Welcome to Solaris: Rise of Humanity!

Welcome everyone to Solaris, a pseudo nation game which can evolve to become a fully one if the actions of the players lead to such outcome, however many more outcomes can come true, as freedom of the players is something i believe deeply.

Solaris will be a space game centered around the solar system and maybe even beyond that, who knows after all!. In solaris players will play as a colonial governor, a simple colonist, colonial military men, a pirate or maybe you want to bring GOD to the colonies? if its your thing do it!. In any case you will then be from one of the main colonial powers of Earth.

So who are these colonial powers? they are the remaining nations of the world whom battle for supremacy on earth and populate the solar system for its resources. The Nations on earth will send from time to time depending player actions and events: supplies, money, weapons, soldiers and people to the colony or create new ones as they expand. They too will engage in warfare against one another and drag their loyal servants to conflict, for no one would ever think to revolt...right?

It is important to mention that Solaris will show several new systems for training and fleet maintenance in difference from my previous spaces games, another thing is one i am very proud of is a very comprehensive combat simulator which will take into account fleet composition, levels in training, different technology, the structural state of the fleet, and your luck for a very comprehensive battle result in which all will play a significant role to assure your victory.

I would lie if i did not say much of the game will be based in the colonies, their interactions and response to events on earth and the system at large, as such must mention that there are colonies all over the solar system so your colony can be anywhere really from the frozen pluto to the asteroid belt or the beautiful terraformed mars, where sprawling cities dot the landscape.. Much of the colonial Humanity however live in floating colonies inside the asteroid belts, the moons or simple great floating cities in the gravity belts of the planets of the system.

The story will start at the year 2350, humanity have advanced great strides across the centuries, currently being what have been named as the best era to be alive (of course when have human ever said that before!), technology have reached new heights, in all the areas, from advanced AIs, augmentation, virtual reality, genetic engineering to the colonization of the solar system by millions of men and woman.

Even so all this advancement have not deliver yet the panacea of eternal peace and happiness which was promised, instead inequality is greater than ever, repressive government, lack of freedom, back breaking labor and conflict remains and are aggravated by all the new advancements. After all no new technology or discovery can erase from humans the greed, the hunger of power and selfishness of the race. This is the world in which Solaris will exist and place where things are not fair and people struggle to make for themselves a place in the reaches of humanity.

Name of Character: The name of your character
Citizenship: aka which nation you are from.
Title/government position/career: In here it goes what your character is, maybe a governor of a colony (say which), a pirate, a noble and so on.
Assets: possible material possessions or other things that make yourself a help
Bio/History: Your biography

Game Mechanics
Travel time for Ships:
faster than Light travel have not being reached yet, as such ships simply navigate the void form trade post and colony to colonies. To have an estimate how much take to arrive somewhere, a fleet at full speed may arrive with enough luck by the end of the year to the Kepler ring, but that is departing on January, and unlikely. With that you can calculate the travel time to the planets and so on. As is a game some liberties will have to be taken as such, we will not use the real distance to the planets, but instead will "assume" the solar-system is on scale of distance (even if it really isn't)

Orders:
Every player have to "normal orders" and one Campaign order. The normal order is all related to administration and other things you may want to do, meanwhile the campaign order is your military order where you will detail your movements and objective etc for military operations.

Unit Costs
Corvette: 700 million
Frigate: 5 billion
Cruiser: 20 billion
Destroyer: 20 Billion
Battle-cruiser: 120 Billion
Battleships: 120 Billion
Light Carrier: 70 Billion

Colonial Militia: 4 Million

Lore and Important Information

Nations of Humanity
The North American Union
abUymC7.png

The successor state of what once was the United State of America. The North american union came about the merge of Canada with United State of America after the end of the first colonial war. This was easily done as the Russian landing and occupation of Quebec showed that they no longer could defend itself. Another thing that changed during the war was the finally intervention of corporations more directly into the state as laws to allow their colonization and private armies to help the nation were passed. They would go to provoke the NU-mexico war of 2215-2235 which end with the occupation and then annexation of Republic of Mexico into the union. The Union would solidify its solitary control of the Luna region as well the rapid expansion into the core region, mostly gained in the 1st Colonial War, many adjudicated to corporations to speed up and cheapen the process.

