Not quite the true. I have played a lot of free games that gave me far more time of fun then Rome did - by far.

The thing about Rome is that it feels too empty. As i always said, the player should be able to interact more with the game. And quite frankly no mod will resolve that problem since the game requires extra hardcoded stuff and not in-game events and things like that.

I actually piss about in MS Paint more than I play Rome - not sure what that says, though.

Well free != same priceclass as Rome, now is it ;)

Don't be so negative. I agree with you of the lack of depth being a problem with the game, with my post I was trying to move the discussion a bit higher up so instead of just bashing the game yet again, I told people why we are unhappy. Not because of the lack of depth, but because of the lack of paradox quality depth. We see this game as the latest paradox game, and so expected paradox depth. Yes, I did not write depth but time sink, and this is because its honestly a better decription of the long term enjoyablility of a game since more depth doesn't neccasarily translate to more time spent in the game. Whereass more time spent obviously means more time spent.

Ohh yeah. And I never use MS Paint. I use GIMP  not that I'm good at drawing, but still

My sister has it and she is on the internets :nods:

Actually, I just handed in some work and on it was a diagram that had originally been drawn in hand. After deciding that in order for it to be readable, I had to make a computer version of the diagram. After having tried and failed to get OO Drawing to do what I wanted, I fired up Blender3D. A powerful 3D tool people use to make games and awesome pictures and made the diagram in it. Afterwards I felt it was a bit overkill :p

The saddest thing about EUR is that Paradox missed an opportunity to break into the mass market as millions of gamers bought RTW and could have been attracted to a game that should have offered the same sort of tactical battles with an even better historical/strategic element. Unfortunately EUR did neither: the map is lazily designed rubbish (not a patch on RTW or Spartan), the combat system is diabolical and not even a close approximation of ancient warfare, the minors (especially the barbarians) are pathetic, the AI non-existent and so on. It's a terrible product not only for a Paradox game but in comparison to most other games. The main problem is that Paradox has been designing games that use the same system for about a decade now: EU, Victoria, CK, HOI, EUR and all their variants/expansions are basically modifications of the same game. What was great in EU2, Victoria and HOI2 has become stale, tired, tedious and dull in CK, EU3 and EUR. I know that I'm sort of saying, 'been there, done that/it's not you, it's me', but I feel that it's time for Paradox to put its current 'game' to bed and come up with a brand new game system, EU The New Direction, not EU4 for example.

Lol I come and check this forum every month or so since is stopped playing this game a few months ago, and I feel obliged to say something here too.

I agree with the post that said that is not a bad product, it is just not a good paradox product. Vanilla Rome is a very light version of EU3, so why play it when u can play a similar game that has a longer timeframe, more nations, a bigger map, more units, more options,...

VV added some things that EU3 doesnt have, but for me it was far from enough and far from good enough to invest much time in.

Chapeau for the people that like it and enjoy it, but I think I had more fun with the demo then with the actual game, once I realised the demo was basiscly the actual game with just a different time limit. When I played the demo I could feel the potential for a great, or at least a good game, that is why I bought it. But playing the full game I soon felt they missed an oportunity here, they could have done so much more with the Rome setting.

Aah well they seem to be on track again with HOI3

You should not think of it as the purchase of a game, you should think of it as a donation to paradox for their awesome other games. Several of which have been some of the most cost-effective games I've ever bough. HoI2 for instance, the cents pr hour of entertainment has to be ridiculously low. You can also consider it a donation to paradox for keeping this nice forum running, OT and the AAR sub forum are certainly
among the things that I would regret living without.

And all we had to do was gossip about HoI3. :D

I would have paid $100 for EU3 and $200 for CK.

Rome... Not so much so I consider it a donation for the other two. I still play it, just that... Well it gets old quick.

I prefer paint because its not so confusing as other programs (first time i opened photoshop i had to close and uninstall it due to its pretty confusing interface).

But i also use GIMP when i want to change certain stuff.

Hi, I've decided to start a thread to discuss ways that we can revive the Rome Forum. Post your ideas here and we'll see where this goes.
Right now you are probably the biggest single factor contributing to this forum's "revival", if for nothing other than your impressive thread count. Well, spiffing good show I say.

In reality, EUR, especially combined with a patched VV is a great game. Probably one of the best I've ever played. ... Well, quite honestly, EURVV is the only game I've ever played for PC since I was ten.
We appreciate your candor but your admission here doesn't help your credibility much. That is, unless you are 11 years old now.

A very important thing to note when taking into account the criticism is that almost all the criticism comes from gamers who know paradox well and own several of their other games. ... Most of the people who write here and say they really liked the game, haven't played another paradox game before and so judge the game on its own merits.
I think this argument is pretty dubious. Of course all games deserve to be judge on their own merits in principle. But EUR is a Paradox game and it does bear "Europa Universalis" in its title. PI has cut no corners in associating EUR with the PI-EU games, so it is hypocritical for them to expect this game be judged on its own merits.

Furthermore, with the notable exception above, I highly doubt that there are many EUR players who are completely new to the genre -- new to Paradox, maybe. But even taking that in to account, it is still hard to argue that EUR is anything above an average game.

A poster above complained about Rome only giving him 5 games of entertainment, I don't know how long these games took. But a rough estimate of 7-10 hours would have given 35-50 hours of fun. Which is far more than most games out there, espacially at the Rome price range.
Many people here tend to consider replayability, or more quantitatively the total time spent with a game, as the single most important criteria for judging a game's value. I don't think this is meaningful at all. A game's worth is not the total time it kills, but the experience it gives you. Grim Fandango and The Longest Journey, both point-and-click adventure games costing about the same as EUR, have essentially no replay value. I've played them both twice with a gap of several years, taking altogether no more than 24 hours. But I still think, penny for penny, they worth as much as CK+DV or HoI2+DD, with which I've spent more time than I care to admit. In the same way, there are many films in my DVD library that I rarely touch, but they are just as valuable as those I watch often.

You're just showing off! I've never heard that word in my whole life. :p

I heard from somewhere that gimped means bad or something, just couldn't hold back that "play with words". Suppose it is useless to do so if none understand what I mean though :(
