[X] His Excellency, Baron Heinrich von Bülow; for His Royal Majesty, Friedrich Wilhelm III, King of Prussia

Prussia.jpg

The Kingdom of Prussia

Know now that I speak on behalf of His Royal Majesty Friedrich Wilhelm III, by the Grace of God King of Prussia, Margrave of Brandenburg, Grand Duke of Luxemburg and of Posen, Duke of Silesia and of Pommerania, Prince of Neuchâtel, with many other titles besides.

It is with surpassing pleasure and pride that I announce the formation of the Royal Prussian Colonial Company. This organization has been granted a royal mandate to maintain and oversee the Kingdom of Prussia's overseas possessions on behalf of His Royal Majesty Friedrich Wilhelm III, beginning with our port of Yazhou. On behalf of all Germans and in harmonious partnership with the Empire of the Great Qing, the Kingdom of Prussia strides forward into the future to join the exalted ranks of the colonial empires and extend our great culture to the uncivilized island-dwellers of the East Indies.

The Kingdom of Prussia also notes without any particular surprise the latest disruptive comments from the French King of Sweden, whose advisors are clearly as staggeringly incompetent in foreign policy as they are in domestic affairs. Prussia extends its greatest sympathies to the people of Sweden and Norway, currently languishing under their imposed monarch's bizarre and unstable rule, and compliments them on their heroic tolerance for their king's failing mental health. We commend the efforts by the Kingdom of Denmark to promote a stable and harmonious Scandinavia.

Finally, His Royal Majesty wishes to make known that he has dispatched his son, Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm, on a diplomatic tour of the North German states to rally support for the Treaty of Frankfurt. It is His Majesty's belief that the current German Confederation is insufficient to meet the challenges of this new industrial era and that stronger ties between all Germans are essential. As further proof of our sincere desire for German unity, the Kingdom of Prussia is willing to offer substantial industrial subsidies to the North German signatories of the treaty.

1838 was a year of great advances and growth for the Kingdom of Prussia and it is our sincere hope that 1839 will follow in that same vein, with peace, prosperity, and international amity.

~ Karl Friedrich von Wylich und Lottum, Count Lottum, Chief Minister to His Royal Majesty

I must say, the Dutch have come far since the same time five years ago. Our industry is booming, the Lowlands are unified, and our colonies are flourishing. I commend the officials of Amsterdam who came to me with the idea of a fair and equal minimum wage. They saw the problems that could have arisen from exploitation of the lower class, and moved to counter it. For this I am overjoyed.

Our colonies in Sumatra are now better than ever, with relations with the natives amenable. I am going to expand our holdings in the East Indies, starting with the island of Borneo. In other Eastern news, our attendance at the Chinese convention has helped our economy enormously, and I relations can improve further in the future. In yet other Eastern events, our trade treaty with the Shogunate of Japan has led to commerce flowing freely between our nations.

In a great act of our bravery by our soldiers, the lowlands are now more peaceful than they have been in a decade. Because of this, I am demobilizing our reserves: our soldiers deserve to return home. They truly are amazing people.

New Magic Images

By 1829 Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre had already established himself in the French artistic scene. Landscape painter, print-maker and even theatrical entrepreneur, Daguerre had been experimenting with light effects for a decade and using them in his Parisian shows. In that year he became associated with Nicéphore Niépce; both men interested in finding a more permanent mean for the preservation of an image. Niépce had already a working method, using chemicals and a sensible plate, but his results were disappointing thus far.

Louis_Daguerre_2.jpg

Louis Daguerre

For the following years the partnership slowly improved the process, until Niépce's sudden death in 1833 when Daguerre buys full control from the former's heirs and carried on with the research. Unfortunately for him, the images on the plates were still of poor quality and the exposure took hours to achieve some level of result. The industrial boom that was taking place in southern France caught his attention instead and Daguerre moved to Lyon, where he opened a new theatre in April 1838.

