Treaty of Torino

[X] Charles Albert, King of Sardinia Piedmont

Italians!

While many of you are no doubt surprised by this treaty, this treaty is undoubtedly for the best. Defending against the Insane Sicilian King is the only way to prevent the destruction of our people and our way of life, and as such must be done.

This treaty mandates the creation of the Italian Peace League, to ensure the continued peace and stability in Italy.
The Italian Peace League charter:

The Italian Peace League concerns the upholding of the peace and stability in the Italian peninsula.

1. Military
All members of the Italian Peace League must work for the continued peace and stability in the Italian peninsula. This means a military alliance that comes into effect should any Italian state declare war upon any other Italian state, or any country holding land in Italy.
The military alliance shall also come into effect should revolutionaries overthrow any of the legitimate Italian governments, in order to re-establish order and the legitimate governments.

2. Diplomatic
The members of the Italian Peace League shall strive to uphold cordial relations with each other.
The members of the Italian Peace League shall also guarantee the independence and sovereignty of the independent Italian states.
Forceful unification of Italian states through diplomatic pressure is declared illegal.

3. Other
The members of the Italian Peace League agree to not annex any territoy in the Italian peninsula that they are not already in possession of. This excludes the re-annexation of previously-lost territory. Territory that can be defined as lost are any territories within the borders set by the Congress of Vienna, and previous losses are invalid.
Any state which is deemed fit to join, is allowed to join the Italian Peace League. Whether or not a state is fit to join the Italian Peace League is determined together by Austria and France.
Austria and France can together agree to expel members of the Italian Peace League that are deemed unfit for it. However, France or Austria alone cannot expel members.
If two states in the Italian peninsula wants to unify peacefully, then that shall be determined on a case-by-case basis.

4. The Kingdom of Two Sicilies
The Kingdom of Two Sicilies in any shape or form shall not be allowed to expand in the Italian peninsula, nor shall it be allowed to unify with any other states, whether by force or peace.

King William mounts the stage in front of thousands of commoners and nobles. People of the Netherlands! Today I echo my plea from a month ago to have the rebel leader stand down. The rebellion has been fully crushed, the cities they command taken by our brave soldiers. Further conflict will only bring more bloodshed, but instead we must fight insurgents and remaining pockets of rebels, all because one man is to cowardly to accept the only possible outcome of his actions. We will search every town, city and manor until we find this self-serving king. Our government asks all citizens loyal to the Crown to report the whereabouts of any rebel leader, and we are also putting a bounty of 100 gold pieces on his head.

I am again offering amnesty to any man willing to lay down his arms, and it would be in his best interest to do so, as any further fighting will raze the fields to the ground, and strip the countryside bare. We do not wish for the destruction of our farms, our lifeblood. Every nation relies on their common person, and we are no exception. On that note, after this rebellion is properly dealt with, the Crown shall be taking steps towards implementing a parliament similar to the British governing system. We need to honor our backbone, which is each and every one of you. King William stepped down from the podium as the seething mass of people burst into a roar of applause, going on for five minutes straight.

The Coronation of Queen Victoria

victoria_coronation_1.jpg

Following the death of King William IV of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland on January 12th, his niece Princess Victoria acceded to the throne. The death of King William IV marked the end of personal union between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and Hanover. The throne of Hanover was acceded by her cousin Ernest Augustus. The coronation was held on June 22th, to much festivities.

In rare show of insight into the life of a monarch, Queen Victoria released here diary entry for the day, revealing how the coronation affected her:

I was awoke at four o'clock by the guns in the Park and could not get much sleep afterwards on account of the noise of the people, bands, etc., etc. Got up at seven, feeling strong and well; the Park presented a curious spectacle, crowds of people up to Constitution Hill, soldiers, bands, etc. I dressed, having taken a little breakfast before I dressed, and a little after. At half-past nine I went into the next room, dressed exactly in my House of Lords costume...

At 10 I got into the State Coach with the Duchess of Sutherland and Lord Albemarle and we began our progress... It was a fine day, and the crowds of people exceeded what I have ever seen; Their good humour and excessive loyalty was beyond everything, and I really cannot say how proud I feel to be the Queen of such a nation.

