To do me a personal favour, Danish king has granted your couple a lot of land in Narvik. Hope they will be happy there.

Battles with England start this May. First, Scots try to trap Englis. They make a brilliant plan- to lure English main army into Lothian, where king James IV personally waits with his main army, while a second Scottish army moves to Marches, to trap the English. A perfect plan, but with one small problem: despite of our expectations, Scots are not such good warriors as we expected and James looses the battle, even though he had almoust twice the manpower of English. English start siege of Birmingham, while Scots move their forces to Marches.
In 18th of May, France starts siege of Calais with 40 000 soldiers. After few days of preparation, they lauch a full assault on fortress. Again, the tides of war seem to be against us. In 9th of June, England manages to break the blocade and bring in 5000 fresh troops. French are caught literally on the ladders. Soon, the French break and start running away. Siege of Calais is abandoned and French troops flee to Picardie. English troops follow them and in 29th of June, France suffers another defeat, while English start siege of Picardie.

Meanwhile, news have reached that Pskov has conquered Kazan, and accepts 225 ducats for their trouble. Poor Russians, they have lost over 100 000 troops in this war and still without any result. Now there is 9000 Russian soldiers left, and they start the siege again.

On 1st of August, fresh French troops, backed up by Savoy, and Ferdinand and one of their generals, wipe the English from Picardie. Looks like 2 of their victories left English over-confident and that payd dearly- no Englishman left the battle alive. Allied forces move on to siege Calais once again. On the same day, England allied himself with Teutonic Order and Prussia. Good, next time we go to war, Poland has something to do as well.

We agreed to royal marriage with Navarra this month as well.

In the 1st of September, Ferdinand gave me a rank of Viscount! I'm satisfied.

On 19th of September, Venice decided to declare war on Ragusa. Their only ally, Hungary dishonours the alliance. Next month, another shock comes to whole western world: Venice has joined an alliance with Mameluks, Persia and Hedjaz. All muslims. I actually understand them and would have done the same thing: now Turkey faces a three-front war if he attacks one of them, and that's a good thing.

In december, Spain and Baden enter alliance with Austria, Bohemia and Würtenberg. It seems Spain has found himself another strong alliance, but this time i'm not worried: all these countries are landlocked and can't do much to help the Spanish if a war breaks out between us.

On 20th december, England finally captures Edinburgh and forces Scotland to sign a separate peace treaty. Scots pay English 24 ducats.

1500
In the beginning of Janary, we finally started building our own fleet. A small one: only 3 transports, but it's a start. And i have a cunning plan how to use them. If it works, we get another 3, or maybe even 4 provinces. Including Sardinia. I told about this plan to Ferdinand and well, and he was thrilled. Still, it's top secret now.

Also, we exchange maps with Georgia. They lacked the information about western part of Europe, while i wanted to know a little bit more about Near East. And we have a new set of Persian maps now, including information about their promising CoT.

In 27th of January, Calais finally surrenders. But alas! comandant of the garrison decided that he will give keys of the castle to Savoy instead of France. Ferdinand, who was overseer of cannons for that siege, was furious, as well were the French. Several fights broke loose between Savoians and French. I bet comandant of Brittish garrison had that in mind when he surrendered to Savoy. Bastardo.

Of other wars: Russia is still besieging Kazan, without much of success. Ragusa and Venice have small skirmishes, but no major battles.

On 27th of May, a panic breaks loose in Sicily. 41 English ships were spotted in Straits of Messina. We don't know what ships there are, as our fisherman don't dare to go close enough to find out and our fleet is still being built. Still, English seem to sail forward... we are afraid of Brittish invasion in either Apulia or Naples.

In June, Hungary joins Austria's alliance (the one with Spanish). Still, most of them are harmless to us, but Turkey should watch out know.

On 10th of June, English fleet arrives to Gulf of Taranto. Still, they are making no plans for invastion, and seem to be sailing forward. We are afraid that Naples will be their target and decide to pull our army positioned there back to Sicily. Also i send a letter to Ferdinand, asking him to return home.