Further attempts at photography were abandoned until an event in the next year's Autumn reignited his interest. After the theatre in Lyon proved to be a financial failure, Daguerre sells it with the idea in his mind of returning to Paris. While his luggage was being transported back to the french capitol, a suitcase containing his photographic equipment fell from the wagon, only to be promptly and discretely, be put back in it's place by the coachman.

Back at Paris, Daguerre finds to his dismay that a small phial of mercury had burst, spreading it's content over the unused photographic plates. However, these plates turned out to be much more capable of holding the images than the ones left untouched by the chemical. For the rest of the year, Daguerre works secretly over his invention being able to achieve a better image with a shorter time of exposure. Baptizing his invention as the Daguerréotype, he markets it to the Parisians as a miraculous device that instantly creates pictures. Shortly, the city got caught in the frenzy and 200.000 Daguerreotypes were made in a month.

One of the first Daguerréotypes of a living person

The interest over this new invention soon reached the halls of the National Academy of Sciences, that issues an invitation to the inventor to show his process. Ever jealous of his idea, Daguerre agrees to make a private demonstration for its Secretary François Arago, who becomes one of his greatest supporters.

In November 1839, with the ink of the Royal Decree still fresh, Arago announces that Daguerre sells his invention to the French State, in return for a lifelong pension for himself and Niépce's heirs. In return, the Secretary of the Academy announces that the principles of photorgaphy will be made known to the general public as "a gift from France to the World"

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland would like to express joy with the developments in New Anglia. Very soon, ports and proper British Towns will spring up, bring good and secure Government to this area. We are pleased to announce our agreements with the Republic of Chile and the Republic of Argentina in settling all of our border disputes. We are happy that an agreement could be reached, and trust both nations will remain at peace with the United Kingdom and New Anglia.

Regarding the subject of colonies, Her Majesty's Government is pleased to announce that we shall begin with the colonisation and settling of the North Island and the South Island, off the coast of the Colony of New South Wales. These islands and their people shall be administered as a portion of New South Wales. Following this proclamation, we consider any attempt to establish any ports, settlements, or trading posts in this area will be seen as an infringement of the United Kingdom's Territory, and will be met as a solid declaration of War against the United Kingdom.

Moving on to Domestic Affairs, we applaud the recent growth in Industry, and hope that these new factories can produce the items and tools we need to bring the British Navy into the future, and that future is steam. With the recent launch, and great success, of the SS Great Western, owned and operated by the Great Western Steamship Company, we announce that our efforts into making Warships similar to the Great Western, although with a modified design, are underway. We ask all nations to look at our progress, but to warn them against pursuing a Navy as large and as advanced as the British Navy, as doing so would threaten trade routes and the Stability we now see over the seas, which the United Kingdom is providing for the world.

Talking Diplomatically, we hail the Russian Empire, and hope that our friendship will grow, and that the help we have provided will prove to be beneficial to the nation as a whole. The United Kingdom and the Russian Empire share a common goal, of Peace and Stability, against all those who would try to upset the Balance of Power.

In Asia, we must speak out against the recent agreement with the Qing Empire and the Kingdom of Prussia. The Port of Yazhou, which is set to change hands to the Kingdom of Prussia, is an agreement that we must take a strong stance against. Without proper British control in that area, we are afraid that we will work to block any such transfer of territory unless the United Kingdom is given an equal deal, to which we can use to ensure trade is kept free, and that their is a sense of Balance in the Area. The inclusion of a Major Power into the area could, given time, result in the destabilisation of the Qing Empire, and a collapse of Trade in the area. This is something we must take a strong stance against, and as such we will.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain would also like to announce a Treaty is to be signed between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Greece, in which we shall endow them with a Gift, to help this Kingdom prosper and develop along the Mediterranean Coast.

This has been a message from Her Majesty's Government.

