This year was one of the best the Dutch people have ever seen. This year, the Netherlands truly took their rightful place on the world stage. We are truly one of the greatest powers in the world. The Lowlanders have moved out of the shadow of nations like Prussia or France, and has started casting a shadow of its own upon every nation in the world.

I begin my summarization of the year with the industrializtion of Belgium. The region was already beginning industrialization, but now has a flourishing industry and local economy. I look forward to seeing this region develop in the future, and we will look towards the developing in years to come.

Next is the bulding of a railroad between Brussels and Antwerp and Amsterdam. It is truly a tribute to our engineers how well they can imrpve our nation so drastically in such little time. They are truly masters of their craft. Our nation can now take advantage of the factories in our great nation, and ship them to nations beyond our borders or inside of them.

Most important I think, is the creation of our constitution. I thank the nobles who have worked toward making this great document a reality, and I applaud their superb statesmanship. When this document is completed, it will provide rights to the people unparalled in our nation's history. I cannot wait until the document is finished and properly put into law.

Lastly is our expansion into Borneo. We are working on securing the coast, and soon the region will be open to immigration. Next year we hope to be able to capatilize upon the great success of our explorers and finish securing the rest of Borneo. I also am pleased to announce the expansion of our influence upon the world, when the Sultan of Brunei agreed to become a protectorate. We hope that we can further improve Brunei during their time as our protectorate.

Moving onto my hopes for next year, I begin with my plan for military and naval expansion. I hope to build 5 new large ships and 5 new small ships over the course of the year, and outfit them with the latest in military technology. I also am going to expand the military by 10,000 men, and train the entire army in the newest tactics from across the world. If we are to take our place on the world stage, we must have the military to match it.

Next, I hope to follow up our industrialization of the Belgian region, and make it the industrial powerhouse it ought to be. I am also going to attempt to create more railroads throughout the nation, and expand upon our existing infrastructure.

Thirdly, I am going to attempt to improve literacy within our nation, and make as amny people inside our county's borders able to read and write.

Lastly, I am going to continue work on our constitution, and it will opefully be finished and ready for implementation in two years. This will greatlly increase stability in the nation, and raise living standards considerably.

Thank you,
King William I, Protector of the Lowlands

President Martin Van Buren's State of the Union Address, 27 December 1839

My fellow Americans, members of Congress, and ambassadors from nations the world over;

It is for the first time in many years - since the administration of Thomas Jefferson in 1801 - that I speak before you all today to deliver a state of this Glorious Union to you all. It is with the intent of the following words that I am to inform the state of government affairs here and abroad. And so, I begin.

The Year of Our Lord 1839 was a year of pleasant surprises for government officials and the men of my administration, not the least of which included myself. The Congressional approval for tax incentives towards active capitalists and industrialists that help in expanding the economic output of our union, as well as the industrial capabilities of our nation, is a great leap forward for the economic power and capabilities of the nation, and has propelled us further towards true economic prosperity than any previous year both in my administration, as well as any President past. The subsidies of my administration towards the construction of rail-lines between New York City and Buffalo in the State of New York are but the first of many that are planned for the future that will eventually bring rail-lines far to the west of the grand Mississippi River into the newly-incorporated territories of our union. These construction efforts have guided new immigrants and agricultural workers far west to new beginnings and new lives in the new expansive lands of this country. It is my personal hope that these people can and will find economic prosperity after having moving to these new and ripe lands that were only recently acquired.

Meanwhile, we have experienced a great victory in the lands of our far southern neighbors. The newly-admitted State of Texas, a state as of just two short years ago, brought to the people of the United States the issue of Mexican imperialism and expansionism, aggressive behaviors in the face of the liberators that were the diplomats and administrators of our government. In the face of an unswerving Mexican Army, the American Army was brought to bear, our military resources mobilized, and, headed by the excellently skilled and experienced Winfield Scott and his companions Franklin Pierce and Zachary Taylor, they hammered out a victory against Santa Anna's "Army of Liberation", freeing Mexico from tyranny and destruction while securing a grand victory for our nation. In the treaty that ended the war, Mexico ceded to the United States - on part of monetary compensation - a large swathe of land to our far west, which is now called among the people of this nation the "Mexican Cession" - two Mexican territories which has grandly expanded the land area of our union, as well as bringing us to the coast of the great Pacific Ocean. This previously unimaginable victory by securing these lands has furthered and has guaranteed our economic prosperity in the future, as the total amount of resources in this area are untold and unknown; the rewards are boundless.

