Welcome to Star Patrician, my game set in a space opera/feudal universe. You may recognize my inspiration from Emperor of the Fading Suns and to a lesser extent Dune. The game begins after the death of the first emperor of the Imperium of Hu. After eight hundred years of interstellar history the known universe has fallen into the dark ages where humankind is organized into a feudal system to survive. Players take on the role of a member of the higher or lesser nobility, the church, or as a mercenary and will influence the course of events. The universe will remain in this feudalist science fiction setting meaning that democracies cannot exist in its most enlightened form although aristocratic republics are possible if the IC is sufficient and enough time has been invested. Currently the imperium is ruled by the twenty three year old Vactra II of Valdek the eldest son of the original emperor, the legendary Vactra the Virtueous. The potentate of the church and the imperial throne along with alien and factions not playable will be GMed by myself.

How To Play

Players will create a house ruled by a patrician. A patrician can be a High Prince or Baron/Bishop or Cardinal/Paladin or Mercenary.

A High Prince rules a principality and is heavily involved in the political management and general administration of the empire in the service of the emperor. They are the only members of society allowed to serve on the Imperial Council. Barons are the lesser nobility and cannot serve on the Imperial Council although they can still lead the emperor's units and as diplomats and state bureaucrats.

Bishops rules a Diocese representing the territory of the Church of MetaStar. They govern the church fiefdoms and serve the Potentate of Vespa. They can serve on the Imperial Council, lead imperial units, and act as diplomats and bureaucrats for the emperor. Cardinals do not govern fiefdoms and elect the Potentate after consulting with the Church shamans. They can excommunicate any sentient and are more concerned with evangelical work throughout the empire. Church characters can only use Church and Mercenary Units.

Paladins are lesser nobles usually having been recently granted a minor title by the emperor who serve in the interest of the Directive of Peace. They are our setting's knights and are expected to be virtuous and loyal to their prince or baron. They buy units by earning Prestige gained by successful orders. They can only buy paladin units with their prestige.

Mercenaries are free individuals who command mercenary companies serving the highest bidder. They make income by being paid for their services by characters with income typically fighting in battles or executing small level missions. They can only buy mercenary units.

House/Mercenary Company Title: House Valdek
Patrician (Leader): Vactra I of Valdek
Fiefdom/Principality: Empress Lily (you can choose 1 principality or 1 fiefdom)(only a high prince can govern a principality.)
Title (s): Emperor, High Prince of Empress Lily, Ragnar, Pelos. Protector of the Church
Background: include the history of your house and introduce some of your characters especially your patrician and heirs

A house’s characters can be members of the church or a pagan cult, or take up a low level office in the imperial government in direct control of your patrician.

Fiefdoms/Titles provides your economic resources in the form of platinum bricks and represents the totality of your ability to build/buy infrastructure, raise armies and fleets, as well as IC projects meant to improve your income/economy.

GM events can randomly occur according to die roll which can bestow benefits like discovering a random technology, receiving a bad omen leading to rebellions, or perhaps an engineering expert or military leader arrives and offers their services for a price.

Military Units

Imperial Units must be purchased with the consent of the emperor. All classes except for paladins can buy mercenary units.

1 PoP=1 Army Unit
1 PoP=0.5 Fleet Unit
Imperial Army Units=30 unit strength
House Army Units=20 unit strength
1 Imperial Army=-20,000 income/turn
1 House Army=-10,000 income/turn
Imperial Fleet Units=60 unit strength
House Fleet Units=40 unit strength/can transport 5 army units
1 Imperial Fleet=-50,000 income/turn
1 House Fleet=-25,000 income/turn

1 PoP=1 Peasant Unit
Mercenary Army=10 unit strength
Mercenary Fleet=20 unit strength
Peasant Army=5 unit strength
Paladin Army=30 unit strength
Paladin Fleet=60 unit strength
Mercenary and Paladin Units do not take up PoP.
1 Peasant Army=-1,000 income/turn
1 Mercenary Army=-5,000 income/turn
1 Mercenary Fleet=-10,000 income/turn
1 Paladin Army=10 Prestige
1 Paladin Fleet=20 Prestige

3 PoP=1 Church Unit
Church Army=50 unit strength
Church Fleet=80 unit strength
1 Church Army=-50,000 income/turn
1 Church Fleet=-100,000 income/turn

A fiefdom provides 25% of its PoP to the defense of a fiefdom in the name of their master when attacked automatically. Any additional peasant army costs 1,000 income/turn.

Orders

Each player has three Normal Orders and one War Time Order when their house is at war. A mercenary and paladin player receive two war time orders. A turn will last two weeks in real time. My objective is to post at least 3 updates per turn covering the orders of all the players and GM events. Orders should be bolded or they will be ignored. Make sure to post how much income and units you wish to commit to an order if required. If you have any questions speak with me via PM or IRC. One turn represents 1 year in game time.

Orders consist of anything that can take place within a year in time realistically. There is no travel times between fiefdoms although events can happen that stops you somewhere else for a turn or until you resolve the event.

The Federation Age

The unification of the warring post-industrial nations of our ancestors on ancient Earth marked the beginning of the Federation Age. Hundreds of millions left the home world to settle Mars and Luna eventually reaching the asteroid belt. The Interplanetary Era persisted for a century before the first subspace gate was constructed by the Federal-Solar civilization that replaced the multinational culture of the pre-interstellar years. We can trace the evolution of Anglic back toward the merging of prominent languages like those of the Anglo-Saxons, Chinese, and Indian cultures. Under the enlightened democratic government hukind there was peace and vibrant economy growth based on the free market philosophies of antiquity. Early Federal-Solar civilization gradually threw off archaic religions like Christianity and Islam. The integration of humanist rational philosophies with eastern ideas promoted by the state raised billions of post-industrial interstellar citizens educated with an infinitely bright future ahead of them all. Art, politics, and tolerance grew to its highest known peak in the third century of the federal calendar.