The joining of Israel to the union as a way to fight off caliphate attempt at conquest and a foothold to control them in 2200 have keep the union at war levels constantly, making Israel the most heavily fortified borders in the world.

The defeat in the Korean War finally brought down the last remains of liberalism in the nation as the dissenters and anti war were blamed and persecuted, millions ran to the colonies where security services and laws were much more lax. In here they kept the dream of what once was alive. The right of corporations to own the colonies was taken away in 2300 as a way to gain monetary funds and replenish extreme cost of the Korean War of 2270. In exchange governorship over them was allowed by corporations, as well as taxation and so on in exchange for yearly Union tax transfer as well as a colony tax issued upon such corporations, meanwhile it made many, nothing could be done at that time by the colonial corporations.

Currently one of the most exploited loopholes, for companies with colonies and colonial companies is to tax heavily their production and resources in their colonies then deduct that taxation as if taxed by the union from theyearly union taxes, reducing their taxation greatly with that amount, it is specially useful for the new and upcoming colonial focused companies as they are usually smaller or dont have the connections and influences of the established ones whom can easily get tax credits, or nullification and so on.

Currently of all the colonial powers, the forces of the Union have the biggest colonial navy and marine forces, much of it centered around the Luna Special Administrative Zone, which meanwhile is not the biggest Union colony, it contain much of its colonial industry and shipyards.

The Latin American Federation
Kl5Iogt.png

The Federation came to be from the pressure the free republics of Latin america were suffering from the North American Union and the re-established Empire of Brazil. After the annexation of Uruguay and Paraguay by Brazil the Andean alliance reached out to their northern brethren joining in a trade alliance which quickly morphed into a defensive pact.

During the Guatemalan incursion by the North American Union, the Federation managed to fight them to stalemate, however with not enough forces to push back a deal was agreed with the lost of Belize and half Guatemala. In contrast with their southern and northern neighbors the LAF have experienced a explosive grow in civil rights and liberalism, maybe as a way to assert their own existence against the more reactionary regimes of america. Some even say the LAF is too free, with little limitations on what they call the natural rights of humanity. This can be easily observe on their colonies were governors have the lesser amount of control from the central state, and with it lesser amount of funding, yet are simple taxed to keep the “liberal Paradise” alive.

The Brazilian Empire
WZF4ATL.png

The fall of the Brazilian republic was an announced death, after heavy social issues and problems the republic came to end in a military coup in 2075. For the next 75 years the juntas would go and come as fighting for power inside would keep the nation in woes and problems. After years of problems finally someone came with enough charisma and using techniques later emulated by the Russians nationalist harked back to the glory days of the Brazilian empire, with public discontent at all time high and the 1st Colonial War raging affecting the economy of the Empire with its military commitments a popular revolution started in Rio de Janeiro, It took ten years, but the Republic fell apart by the end 2155 and the Empire established.

From there Brazil began a modernization effort, for the poor and destroyed nation, by 2225, the Brazil you could see was so much different from the older times and the monarchy was rooted back firmly, the first colony was created in 2250. Uruguay and Paraguay brought into the empire, in the war with the Andean alliance in 2253.

With the reforms and new industrialization the empire have become a powerful force in the world, as their colonial empire grows every year. Much of their possession are in the high ore regions to feed the booming industries of Brazil. In them the Viceroys and Dukes rule the colonies as kings themselves sending their tribute to the Emperor to avoid any issues, yet many could think to establish themselves as a actual kings.

The European Federated Union
07duqJt.png

One of the most advanced and powerful states as well as relative free, the European federated union came as the last step in the European union project after the end of the first colonial war lead to the conclusion that centralized unity was needed as such was federalized.

