Are there countries that are always lucky? I thought it was supposed to be random but every time I start a new game France are lucky(maybe there are others too). They always become way more powerful than any country in the game and while I can still beat them it's a bit boring having the same superpower game after game.

France is lucky in about 90% of all games.

The hilarious thing about France is that they are destined to become a giant blob even if they aren't lucky. Lucky France is really the pure definition of overkill.

Well, you could always save and quit at the beginning of a new game, open up the save file in Notepad and remove "luck=yes" from FRA's entry.

Bah, in my games, even though France seems to become a giant blob, whenever I defeat their first wave of soldier they seem to go bankrupt.

Spain gave me quite a bit more trouble

What are the criteria for lucky nations, anyone know? It does seem to me that often it's the same countries, more or less, that get that lucky tag.

A lucky nation is decided base where the human player is. for example, if you are playing Bihar. Ming, Japan, and/or delhi would have a high chance of being lucky, and France not having a high possibility.

If you do that, make sure you re-assign the luck tag to some other nation (not the player) otherwise, the random engine may reset it to France. For a laugh, I found giving JAP (Japan) the lucky tag makes for some interesting far east late game.

There are other factors just as tax income and population, it seems. I don't know if anyone has figured out for sure what contributes to lucky and in what amounts. All I know is that Provence was lucky one game I played. Sure enough, when France fought England (who didn't get a luck tag), guess who the new controller of Wales was?

Really? Is there a minimum number of lucky nations?

Yes, there is and I think the magic number is 8. Easy way to check "grep -c luck=yes <insert_save_file>"...

Aside from proximity to the human player, countries that start the game strong will tend to get the luck tag. Lithuania is an example that is very frequently lucky when you'd usually prefer it to be Muscovy if you want the game to be at all historical.

First thing I do in any game is reassign the luck tags to new world nations. Makes for a much more enjoyable game.

I always remove the luck tag from France. It really does not need it. Then I assign it to countries that I want to play against in the late game. It makes for an interesting game for me.

Does no one take pity on poor 1-province minors. I re-assign the luck tags to riga, serbia, mantua, utrecht, ragusa, montenegro, and the knights.

That is my one good deed for the year :D

More often than not this just means you have to assign them again after Lithaunia's 100,000 men steps on Riga's lucky 2000.