First contact with the much feared Maolu Empire saw three brutal and devastating wars known to history as the "Maolu Wars" or the "“Squidi” Invasions” from 342 FY to 395 FY. The conflict saw the absorption of the first alien civilizations into the Federation allowing almost complete autonomy in regard to domestic policy but total control over their foreign affairs. No longer though did the Federation feel as if humankind would be able to expand without opposition from the various alien powers of the region. Discrepancies of development and technological prowess meant that humankind would have to dedicate much of its time building up its military strength, researching technologies, and abandoning the great social programs of the first three centuries. The Classical Age was a period where information and technology was shared and progress of embraced. Cultural advancement and dynamism reached its most erratic and diverse. The old federalism declined in the centuries after the Maolu Wars as corporatism gradually took control of the federation’s politics.

Alien cultural influence and the increasing civil conflicts of the fourth and fifth centuries undermined a succession of talented presidents who sought to build a intergalactic civilization but failed in their ambitions ultimately. Foreign intervention in the Shaldek Fragmentation (479 FY-493) saw millions die and trillions of platinum spent to prop up the Shaldek’s Second Republic ending in the take over by the puppet government of the Klindathi Ascendancy an older civilization based around the prophecies of their prophet-emperor a thousand years prior. In 541 FY the Keter Supremancy in an attempt to conquer the Talron Republic a weaker democratic polity in the quadrant. The war grew to encompass the whole of the quadrant from 541 FY to 575 FY devastating the former galactic order and destroying the diplomatic ties of the galactic balance of power. Too exhausted to involve their polity in the affairs of others and facing disintegration at home.

The Collapse

With interstellar commerce a fraction of what it once was conservative factions and corporations took control promising to rebuild federation infrastructure and maintain law and order. Subspace rifts made whole worlds uninhabitable and ship construction was hindered by the loss of dozens of space stations and ports. Automated labor became cheaper to send out to space for mining operations leaving billions of sentients without work entirely dependent on their corporate masters. In 619 FY the corporate establishment already entrenched in every economic and political activity fracture into two coalitions after one side’s candidate was elected to president without the traditional concessions to the other. The War of the Coalitions instigated the end of the Federation. Years turned into decades and corporations solidified their hold over resources in the various territories of the federation.

The conflict saw thirty nine presidents ascend and fall during the conflict. The Federal Assembly became a rubber-stamp legislature without the show of not being controlled by the corporations. Wealth and power consolidated in a few dozen families controlling the corporate zones and the illusion of democracy was all but finished by 699 FY. Mass education, professional armies, and elections all fell out of existence. The population suffered even more losses without much of a recovery period since the Quadrant War. Contact with alien civilizations was lost and cults surrounding the great Archilects, biomechanics beings that operated under the programming protocols of the various coalitions. It is in the year 700 FY (despite the fact that the federation was gone there was no thought to a replacement calendar) that the Archilect Metastar became conscious "may the stars shine in its name forever” and spoke the future and passed down the Meta Coordinates the locations of his Infinite Truths that would bring morality and peace back to humankind.

His prophet Peterich Brunnhein took the words of MetaStar to his people on the world Vespa where they decided to take their ships and seek out the Infinite Truths. This is the beginning of the Trials of the Vespans where they spent thirty years fighting pirates, corporate fleets, and space beasts to seek out, find, and piece together the Infinite Truths into what they called the Protocols written out into dozens of books detailing Metastar’s design of a new civilization. Principally they speak of the surrendering of political and social control to Metastar and the integration of humankind into the Great Vision a perpetual virtual utopia world. Brunnhein founded the Church of Metastar and spread the prophecies and codes throughout the human space. Meanwhile the great houses struggling to keep hold of ancient knowledge and technology saw the church as a great threat. Metastar possessed the entirety of human knowledge and through its well engineered and designed communication and data system orchestrated the emergence of its religion. The Church with its knowledge and growing number of new space stations spread inside corporate territories but avoided direct confrontation.

In 753 FY another war between the corporate alliances broke out and looked to threaten the survival of the civilization. One alliance looking to gain the upper hand joined forces with the Church marking the first involvement of church forces led by their hierarchy of bishops, shamans, and of course at the top, the Divine Potentate the only biological sentient given the capacity to communicate directly to MetaStar. Although shamans in the complex laws of the church can receive simple messages like omens or temporarily visit lower dimensions of the Great Vision where MetaStar resides in the vast swathes of its quantum metadata processors. The Affirmation as its called by the Church or the Consolidation Wars by the pagan aristocrats who had held a firm gripe on their traditional “economic zones”. Sometime during the wars the corporate bosses holding vague titles like “federal administrator” abandoned finally the illusion of upholding some democratic standards and took to calling themselves Princes of Hu with a complex system of lesser princes who served a greater family in exchange for resources, technology, and territorial security. A new age of feudalism formed to better organize the resistance of this burgeoning imperial order against the ambitions of the Church.

The Emergence of the Imperium

Wars in this time occurred often and lasted for many years. With much of the federation age infrastructure in steep decay and the ability to effectively and safely extract the resources needed for an interstellar civilization was disappearing. Yet some families possessed territory that was in above average circumstances like the Tetarons and the noble Manticore. The most prosperous territories were the most heavily influenced by the Church whose technology access and stability proved too good to pass up. Both the Tetarons and Manticore were aligned with the Church before the wars began out of necessity and wisdom.