Our Navy has received an increase in budget spending, a successful effort in helping to defend our shores against commerce raiding, piracy of any time, and foreign aggression the form of trade-route raids and naval landings on our coast. Our navy is now a formidable force, particularly in the western hemisphere in which we reside, and will make the enemies of our nation think twice should they choose to attack our citizens, our property, or our territory.

And now, it is time for me, as President of these United States, to lay out my plans for this last year of my term as President. They are as follows: I will continue to pursue a policy of great economic growth in the form of corporate and business expansion and investments in industrial and infrastructural expansion; I will continue to support our democratic brothers throughout all of the Americas, including our brothers in Chile and our friends in Mexico and Central America; and I will continue to defend these United States from foreign aggression and imperialism. America, as a country and a continent, is a land of opportunity, freedom, justice, and democracy, free from monarchism and imperialism. Foreign expansion and colonization is not welcomed by any citizen of any American nation on these American continents. If these warnings are ignored, or if citizens, territory, or property of American citizens is threatened by foreign expansion and aggression, the government will respond with the use of force in the form of the American Army and Navy. We achieved it once in the form of Mexican aggression, and we shall easily do it again.

It has also been brought to my attention that, as this is my last year serving as President in this term, I shall refrain from running for re-election - a second term - on the Democratic ticket. I have served as President of a great nation, this great union, and did what I could for this nation as we have grown territorially and economically. We are more formidable economically, diplomatically, and militarily, than ever before. But my time has come and is close to being gone. It is now time for yet another great American to be chosen by you, the American people, as leader of this great democracy.

These United States are on a great path of growth and expansion, but not at the expense of other states or peoples. I shall continue this policy for so long as I am President of these States.

~ Martin Van Buren, President of the United States

((And now you see why US got the +1))

His Royal Majesty, Frederick VI, King of the Danes and Protector of the Norwegians, wishes the best to his friend, Mr. van Buren, who, over the course of these three years, has served as President of the United with great honour and dignity. In his final year in office, we hope to see the American Republic, which has served as an inspiration to the latest of Danish constitutional reforms, continue to growth in terms of land, population, and prosperity. As this term draws to a close, and his successor is chosen, I hope that, whoever that man may be, he is a worthy follow-up to a true symbol of American democracy. His Majesty also wishes to extend an offer for Mr. van Buren to feel free to visit Copenhagen any time he wishes; he will be always be an honoured guest in Denmark!

His Majesty also wishes to congratulate the King of the Netherlands on his recent reforms and improvements; never have the Dutch people been made so strong or unified!

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland will take this time to hail the new development in the Midlands. Although Her Majesty's Government has been working with some private industrialists over this past time, we are as always glad to have private investors expand operations and open new factories across this great nation. While it is unfortunate that the Machine Tools needs for the factories are in huge demand, and that we cannot access a large amount of them at this time, we will be working on opening new factories for machine tools to help the global market and the local markets. With labor shortages, we announce that we shall be relocating new factories and expanding production to Southeast England, to stop the concentration of factories in the Midlands.

Moving on the the subject of Colonies and dependencies, we are pleased to announce that colonial offices have been expanded and solidified New Anglia. From now, we encourage citizens of the Empire to move to this new, lush, land, and to work in expanding the cities here, to help establish a local economy, so that New Anglia can become a productive part of the Empire, as South Africa, British North America, Australia, and British India are now. We applaud those who are currently living in New Anglia, and announces the creation of a new port, for the British Navy, as well as British Fishermen.

Across the Oceans in Oceania, the British Empire is pleased to announce the settlement and foundation of Auckland, which will be administered by the Colony of New South Wales. Here, we hope to expand over the North Island and the South Island. In doing so, we shall be following a new policy, considering the Maori Peoples of the Island. Any and all land we gain on these islands will be purchased from the Maori, and no land will be taken from them by force. We will respect their property rights, and recognize them as people that we must respect, but at the same time we must provide Good Governance. Good Governance, a tenement of the foundation of the British Empire, will now serve as the basis of Colonial Rule across the Empire. With this, we also announce the new Policy of the United Kingdom.

The Native Peoples Rights Act of 1840 is to be passed by the British Parliament this year. In it, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland will be granting such basic tenements of life and liberty to the native peoples of the Empire. Following this new advancement, the native peoples of South Africa, New Anglia, British North America, British India under control of the Crown, and British Guyana, shall be given the ability to buy, own, and sell property. As such, taking land from them is now illegal, and citizens of the British Empire, and citizens of other nations, will be punished for taking land without paying the dues for that land to the full extent of British Law. Another part of this new law is that peoples who swear loyalty to the British Crown will be given a method and a pathway to expanded rights, and even British Citizenship. Furthermore, to make it formal, any areas under control of the British Empire, and not those of the British East India Company, have slavery abolished, now and forever. While we do not believe this well effect more than one hundred slaves, this gesture is to prove to the world that the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland is committed to the progress of all mankind.