The 1st Colonial War, even with the great cost incurred gave ample swats of colonial lands to the EFU specially, rights to colonize Mars: The first and still only terraformed planet in the solar system where several colonies were established as well a head start over much of the world to colonize the core regions of the solar system.

The EFU suffered a major defeat in the Eurasian Containment war which led to the still, very bitter lost of most of eastern Europe as well as several colonial areas. Rebuilding from the defeat. The EFU finalized its conquest of North Africa which put them at odds with the caliphate and the south African republic and several wars and skirmishes have occurred across the last century.

As a way to keep the Eurasian Empire in check the union financed the so called Free Eastern Europe army which keep fighting the Eurasian for almost seventy years until its recent destruction and some say fleeing to the colonies to hide and bide their time.

Even though is not the strongest military of the nations of earth, the EFU posses one of the highest technology advancements as well the second largest colonial empire, with their jewel upon the sprawling cities of Mars.

The Eurasian Imperial State
dCATegr.png

After the humiliating defeat of The Russian Federation in the First Colonial War. The Russian State was heavily indebted, lost most if not all its colonies in space and was partitioned in several new nations, all thanks to the United States of America and The European union.

From the collapse brave men and woman rose to defy the end of what they called the slavic people and little by little reunited the federation land once more by 2175. With the world power busy somewhere else no one stopped them. Rebuilding was fast, as the new Russian empire power and more importantly armed forces grew, the worried neighbored launched a new war to broke them apart. What was thought to be easy ended in disaster for the allied forces by 2220 Russian forces occupied northern china as well as pushing the European forces outside of eastern europe. With the situation going critical a costly peace was agreed for the nations involved: Chinese Democratic Republic lost the majority of its colonial areas, much of eastern Europe was annexed by the empire and heavy payment by the EFU towards the Empire given.

After that the empire dedicated itself to rebuild the extensive damage and space colonization keeping outside war for the last one hundred years as fighting rebels and populating the solar system kept them busy. However with the last remnant of Free Eastern Europe rebel army finally crushed on earth, many wonder if war is soon to come for the ambitious and powerful nation.

The colonial areas are administered by new nobles and governors set by the Imperial state, filled with greed, corruption and worse rebels from the eastern lands bidding their time to once more fight their oppressors.

The United Persian Caliphate
The Caliphate was build by war and death through the XXII century with the destruction and never ending jihads. Eventually the most stable of the middle east nations, the republic of Iran managed slowly and little by little to united the region. By 2200 under Ciro V the conquest of the middle east was finished by bringing down the regions adjacent to the Mediterranean sea. In the 2225 Ciro V launched his now famous conquest of Egypt as the European union forces were expelled, but failed to take over the Republic of Turkey. They would remain free supported by the EFU until their ascension to membership in 2240 after the end of the third Caliphates-European Union war.

The failed jihad for Kashmir by Ciro VI against India led to reforms to the decentralized structure of the empire in the outlying regions, bringing more power to the Caliph, yet starting a series of rebellion to be put down by 2280. Meanwhile the Caliphate possess a moderate presence on the solar system, those colonies are one of the most heavily armed in the solar system with some exceptions and are getting population and support constantly.Currently engaged in skirmishes in northern Africa and turkey against the European Union And South Africa for the controls of South Sudan.

The South African Republic
IQ9Hq46.png

The South African Republic is composed by the southern half of the african states from the xxi century state. The republic managed to reform and rebuild after the civil war of 2100, the new government rebuilt the state from scratch and slowly improved the nation, by keeping out of the First Colonial War the republic heavily profited, making union with it extremely attractive for the poor and wrecked nations of africa. Little by little all neighboring states became dependent and eventually joined voluntarily with the republic in the chaos that followed the end of the war.

Currently the only functional nation of african origins, engaged in deeply fight with the EFU and the caliphate for control of the rest of the continent which keep the failed states and anarchy of northern and central africa.