On 2th of July, our fleet is finally ready. I toy with the idea of sending them to scout the English fleet, but then remind myself that these 3 ships costed each our yearly income. Naturally i drop the idea.

In 6th of July, Enlgish fleet enters Ionian sea. We are getting desperate, assuming that there may be even 41 000 troops on board that fleet. I try to convince English to accept whit peace, but they laught at my face, thus making me even more worried. I only hope they decide to invade territories of Papal states.

In the mean time, our army marches through Apulia. We tryed to keep it a secret, since we didn't want anyone to know that Naples is virtually defenceless. But encouraged by rumours of coming English invasion force, peasant of Apulia decide to start another rebellion. To their great suprise they are beaten within a day. As usual, we execute their leaders.

In the 1st of August, English fleet makes it to Straits of Otranto. In 18th August they finally make to Adriatic sea. We are afraid of the worst. 9 ships of Papal States bravely engage English, but they lose. English guard Adriatic sea for over a month... then suddenly they turn back. By october they already reach Straits of Otranto and keep on moving.

A meeting with the French ambassador explains this strange behaviour: while English were busy on their Mediterrainian cruise, French lauched an invasion to Kent and besieged Dover. Naturally, English gathered all their forced to defend their homeland. A lucky strike on our part.

In december, last of the English fleet passes Straights of Messina and heads towards England. I hope they will be caught by a storm and reach England too late. Seems like we are finally in position to win this war, and then i can execute my cunning plan.

Don't know if you realized this, but sicily and Naples were once part and parcel of the same kingdom back in the middle ages, which Norman knights carved out of Byzantine holdouts there. This happened almost simultaneously with the conquest of Britan by William I, and the Italian Norman Conquest was considered the far more momentous of the two until comparatively recent times.

The conquest also led to the Crusades indirectly, as people feared that each generation of landless Norman kights would keep continuously conquering their neighbors to build their own kingdoms. The Pope, in order to keep their eyes off Rome, diverted their ambitions toward palestine ("Go make yourself a kingdom over there, you'll go to heaven for it and its richer than Europe anyway). The kings of Sicily and the Crusader-State of Jerusalem were closely related for most of the latters existance. Ironically, of Christian-ruled europe, Sicily was the most tolerant of Jews and Arabs, despite their crusader affiliation. The influx of these groups helped fuel their economy (which was going strong as the shipping mecca of the mediterranean) until France and Spain got caught up in who, precisely, had dynastic rights to the lucrative region. The fighting and chaos drove potential customers to Venice, thereby ruining the prize they fought over in the first place. Stupid big powers, always messing things up.

Just thought that might give you some fodder for any future shenannigans.

Quiet years before storm

That you all for your kind words :)

1501

In 2nd of January, Kazan finally falls to Russia's troops. In the next day, there is no more khanate of Kazan, but a province of growing Russian empire instead.

In 3rd of January, i hear more concering news: Austria formally declared Spanish superiority and kings of Austria have pleaded loyalty to Spain. That is very concerning news, Spain grows too strong this way. And imagine... emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, and vassals of Spain at the same time. Some have no pride.Thank god that Austria is too far away from Spain so they can't try a diplomatic annexation, but still we are worried.

Meanwhile, we exhancge pleasantries with Savoians, and now we like each other a bit more.

In 26th of January, Turkey starts their second Mameluk War. Wallachia, Georgia, Algiers and Hafsid empire join Turkey, while Venice, Persia and Hedjaz gather their troops to help our Persia. Venice is still fighting an unsuccesful war with Ragusa, and i'm afraid they can't be on any real assistance.

In February, French make andother invasion to England. This time French troops land on Marches and start their siege there. But in 14th of February, French lose a battle in Kent and are forced to retreat to Anglia. March 22th, French main troops arrive in Anglia, and though they are exhausted, they still manage to win a battle against small English army stationed there. French troops are low on numbers though and can't initiate siege. Instead, they start looting the surrounding lands and Anglia is soon in ruins.