The Generation of 1838

Inspired by the French and English Romanticists, a generation of young writers and thinkers has risen in Argentina. Born during or right after the Independence wars many of them were amongst first graduates of the University of Buenos Aires, established during the ill-fated liberal period of the 1820s and belonged to the most prominent families of the city. To exchange their ideas, they founded the Literary Salon in 1827, that gathered once every week in a local cafe, and soon became well known in the local life. A common element to them all was their liberal ideology, their praise of Europe and all things European and an ardent opposition of Rosas and his regime, which soon became a dangerous combination.

Esteban Echeverria's The Captive was the first piece of Argentine romantic poetry and it told the tragic story of a woman escaping from prison amongst the Indians and her ultimate death in the desert. Praised by his writing, Echeverria´s next short story, The Slaughterhouse was a very transparent attack against Rosas and his supporters, accusing them of maintaining an army of thugs that spread barbarism.

6_s.jpg

The Captive

Juan Bautista Allberdi took a different approach; interested in political theory he became a lawyer in 1837. His political essay Basis and Starting Points for the Political Organization of the Argentine Republic was a new constitution in all but name; as it worked from the United States' Constitution as a framework and adding the swarm of treaties that regulated the inter-province relations in the 1830s. Basis... depicted a federal system that upheld all the liberties held dear by the young generation and it was a balanced system that many people could agree to, both Unitarian and federal, even though it left some key points not settled.

In the western province of San Juan, the self made journalist, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, was already in a collision course against the local federal Governor, as his inflammatory articles were permanently attacking him and his policies. In retaliation, Sarmiento's paper was closed after its fifth number and was bluntly told to be quiet or else. Not accepting to shut up, he wrote Civilization or Barbarism, in which he denounced the inevitable clash between the rural, barbarian gaucho and the educated, European city-dweller; all set in a wonderful prose that depicted the pampas.

sarmiento+civilizaci%25C3%25B3n+barbarie.jpg

Sarmiento and his book

Rosas' initiative of writing a Constitution raised the collective's hopes, only to be crashed when all the delegates were handpicked by either Rosas or the other Governors loyal to him; therefore, they see it only as a charade to legitimize the "tyrant Rosas." His reelection as both Governor of Buenos Aires (the richest of all provinces) and as President of Argentina further inflamed the group's position

The initial Government response was to ignore the group, seeing them as spoiled brats with too much spare time; however it all changed when The Slaughterhouse leaked to the general public, against its writer's will, in the middle of a crackdown of dissenters during 1838. Then the Salon was forced to close and all its members were constantly harassed, until exile in Montevideo, Santiago de Chile or Rio de Janeiro became the only option. Vowing to overthrow Rosas, with both the pen and the sword, one by one the members of the generation left Argentina.

Last to leave, Sarmiento headed to cross the Andes into Chile. While resting at a stop, gets of his mule, grabs a rock and writes besides the road "ON NE TUE POINT LES IDEES" (Ideas can't be killed)

Unfortunately for the young Generation, Ideas can't be killed but Idealists can.

[-5 prestige to Argentina, Argentine liberals ardently anti-Rosas]

The Kingdom of Prussia

Know now that I speak on behalf of His Royal Majesty Friedrich Wilhelm III, by the Grace of God King of Prussia, Margrave of Brandenburg, Grand Duke of Luxemburg and of Posen, Duke of Silesia and of Pommerania, Prince of Neuchâtel, with many other titles besides.

While the Kingdom of Prussia maintains that any arrangement regarding our Kingdom and the Empire of the Great Qing remains solely the affair of our two nations, His Royal Majesty's great respect and affection for Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom compels him to pursue an equitable diplomatic solution to Her Majesty's concerns. We believe that the Great Qing's admirable desire to learn from foreign powers should certainly extend to the United Kingdom's unparalleled Royal Navy, universally acknowledged as the pre-eminent naval force of our time, and that a similar bilateral agreement to our own would be in the best interest of both parties.

