I've had two battles which ended with both sides retreating, once when I won against the Englsih. The second time, my army was destroyed but the Burgundians retreated.

When Kaffa defects from the Golden Horde (to Crimea) they remain controlled by rebels, eventually defecting back to the Golden Horde.

When I accidentally hit the "Esc" button, I couldn't get rid of the grey screen that appeared (which caused a speed hit).

This last bug may be related to the previous one, but when I invaded the Ottomans as France, they didn't respond. I landed 12K troops in Morea, 35K troops in Athens didn't move. I captured the province, shipped over to Macedonia, captured it, then marched on Thrace. They had another 45K army was sitting in Smyrna (IIRC). Neither moved to do anything about my pressence until Thrace was about to fall. Then the 35K army laid seige to Macedonia and the 45K army sent small groups of 5K soldiers at me. It might be that this happened because the grey screen had slowed the computer down so that it wasn't able to think about what it needed to do for all countries.

edit: changed Thebes to Thrace, where was my brain?

Armies will retreat from a province if they are too small compared to the fort size (if the fort is in a nation you are at war with).

I see this frequently - a country sends an army, starts a siege, then breaks it off a day later to return to a province of its nation. It builds a few more troops, then marches to siege again, then returns back to build more troops. It seems not to ever get enough to where it feels it can actually siege - I thought you couldn't enter a province unless you had enough to siege, so it shouldn't be the case that it has insufficient force.

Just had this appen to me and Paradox really needs to do something about it. I was in the middle of a war with Austria where is was a toss up on how it was going to end and suddenly Aiutria starts doing this siege abandon siege start siege again. Ruined the war to put it mildly. I've read others having seen this so I'm just bumping this up and maybe someone can give me some feedback on if Paradox is actively trying tocorrect the problem. Thanks and yes its a great game.

Yes I too have seen something like this happen. I was France and was doing the usual Iberian clean-up, when a Castillian army got stuck between to areas that I had conquered. They weren't strong enough to lay seige to the forts in the areas, so the got stuck in an eternal retreat.
Of course it is fair enough that too small armies get routed out of an area where the standing garrison is too strong, but it does get riduculous when they've been marching between the same two areas for over 9 months!

It's not always an insufficient force thing. I watched Tuscany do it to Mantua (Venice) for a few years. They had 15k or so troops, and the fortress was only small. They'd start the siege fine, gun graphic and all. Then they'd leave. And immediately go back. Not even picking up further reinforcements. Not sure what ever happened in that war.

I think Paradox has tried to prevent the AI from sending in an army that is too small to siege and it then just sits there doing nothing. This was a problem in EU I and I applaud Paradox for the attempt to eliminate the problem but it is only half solved. If the AI sees that it can't continue the siege and retreats then the code needs to be changed to prevent it from simply going back and doing exactly the same thing. I've read through the 1.02 patch and it doesn't look like this problem was look at so it looks like we'll have to wait for patch 1.03.:( At least it doesn't seem to constantly happen.