Turkey decided to concentrate on Venice first, and in co-operation with Ragusa, they start isege of Illyria. Meanwhile, Mameluks siege Sivas and Persian troops are heading towards Georgia. Turkey decided to storm the province and they are victorious. On april, 26th, Illyria is under Turkish command. Meanwhile, Persia has won a battle in Georgia and started to siege the city. Mameluks leave their siege of Sivas and come to help them. On 15th of June, Venice decides that two wars is more then they can take, and pay Raguse 80 ducats for peace. Same month, Turkey starts siege of Cyclades. Though they storm, garrison of Naxos holds strong.

June 24, French win a battle in Marches. In the beginning of July, another French task force lands in England, this time in Kent. Still, there is too little French to start a siege, so once again French do what they seem to know best: loot the province.

Also, in July, Wallachia, a vassal of Turkey, attacks Venice in Istria. They win a battle and soon Triest is sieged by Wallachian forces. In the beginning of August Mameluks capture Georgia. Hafsid empire lays siege on Corfu. Mameluks start siege of Sivas agian and capture the province in November, while Persia concentrates of Trabzon. Turkey is still dealing with Venice, and their main army is on his way to Cyclades. Finally, in 20th November, Turkey makes final assault and Naxos falls. Turks brutally murder every man on the island. Their main army heads to Sivas

In 1st of December, Apulia decides to rebel once again. Ferdinand takes command of the army and crushes them.

In 19th of December, good relations between us and Papal states take a great hit when Pope says some very nasty things about Sicilians and especially Ferdinand. Too nasty words to be mentioned here. Ferdinand is outraged. So am I.

1502
Another quiet year for us. In 13th of January, French conquer Kent. Their forces move to Wessex. In 15th of Janurary, because of certain tension between us and Papal States, we recruit another 3000 troops in Naples. Pope starts also recuriting, and soon he has an army twice as big as our in Rome.

On 6th of February, we replied to Pope Alexander VI, claiming he was a corrupt and unspirited person, and definetly not a right person to be a leader of all Catholics. Only response we got was even bigger army in Rome, lead by young Cardinal Julius. Another one, who instead of praying, is having more fun waring.

French army arrives in Wessex in 23th of February. After winning the battle against English, they start siege of Portsmouth. Soon, forces of Savoy, stationed in Anglia, join the battle. Another French army, lead by Pierre Bayard, is still trying to capture Marches. English decide to avoid direct battle and start siege of Kent instead.

In July, we Ryazan accepts royal marriage with us. I find these distant countries very useful places to send out our troublemakers. So in November we send another poor soul to north, this time to improve our relations with Teutonic Order.

In August, French finally capture Marches. England seems to be in real trouble...

In September, another revolt starts in Apulia. Ferdinand, stationed in Naples, goes there, sees and wins. After that, i decide that Ferdinand should remain in Apulia for a while. He complains, because he thinks Naples is much fun, but finally sees the light.

War between Turkey and Mameluks seems to be slower right now. There are small naval battles, small skirmishes between small armies, but no major breakthrough until Turkey wins Sivas back in September. It is still uncertain who will win this war, as both sides seem to be equal. I myself like the current situation in Near East. No power is too strong, and they balance each other. Besides, they are busy fighting between themselves and therefore Europe can breathe a little more easily.

1503.

We start recruiting another 2000 soldiers in Naples. Our large army is already 15 000 troops. Sometimes i get depresses thinking that Russians can freely lose 100 000 troops just to get one city, while we have to save a lot of money just to get another couple of thousand troops fighting for us.

In 19th of January, Wessex falls to French troops. English siege Kent, and are also very near of succeeding. But it looks like poor Henry is afraid of further conflict with France, and in 1st of February, the peace is signed. French get Wessex and 23 ducats is evenly divided amongst our alliance. To point out how poor our country is, let me just say i was happy to recive even this little sum.

After giving it a lot of thought, I decided to take a loan. Intrest rates are a killer naturally, and i have no idea from where to get 200 ducats i'm supposed to pay back. But it's worth a chance. In 14th of February, we finally come to agreement with bankers of Venice and 200 ducats are added to our treasury. We use them to recruit additional armies: 8000 infantry in Naples, 7000 infantry and 10 cannons in Sicily and 1000 infantry in Messina. Ferdinand moves his army to Naples once again. Also, every new unit is given marching orders to Naples.