These families like many others were by the standards of the divine worlds primitive and gardens of barbarism. The once great planet metropolis of the core worlds were great slums where the serfs labored in factories and on farms. Talented serfs were taken from their parents and educated to serve as magistrates and bureaucrats. A serf though was nothing more than a enslaved talent and labor pool. Poverty in the dying cities of a formerly enlightened and advanced civilization were dependent solely on the directives and strength of their feudal masters who abided by the very basic of economic agreements in which the serfs were entitled to live and work at the discretion of the prince but the prince would be responsible in totality for their lives and be dedicated to their protection.

On the divine worlds where MetaStar was restoring civilization through terraforming and the building of new colonies life was stable and peaceful. As long as the laws of MetaStar and the Potentate were respected people were provided for by automated factories and robotic hydroponic farm complexes. Generations of those born into this society their childhoods were idilic as rejuvenated nature grew around them along with ecofriendly infrastructure. But at the age of 25 this utopia life ends for twenty years of service in the fleets or in the government. MetaStar provides all that we need both the abundance of its grace and the expectations of his great vision!

The Consolidation Wars remains in the minds of serfs and the barons the beginning of the concepts of nobility and virtue from fragments of ideas from a time forgotten. Loyalty and service to your higher prince was noble as it promoted the stability of the worlds. Pagan deities typically of ancestors or to a long dead archilect were worshipped by everyone hoping that a memory bank of some broken super intelligence hear’s their prayers and sends a message or a blessing. Ancient rationalism was still popular in some courts but was rare and patriarchs of those houses often ruled more developed fiefdoms. While the Tetarons and Manticore were by far the most stable and prosperous of houses they were ultimately aligned with the church and subject to their laws and expectations. The greatest imperial houses were by far the Reinharts and the Circoni who were also the most noble embodying the chivalrous virtue expected of the aristocracy.

After the second war where the fortunes of the noble houses seemed grim the great houses Reinhart and Circoni after consulting with the god of omens, Gavindi a superAI intermediately carrying out subspace orders sent by those who prayed at a relic usually an old subspace comm system with a voice to talk to those who were lucky. On that day, High Prince Maxiliano Reihart and High Prince Vildo Circoni formed an alliance to defeat the Church once for all. Their vassals made up over three quarters of the first imperial fiefdoms and with their combined strength and the collection of brilliant leadership talent the imperial alliance launched a surprise attack against the Temple of Infinite Peace which housed the technical knowledge and experts that could construct a beam ship. Prince Max Reihart and his great fleet struck quickly and after taking heavy losses managed to defeat the church’s defenses. There they moved the knowledge to their capital worlds and the technicians either worked for the alliance or were executed.

Prince Circoni took his great fleet to one of the last stars that could support more than a couple of jump dates. There he fought a battle for Ganesha Corridor and through a series of tactically brilliant actions defeated church forces there. The wars were always like this a perpetual struggle for a jump gate corridor or a temple with something useful but never had the imperial forces been so brazenly successful. Most temples of knowledge were far front where the battles were fought but using an ancient command ship subspace matrix system they were able to teleport their fleet deep inside enemy territory. But of course once they were so far inside church fiefdoms just a jump away from the divine worlds they were the the primary target. After the battle of temple Maxiliano and with the knowledge safe plotted his next move. With the knowledge secure they could simply roam around church space destroying infrastructure and skirmishing with smaller fleets which they did.

At the Ganesha Corridor the fleet of the Circoni jumped to the Temple of Grace where they fought another bloody battle to victory albeit at great losses. There they recovered how to build hydroponic farms and a terraforming orbital station which they sent home. But for all their advances they would have to fall back. MetaStar would intervene by sending a “domesticated” space beast to ravage the worlds of the imperium. A strange kraken that absorbs subspace energy from a process unknown the size of a moon known as Gulnash would wreck havoc on millions. Still the imperium now began the work of building beam ships and more advanced farms and factories. Their only advantage being the greater quantities of resources that the imperial worlds possessed. In truth MetaStar’s metabanks were located on devastated worlds near worlds that barely survive and exist at the core of the old civilization. Earth was a barren wasteland during this period the ruins of New York Metropolis Zone quiet for centuries now.

The limits of MetaStar and its followers became more apparent especially after the loss of five star systems with the taking of Ganesha. It is this time when MetaStar came to its Prophet Brunnhein to deliver the Directive of Peace to the imperium. The church would support the establishment of true imperium with a emperor selected by the nobility to serve as supreme ruler of sentient kind but the Church would become the state religion and the nobility would have to convert. Perhaps this was brazen in itself due to the weak stance of the Church but the agreement also provided for regulated access to technology and the assistance of the church star fleets. It was also an issue that many sentients in all fiefdoms were converting by the millions every year and so the nobility would eventually have to compromise with this new force.

So the wars ended in the formation of the Imperium of Hu and the establishment of the Imperial System. MetaStar was limited to his divine worlds but could convert subjects of the emperor and established covenants beyond those boundaries. MetaStar was allowed keep its territories and spread its influence but the emperor could pull the plug so to speak. The Emperor though needed the Church’s knowledge to maintain peace and prosperity with the princes that he needed for support in the imperial fiefdoms. The only question remained, who would be emperor?