In happier news, I am extraordinarily pleased to announce the birth of Prince Friedrich of Prussia, the firstborn son of Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Prussia and Princess Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria. His good health and fine temperament are excellent proof of the strength and fertility of the House of Hohenzollern and our entire Kingdom is united in its immense pride of our newest Prince. In Prince Friedrich's honor, His Royal Majesty has declared a day of celebration and respite across the entire Kingdom, so that every Prussian subject may know a portion of the joy His Majesty felt upon receipt of this excellent news.

Battle of Nezib

In the middle of 1838, the Ottoman Turks, feeling stronger from their recent defeat at the hands of Muhammad Ali and Egypt in the Egyptian–Ottoman War, surged into Syria, vastly outnumbering the Egyptians almost two to one. Outside of the settlement at Nezib, a Battle quickly began to unfold between Ibrahim Pasha's Egyptians and Hafiz Osman Pasha's Ottomans. With this sudden battle, the Egyptians began to advance on the Ottomans under Artillery fire, but it was soon silenced and countered by Egyptian Heavy Artillery. The resulting exchanged lasted for the duration of the Egyptians moving on the Ottoman Lines.

As the shells landed around the Ottomans, their commander, Helmuth von Moltke of Prussia, was in a tent a little removed from the battle, directing artillery fire and trying to gain the upper hand once again. As he stepped out of his tent to focus his spyglass on the enemy positions, a shell slammed into the ground next to him, throwing him in the air, and a few feet away. When the dust settled, the Captain was alive, but his arm was blown clear off, and his left eye was missing. It was a miracle he was still alive, and he was whisked away from the battle.

The wounding of their commander resulted in poor and shoddy gunning, and more and more were offline, allowing the Egyptians to focus on the Ottoman Soldiers, who became sitting ducks. By the time the battle progressed, and the Egyptians finally reached the Ottoman Lines, they were in a full retreat, abandoning equipment as they went, and only a few stayed to fight the Egyptians. The battle was a complete rout for the Ottomans, as they retreated back into Ottoman-controlled territory, giving Egypt its first victory in the Second Ottoman-Egyptian War.

As news of this spread, now called the "Oriental Crisis", people looked on with interest to the Ottoman Empire, and the upstart Egyptians. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland was the first to proclaim their support for the Ottoman Empire, wishing to remove the Egyptians from Syria, and restore order with the form of Ottoman Government. While the United Kingdom made their stance clear, the rest of Europe has yet to respond to these actions.

With the Ottomans in retreat, however, the prospects of yet another Egyptian Victory seemed rather likely, although they were still outnumbered, they proved that such statistics did not effect them.

The Kingdom of Prussia hereby recalls Captain Helmuth von Moltke from his period of detached service in the Ottoman Army. His Royal Majesty commends Captain von Moltke on his valorous service and looks forward to meeting him personally.

His Royal Majesty has also instructed me to announce Prussia's neutrality in the Oriental Crisis. It is our Kingdom's considered belief that this conflict is an internal matter of the Ottoman Empire and does not necessitate any interference on Prussia's part. We encourage any Great Powers without a specific interest in the region to adopt a similar stance to preserve the balance of power and keep the peace in Europe.

~ Friedrich Ancillon, Foreign Minister

Speech given to the assembled representatives of the bicameral parliament in Mr. Prieto's Final state of the Union

Chile's democracy has never been so strong, amigos. This is all in thanks to your diligent efforts at expanding the rights of suffrage and creating a safe haven from the trials and tribulations of the old world. Chile will truly become a bastion of freedom and democracy in these dark days, when tyrants rule countries from behind high walls and from the barrel of a gun; gunships force whole nations to their knees and hypocrites lambast their opponents for a position they themselves held just a few months prior. But Chile is none of these things. Chile is a free, prosperous state with strong ties to her brothers in the United States and United Kingdom, both of whom espouse these very same ideals.

