So I was playing a game as Spain...steamrolling everyone I needed to in Italy, Britain, North Africa, etc. I easily round up all the dominance objectives I need except for those in France. So I set about reorganizing my army: creating balanced corps sized units that will stand next to each other and support when needed with March to the Sound of Guns: heavy cav and supplies and guards in reserve, artillery and infantry everywhere, skirmishers in the middle and light/med cav on the flanks with the best leaders I can. Lots of fire tech, some move and reinforce. They are standing in the Pyrénées in full supply....and the french come in roughly equal/slightly inferior numbers. Every battle they take about 60 casualties....I take about 10,000 (1/3rd to 1/4th force of a Corps). What is going on? The only explination that comes to mind is France has circa 160% Army Quality and I have about 97%...but I have no idea what this means and how to increase it.

standing in the Pyrénées in full supply...

There is the issue right there. The number of troops do not matter when fought in mountains, only the quality of troops. They, having massively superior troops, will decimate your units no matter what. Try engaging them in the open instead or build your quality to be closer to theirs.

Think of it like in the movie 300, you have a narrow pass to fight in. Even if it is 300 vs 10,000, only 500 or so of the 10k can actually engage you. The inferior 500 vs 300 is no contest.

Higher army quality - more "land" idea picked
Cavalry is good in open terrain, in mountain light troops.
Simple example:
DefenderModifiers_mountain = {
light_infantry_attack = 0.25
light_infantry_defense = 0.5
cavalry_attack = -0.75
}

Look at modifiers to frontage/ battle eff. when battle begin.