Army of Rome, under command of Julius II, starts marching to north. Finally it takes position in the border of Emilia. Was it the fear of Milan or Venice that made pope send his army so far away from his capital? I can't tell for sure, but situation couldn't be better.

Meanwhile, Turkey and Mameluks finally make peace. Turkey pays 41 ducats and the balance of the region reminds unchanged. Looks like Turkey isn't as strong as we feared it to be, or was it superior diplomacy of Mameluks, who have gathered such a wise alliance. Never mind, what is important is that Turkey is kept at bay, and no nations has gained superiority in this region so far.

In June, we arrange another royal marriage, this time with Brandeburg. Seems like almoust all royal houses have some Sicilian blood in them already. I take a small vacation again, and again i suddenly meet other members of our alliance in Nice. Well, after all it is the place where the nobility goes to vacation, so why wonder. I also spotted Hungarian and Bohemian prime ministers, and even duke of Baden and count of Wurtenberg.

In July, Sweden joins military alliance with Teutons, England and Prussia. I'm suprised of these news, because when i last checked, Sweden was still vassal of Denmark. Looks like they have gotten rid of the vassalisation. We arrange royal marriage with them the same month.

Meanwhile, our new troops gather in Naples, and by the end of September, we have 31 000 infantry, supported by 11 cannons. Naturally Ferdinand commands the army.

Yup, i did a quick research of history of Sicily before starting to write this one. But i decided to write a "clean page"- exept our beloathed enemies Spanish, i will have no other likings-dislikings. Well, exept the fact that i tolerate muslims as well.

Nice AAR!
For Kingdom of Two Sicilies (another name of united Sicily and Naples)! Try to do Medditteranian Empire! If you are the only Major nation, annex Venice (just vassalize them)!

Interesting stuff... you could try building an Island empire in the venetian model by grabbing areas like cyprus, the cyclades, sardinia etc... I was thinking about that myself, but I'm STILL waiting to get the IGC, so I'll have to rely on the vicarious thrills of these minor AARs for a while longer :)

A cunning plan

On september 27, in the year of our lord 1503, Sicily declares war on Spain. Of Spanish alliance, only Austria remains loyal. Hungary, Bohemia, Wurtenberg and Baden dishonur. Spain would be all alone, if Austria wasn't emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Of our alliance, Papal States decides not to get involved.
On september 28, we are at war with Papas States as well. Our ambassador delivers Sicily's declaration of war to Pius III, who has a heart attack after ambassaodrs of France, Scotland, Savoy and Brittany also declare war on them. The same day, our army stationed in Naples, just a few miles from Rome's border, start moving towards Rome. Julius, in command of Papal army, is positioned in Emilia, but instead of marching to relive Rome, he heads for Naples. I guess Pope hopes to come out of this war victorious.

On october 18, our army reaches Rome and besieges the city. Ferdinand, impatient as he is, decides to storm the fortress in first possible chance.

At the same time, France has been busy as well and has captured France-Comte from Spanish hands. To our grief, Austrians are taking our war seriolusly and 20 000 troops are currently marching through Helvetia to help Spanish in France.

Rome falls on 5th november. We lost about 3000 soldiers. One of our soldiers accidentaly shot the pope when Pius was trying to escape. Julius II was named as temporary Pope, but instead coming to help Rome, he continued his march to Naples. Currenly, his army was marching through Romania and in 10th November, first units of Papal States were sighted around Naples. In the following day, Ferdinand gave our army marching orders, with Romagnia as our destination. We were hoping to cut Julius's supply lines and force him to abandon siege of Naples.

In 26th November, French started their siege of Alsace, a province belonging to Austria.

