The new elder of the Cuallitechichic clan added his voice to the debate.

"A fight is an honorable way to resolve this. We need to be sure we are led by the best, and when the trials have failed to make that clear, more direct competition is needed. Fear of death in such a test is craven talk. It is not even a battle to the death, and if a combatant has been bested he may yield. Even if by the unlikely event death visits the duel, then the one he takes would be honoured, not mourned. Death in the service of our great People and for the holy purpose of deciding our leadership is surely smiled upon by the gods."

We find the outrageous claims by the Tlanextic most insulting to our clan. Tonauac believes we would be stupid enough to strike against an obvious target and leave evidence behind. If we were to We have nothing to do with your clan, and considering these insults, it is likely this will remain so. However, we are always open to discussion, and thus welcome Tonauac to talk.

Ceccuauhtli was looking at the other leaders of the clans as they made their decision on what to do about this tie the trials have come to. An honorable duel was the decision most of the clans agreed to, although Quixpix seemed opposed to the idea of risking his life. Ceccuauhtli voiced his opinion on the matter when the other clans seemed to have nothing else to say.

"If the other clans wish for this tie to be broken in an honorable duel, I am not opposed to the idea at all. I will, however, be open to the idea that if one of us sees the futility of continuing the duel any further at any point during it, the other will respect their decision and back off as well as be declared the victor. In fact, if you see the futility of this duel right now, you can simply concede and not risk your life."

"A duel of strength isn't the best solution.Having a stronger leader is better but having a more intelligent leader is even better.Intelligency is the most important quality of a ruler. Both have showed us they are intelligent by passing our tests, but we should find the most intelligent one.So I propose to use my boardgame trial. They already know the rules. This time they won't play against me,but they will play against each other. There will be 3 games played.Whoever wins 2 games, becomes the Tlatoani.I think this would be a good decision because that doesn't cause our most worthy people kill each other, and still get a result."

((Alright, I've resolved the duel))

In order to break the tie, most of the chiefs agreed that the bet solution would be a simple duel. Quixpix disagreed, arguing that it was a waste of life, but eventually he gave in and accepted the duel. So, without further ado, weapons were brought to the two contenders, and the chiefs climbed down the tumulus.

The duel itself was rather short - with the first strike, Quixpix disarmed his opponent. Perplexed by the strength of the blow, and not knowing what to do, Ceccuauhtli took a few steps backward and stumbled over a rock. He fell backwards and tumbled down the hill, breaking his neck on the way down. The small, but deadly rock was henceforth known as Ceccuauhmictiqui, Snow Eagle's Bane.

After a few minutes of worried silence and confusion among the assembled people, the chiefs once again climbed the Hill of Acaluaccaquixti and raised the arm of Quixpix of the Maximoh, the second Tlatoani of Atlauhtipan.

((summary of Atlauhtipan religio - can also be found in the second post of this thread ))

Lore: Religion
The people of Atlauhtipan worship a large number of different gods. Several clans have their own sets of gods, but while they may not all worship the same gods, they generally accept the existence of other clans' gods.

The most widely worshipped gods are those known as the Yolotli gods, perhaps because clan Yolotli are the most staunch followers of this pantheon.
Gods of Clan Yolotli

The religious beliefs of the Tonatepotztocah and Tlanextic are almost identical to those of the Yolotli Clan, albeit with a few distinctions:
Differences between the beliefs of the Tonatepotztocah and Yolotli Clans
Differences between the beliefs of the Tlanextic and Yolotli Clans

The Cecuecacayotin migrated to Atlauhtipan many years ago, and thus have a distinct pantheon, although with some borrowing from other clans:

The Maximoh, or Maximus Familias, migrated to Atlauhtipan from a tribe living across the Smoking Sea, and thus they also have a distinct set of gods:

Matzatl had chosen to bury Ceccuauhtli by Ceccuauhmictiqui, the rock which had killed him. Ceccuauhtli was buried with a spare set of clothes, his weapon that was knocked away during the duel, and a couple of potatoes. Ceccuauhmictiqui was then marked with the symbol of of the Cecuecacayotin, a hollow hexagon with a set of lines shaped like a Y extending from each corner (a crude snowflake). The clan then spent the next few days mourning the sudden loss of Ceccuauhtli. On the second day, Matzatl was feeling more composed than he had been, although he still was grieving. Matzatl would make a suggestion to the other leaders based on his observations about the first duel of the tribe.

