The Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia supports the notion that a UN-monitored referendum in Goa shall be held over the issue of retention by The Republic of Portugal or transfer to the Republic of India. We live in an era of democracy, popular sovereignty and liberty: and it is the right of the peoples of the world to determine their future. It is our duty to ensure that the old imperialist order is done away with and democracy properly established throughout the world. Yugoslavia also votes in favour of UN arbitration.

The Treaty of Luxembourg
​

1. The Saar Protectorate, presently under French control, shall be incorporated into the Federal Republic of Germany as a Federal State, with all rights, privileges, and obligations therein, starting on January 1, 1957.

2. The French Republic shall gradually devolve its economic control over the Saar to the Federal Republic beginning in 1957; this process shall end no later than December 31, 1959.

3. The forces of the French Republic presently occupying the Saar shall be incorporated into the French Forces in Germany and shall adopt the posture of allied defense forces. Military authority in the Saar shall be devolved to the Federal Republic no later than December 31, 1959.

4. The French Republic acknowledges the Saar as a Federal State of the Federal Republic of Germany and an integral part of the German nation, ceding all claims to the contrary.

5. The French Republic and the Federal Republic mutually acknowledge the resulting border as their final and permanent border and cede all claims to the contrary.

6. The French Republic and the Federal Republic commit to mutual friendship and amity, whether as independent nations, members of the European community, or NATO allies.

James C. Hagerty : Yes, Mr. Smith, go ahead.

Howard K. Smith, ABC : Mr. Hagerty, what with the events transpiring in North Korea in recent weeks and months, what can we expect from the government, and particularly the administration of President Eisenhower, for whom you serve as a representative, in response?

JCG : I would first say that the President's stance towards communism has not shifted at all in previous months, and therefore I think it would be safe to say .... that President Eisenhower will be taking certain steps to ensure there is no greater threat to the stability, political and economic and otherwise, of the South Koreans .... and furthermore, he has already contacted President Rhee of South Korea, and has expressed his concern over the likelihood that the armistice will be broken in few short months or even weeks. If the war in Korea flares up again, it will not be because of the actions of the United States, or of the government in Seoul, but because of the communists.

HKS : Have the Chinese in Peking issued any formal statement that we are not already aware of? By which I mean: can we expect the Chinese to react economically, or even militarily, to the events in Pyongyang?

JCG : We have no reason to believe so. The policy of this government has always been the maintenance of continued peace around the world, and I believe Mr. Mao is aware of that fact. He knows that the United States Navy is not only larger than his navy, it is also better trained, and better equipped. The same goes for the Army and the Marines and the Air Force. We have no reason to believe, at the current time, that the Chinese will disrupt the peace that we worked so hard to achieve just a few short years ago. .... Mr. Swayze.

John C. Swayze, NBC : Mr. Hagerty, I am curious to know .... what are the President's thoughts on Mr. Presley's "Hound Dog"?

JCG : Well, I assure you that I cannot speak on behalf of the President for his musical tastes .... though I am not a fan of Mr. Presley personally, I suppose I can understand the appeal of that sort of music, that type of sound.

JCS : We have heard through various sources the possibility that the President actually will not be seeking a second term on the Republican ticket, and will instead back the Vice President at the Convention tomorrow. Is this true?

JCG : I can say beyond a reasonable doubt – [some reporters begin to laugh] – that the President most assuredly seeks to run for a second term, as he believes there is still a great deal of work to be done for the American people, both to tackle the issue of communism worldwide under Mr. Khrushchev, and, as well, to keep his promises that he made in the election of 1952. .... and for those curious, I heard some singer, an unknown fellow, will perform at the Convention tomorrow, a Mr. Cole? [more laughter from reporters]

The 6th Berlin International Film Festival

Started in 1951 as a celebration of global film-making, the Berlin International Film Festival, or Berlinale, opened its doors for twelve days in late June and early July to showcase the previous year's developments in international film. Each film is screened by the attendees, as well as jurors from across the world. The jurors are tasked with issuing awards to the most accomplished and meritorious films, regardless of their country of origin; this differs from last year's awards, which were given out based on audience feedback. This changeover to professional, internally selected jurors is likely the result of the FIAPF (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films) awarding the Berlinale "A-status," a distinction previously only offered to the festivals in Cannes and Venice.

This year, the Golden Bear was awarded to Gene Kelly's Invitation to the Dance, with Silver Bears awarded to Laurence Olivier's Richard III, Charles Frend's The Long Arm, and Andre Michel's La Sorcière. Individual Silver Bears were awarded to Robert Aldrich (Best Director, Autumn Leaves), Elsa Martinelli (Best Actress, Donatella), and Burt Lancaster (Best Actor, Trapeze). Honorable Mentions were given for direction (Alfonso Corona Blake, El camino de la vida), color (Shirō Toyoda, Byaku fujin no yoren), and humor (Dino Risi, Pane, amore e...).

Though many were critical of the jury's decision to award the Golden Bear to Invitation to the Dance, participants were nevertheless enthused by the festival and looked forward to next year's outing.

The Republic of Korea​

It saddens me to see that the Korean people's voices have been quelled yet again. While we are by no means displeased that the ironfisted brute Kim il-Sung has been overthrown, his likeness has simply been replaced by yet another Soviet crony. Indeed, with his replacement, the idea of a sovereign Korean people north of DMZ is all but tarnished. Even now, Maoist and Stalinist agents eradicate any sense of Korean culture, using the false excuses of "collectivism" and "internationalism." Thus, after considering the potential of Maoist-Bolshevik aggression from the new regime in the North, I have to decided to place all forces of the Republic of Korea on standby. Let it be known that any sign of aggression towards the Korean people will be met with an immediate and equal response.

The Treaty of Malmo​

1. The French Republic and the Kingdom of Sweden shall work to cooperate on the development and design of nuclear reactors that make use of naturally occurring uranium, reducing the requirement and usage of refined uranium for nuclear power, and with the goal of developing efficient reactors that produce abundant and clean electric power.

On the Situation in Sikkim

It is the opinion of the French government that, in light of the present occurrences, the United Nations is obliged to intercede on behalf of the Kingdom; however, the Republic is further of the opinion that the cession of the administrative freedoms and duties of Sikkim by either the state in Beijing or the Republic of India would be undesirable – rather, it would be ultimately preferable to re-establish the status quo of the former ruling house, be it a close relation or some distant branch. With the full knowledge that such a position may be impractical, if not outright impossible, the French Republic would find itself in full support of plebiscite held by the populous of Sikkim to determine her future, be it Indian or independent as either a monarchy or a republic.

Bolesław Bierut nie żyje

​

The ever giving soldier of the revolution, faithful son of the Polish nation, Secretary of the Central PZPR Committee, Bolesław Bierut, has died in the capital of Poland’s ally and liberator, Moscow.

Despite an ongoing battle with a serious lung infection, the helmsman of the Polish state and Polish liberation chose to attend the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, where he worked alongside other great minds of Communism to devise the new image for the world after the shocking death of the Supreme Liberator, Joseph Stalin. It is believed that the work undertaken at the Congress weakened the body of the ill Chairman, and that despite treatment by the best physicians in the world he perished shortly before midnight due to a stroke. The Chairman’s body will be flown back to Poland as soon as possible for a state funeral befitting such a colossus of the People’s Republic.

A Soviet delegation is expected for the funeral. The staff of the People’s Tribune has also received an extraordinary number of letters and memoirs of the deceased; the people of Poland praise their Chairman for his hard work, dedication and complete sacrifice to the cause of Poland and the Revolution.