The Chinese Hegemony
7GWyRIH.jpg

The mighty Chinese Hegemony, the powerful asian state whom after a bit of decline managed to once more become the most populated on earth for the last 75 years. The hegemony victory in the Korean War of 2270-2280 solidified its power as The indian republic, the North American Union and the myriad of states from the pacific were defeated and crushed by the one hegemony.

The hegemony was born from the people’s republic of china near 2150 after the defeat in the first colonial war over the moon and mars settlement by the forces of United State and their allies. After the defeat the nation was forced to drastically reduce its army as well as to disband the so called communist governments as a democracy surged aligned with the USA. The chinese poured enormous resources to colonize space as their global ambitions lay lid shattered by the war, however the nation had troubles internally and the resurgent russian empire from the ashes of their defeat put everyone on panic mode.

The disastrous Eurasian contentment war of 2180-2220 which ended with the occupation north china by the eurasian forces gave rise to a new ideology of a united people under a super centralized government, harking back to imperial and the good times of communism revolt sparked and the hegemony was born to equalize all as working cogs of the nation.

With peace agreed with the Eurasian empire and the loss of several colonies and the lands of mongolia, the hegemony rapidly militarized once more as they build up and rebuilt for the next decades until their power was shown in the korean war.

Now meanwhile not the owners of the biggest colonial empire the hegemony have invested heavily in its infrastructure and sending people to them. Many Far flung colonies have become essentially dumping grounds of undesirables to the regime which could develop into problems later on. At odds with the Pacific Alliance as well as the Kingdom of india, what will come it's a mystery to all.

The Kingdom of India
Technically one of the newest nations in the world, they are the successor state of what once was called the biggest democracy of the entire solar system the Indian Republic.

The Kingdom was forged in the fires of the indian revolution by the Indara Gandhi a descendant of the famous man from the xx century. What started as the smallest faction in the collapsing indian republic achieved victory on earth in the destruction of mumbai and the republican high command. The war itself continued another year in the colonies as republican loyalties were high.

Victory in the defense of kashmir against the caliphate aggression solidified their rule and granted them legitimacy for the people as in just a year the caliphate jihad for kashmir was shattered to pieces and a truce established. The young kingdom have aggressively tested the system and its colonies to reduce the still persistent republican loyalty of their population as they keep squashing rebels and troublemakers at home.

The Pacific Alliance
The powerful pacific alliance formed as a reaction of the Korean war of 2270-2280 which devastated the Korean peninsula. The failure of the Indian Republic and the North American Union to organize and cooperate to put an stop to the forces of the Chinese Hegemony in their expansion against the United Korea Republic, launched a full panic for all the Asian pacific region which developed into the pacific alliance during the war dragging enough manpower to launch a liberation of the peninsula, the early withdrawal from the war by India as well domestic problems at home in the north american union reversed the winnings and ended in the lost of Korea in 2280 with dozens of million being evacuated and escaped from Korea to the stars.

With this betrayal by the superpowers the pacific nations decided they needed a better structure and defense with the military command being created. The pacific alliance fought in the war of the Indian revolution from 2290-2310 ending in withdrawal after the destruction of Mumbai and the republican high command. However in this war the military was tested and improved as a new structure akin to the NATO of the early 2000s was created and deployed. With the ascension of the kingdom of India as well the ever aggressive Chinese Hegemony keeps the alliance on its toes as they continue to send people to the colonies for resources.

Population

It is very fair to say that earth is very overpopulated by the dawn of the year 2350, close to 24 billion people inhabit the land of our mother planet, including some mega floating cities.