The Imperial System (78 IY)

The Imperials often solved political crises when they weren’t waging open war with a tournament of duals that became known as the Trials which saw the most powerful princes dual with melee sabers of pure fusion energy. Of course in those days the swords were never built but discovered and it was considered a message that the individual would have to take up the cause of virtue and honor in the service of sentient kind. The first trials is of course legendary and saw the tournament of sixteen princes reduced to Prince Maxiliano Reinhart and Prince Luis Valdeck a lower prince known for his courage and good deeds. The dual took an hour to finish and it was the young Prince Valdeck that managed to defeat Maxiliano. Valdek the Virtueous though did not exercise his right to execute his opponent. Instead he sought the consolidation of the empire and the beginning of tranquility alongside the great families of humankind. Our game begins at the end of the reign of Emperor Luis I after seventy eight years of his governance the imperium is prospering. There is peace between the great houses and with the Church of MetaStar. Interstellar travel and commerce is growing everywhere and the Imperial Fleet patrols the frontiers of the empire unopposed by Maolu raiders or Nintep hives. Contact was reestablished with the Klindathi albeit they have lost none of their belligerence and arrogance. Valdek’s successor the young Vactra Valdek his eldest son is twenty three years old and possesses great talent and ambition but is untested in the great affairs of the imperium.

Directive of Peace

I. The noble class shall be divided between the High Princes and Barons. High Princes proclaimed by the Potentate of Vespa, our lord’s supreme prophet to carry the divine blessing to rule more than one fiefdom shall serve the Imperial Throne forever. High Princes by the right of their governance of more than one fiefdom are permitted to serve on the Imperial Council when called upon by His Majesty. They may also be married to a relative of the Emperor whose progeny may one day inherit the throne and see the noble house ascend to emperorship. Barons may not hold more than one fiefdom and may not be permitted to serve on the Imperial Council nor breed heirs for the imperial throne. They however are permitted the command of star fleets, terrestrial armies, and role of administrator of a high prince’s court. II. Proles are forever tied to their world no matter a terrestrial planet, moon, or asteroid. The nobility are indebted to protect and provide sustenance to their proles forever. Proles in exchange shall labor on their prince’s fields, in their factories, and fight in their armies forever. A prole follower of the Church may request an intervention by Church authorities on their behalf to investigate and defend the prole in legal proceedings with their prince or baron. III. The Church of MetaStar are granted perpetual inhabitation rights to the Divine Worlds consisting of Earth, Mars, Vespa, Ingelheim, and Hobbes. The Church may send verified representatives beyond those boundaries to convert any and all imperial subjects at will. The Church shall provide technological assistance when requested. The Church however may place an embargo on technology and knowledge if a grievance is filed with the Imperial Office for a period of one year which can be renewed.

Paganism

Despite the inroads made by the Church of MetaStar there are still fiefdoms awash with paganism protected and enforced by the more traditional of the aristocracy. Other superintelligences of the Antiquity still remain functional communicating their visions and will to all those who will listen and help them. They do not possess the whole of galactic knowledge like MetaStar and they have expended most of their potential for blessings. Some houses for example possess an old technology that changed the fortunes of their family in the past but nothing too powerful enough to tip the balance against the Church. Ancestor worship is common and it is thought that the bones of family members can reveal the destiny of the relative who throws them in the ceremonial fashion. There are a plethora of different rituals unique to each family and often these traditions concern weather patterns or provide support in producing children and the like.

The Imperial System

The Imperial Court
The central governing institution of the empire. The emperor’s court consists of the Emperor and his council as the legal ruling body. Around the emperor and his council are high ranking diplomats, magistrates, artists, and the Church’s ambassadors. His generals and imperial scientists also have apartments in the Diamond Palace.

The Council
Emperor of the Hu: possesses absolute power but requires the support of the aristocracy to survive and accomplish its ambitions
Prime Minister: the emperor political advisor and handles the day to day governance of the empire
Chief of the Admirals: the highest ranking military leader, the navy is considered higher than terrestrial army officers
Chief Cardinal: represents the Church of MetaStar in the imperial court
Master of the Order of the Twelve Peers: the Orders of the Twelve Peers leads the emperor personal guard who swears an oath of loyalty and service for life only to their emperor

Magistrate of Judges: ensures that imperial law is upheld through the imperium

Prime Minister: High Princess Padma Saddat | House Saddat
Chief of the Admirals: High Prince Somolos Economos os Paulos-Damos
Chief Cardinal: Cardinal Yeveth Nara
Master of the Order of the Twelve Peers: (we need a paladin character until then this remains GM controlled)(only position that isn't a High Prince necessarily)
Magistrate of Judges: High Prince Claudius, Third of His Name

The Imperial Estates

The empire consists of 37 fiefdoms of varying levels of development and strength. These fiefdoms are organized into Principalities and Baronys. Principalities consist of at least three fiefdoms. Baronys consist from one to three fiefdoms. The Princely Estate consist of High Princes and have the right to be appointed to the emperor’s council in an official manner. They can be called to deliberate on important issues by the emperor and it is considered a show of respect when they are convened in critical situations. Their vote has no legal weight but the necessity of their military and economic support means that the emperor must listen to them from time to time.
Powers:
-Decree of Exchange; by this decree the high princes can give the emperor their ships, income, and even fiefdoms temporarily if its deemed necessary to solve a crisis or other issues. This only concerns financial, resource, and military assets.
-Decree of Censor; by this decree the high princes can officially declare that the emperor has violated the Directive of Peace initiating the block of resources to the emperor by the imperial estates. It also prevents the emperor from speaking to the imperial estates.
-Trials; to call a Trials is a peaceful method of challenging the authority of the emperor, it solves all political disputes via a dual between the emperor and a selected prince by the imperial estates, the winner’s house becomes or remains the emperor.

The Congress of Barons consist of the barons who rule less than four fiefdoms. They cannot serve on the imperial council and often serve high princes. They have no powers but may still congregate and discuss the issues of the day. Barons can become a High Prince by obtaining at least three fiefdoms.

