''Francien'' colonies ?

Since it seems evident that there is no universally agreed upon name for a number of cultures, I think the clear solution here is to do away with all culture names and just assign everyone a number. Cultural unions can be simple number ranges.

Since higher numbers are clearly better, [insert favorite culture here] should be the biggest number. Also, it should be prime.

Francien is, if anything, a word invented in the XIXth century. The word commonly used is français, français de Paris or event françois (pronounced frãswɛ). The translation of français in English is... French.

By this logic, the Byzantines should be Romans. Many things in the game don't use contemporary names, but modern ones or (frequently) Anglicized ones rather than native language.

CNs take their names primarily from the name of the country as of a patch or two ago.

Trade companies still don't, and they probably should, so maybe that's what they're refering to.

That's because of the triggers in file common/colonial_regions/00_colonial_regions.txt
If there's a trigger like tag = NED, the pre-formated name will be used.
If there's not, then a partially randomly generated name will make use of your culture name.

And as stated by Wiz (which everyone seems to ignore) that is not the case. They use the country, not the culture name! But please, go ahead and ignore Wiz.

I saw history-focused Frenchmen bring the name up as the ideal name for the culture that includes Paris in CKII. The argument being that "Francais"/"French" refers to everyone in France, including Gascons as well as Parisians, and that "Francien" existed as a term that was generally applicable to the areas of France where what CKII now calls "French" culture used to exist.

Personally, I have no problem with just calling the culture of Paris and surrounds as French, as to me it just signifies that this is the area that is definitive of the prestige culture of France. But Francien is alright, as long as it doesn't bleed over into colony names.

Iberia and Hispania its the same. Iberia comes from Greek, Hispania comes from Phoenicians. There's no confusion, so there's no need to change it.

Not trying to be rude but in my games I see British Mexico, French Brazil, Spanish Peru, etc. The game as of El Dorado, I think, started using the nations denonym rather than culture. I do not use any mods that change colonial nation names. Another thing, in one of my games one of Spain's colonies inherited from a PU with Portugal revolted, then when the colony was beaten by Spain they changed their name and colour to match Spain, but kept Portuguese culture.

Hah, sorry. I actually haven't played a game for long enough to see CNs for a while as I've been at university. I just assumed they were still named by culture because everyone was complaining about it. Forgive my ignorance

I think it would be better to call it "spanish" rather than "hispanic". The two are really the exact same word, but spanish is more "pure" english. Having it named spanish would add immersion because it would show that "spanish" used to refer to the whole peninsula. also, people might start to think about mexicans if it was named hispanic.

It's certainly not something big, but it would be better to change it to spanish if only for the reason that spain, and not iberia, was the name of this regional identity. It refers to the same thing, but people really didn't use iberia as much as they used spain.

This is not entirely true. It's easy to overlook as mostly you get English, Castlillian, Portuguese or less likely Dutch, Breton, Norwegian colonies. In all those cases the demonym is the same as the primary culture. Except obvious things like "Spanish Brazil". There is no spanish culture. Or Hanseatic La Plata or Oldenburgian Colombia instead of both being Westphalian X.
The only exception seems to be France apparently.

What do you mean "This is not entirely true"? What I said is exactly what is in the game's code. Sure, you might not notice some, but that's still how it works.

On another note, Wiz has confirmed that my suggested change has already been implemented, so... yeah.