Break up by nation:

North American Union : 1.7 Billion
Latin America Federation : 1.8 Billion
Empire of Brazil : 1.3 Billion
European Federated Union : 1.6 Billion in Europe, 450 million in North Africa Territories: 2.050 Billion
South Africa Republic : 1.5 Billion
United Persian Caliphate : 2.4 Billion
Eurasian Imperial State : 1.3 Billion
Kingdom of India : 5.5 Billion
Chinese Hegemony : 5.9 billion
Pacific Alliance : 2 Billion

Overpopulated Alexandria

Naturally with overpopulation comes, lack of food, resources, enormous cities and the criminality, poverty and ghetto with them, all around the world. For this and many other reason people flee to the colonies in hope of a new and better life. Meanwhile as all wishes and miracles this doesn't exactly happens, it have fueled the mass migration toward the colonies especially in the last 100 or so years. At the dawn of 2350, even though exact numbers are unknowns it's believed the humans of space are in the range of 500-750 million people.

Technology
As many are probably wondering (and some have asked about) what's the technological state of human race in solaris? can easily be answered as in pretty damn awesome!. Now in all seriousness technology have advanced greatly in many fields in the last hundreds of years.

Robotics and AI:
At the dawn of 2350, it's not uncommon to see worker androids and maids for the rich as well as highly advanced AI, though in the end the idea of Sentient AI was refused by the people of earth they have driven AI to almost sentience level intelligence and understanding. Combat androids and AI are highly used by the more advanced and richer nations such as The Pacific Federation for the Australian and Japanese Forces as well the NAU by its world famous PMC as well for the Corporation's Security Forces (which are effectively private militias). In the EFU where distrust for the “mad sciences” is higher they are mainly used as compliment for their air forces and battle calculation on their ships, similar to what most nations currently do.

The truth is simple the increase of android and other robotic workforce have displaced millions of people from their jobs, and incrementing the size of the poor everywhere, especially however in the EFU lands where all industrial and agricultural jobs have simply being “modernized” driving millions to escape to the colonies for opportunities.

kvT8TIp.jpg

Robotic Security Guard
It is a new fad world wise for the rich to not only have robotic servants but to partially or totally robotic their security apparatus, as well you can't bribe an AI, and they will surely give their live for you against a furious mob.

In some countries like the Latin American Federation, there are movements to give rights to androids and end the exploitation as slave, with many of such movements advocating to remove limitations and finally give the last step for the AI’s to sentience.

What must be still remembered that unlike in Europe, it is cheaper to have a human labor than robotic one in much of the industries, after all human lives are cheap in an overpopulated world.

Genetics and Biomechanical Augmentations:

-A field that have done great leaps have been that one of genetics and biomechanical augmentations. Just as how robotics have been taken up by the PF, augmentations have been speared on by the EFU meanwhile genetics have been by the LAF. No matter though who really did as technology have spread everywhere and are used extensively (especially where they were first developed). In the field of augmentations, for those that can afford them you can literally replace much of your body with bionics parts, increasing sight, strength and many other things. However much of the population don't have that kind of money and content himself with some part exchanges of replacing damaged organs. It is on the EFU where everyone to the most poor labor extensively to replace something to be better.

In the fields of genetics the road have been one of what once was considered science fiction. The so called designers baby are the ways of the rich and powerful in which their babies are tailored to the most specific details as possible and grown in vats so the woman won't have to have the traumatic effects of pregnancy. The details can go as wild as to have eyes of red color or natural purple hair and much more like intelligence, strength, height, looks and so on. on the other hand the poor cannot afford such changes and struggle to at least remove inherited diseases or improve a bit over their own traits, widening much more the rip between the have nots and the have it all.

S3G3ZQZ.jpg

Designer baby inside its Growing Vat

Modified plants and animals are the norm in much of the world to increase resistance and productivity except a sore place, of the EFU, where drawing from the ideas of the XX century on GMOs and other “mad sciences”, in order to allow personal freedoms (and thanks to the push of the rich) GenMod people have been allowed. In the Caliphate however GenMod people are strictly forbidden for interfering with the role of God upon humanity (even though the rich have their children outside the country to GenMod them, so is more a control thing). New animal and plant species have been created little by little like much of you can see being grown in the colonies.