Ferdinand reached Romagna on 1st december and since there was no opposition, the siege of Ancona started immideately. Again, Ferdinand gave orders to start storming.
Julis was a good general, a bit too good for my liking. In about a month after seiege begun, Naples fell. Pope's soldiers didn't even come close to the fort, only 30 cannons shredded walls of Naples, until the city was defenceless. Of course, we had no money to upgrade our fortresses and the one in Naples was getting really old, but still, in a month? The garrison of Naples surrendered on 11th december. I was starting to have doubts about success of our campaign.

Still, only after a week, on 18th december, the bravery of our soldiers made the same result as cannons of Julius: Ancona fell and Romagna was under our control. Only 2000 soldiers lost. Realizing that speed is our key to success, Ferdinand ordered our troops to march to Emilia the same evening. Still tired of assault, many having wounds, our man followed his orders without complaining.

Other news were not so good. On 22th december, France lost a battle to Austria in Alsace and was forced to abandon siege. And in 28th december, people of Naples reported Julius's army heading towards Rome.

1504

Our army reaches Emilia in 8th January. As usual, we start our assault immideatly. But the fortress of Bologna is stronger, better garrisoned and better armed then the previous ones. Bodies of our soldiers decorate the walls of the city, but with no result. In the end of January, Ferdinand realized that it's pointless to keep trying and orders full siege. But what can one done with 9 cannons that are left against one of the most modern fortresses in the world?
In 12th january, Julius seems to have changed his mind and heads for Apulia. This gives us the break we need and seems that we still have hope. After 8 days, Julius seems to have changed his mind again, and heads for Romagna this time.

On 2nd february, Papal States enter a new alliance with Teutonic Order, Prussia, Sweden and England. Looks like the Pope is looking for good old Order for some protection, forgetting the fact that the Order is in the other side of the Europe. On 15th february Julius reaches Romagna and once again is the city under siege, and our army in Emilia is cut away from supplies. Julius's way with cannons is already known and 5000 soldiers whom we left behind in Romagna are not the happiest ones. Still, as a good Sicilian must, they stand bravely and do their best to keep Julius in Romagne for a long time.

In 26th march, Ferdinand orders another assault. Tired of waiting, our troops storm the walls, full of enthusiasm and maybe also the fact that i promised that first one who reaches the walls, will be given new land in Emilia. On 2nd April, Bologna falls.

Next day, we dictate our terms to the Pope. We don't want to totally annex Papal States... think how bad diplomatic move it would be. Instead, we leave Rome to Pope, while Emilia and Romagna become parts of our kingdom. Also, Pope cannot have any armies or navies and the current ones must be disbanded.

First part of my plan was extremely succsessul. Still, we are at war with Spain. So far everything has gone as i hoped, and main fighting took place in France, Spain totally ignoring Sicily.

In first of may, to recognize my services to Sicily, i was named Count of Bologna.

To execute next phase of the plan, Ferdinand started his march to Naples, while our fleet of 3 transports was given extactly the same orders.

Meanwhile, France has won a battle against Austria in Alsace and started the siege. Austrian troops pulled back to Lorraine and also started to siege the city.

In 13th may, Ferdinand with 5000 of his elite soldiers and 9 cannons, started boarding the ships. Finally, at 9th june, everyone is aboard and fleet starts sailing towards Gulf of Cagliary. I personally see the departure of the fleet, and remind both Ferdinand and captains that in no circumstances should we enter sea battle with Spanish: our fleet is too expencive to be risked that way and besides, troop transports are not the best fighting ships.

In 1st june, Romagna revolts. We decide to let them have their fun for a while. In the 1st august, Apulia joins them once again.

Our fleet arrives in 29th june. Preparations to land are made and in 4th august, we begin the siege of Sardinia. Fortress of Sardinia is old and undergarrisoned; only 2500 soldiers are assigned there. Ferdinand, certain of victory, orders the assault. Fleet is ordered back to Naples. But we fail- on 12th august it is certain that we cannot possibly win, and pull back.

Genoa, a vassal of Milan, decided on 8th august to cancel it's vassalization. We offer them royal marriage and they accept. Now we have rm-s with every Italian nation (well, not with the pope).