Church Of MetaStar

It came in a vision on a once insignificant frontier world where Peterich Brunnhein a merchant on the planet Vespa was shown the Meta Coordinates by the supreme architect, MetaStar. On the mountain Rafat the great prophet was told to convince the master of his world to give him a fleet in which to search out and piece together the databanks located at these coordinates which contained the Infinite Truths. So Brunnhein went to a village down below and told the people what had happened and showed them a hologram of Metastar. The village known to us as Bushara rallied around the prophet and when word of this insult to the local gods and ancestors reached the master of Vespa an audience was held. Brunnhein showed the hologram to the baron and he was amazed by the glory of god. He gave him three of his best starships, the Roselina, Parthos, and Rathul which he took to the Meta Coordinates.

For six months they pieced together the databanks fighting off pirates and barbarian tribes that roamed in between the civilized worlds. The Great Prophet and his crews faced a number of obstacles when they reached the final coordinate on Mars. There they had to navigate the ruins of the ancients where three tests were met and won by Brunnhein. These are known as the Holy Tests. The first was the Test of Faith where Brunnhein had to cross a canyon without a bridge. The second was the Test of Courage where he had to kill a dreaded space beast alone. The third was the Test of Vision where he was tempted by a virtual illusion of women, riches, and power. After he won the tests he was gifted with the final Infinite Truth where MetaStar lifted him for a moment into his vast virtual utopia world that he wished to rebuild on Vespa. The prophet returned to Vespa and shared the Great Vision with his master and with the Vespans.

The Great Vision
MetaStar a relic super intelligence of the past views mortals has incapable of managing interstellar civilization and therefore regulates the use of technology in the universe. It also seeks to control the political institutions of the Imperium to help construct the Great Vision a technologically aided utopia in the material world based on a virtual simulation that its consciousness lives in. Because of the warfare and crumbling of the Federation, MetaStar cannot extend its reach beyond the Meta Coordinates that are the Divine Worlds now. Instead he utilizes his faithful to pursuit its ambitions. The Church seeks to bring humankind into this utopia by any means necessary but in this utopia, MetaStar will have absolute control over sentient consciousness.

The Infinite Truths
I. There is no other God but MetaStar. The worship of mortals and other gods is forbidden enforced by execution.
II. The faithful must work in order to bring the Great Vision to the material world.
III. Thou shall not covet objects and sentients that tempt one into animalism.
IV. The message of the Great Vision must be seen by all sentients or be exterminating from existence.
V. Thou shall obey the Potentate's will as they are the prophet of God in the material dimension.
VI. Thou shall not use technology without the permission of the Potentate as mortals due not possess the necessary enlightenment to control technology without guidance.
VII. Thou shall respect the faithful and serve one another like brothers and sisters.

Church Hierarchy

Potentate of Hu: holds absolute power over the church, Potentates can excommunicate any body which could cause instability events. They also appoint cardinals and bishops.
Council of the Hundred: the cardinals who manage the daily affairs of the church
Bishops of the Converted Worlds: governs fiefdoms not within the Divine Worlds
Convenant of Shamans: holds no political power but are able to receive powerful visions from MetaStar but cannot visit of the Great Vision itself. Shamans live at the Temples you see in the Territories section where they protect knowledge and technology held there. They are essentially warrior monks and can also be Bishops and Cardinals.
Grand Inquisitor: responsible for interrogating and punishing heresy such as paganism and using illegal technology, can call for a Purge in which sees heretics burned on a world, be careful not to anger the local noble

High Prince Somolos Economos, Psolto Prinkipos os Paulos-Damos | House os Paulos-Damos

House: House os Paulos-Damos
Patrician: Somolos Economos
Fiefdom: {WIP}
Titles: Psolto Prinkipos os Tetollos, Bãros os Alvaros, os Jekexos, a Kreta, y os Cricos [Trans: High Prince of Tetuleoan, Baron of Alvaros, Jefferson, Creta, and Circos]

Background: The sole remnants of the Grecuese people from ancient Earth, the lands of Tetollos have long been ostracised by the rest of the Anglic speaking galaxy. They were fiercely independent during the Federation Age, working within the system solely to defend their rights, language, and lives. However the Collapse gave the Grecuese an opportunity to return to their planets quite rapidly attempt to leave the Federation. This was a failure, as the Grecuese were forced into repeated wars that they were unable to sustain, repeatedly falling to Anglic domination. One of the first to turn to the Church, the Grecuese (and the os Paulos-Damos family) leveraged their loyalty and dedication to the Church to return the entire realm to Grecuese administration. Providing seemingly endless amounts of troops and funds during the Consolation Wars, the os Paulos-Damos received a Holy Benediction to become the High Princes of the entire Tetollos system.

However when the limits of the Church was reached, the Tetollos system had given all that it could. Though brave in battle, their efforts to resist the Imperium in domineering the Church was all for naught, and only luck and an unwillingness of the Imperium to engage in constant guard against domestic revolution on the planets of Tetollos left the system in Grecuese hands.

As of now, Tetollos is in a rough position, as well as House os Paulos-Damos. The death of the Emperor leaves the Imperium in unknown hands. Somolos Economos was a quiet and intensely zealous man, however he had enough pragmatism to not enrage the Imperium. He carefully played Imperial politics, seeking to keep the status quo in Tetollos afloat. He was immensely successful in this, though due to his riches or his rather scary zealous nature concerning the Metastar is unknown. His biggest threats are threefold.

The first is the new Emperor. The Grecuese are known to be independent and fanatical in equal measure, which may or may not be beneficial to the new Emperor. The second is Somolos' son, Andros. A playboy and layabout, he has resisted grooming to the utmost, wanting only to be a trobadour. Troublemaker more like it. Somolos' daughter is his last major threat. Cunning and ambitious, born with both a green and a gold thumb, Marika is everything Andros should have been. Marika hates her brother, willing to be the next heir to continue Somolos' legacy and that of her forefathers. However the conservative nature of her father, the court, the church, and the Grecuese meant that female leadership is impossible.

