Hello there.

Yes, I'm a newbie to this forum... Registered today. Anyway I've played the game for some time now, but mostly as the Ottoman Empire. (Real cool nation, if you have the EEP :)

Now I've just removed the EEP, and installed patch 1.05, and started a new GC as France. I'm wondering if its possible for France to become elected as HRE-Emperor. I always fail. One time I even tried reloading a saved game from before the monarch of Austria died, saved the game and "cheated" (just for experimental reasons), to get relations with EVERYBODY at +200. Then I loaded the game, and soon afterwards the monarch and Emperor of HRE died, but still I didn't get the title...

Any responds greatly appriciated.

PS: Sorry about the stinkin' language...

OK!

So it is possible??

WOW!! Then Austria must have had an extremely good relations with the electors. I've seen Spain getting the title, several times, when Austia had been doing it's BB wars. But I've never gotten the title my self :(

And thanks for the welcome... I love this game.. Actually I'm addicted to it. Man we got 30 degree temparature here and sun and everything... And I'm sitting in the basement and playing EU2 hour after hous :)

It is difficult to have France be the HRE, since the Austrians get the hapsburg bonus, and Spain has good relations with all the Catholic countries in the HRE.

The best way to win the HRE is to conquer Austria and Spain, as the two major winners will be gone, and you should own enough elector territories to secure a victory.

You will have to wait for a while, get your own relations with elector states up and wait for others to be gobbled up by Austria. Once the Hapsburgs have a bad enogh BB, and there are less folks to pay off, you should be able to get elected. Make sure you have as close to +200 as you can with all states that say "elector" when you roll over them in the religion screen (the HRE should look like a big green blob in your diplomacy screen). And hope that Spain has some bad relations too. It's much easier after the reformation, but you do not have to conquer Spain and Austira to do (though it helps). I've done it as Prussia and Burgundy and failed as Brandenburg (before I myself went Prot.) and Saxony (though I only played to 1556 becasue the whole point was to be HRE - why else stay Catholic so long as a German minor?)

Also - once you have it, make sure those relations stay up because you can just as easily lose it. You will not get as big a bonus as Spain and Austria (not proven). As France, it's extra hard becasue you have to make war so much, and to unify the country means some BB (unless you try it like Navilkyo - if your reading, I know I spelled it wrong and I apologize - Vollan, check the AAR's for his stuff if you have not seen it - great stuff about letting your vassals work for you!).

Cheers.:)

Louis XIV lives for ages though, if you can manage to get him elected. I once had him die early on me and my regency government got elected, but that was in EU1... dunno if monarchs can die early anymore.

Why is that anyway? I know it was this historically. Maybe it was something to do with who owed allegiance to HRE? But then Denmark had land in HRE.

It has to do with the Hapsburg/Valois rivalry. As France was Austria's main rival during most of the Ren./Ref. period, the Hapsburg Emperor's did not want France to have any influence in the HRE lands. Other countries did not present the same threat to Austria (except the Ottoman's, who also do not get to own land inside the HRE) until the rise of Prussia, and by that time the HRE was hardly a functioning entity. That's the quick and easy answer at least.

Just to clarify for any newbies reading, it is not just the Ottomans but any non christian nation that will not have their provences as part of the HRE. So Non Christian and French = No HRE

by christian you mean all christian sects or catholic/protestant/reformed..if Russia conquers part of the HRE does it stay within the HRE? And if France and Ottoman Empire conquered every last state in the HRE and removed it from the map, would they still elect an emperor? Being elected emperor isnt anything great anyhow, i havent noticed any bonuses.

And don't forget that the wee little Prussia (polish duchy) is an HRE elector, even though it lives outside the HRE. After spending 100os of ducats to buy the crown, I lost because I had ommitted Prussia from my campaigning. So I annexed them in a fit of rage.