At the end of August, forces of Spain conquer Lorraine. France is sieging Artois.

On 3th september, Holstein gives up it's independance and joins the growing kingdom of Denmark.

I'm positive that Sardinia will fall with the next assault, so i execute phase three of my plan. In Naples, 1000 soldiers lead by colonel Angelecci, board our transports. Fleet is headed to Gulf of Mallorca.

In 15th november, Ferdinand orders another assault. And he fails again! I begin to wonder if he is growing old, or is it just supreme spanish equipment that stops us (us lev 3 in land tech, they 5). Also, Ferdinand seems to be low on manpower and can't make another assault.
To make things even worse, Naples revolts on 1st december. Luckily what's left of our army there manages to beat them, even though they were outnumbered 2:1.

In 28th december, our fleet has reached Gulf of Mallorca and started invasion of Baleares. This was the most cunning part of my plan, because the island is completely defenceless.

1507

Fortress or Romagna shows signs of giving up under rebel pressure. I send army in Naples to finally suppress the rebellion. In 26th january, a battle is fought and rebels are annihilated.

In 25th january, we have full control of Baleares. My plan seems to work flawlessly, despite minor setbacks in Sardinia. Next stop: Gulf of Almeira.

In 18th February, Spain trys to change their luck with invasion to Wessex, but they are repelled.

On 10th march, our fleet arrives in Gulf of Almeira and our army starts invasion of Murcia, another defenceless Spanish province. By 7th april, we have full control over Murcia as well. Fleet is ordered back to Naples with a stop in Sicily.

10 days later France captures Atrois, with a little help from Savoy and Brittany. Their combined armies start moving toward Luxembourg.

It seems all we need is Sardinia to get a favourable peace treaty. In june, as soon as our fleet arrives in Naples, i order another 6000 soldiers to be sent to Sardinia. In august, we make a royal marriage with Saxony.

In 2nd September, big war starts up north. Denmark declares war on Sweden, Russia and Pskov join to support the Danes (Ryazan dishonoures), while Teutons and English fight on Sweden's side (Papal Staes and Prussia dishonour). Seems like the Pope is getting very good at dishonuring... still, they join a new alliance in 20th september- this time he seeks protection from the Knights (and Genoa, Tuscany, Modena).

In 22th September, our forces finally land in Sicily and Ferdinand orders third assault the next day. And again, we fail. Outnumbered 4:1, Spanish seem to fight like hell. I decide to take all my armies from Italy and send them to Sardinia.

In 8th october, Luxemburg falls to Savoy. They did it again! Like in Calais, commander of the fortress decided to surrender to Savoians rather then French. French are furious again, but there is nothing to be done. 3 days later Sweden gains control of Skane.

By 1st november, there are no Sicilian troops in Italy (well, there are the rebels in Apulia, to be exact). What's left of our mighty army, is on board transports and heading to Sardinia. But then, totally unexpected, French land their own expedition force in Sardinia, total 12000 infantry. Ferdinand, thrilled by the news, orders a new assault and in 19th november, flag of Sicily waves on towers of Cagliary. We finally have Sardinia.

Next day, we offer peace to Spanish, asking only Sardinia. And they decline! It is rumoured that Ferdinand and Isabella decided rather to fight until last men then to give any land to Sicily. They are still mad at us for gaining independence, and annexing Napoli didn't make them feel any better.

Things get even worse: Austria captures Bearn from Spain just a few days later.

Ferdinand board ships with 5000 man and 8 cannons. Destination: Naples.

1506

Rebel forces have been sieging Apulia for a long time now, and the fortress is about to fall any day now. When Ferdinand reaches Naples, he heads to Apulia first to put down rebels.

Meanwhile Spanish seem to have gotten new energy and are building new troops all over Spain. Even worse, 20 000 man Austria army heads towards Murcia, where we have 1000 soldiers. It seems like the Spanish have no plans to surrender anytime soon, and we can't reach Estremaduras (another unfortified province) with just 1000 man- too many Spanish forts on the way. So, on 23th april, Ferdinand boards ships in Naples, with 6000 troops and heads towards Murcia.