The situation across South America is very disconcerting for me, as it should be for you and the people you represent. In Argentina the dictator, Rosas claims to be a dully elected president of his 'republic', yet all know this to be farce. Brilliant minds are forced from their homes in La Plata, and seek refuge here, in Uruguay and Brazil. Rosas has shown himself to be a tyrant, and must be treated as such. No one man should so much unchecked power over his people, and least of all that man.

In the south, the British seek to establish a colony, which is all well and good. The nation, with your support, while recognize the boundaries of New Anglia; which the British will hopefully reciprocate and recognize our own borders in Patagonia. Chile is, and always will be a friend to the United Kingdom, they are a strong example of a free and fair democracy, something that the autocrats in Europe should take heed of.

America has proven once more to be a valuable ally and indeed, a Pan-American brother to the nation. Her investments have greatly improved infrastructure and the recent bilateral trade agreement is nothing less than lucrative for both parties. Chileans and Americans shall profit from these arrangements for generations to come, amigos. The railway from Valparaiso to Concepcion will soon be completed, and our two great ports linked in perpetuity. Hurrah for the Americans and their aid!

In the North, the true villainy of the Peru-Bolivian Confederacy has been shown, their ruthless attacks against Chileans living in Antofagasta and even across our own borders are ridiculous, and we must put an end to this. I hereby sever all diplomatic ties with the government in La Paz, and encourage the Peruvians to break off their Bolivian shackles and declare their independence. If the Bolivians continue their occupation of Peru, Chile will be forced to take action against them.

Muhammad Ali rightful ruler of Egypt, Sudan,Hedjaz and Syria denounces the cruel barbarism of the Ottoman Sultan. They have attacked me a Loyal Vassal of the Sultanate. I never took more than we were promised. Syria was taken in war yes but it was promised to me for my aid in defeating Greek rebels. Despite the Ultimate failure of this campaign my demand for Syria was righteous and just. The Ottoman Sultan refused to part with lands that were rightfully mine and so we were forced to force his hand. And now he strikes back and tries to take back my land which he promised me and is rightfully mine. I call upon all supporters of fairness and modernness to support me and my Modern Egyptian state over the outdated collapsing wreck that is the Sultanate. While they slowly crumble my territory stands strong. Egypt is a beacon of moderity and progress in the Darkness of Africa and Asia. This does of course not include the colonies of the Great Powers but for others it is a sign that they too can turn there back of backwardness and the old ways and embrace the new order of the World. The Sultan seeks to cripple progress while I embrace it. I have no will to destroy the Ottoman Sultanate. Just protect my lands from his false claims. If I need to take more of his to make him see reason then so be it. Soon Egypt will join the Modern era along with the other states of Europe and the Americas who have already made it there.

The whole nation is proud of the achievements of Monsieur Daguerre. His inventions are certainly one of the biggest breakthroughs in science up to this date – it truly shows how powerful the mind of a Frenchman can be when set on the right path. The King of the French encourages all scientists, from here and abroad, to study and do their research in France. Our Kingdom provides an excellent breeding ground for innovation and ideas, and peace-time technology development is one of our priorities. The French government and King both extend congratulations to the brilliant Monsieur Daguerre and wish him further success in his field of science.

THE AUSTRIAN EMPIRE

In the name of His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty, Ferdinand I, I would like to announce that the Austrian Empire will support the Ottoman Sultan in his effort to subdue his rebellious subject in Egypt. However in the interest of the stability and peace of Europe I would like to invite the leaders of the Great Powers of Europe to a Conference in the city of Vienna so that we can settle this matter once and for all.

On another matter I am happy to convey the congratulations of the Emperor to the success of our troops in Italy in holding off the Sicilian onslaught next year we shall end this war and remove the mad Sicilian from his throne!

State Chancellor of the Austrian Empire Prinz Klemens Wenzel Nepomuk Lothar, Fürst von Metternich-Winneburg zu Beilstein, acting on behalf of His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty, Ferdinand I
