No, this is not another thread raging on France and requesting to nerf it.

Instead, please buff Austria, Castille and England! They are just too weak to do anything against France, they're like small regional powers while France is continental power.. They need to be able to drive back France. Even with lucky nations off France blobs all over the place while Austria and Castile cant do anything about that..

Really? I mean, I've only played one 1.8 game so far, but France seems a lot more reasonable in this patch than in 1.7. A Castile/Austria/England alliance has kept it fairly contained, it's 1569 and France has only taken most of its cores and vassalized the Pope. Brittany is still alive! And I haven't even had a thing to do with it, I'm Songhai. This patch seems a lot more balanced in general, to be honest, I quite like it.

Yeah i agree this patch is very good, but i still think they should get abit more umph..

My only complaint about them is that they never implode. I was at war with France with -2 stability and 12 war exhaustion. Nothing happened internally.

They always seem to have the money and manpower to deal with ANYTHING. It's quite frustrating and annoying.

Imo Castille got buffed in this patch.
Let's check the Spanish NI and traditions in 1.7 and now shall we?
1.7 Traditions:

• +10% Morale of armies
• +1 Missionaries

1.7 1st National Idea:

• +1 Colonist*
• +2.5% Discipline

1.8 Traditions:

• +15% Morale of armies
• +1 Missionary

1.8 1st National Idea:

• +5% Discipline

*The colonist from 1.7 patch was push foward to their 3rd NI.

Imo, again, Castille get a stronger early game and is able to unite all of Iberia militarily, afterall the French power spike is when they unlock the 2nd NI "Élan!!!"

In my game Castile and Austria keep France contained, so I think this patch is quite balanced.

I have to agree with the above, in my observe games France actually loses wars to Austria and Castille/Spain alliances instead of being unbeatable. The only thing that messes it up is that the victorious anti-France alliance never goes for a death blow and lets France recover and grow.

I know 1444 France is a beast; but 1618 France was a challenge for me to play as. A lot of balancing armies against Spain and Austria. Having fun though.

From what I hear, Ottomans now struggle with Poland + Austria alliance now that Poland is lucky.

If you buff Austria, it would be a railroad for an early Ottoman demise.

I say buff Ottomans, they tend to involve France in later game anyway.

France indeed was the super power of the time. This is like saying that a game about the US versus whoever in the late 20th century is unfair because the US is too strong.

Besides, France isn't that hard to deal with, Just pick The Papal State and crush them

Just started a games with Provence and i was able to conquer back my core and force france to give me 10% of their income. I got lucky yes, but i was actually easy to do.

England does not need any more buffs - its starting economic strength is insane.

What's needed is a better diplomatic AI that can 'see the bigger picture' rather than focusing on its immediate neighbours. Either that, or Wiz needs to force the AI to stop making such obvious strategic blunders in the first few years of the game. For instance, Castile brings in France to fight against their 'common enemy' Aragon, which is clearly a bad move for Castile in the long run, and Austria rivals England, when England is pretty much the perfect ally for Austria (hardly any potential for conflicting interests, both want to keep France weak, and they complement each other's strengths nicely).

Austria figured out how to handle a super-mega France in my game - ally with them and destructify western Europe. Poor Spain.

That's my observation, too. France isn't weak by any means, but I see it outperform in a few game, underperform in a few games, but still maintain a strong enough presence that it fills its historical role. HAB/HRE is more consistently the outperformer in that part of the world.

Yeah. The first few observer games I ran, it looked like the were comparable to 1.7 (i.e., significantly underperforming, but retaining enough strength to fill their historical role, somewhat. Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be the case. The underperformance is more pronounced and they're becoming a bit of the "sick man", just centuries too early, having never approached their zenith. The good news is that they don't really need to buff them. Just undo some of the nerfs from this and prior patches.

England is still terrible. It still spends the entire game failing to take scotland.

The OTtomans get ganged on by everyone and eventually Lithuania just comes and takes free land.

Here is the situation of my game at 1582 (I am the Ottomans):

France has stomped two major alliances consisting of Castille / Austria and then various mediums and minors twice, it isn't to say it had much help either, it's only allies have been Hungary who I demolished early when France was busy in its first major war against the allaince, and then it only had Naples and Provence as friends, as well as Venice for a little while.

What I don't like is if you look at its army status it has 42 hired mercs, seems a bit OTT, this is the situation after its second major conflict that I have seen anyway:
