Excerpt from a speech given by Patricia Allen to a women's conference in Allentown.
"...and what we have seen is the sidelining of women's issues. That is why we need a woman in the Senate. We need someone who will protect a woman's right to choose, who will fight for equal pay, and who will fight against sexual harassment in the workplace and sexual assault. I think the hearings for Clarence Thomas, and especially those of Anita Hill and the other women who accused him of sexual harassment have made the latter especially important right now. How many of you have experienced sexual harassment or know someone who has? It's something that should not be easily dismissed, especially when it comes to nominating a Supreme Court justice and I'll tell you right now that if I was in the Senate I would have voted against the nomination of Clarence Thomas because of this. That is why we need legislation to make it easier for women to sue if they feel like they're being sexually harassed by co-workers because we need to protect women in the workplace.
Now, I don't know where State Senator Barnett stands on this issue. I know that Senator Specter showed no sympathy for Ms. Hill during the hearings and did not ask her any questions about her allegations of sexual harassment. Neither did President Bush, who did not withdraw Clarence Thomas' nomination even after these allegations came to light. I think it is worrying that Republicans would take such an issue lightly because it is pretty serious. But I'll leave it up to you decide where State Senator Barnett stands on this issue, even if the examples being set by his party are concerning and should be concerning for every woman in Pennsylvania."