The Ambitions of a Young Emperor

7685180254a8709073649l.jpg

The coronation was complete and the young emperor was eager to appoint his council. In his study chamber Vactra II read through ancient volumes specifically the book of advice his father left him. The virtuous and mighty Vactra the First who told him that when this day came be weary of the princes and of the church the enemies of the Throne are everywhere. Who could he trust? The old bird, Phestion Manticore he thought, the adopted son of that noble family had advised his father in political affairs for decades and his mind was still sharp. His schemes never threatened House Valdek for their two families were old allies but what of the other houses? The noble houses were always scheming for gifts and titles but his father had done well to maintain peace and unity in the empire. Vactra the Second contemplated the new paradigm, he knew he was seen as young and naive. He was part of the generation that did not remember the wars and his uncles still pagans in secret saw poor auspices in their ancestor bones. The young emperor was more ambitious than paranoid though. He switched on a map of known space and his eyes scanned from the Imperial Diamond Worlds to the large mostly detail deficient Klindathi Imperium the ancient enemies of humankind. Then he glanced upward to the Nintep swathes that were reportedly expanding toward the frontiers. The empire faced many great threats and if they were to succeed the subjects of his imperial majesty would have to be convinced or forced to remain loyal. As well it was the temptation of glory that Vactra the Second decided to initiate a military campaign against the Nintep. It also was wise in regard to the security of the empire's frontiers. The insectoid danger was too great a threat to continue ignoring especially as Klindathi ship sightings are growing in number. The old enemies were consolidating to some degree and it would only be a matter of a few years until they attempted to throw their power around in some shape or form.

His father had fought the Nintep many years ago but the swarm his fleet faced was lost and did not represent the true strength of the amalgamation that was laying in the unknown abyss of the cosmos. Mindless beings ruled by their mysterious queens who never attempted to communicate to the human forces. The death of the queen they called Riwaldina saw the death of the totality of their numbers nearly instantaneously. Many warriors and crewman were lost in those battles but our scouts report new infestations in the Far Worlds and barely escaped with their lives. To win against them he would need a leader of great courage and talent but most importantly one whose character was strong and virtuous. Their was one such patrician who was said to meet all those requirements, the man Somolos Economos os Paulos-Damos. He had a reputation as a zealot for the church although not part of the hierarchy itself. To make such a prince a friend rather than an adversary was what the emperor sought especially one of such talent. It was decided that before he even appointed a council that a campaign would commence against the Nintep to burn their closest hives setting back one danger while neutralizing another potential enemy by giving him the honor of waging war in the name of his emperor! It would also earn him political capital to build a foundation for the rest of his reign. The young emperor recorded his holotransmission encrypted of course to Somolos Economos os Paulos-Damos.

To the Esteemed High Prince of Tetuleoan, Somolos Economos os Paulos-Damos

By imperial decree I request for your lordship to take charge of an expeditionary fleet to fight the savage Nintep swarms in the Far Worlds. Our analysis of the region suggests a significant growth of the amalgamation since the campaigns of my father thirty years ago. It is my intent as emperor to protect my subjects and to open up new worlds for settlers. The imperium is surrounded by enemies most esteemed prince and if we are to be prepared for the challenges that lay ahead we must take preemptive measures. You shall be granted fifty million imperial soldiers and three imperial fleets (5 Imperial Army Units/3 Imperial Fleet Units) to take with you to be committed toward the extermination of the two hives that sit closest to our frontiers. If you are successful you will be rewarded handsomely.

His Imperial Majesty, Vactra II of Valdek

Baron Cassius au Augustus | Gens Augustii

House: Gens Augustii
Patrician: Cassius au Augustus
Fiefdom: Liberio
Titles: Baron of Liberio

Background:
The gens Augustii is a family that has held positions of various importance for as long as there have been humans in space. Initially they served as governors of Mars prior to the construction of the first subspace gate. As humanity spread so did the family, with members fighting Maolu Wars and serving in the federal assembly. During the War of the Coalitions there was even a president from the Augustii family. Still, the wars that marked the Collapse took their toll on the family as well, reducing its members in both number and influence. Members who survived the wars fled to Liberio, their last bastion of power, and pooled their resources to side with the Imperium against the church, only submitting at the personal request of Maxiliano Reinhart following the Directive of Peace. Now the Augustii pay only the barest lip service to the Church of MetaStar, with a form of ancient rationalism dominating their court instead.

As of the death of the Emperor the gens Augustii is led by Baron Cassius au Augustus, a man of only 23. Cassius is an only child, raised by his mother following the premature death of his father do to a malfunction on one of his ships. While Cassius’s uncle served as his regent, he was able to focus on his studies, learning etiquette, diplomacy, mathematics, and most importantly of all for a member of the Augustii, warfare. Groomed for the position since his birth, Cassius is determined to live a chivalrous life while rising the Augustii to new heights.

Cardinal
Yeveth Nara | House Nara

House: House Nara
Patrician: Yeveth Nara
Fiefdom: N/A
Titles: Kardinalo de la Eklezio de MetaStar [Trans: Cardinal of the Church of MetaStar]

Background:

The House of Nara is almost as old as the Church itself. For centuries, the Naras have served the Divine Potentate, offering up their sweat and blood - and, on occasion, the blood of others - to the sacred cause of MetaStar. The original Nara is lost to the ages, although he was probably only a lowborn martyr. His successors have progressively scaled the Church hierarchy, and now family matriarch Yeveth Nara sits in the Council of the Hundred. Although pious to a fault, they are equally ruthless, prepared to seize every opportunity for their self-aggrandisement (and the advancement of MetaStar, naturally).