Moving abroad, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland now must address several issues on the international scale. First, we must move to the Kingdom of Greece. The Ionian Islands, once a part of the British Empire, now enjoy the good governance of the Kingdom of Greece. If we had not believed the Kingdom of Greece could not handle these islands, we would not have transferred them over to them. It is with this that we recognize the Kingdom of Greece has the ability and the likelihood to continue to rise amongst the nations of the world, we are certain she will forge her own path for herself. The will of the Greek People will never be trampled, and they will continue to expand. It is with great honour that I announce her British cousins will stand by her side! We shall not site idle as the Greeks need our help, nor will they do the same for us.

To the United States of America, while relations between out two countries have been strained over certain issues, Her Majesty's Government would like to make it clear it considers her close relation with the United States to stand firm, and the cultural, economic, and historic ties we hold are unbreakable. We shall extend our hand to the United States of America, not as the Mother Country, but as another nation in the world, to reaffirm our good intentions in improving relationships between our two nations. We will look to each other to move forward, and to excel in many areas. We must also applaud their recent decisions on expanding Westward, both with population and with Railroads. While saying all of this, we would like to pose a simple request to the United States. We request that the recent announcement of a Naval Buildup be used for good, and that no ill-will should be felt between our nations. As a show of good will, Her Majesty's Government will open up the Port of Bermuda, and extend the usage of the Port of Jamaica for the United States Navy, as well as Commercial Vessels of the United States to use at their will.

To Asia, we announce our support for the Declaration of Jiangning. We feel that this increased cooperation with the Qing Empire is to the benefit of both nations. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland will assist the Qing Empire economically, and with the revitalization of their Empire. We also must speak out against the actions of the Kingdom of Dai Nam. They had full knowledge of what their actions would bring to them, and instead they went through with it. The continued tensions between the Kingdom of Dai Nam and the Qing Empire are one that we will monitor, but at this time we will support neither side should they take actions against each other.

We must applaud the progress of our Russian Brothers. Their efforts to connect and expand their railways, thus improving communications and transportation in their Empire, is a noble cause for what has been recently, in common lexicon, a backwards Empire. We will assist our friends and allies in expanding these rails, as it could only benefit the Russian Empire in the future.

As we wrap up our Annual Message to the Courts of the World, we now must welcome another one of our friends, the Kingdom of Prussia, to the position as a Colonial Power. Although as of now, they only hold one port in China, we hope that the recently established Royal Prussian Colonial Company will continue to expand and establish bases and colonies around the world, expanding the Kingdom of Prussia, which we see a large future ahead for it. In such, we announce to the world that the Kingdom of Prussia now has unlimited usage of British Ports around the world. We warn the Prussians to not abuse this privilege, as if they do, the British Empire will be forced to take very drastic and swift actions against them.

This next year will be great for both the British Empire and the world as a whole. We express out intent to ensure that the World's Seas will remain free and open as always, and we urge the nations of the world that peace, above all, is necessary for the continued survival of our nations, and is truly the only way forward, the only path for progress, the greatest hope for all of mankind.

This has been a message from Her Majesty's Government.

I thank the British for their continued support and friendship. We have accomplished great deeds together before and shall try and continue the relationship it created. Though we expect the road to not be without bumps and curves, it is worth the effort. We both stand to gain greatly from staying on good terms.

We are a bit unease at the Scandinavian situation but so long as the problems stay focused away from our borders we should be able to keep calm the generals and admirals. Russia needs stability and calm along its borders to work ourselves through this new age of industry. The path others follow is not typically that for Russia. We may at times share the same course but will need to diverge away to protect ourselves. To that end we are taking steps to better enhance our Asiatic security, though none of our responsible neighbors need fear from our actions.

United States of America

I would like to gladly accept Her Majesty Queen Victoria's hand of friendship and trust, as we two sovereign nations travel together through this period of economic growth and expansion. I would also like to reassure Her Majesty's government that the improvement of training and equipment for American naval vessels is purely a defensive measure and is not meant to provoke any rash action from Her Majesty's government or any other sovereign nations. The expansion of our union to the coast of the Pacific Ocean warrants that we keep a capable and strong navy to protect our territory and our citizens against foreign aggression. I would also like to thank Her Majesty's government for opening vital ports in the Atlantic, including the ports of Bermuda and Jamaica, which shall prove vital for the expansion and growth of American trans-Atlantic maritime trade. These moves are greatly appreciated by the United States government and her people.