"In the future, we should have our duels on flat ground that we have cleared out. An honorable duel should not have one side gain a distinct advantage over the other for any reason other than skill with a weapon."

((Oh Clan Cecuecacayotin, always somehow bungling the trials so far. I'm just sitting here, clapping, as I rolled a 1, got a critical failure, and succumbed due to a lack of OSHA compliance. Meanwhile, Ironhide got something besides a 1. I even said to myself, "Hey, I have a decent shot at this!" Looks like I jinxed myself. I expect that Clan Cecuecacayotin in the trials will soon be some kind of cruel joke.))

While everybody else was down, Quixpix looked downcast. Those near him could hear him saying, "I just killed another human being..."

In the early years of the reign of Quixpix, the clans of Atlaticquipiltzmeh, who owned a large part of the lands around Atlauhtipan as well as the Hill of Acaluaccaquixti itself, and Coaxoch, which held bountiful lands in both Camotlalpan and Zacatla, had both gone extinct. This was rather surprising in the case of Coaxoch, due to its access of large amounts of food, but due to a sequence of lethal accidents and their children dying from diseases, their family had slowly decreased in size, and now the last person of their bloodline had died.

What were to be done with their lands and possessions?

(I had a very busy weekend, but will have time to play tomorrow. In the mean time you can find a solution for this problem.)

Tonauac of Clan Tlanextic spoke his mind on the issue.

It is impossible to determine a single inheritor, or even unevenly split, of the land among the clans. Therefore, it should go to the government, who may award it to struggling clans or keep it for its own uses. This would allow the Tlatoani to accomplish something without creating an imbalance by granting one clan too much land, and therefore too much power.

We respectfully completly disagree. Meanwhile we could agree with that statement about the lands in the main clan area (capital tile) the lands in the land of the potato and the stlled hill should be given to the clans that currently shared the areas with the extinc clans. It sadened us greatly to seee our friends died, and we did everything we could to help them and feed them as their people died one by one. Furthermore we know the land better than anyone as well the trade practiced on it and lastly many of our people married between each other as we were close as such we believe our and our neighbor clan (galren) should hold that land

It saddens me to see that one of our brethren clans would seek to improve their own power and influence over the good of the entire Altepetl.

Mixpiltzin agrees with Tonauac, to let one single clan inherit the lands as proposed before us in utter nonsense.

Matzatl looked quite worried. He knew that this argument over the Coaxoch's lands would force the Cecuecacayotin ((Galren)) to take one side and alienate another. Even so, he had to make a stand, as he had as much claim to some of the land as the neighboring Xiuhcoatl ((Alex)).

"I believe the other clans are forgetting that the Xiuhcoatl are suggesting that the Cecuecacayotin as well as they shall inherit the Coaxoch lands. This makes two clans that inherit the lands, not one, thus distributing the resources more evenly."

What the representative of clan Cecuecacayotin says its correct. Note i did not discuss the lands of the Atlaticquipiltzpeople.meh as we belive it is correct other clans divide it or pass fully to the people.

The point remains. As I said earlier, even an uneven distribution of the land is dangerous to us all. It is time to assign some trust and control to a central Tlatoani, so that we do not end up fighting over just such a thing as this.

Xipil stood up, "What is this talk? To give these lands to the haves when there are still the have nots or to give these lands to the Tlatoani while there are still clans who must live in the forests? Clan Yolotli claims the lands in the capital and is willing to rescind all rights to any land we previously held. Our people cannot live like we have. We deserve this land. The Hill of Acaluaccaquixti is important to our religion as it is on this hill where Aamitinemi and Ayahuitlitzon first sprung from and where they first instructed man. Such a holy place should be protected by the most devout and none follow the gods and spirits as closely as we do. As for the rest of the lands, I'm willing to allow Xiuhcoatl and Cecuecacayotin to inherit the lands in the Camotlalpan and Zacatla."