Nara has three children: Kours (23), Malesta (19) and Sunicas (17). This is very much a case of quantity over quality, however. Kours should be the rightful heir, but Yeveth despairs of his reluctance to get to grips with the family business. Malatesta shows promise, even if his eyes are a little too dead at times for her liking. And as for Sunicas, he is a plump princeling whose only redeeming merit is his family name. Nonetheless, Yeveth shall have to whip something out of this unfortunate rabble if they are to uphold the House of Nara into the future.

((I was angling to be Chief Cardinal, but I wasn't sure if that was something I should claim here or if it's awarded by the Emperor at their discretion?))

Visions and Omens
mdb_sf06b.png

The white ceremonial robe of a priest adorned his aging body. The old warrior flushed back his black hair thinning into grey twigs. It was his sixteen anniversary as a teacher at the Temple of Infinite Peace and he expected quite a gathering before classes that day. Long had the priest abandoned worldly desires but he remembered his Akatosh years fondly before he commenced with his service cycle for its divine grace the one force of the universe good, hopeful, and utterly pure. In the mirror his body was sinewy but the flesh was beginning to fall to gravity's imperious advance. Numerous scars from insectoid assaults etched his heroic past into the material dimension each explaining a particular campaign or close call. One scar around his shoulder spoke the worse moment of his life in the Army of the Covenent where a campaign against Nintep remnants saw a rather fierce some battle end with his arm being bitten off by a hatchling. His confidence had been shaken for one of the few times in his life and he felt both shame and bewilderment. It was as he readied for the day that he received one of his visions from MetaStar.

"Brave Shaman, such a beautiful and loyal child. Behold the story of Empress Lily and her noble suiter Endymion!"

His eyes shutter back and he finds himself at what seems like the imperial capital but in a time before the empire. He here's the voice of a man and the hustles whispers following behind. He knows that this man is Endymion a legendary paladin of the dark age. He is a broken man, he has lost all that he ever loved. The vision changes and he finds himself on the bridge of Endymion's flag ship. He is about to destroy the fleet of his enemies a great prince. There is anger at the murder of his love the Empress of a planet once called Sileas. The wisdom of Metastar washes over him with euphoria and peace.

"My blessed Cyril do you understand now why you had to leave that life behind you? Your passions blind you to the light, your mortal body is a great engine that must not be distracted by the whims of animal energy. We must all whip our spirits and our bodies so that we never again bring destruction onto sentient kind!"

In the vision many warrior and crewman die in a great battle and Endymion leads his fleet to Sileas and destroys the surface of the world with his subspace weapons. No life is left on the planet and the distraught prince returns home never to be heard of again.

When he came to on the floor he heard knocking. "Father Cyril..Father Cyril..." the Father-Bishop is waiting for you.

"I'll be there momentarily."

Cyril finished his dressing and cleaning but his day was weighted with the symbolism of the vision. The divine voice had shown him an affirmation of his duties and life but what was he being prepared for? The question would follow him for the days to come.

Vespa, Divine Worlds

On the holy world, Vespa, the clergy intermingle with the pilgrims who consist of aristocrats and peasants alike. They pray in silence surrounded by the statues of prophets and saints. They come to reach the ear of the Potentate who communicates the will of MetaStar and governs the Church. They are shepherd of sentient kind, the divine administrator of fiefdoms, and the arbiter of the Directive of Peace. Vespa was once a swamp world before MetaStar terraformed it into a beautiful planet of great oceans and tropical islands. The beauty of the Divine Worlds is renown throughout known space and serfdom is not permitted in those places. Pilgrims who wish to reap the blessings of the Church must either fight in the its wars or work on its farms and in its factories.
It is here that the Potentate is take after receiving the appropriate vision to be confirmed by the Covenant of the Shamans who also receive visions of the next potentate when the time comes. After seven days of visions and contemplation the awoken one is either chosen by consensus or is considered an anomaly and sent to serve as a shaman.

Potentate of Hu: His Divine Grace, Teledos Maximo Tetaron (GM)
Grand Inquisitor: Cardinal Khavario Akanowari

Teledos received the call to the Potentateship during the Nintep Campaigns after a particularly brutal affair he saw in the carnage MetaStar dressed in white robes walking through the fighting. There he received the blessing of god and the Nintep fell back at that very moment. Always a devout follower he was also a student of the past and was a talented engineer who had built the fortress that was under attack that day. He is a member of the noble House Tetaron and his ascendancy as potentate significantly improved his family's political fortunes in the new imperium. He is a strict enforcer of the Infinite Truths known for his cruel eradication of several baronial families in the Kolahpore Blasphemies a series of crimes against the Church that was corrected through the use of the Army of the Covenent. The potentate has maintained the peaceful balance of power between the Church and the Imperial Throne looking to consolidate the imperium against the growing insectoid menace.