Now, I would like to move onto the rebellions in Central America. With the near-collapse of any visible order and authority in the region, with the Central American Republic on the verge of collapse and the declaration by rebellious diplomats and government officials for independence that is not only unjustified but completely illegitimate, the United States of America will take action against those that threaten to poison and destroy the brothers and friends of the people of these United States. The American Government request that these rebels lay down their arms and return to the land of which they themselves have "declared war" upon, or they shall find themselves gravely disadvantaged when military resources of the United States are put in place to restore order to these rebellious provinces.

Great People of Egypt, Sudan and Greater Syria. We have worked hard and bleed but the hapless Ottomans have had to work harder and have bleed even more for what little progress they have made. We will move forward to the Modern Era together. No man or Women left behind in the old ages. Egypt will be a beacon of Modernity and Civilization as it was under the Great Pharaohs of old. Egypt was great then. But now it shall be even Greater as we have Allah on our side now. The decadent Ottoman Turks are of a old age. The Time of the Arabs is now. A new dawn is rising on the Middle east and We shall grasp it and turn the Middle east into a True land of plenty. Forward to victory and wealth. Allahu Akbar.

The Battle of Mendoza and the Argentine Election

General-Justo-Jos%C3%A9-de-Urquiza.jpg

The Hero of Argentina

In early 1839 Chile and Argentina started trading insults. Angered by the Argentine words and edged on by the local Governor around 50 Chileans crossed the border into Argentina, while the Border Guards were banging pots in Buenos Aires for a better wage, to attempt to claim some of the new Argentine mines for Chile. Having been asked several times to leave the Chileans refused. When the Argentine Border Guards returned and attempted to arrest the Chileans they resisted and using old muskets and swords held the poorly armed Border Guards off.

After this incident Rosas, who was in Mendoza, came personally to the mine and, after demanding the surrender of the Chileans, personally led two Companies of the Presidential Guards in an assault on the Chilean positions. Despite being wounded twice Rosas continued to lead his men forcing the surrender of the Chileans an hour after the attack commenced. The total casualties for both sides were: 15 Chileans dead, 10 wounded and 20 prisoners. The Argentines lost 3 killed and 10 wounded among whom was Rosas himself.

After this incident a full regiment of the Chilean Army, under the command of the governor of La Serena, moved to take control of the mine and the area around it. Rosas had however predicted this response and ordered the entire regiment of Presidential Guards to move to a position along the top of the pass that was the most direct way to the mine. As the Chileans advanced slowly up the pass Rosas ordered 2 Battalions of his Guards to block their path. The Chileans advanced and started exchanging fire with the Guardsmen.

The Governor had grown impatient however and ordered his men to charge the Argentines. Rosas then ordered the last battalion which had been hiding in the trees to charge the Chileans from behind while he led his 100 Cavalrymen in an attempt to capture or kill the Chilean Commander. The Chileans, faced with an attack by the best force Argentina had to offer, broke immediately. The Governor and his cavalry were caught off guard by Rosas’ attack and were almost immediately routed. Rosas himself brought the Governor down while the rest of his men ensured that few managed to escape the field. In the aftermath of this incident both nations placed their armed forces on high alert preparing themselves for a possible attack by the other.[-1,000 regulars from Chile, -500 regulars from Argentina]

Two months after the Battle of Mendoza the Argentine election was due to take place. Rosas had decided not to run for re-election and the signs were that the Liberal candidate, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, would win.
This was all before the battle however. After the events of the Battle of Mendoza a massive wave of patriotism swept the country, the flag was flown from every house, every tree. As the sun rose over the sleepy Chilean village under the shadow of the great mountain of Aconcagua, the villagers looked up at a mountain they considered practically divine. They were astounded to see the Flag of Argentina fluttering on the mountain side.

Even the Liberals were caught up in the patriotism, Esteban Echeverria, author of The Captive and one of the most important Liberals climbed to the top of the Presidential Palace in Chile and removed the Chilean flag placing the Argentine one at the top of the building, he then climbed back down and rode at a gallop for the Argentine border pursued the whole time by Chilean cavalrymen. Just before crossing the border Echeverria dismounted and wrote at the side of the road: ON NE TUE POINT L’ARGENTINE! He then sprinted for the border with the Chileans on his tail.

They were turned back by the sight of Rosas himself leading a patrol of Argentine cavalry.