I was alarmed at times for fear that the people would be crushed and squeezed on account of the tremendous rush and pressure. I reached the Abbey amid deafening cheers at a little after half-past eleven; I first went into a robing room quite close to the entrance where I found my eight train-bearers Lady Caroline Lennox, Lady Adelaide Paget, Lady Mary Talbot, Lady Fanny Cowper, Lady Wilhelmina Stanhope, Lady Anne Fitzwilliam, Lady Mary Grimston, and Lady Louisa Jenkinson, all dressed alike and beautifully in white satin and silver tissue with wreaths of silver corn ears in front, and a small one of pink roses round the plait behind, and pink roses in the trimming of the dresses.

After putting on my mantles and the young ladies having properly got hold of it and Lord Conyngham holding the end of it, I left the robing room and the Procession began… The sight was splendid, the bank of Peeresses quite beautiful all in their robes, and the Peers on the other side. My young trainbearers were always near me, and helped me whenever I wanted anything. The Bishop of Durham stood on the side near me, but he was, as Lord Melbourne told me, remarkably maladroit and never could tell me what was to take place.

At the beginning of the Anthem I retired to St. Edward's Chapel, a small dark place immediately behind the Altar, with my ladies and trainbearers took off my crimson robe and kirtle, and put on the supertunica of cloth of gold, also in the shape of a kirtle, which was put over a singular sort of little gown of linen trimmed with lace; I also took off my circlet of diamonds and then proceeded bareheaded into the Abbey; I was then seated upon St. Edward's chair where the Dalmatic robe was clasped round me by the Lord Great Chamberlain.

Then followed all the various things; and last (of those things) the crown being placed on my head which was I must own a most beautiful impressive moment; all the Peers and Peeresses put on their coronets at the same instant...

The Enthronisation and the Homage of, first, all the Bishops, and then my Uncles, and lastly of all the Peers, in their respective order was very fine.

Poor old Lord Rollo, who is 82 and dreadfully infirm, in attempting to ascend the steps fell and rolled quite down, but was not the least hurt; when he attempted to re-ascend them I got up and advanced to the 'end of the steps, in order to prevent another fall…

I then again descended from the Throne and repaired with all the Peers, bearing the Regalia, my Ladies and Train-bearers, to St. Edward's Chapel. The Procession being formed I replaced my Crown (which I had taken off for a few minutes), took the Orb in my left hand and the Sceptre in my right, and thus loaded, proceeded through the Abbey, which resounded with cheers, to the first robing-room; where I found the Duchess of Gloucester, Mamma, and the Duchess of Cambridge with their ladies. And here we waited for at least an hour, with all my ladies and trainbearers.

The Archbishop had (most awkwardly) put the ring on the wrong finger, and the consequence was that I had the greatest difficulty to take it off again, which I at last did with great pain...

At about half-past four I re-entered my carriage, the Crown on my head and the Sceptre and Orb in my hands, and we proceeded the same way as we came-the crowds if possible having increased. The enthusiasm, affection, and loyalty were really touching, and I shall ever remember this day as the PROUDEST of my life! I came home a little after six, really not feeling tired. At eight we dined...

Stayed in the dining-room till twenty minutes past eleven, but remained on Mamma's balcony looking at the fireworks in Green Park which were quite beautiful…

[Personal union with Hanover dissolved, +50 prestige]

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland would like to express their sorrow to the world for the passing of King William IV.

We would, however, like to thank the Kingdom of Sweden for their gifts to the new Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. As Prime Minister, and head of Her Majesty's Government, we shall pursue all of our older commitments. In doing so, we once again ask for the United States of America to respond to our previous questions we have asked of them.

This has been a message from Her Majesty's Government.

The Kingdom of Prussia

The Kingdom of Prussia joins the United Kingdom in its sorrow over the loss of William IV, a truly great monarch and the worthiest scion of the House of Hanover in his generation. We reiterate the congratulations previously expressed by our son, Friedrich, and our Foreign Minister at Queen Victoria's coronation, regretting only that our royal person has been so occupied by affairs of state that we could not attend ourselves. With our son's presence and our coronation gifts, we hope to both renew and strengthen the ties of friendship between the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of Prussia which have served both of our great nations so well in the past. It is also hoped that our nephew, Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, was met with approval by Her Majesty and served as a source of companionship and comfort during a period of tumultuous change.

