The LD has seemd quite content in the days leading up to the election to serve as a minority party outside government. I honestly think we can get better terms for a coalition with the RD.

Also, we are going to have issues with regards to who can fill what positions, as Mr peo noted. Either the President is going to have to reach outside the party for cabinet members, or we're forced into coalition to fill those positions.

Also, as we've been such a fractious nation in the past months, I think it is best that we look at what will provide the most smooth transition to a stable government. That seems to me to be the coalition we've discussed previously.

Obviously, in the end, if the party desires to go to bat in a 6/6 Parliament. Then that's fine. But I am uncomfortable with this option for obvious reasons.

Hmm maybe...
We need 4 people to fill the ministerial chairs.
(ooc: we need more citizens :( )
If we can come to a acceptable compromise i can agree with a coalition with the RD.

Realistically, I think we could count on 2 ministerial posts from our own party out of those active but not nominated for Parliament. The other two are going to have to come from outside.

We could ask the current CRO to continue to serve, unless someone is dying to hold that position. (If someone wants to be CRO, btw, let us know in case we don't form a coalition). If we don't form a coalition, we need to look to the NGOs to fill the other Ministerial positions. That's the math, as I see it.

The RD has confirmed that our former terms for coalition, which were quite reasonable, remain open. That would alleviate much of the Cabinet selection issue, as then we could tap them for 2 chairs.

The legislative compromise would be legislation would be nominated by one party and seconded by the other. The policy compromises were outlined previously and can be reviewed. But the most difficult for us would be civil unions. Whereas they are willing to concede maintaining the DP (with modifications to procedure we have discussed), and abortion being illegal as contraception.

The RD leadership and myself have seemed most able to come to agreement on defense policy, and this would bode well, given the current lack of preparedness in our navy and air force, and the need to shift over time to a volunteer military to maintain efficiency.

Fiscal policy is, by constitution, the purview of the President.

In short, I think the compromise is the best way to proceed, given the current situation. I;d agree that if the LD was more willing to talk, we would naturally be better served by their closer ideology. But they haven't looked remotely interested in any offer I've made. The RD has been consistently cooperative in terms of negotiating a mutually agreeable coalition. It will be difficult I agree. But given the circumstances, I would encourage proceeding along these lines rather than trying to govern in a Parliament with no functioning majority.

[OOC:

Just to avoid any confusion, the President is responsible for fiscal policy in the sense that s/he handles the Finance Department directly, i.e. there is no Minister of Finance.]

I've nominated Mr. Galloglaigh for the post of Speaker, and trust someone else will second the nomination so we can get down to voting. ;)

(OOC: On an unrelated note, wanted to ask, has anyone else a desire to serve as editor of the Voice? If not, I have something of a celebratory post-electoral article I should like to publish)

OOC: Something else just sprang to mind ... Do you guys have any sort of chat program (MSN, AOL IM, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, etc.) available to you? Seems like, in particular for parliamentarians, it might be good to have the opportunity to speak with each other outside of the forums, if only to better formulate policy. Not even sure if those sort of tactics are considered kosher by the GMs, but if they are, it could be an excellent way to keep us all informed and unified in our goals.

Mr Preseident,

I would suggest that if a coalition is acceptable, that you offer METI and MDIA to the RD.
if a coalition is formed then the RD may submit who they would like to have fill those 2 posts to me and we can work it out. :)
that still leaves the other 2 ministerial positions for us to fill from the FR people left. those 2 we can work out now.
volunteers of those remaining active members not in the parliment? :)