After this, Echeverria announced that he would be voting for Juan Manuel Rosas despite the fact that he was not even on the ballot. This led a number of prominent Liberals to follow him; prominent among them was Domingo Sarmiento who announced that he would no longer be running and instead endorsed “The Hero of Argentina”, Juan Manuel de Rosas.

Rosas still refused to run however and it seemed that the Caudillo’s candidate José de Urquiza would become President. However at the last moment he agreed to step down and endorse Rosas. In the face of possible anarchy Rosas finally agreed to run.

However he only managed to get 2% of the vote with the winner being “The Hero of Argentina” reflecting the Argentine peoples wish for a proper Democracy, not a dictatorship like that of their previous President, Juan Manuel de Rosas. [+1 Stability to Argentina, Rosas democratically elected President; Chile has wrong flag on Presidential Palace.]

The Government and People of the Free Republic of Chile would like to extend a formal diplomatic apology to the Federal Republic of Argentina. The actions of the few do not reflect the opinions and thoughts of the many, and this is no more than in tragedy that occurred at Mendoza. Chile in neither supported nor condoned the actions of La Serena's erstwhile governor, who had heretofore been a loyal and law abiding subject of this great Republic. We mourn the tragic deaths of our men in uniform, as well as the deaths of the Argentinians; no one needed to have perished in such a petty conflict as this. The actions of the Governor are tantamount to Treason and Murder, and we ask that the Argentine Government hand him over so that he may be prosecuted for his crimes against his republic, and tried accordingly.

In these dark days, level heads must prevail: Chile will not go to war with our neighbour due to the rash actions of one of our public servants. We offer our most sincere condolences to those who had their loved ones meet an untimely end, Chilean and Argentine both. We will also be changing the flag on our Presidential Residence back to the proud Chilean banner, and we invite Sr. Echeveirra to a changing of the Guard ceremony, sometime in the future, when normalcy is returned to this fair continent.

I must inform Prussia and the world of the passing of my father, Mahmud II. I can only hope my reign will be as great as his.

Nevertheless, I sign the Treaty of Tunis.

The Kingdom of Bavaria - A yearly adress.

The Last year has been a magnificent one for the Kingdom of Bavaria, our great Kingdom and Nation has advanced in many ways.

The Advances of the Beer Brewing industry are a welcoming thing for our subjects, while you may be distrustful to whether this beer can be of the same quality as the more traditionally brewed one, i can assure you i have tried it and it is of excellent quality and even though the methods of Production change, the Bavarian Cleanness edict is still intact, and no chemistry shall find its way ever into this magnificent product of Bavarian Culture.
The State-Railroad company will continue to grow in the coming years with a full North-South Railroad, running from Landau over Kempten Augsburg, Nördlingen, Nürnberg, Bamberg to Hof, from where we will see if further connection onto Coburg may be required. In my opinion, this is the only way to assure that the Bavarian infrastructure can keep pace with the wheel of progress, which in the last decades seems to be turning ever more quickly.
We are saddened at the rejection of our offer of Monetary Union, a proposal which surely would have led to more monetary stability in the Region and would spur the development as Stability means prosperity.

For the Future years to come we must be prepared for new discoveries, Photography is a magnificent invention my grand-father would not have dared to dream off, and every year more breathtaking developments come. We must be quick and adaptable, or we will not be as successful as we were in the past.
May the Future Shine, and may it shine bright, on Bavaria.

GM: Following Sultan Abdülmecid I's revocation of the Treaty of Budapest less than a month after it was signed, international perception of the Ottoman Empire has dropped and many world powers consider any proposed agreement by the Ottomans to be inherently suspect.

The government of New Granada, is happy with the return of peace to the South American region. With the result of a settlement in the Argentinian and Chilean conflict. May peace and prosperity reign in the region again!

The Austrian Empire is disappointed with the Ottomans. However due to our full support of them in the war with their Governor I will still be sending 5,000 men to assist in defeating Egypt.

The Imperial Court is pleased by the concordat reached between our two most loyal lieutenants, the King of Prussia and the Queen of English. We hope that this putative partnership shall endure for many more years to come. The Central State, and these two nations of the Western Ocean, are all committed to upholding peace and tranquillity across the globe. There shall be scope for cooperation in future, to ensure free trade between our respective domains and steady peace on our borders. Finally, we bestow all favourable fortunes on the Royal Prussian Company and its enterprise. We are sure that the Prussian people are as industrious as their ruler is civil and wise.

~ His Imperial Majesty, the Emperor of the Great Qing, Son of Heaven, Lord of Ten Thousand Years