Regarding the Kingdom of Greece, though we are saddened by the unfortunate circumstances leading up to this moment, we must acknowledge Greece's great need for a stable and capable monarch to guide its affairs. Therefore, we put forth our youngest son, Albert, as a candidate for the Greek crown. He has expressed to us his abiding respect of the Hellenic people as well as his willingness to convert to Orthodox Christianity and take both a Hellenic wife and a Hellenic name. Should the National Convention prove agreeable, they will find the House of Hohenzollern to be both fruitful and able in leadership.

~ Friedrich Wilhelm III, King of Prussia

The Sardinian King has sold his soul to the Austrians in an attempt to keep his crown. We will relieve him of it shortly. Traitors to Italia will be shown no mercy.

The Austrians and French connive and scheme together to lay further chains upon Italia. The French look covetously on Savoy and Sardinia whilst the Austrians seek to strip more Italian wealth from the northern states. This will not come to pass. We will not fail the Italian people! Rise up and destroy the invaders!

To the Greeks, my brother, Leopold, Count of Siracusa, has signalled his desire to put himself forward as a candidate for the throne of the Hellenic people. He has expressed his utmost love for the Greek culture and it's people. But, he still has ties to Italy. His only caveat is that he be allowed to serve in the Royal Italian Army until the final unification of the Kingdom of Italy. This will allow him to gain valuable military experience to serve Greece in future should he be chosen to become King.

Avanti Italia!

~ Ferdinand I, King of Italy

The Emperor of the Great Qing offers our condolences for the passing of the King of the English, and recognise the accession of his successor, the Queen of the English. We inquire as to whether the Queen of the English shall dispatch a plenipotentiary to the IECC, so we may foster closer links in matters of trade and industry. As of yet, we have received advance notice only from the King of the Dutch. The Emperor of the Great Qing reminds the peripheral nations that attendance is mandatory so as to be party to a patent of commerce that shall be signed at the convention by all attendant princes and the Emperor of the Great Qing. The rewards shall be great, for those willing to demonstrate their loyalty to the Central State.

To the Greek Convention, I announce that my cousin, Christian, Duke of Holstein, and a member of the House of Oldenburg's cadet branch, has made it known to me that he wishes to be a candidate in your election; he is a young man, only 18, but is full of vitality and a sense of duty only the wisest of leaders possess.

I send my greatest condolences to the British nation for the death of their sovereign, William IV, and my greatest congratulation for the ascendancy of their new ruler, Victoria. I will send a number of gifts to celebrate this great occasion, and pray for the Queen's long life and reign.

Regarding my Qing peer's new economic conference, after much consideration with my court, I have decided to allow Đại Nam to be represented on this council, due to our great trade and economic links with the Chinese people. I will send my eldest son and heir, Nguyễn Phúc Miên Tông, to represent myself, and he shall have full authority to negotiate and sign documents in my name. Let him go forward into the diplomatic field, and bring back the Việt a great agreement that will be of assistance to the economic prosperity of the nation.

明命, Ming Mang, Hoàng Đế of Đại Nam

The Mexican president is most saddened by the passing of the British king William IV. He hopes that the new queen Victoria will lead Britain through a new golden age and that good relations. Though we can't send any gifts as all our resources are tied up facing rebels and traitors who are trying to overthrow the rightful Mexican government and replace it with there own corrupt government.

Bah, that fool in Mexico City who calls himself the President is a dirty pig! We are not rebels, we are freedom fighters, fighting for a Mexico no longer oppressed by the Dictatorship of Greedy Capitalists! We shall defeat you and restore stability and greatness to Mexico! People of Mexico, rise up, join me and fight for freedom! Soldiers, rise up, join me and fight for honour!

~Antonio López de Santa Anna, President of Mexico

The Kingdom of Greece

To the Kingdom of Bavaria: The title King of the Hellenes was created because we want a man who is accountable to the Greek people and who will keep their interests in mind. Your prince was an autocrat, an imbecile, and a buffoon, and therefore was deposed.

To the Two Sicilies and Denmark: Leopold, Count of Siracusa and Christian, Duke of Holstein have both been added to the list of candidates for the title of King of the Hellenes.

To the United Kingdom: We mourn the loss of the great King William IV, a great, wise man, and also congratulate Queen Victoria I on her coronation.

To all other interested European parties: I request again that you declare your candidates for the Greek throne! The National Convention will begin debating very soon, and we would like to have a wide variety to choose from if at all possible.

~Andreas Stavridis, Regent-General of the Kingdom of Greece