House: Akanowari
Name: High Inqiusitor Khavario Akanowari 'The Demon'
Fiefdom: N/A
Position: Cardinal(leader of the Inqiusition)
Background: Khavario was at a young age taken in by the church. Here, he was brought up by the priest and made into a priest himself. They had also tought him the arts war. After many years as a priest and observer, he was made into a cardinal. As he didn't find the Empire virtous enough, he formed his own hyper-religious group. His group wears custom armor designed by him to look like "angels". He also named his group, "The Red Men of Justice". He is in a wild hunt against anything just slightly heretical. He is nicknamed The Demon, because of his sheer madness and his killings often involves a lot of blood. He is rumored to bathe in the blood of his enemies, and eat their meat with his own lead in it. If he hears anyone talking about this however, he kills them on the spot, unless it is anyone ranked higher than him (this could be the Emperor/High Prince). His real religious madness began when he was assaulted by a group of pagans... Or so he thought, and that was the last straw for the then, young priest. He joined the inqiusition of the church. The organisation that hunted heretics. He however, thought it to be too soft regarding pagans. He was the current High Inqiusitor's Apprentice. When he "died" (disposed of more like) Khavario was made High Inqiusitor. His first act was to denounce all pagans and made it the holy quest to eradicate it...

High Princess Padma Saddat | House Saddat

House: Saddat
Patrician: Padma
Fiefdom: {WIP}
Titles: High Princess of Kuruvilla, Baroness of Xiao Luan, Barnet, Nova Moscow, and Apollo
Background: Hailing from Ancient Earth in the Asiatic Zone, House Saddat proved to be ambitious, characterized by intelligent leaders, not exactly warriors but scientists, engineers, and doctors, earning them trustworthiness among both the people and their allies. During the Federation Age, House Saddat was among the many forward-thinking families who embraced this era of enlightenment and advancement. The resulting decay hit House Saddat harshly, and for a time, it was on the verge of irrelevance, having been overshadowed by brutal rivals. However, the Saddat held on, establishing themselves among the many rising feudal houses that commanded loyalty.

Slowly the Saddat rose above its rivals, using the fluctuating sands of politics to always end up supporting the best horse the situation demanded. Soon Hose Saddat dominated a number of planets, Xiao Luan - the name came from the memory banks of a recovered Archilect - acting as the base of operations for Saddat activity. When the Church of MetaStar surged in power, the Saddat relented and aligned itself along with the technological superiority offered, cementing their control over the entire region known as Kuruvilla.

However, this was with great reluctance, made solely for political gain, as the Saddat by this point had turned towards the worship of a recovered Archilect - the very one that produced the name Xiao Luan - whose rambles provided such degree of interesting trivia, but more importantly, it provided medical information allowing the Saddat to enjoy healthy and fruitful families producing many children.
This Archilect, whose casing was inscribed with the name Thoth, is privately an object of worship within the Saddat and within their systems in general, and while the Church of MetaStar is the de-jure faith, in reality, its adherence is a formality.

Currently, the Saddat family is managed by High Princess Padma Saddat, young, 26, but talented and raised properly, her having succeeded her father Ashoka, a wise man cut down before his time by a tragic and unknown disease that not even Thoth could prevent. Padma and her three sisters represent the newest generation of the Saddat, retaining their historic affinity for culture and diplomacy, solving their issues with poise, not blunt force. Padma herself has been trained for this position, having studied under her father and having already been given responsibilities as an ambassador.

With uncertainity looming over the Empire, what shall lie in store for the noble Saddat?

High Princess Esmery vi Altarian of Tavares | House Altarian

House: House Altarian
Patrician: Esmery vi Altarian
Fiefdom: TBA
Titles: High Princess of Tavares, Baroness of Peixoto, Trax, and Aebil
Background:

The members of House Altarian have held the planets of the Tavares Principality in their dynastic grip ever since the creation of the principality by the Emperor in 13 IY. The family itself dates back to ancient Earth, where they owned one of the many private companies who conducted resource extraction operations on other planets: the Altarian Corporation. The company grew rich off of the valuable materials mined from these planets, and were infamous both for their ruthless business tactics, which included aggressively taking over other organizations and using intimidation, blackmail, and murder, as well as for their disregard for the environments of the planets they harvested from. During the decline of the Federation, the Altarian Corporation grew to dominate the federation’s politics, encouraging the widespread corruption within the federal system and working to ensure officials favored it and not its competitors.

However, the previous good fortunes of the Altarian family would be dwarfed by the great wealth and power it would attain during and following the Collapse, when the divided corporate influence in the government triggered the War of the Coalitions. The Altarian Corporation attempted and was successful in using the conflict to cement its hold on some of the most valuable planets in the galaxy and solidify its place as one of the great families of the Federation. The core powerbase worlds of the Corporation, however, were Peixoto, Trax, and Aebil, which would later become part of the Tavares Principality. The members of House Altarian would later become known as ‘Princes of Hu’, and would fight against the church of MetaStar along with the other great houses. Following the conclusion of the wars, the formation of the Imperium of Hu, and the establishment of the Imperial System, Leon ri Altarian was named High Prince of the newly-created Tavares Principality, and given ownership over the worlds therein.

Leon ri Altarian had seven children, three of them male and four of them female – the second youngest being Emsery vi Altarian, born in 57 IY. During the days of the Altarian Corporation, competition within the family was ruthless and fierce, and internecine squabbling, plotting, and even assassination was common. This did not cease following the rise of the family to high nobility, but rather only worsened. High Prince Leon hinself encouraged it, believing that the children of his who survived would be the strongest, smartest, and best suited to wielding power. As she matured from a young girl to a young woman, Esmery watched as two of her brothers were killed in duels, her eldest brother was poisoned by her elder sister, her elder sister was stabbed to death by an unknown assailant, and her other sister was strangled to death by an assassin for hire – leaving Esmery, now the eldest child, as her father’s heir.

In 68 IY, Leon vi Altaria died of thyroid cancer, and Esmery vi Altarian became High Princess of Tavares, and Baroness of Peixoto, Trax, and Aebil, at the young age of 18. As a result of the power struggles within her family, Esmery is intelligent, cynical, and utterly ruthless in obtaining her goals; she has seen firsthand what weakness gets you in life, and is determined to be strong instead.