Meanwhile, Austrian army reaches Murcia and by 23 april, our troops are annihilated. These bastards, they didn't leave a single man alive! I will get them for that... sometime. Luckiliy, Austrians don't plan to stay in Murcia for long, and soon after the massacre, they start moving towards France again.

In first of June, French start siege of Bearn, determined to take that fortress back. But just 2 weeks later, Spain manages to talk France into seperate peace, offering them France-Comte. Now we are in trouble: there is only 3 of us left: Savoy, Brittany and Sicily. 3 small nations against Spain, the strongest nation in Europe! Still, we have to try to make best of our situation.

In 18th july, our fleet arrives in Gulf of Almeira. Ferdinand starts moving towards Murcia, and by 15th August, Murcia is under Sicily's command once again. I send fleet back to Sicily, to resupply, while Ferdinant moves to Estremaduras, taking the shortest path: over Spanish gold-producing province of Toledo. He reaches Toledo in 16th september and gives our troops free will. They can burn, kill and rape whatever they want. At least we have crippled Spanish gold-prodiction for over a year.

In 30th September, we are engaged in our first naval battle ever. Luckily our captains do just as they are told: run like hell. This way we can at least spare our valuable ships.

In 12th october, we also control Estremaduras. Ferdinand is sent back to Murcia. We now have 4 stars against the Spanish, and ask for Sardinia. They still refuse! This is getting a bit absurd, for we have no more power to fight on.

Savoy has been sieging Roussillon for a while now, and in 8th december it falls to their hands. We offer peace to Spanish again, hoping that loss of Roussillon has softened their hearts, but no! Still no.

Spanish troops intercept Ferdinand when he is on his way to Murcia, and in Battle of Toledo, 5000 Spanish infantry totally crush Ferdinand. It was the first time after out war of independence we have met Spanish in open field, and i'm getting a bit panicky already.

1507

War is not going as we hoped, mostly due to stubborness of the Spanish. And on 9th january, Spanish take back Estremaduras. In the next day, i have come to decision: we ask Spanish for peace, demanding 250 ducats. They accept, and even better: they give us 240. Looks like Spanish treasuries are empty now.

Instead of making peace with all of our alliance and thus having to split the money between as, i act as true bastardo and make separate peace with Spain, so we could get at lest all 250 to ourselves. It's not a nice thing to do, but we have to repay our loan next year and we need to recover a bit, and the best way to recover is using money.

250 goes to good cause: we promote tax collectors in Sicily, Messina and Romagna. Rest of the money is spared to repay the loan.

Turns out that my cunning plan wasn't as cunning as i expected, but Sicily still came out victorious. We have gained 2 new provinces and have 6 of them now. Also we have shown all Europe that we are not to be taken lightly, and we can beat Spanish if we want to. 240 ducats also helped a bit.

That's my plan as well. But before i get Venice, i must grow a bit stronger, or they'll just laugh at my face when i offer to vassalize them. My eyes are turned a bit more south right now.

Interesting stuff... you could try building an Island empire in the venetian model by grabbing areas like cyprus, the cyclades, sardinia etc... I was thinking about that myself, but I'm STILL waiting to get the IGC, so I'll have to rely on the vicarious thrills of these minor AARs for a while longer

It's a bit difficult to defend... but i'll try.
Btw, what you you mean STILL waiting for the IGC??? You can download it anytime from Europa Ascendant ... or do you mean just EU? Sorry, i'm just confused here...

Good job - in my game as Portugal Sicily declared independence on their own - after Pope captured Messina from Spanish and rebels decided to finish with both. They even took Apulia, but were deprived from Sicily by English, so I had to take it all :)

I too would have liked the island empire like Venice, but it seems like you need an additional tax base and the easiest way was thru Papal states. Let me guess - the next step is Luca from Tuscany? This is the only province besides Sardinia that you can get without obtaining too much bb points. Unless, of course, you want to go for Mantua? Hm, I am confusing myself. You said your tolerance to Muslims is high. Are you planning an expidition to Africa then?