Virtual Reality:
-Virtual Reality meanwhile slowed down a bit during the first years of the 2100s have by now become a staple of every civilized nation. The V-net was created finally close to 2125 giving the chance to users to “dive” into the net itself and interact with content, from their own development and advances grew immensely. With the advancements of the virtual reality by 2350 users can truly dive into a anything really, virtual games and programs put the user inside the software and they can feel, taste, hear anything like reality itself like a second reality. More importantly the V-Net have become the world inside the world, user become avatars inside the net and interact directly with it, talk with more users and build their own sites as small worlds. Esports, business and much more is conducted in the V-net, the marvel of our time.

dXafs7Z.jpg

An example of a V-Net popular site

With the world fractured into Mega nations one may think such net cannot exist but the truth is each one have built a network that can easily simple be isolated from the others if necessary like in times of war and so on. The V-net have been expanded to the colonies as well where is much more shady and less state controlled because the lack of resources. Meanwhile the vast space between colonies as well as earth make things delay a bit, Especial zones have been established where the Network can still remain in real time, they usually run in the areas around the planets of the solar system and incorporate all nearby colonies. It is possible to establish a real time network but the investment into relay outpost in the deep of the space haven't motivated the colonial nations to do so to the chagrin of the colonies (some say is to maintain the colonies isolated from each other of real time as well earth and keep them under control easier).

Weaponry

-With Constant warfare and mega nations on earth weaponry have developed quite heavily on our beautiful and war torn earth. on earth the nations can been observed using mechanical units, heavy tanks, all forms of aerial fighters and much more to wage devastating war upon each other. However the truth is war on space have not been in grand scale or that much worth it since the first great colonial war. Much have concentrated in forcing the nations to give up their colonies and then swiftly occupying them or colonized their claimed areas.

Things may be changing though as colonies have grown massively and resources, food and water become a problem on earth bigger every year. At the start of the game all colonial nations will posses a Main battlefield head up by a Dreadnought-Class ship, first developed by the NAU fifteen years ago, the latest have been the deployment of the Brazilian Dreadnought ship. However no more investment than one have been done as they are fairly expensive as well no real action have been done on that time. Most of the battlefield are a few battleships and dozens or hundreds or smaller, lighter and cheaper crafts.

All colonies will beginning with some sort of Colonial detachment under the colonial administrator of smaller ships as well as some Colonial militias, and Space Marine garrisons (which are under the command of that Nation Space command). The truth is heavier equipment is expensive and in many cases unwilling or unusable to be deployed to the colonies for which most nations have invested on their fleets.

Space navies Units

Fighter/bombers: The smallest of the ship classes, most fighters are one or two seated with bombers going up to four seats. The fighters as their name imply as fast strike ships mainly to be used against bombers and other fighter units. They are lightly armored and their weapons are of low impact. The bombers in the other hand have more platting as well possessing much powerful weapons to impact ships of all size and damage them. The trick is one bomber won't do much at all to a bigger ship, many will shred it to pieces little by little.

Corvettes:

The smaller of what can actually be called warships. They are lightly plated and possed low amount of weapons as well of low impact. They are used mainly in swarm tactics, flanking actions as well as disposable ships to protect bigger ones. They small size allow them to fight against the fighter/bomber class ships even if not at levels of the specialized ships for it.

Frigates:
The second to smaller ships. Better armored and armed than the Corvettes, the frigate make the backbone of most of the flanks in the navies for their relative cheaper price. They are fast (though slower than a corvette) and can take more damage.

Cruisers:
Using a similar design than the Destroyers the cruiser is focused for combat against other warships unlike its cousin class. Much faster and better armed than a Frigate. The cruiser is used to give that extra punching force to the flanks as well lead them. For poorer forces the Cruise can be use as a substitute of main battle ships but it's not the most recommended against heavier forces.

Destroyers:
The cousin class of the cruiser, the destroyer have been stripped of their heavier Weaponry and with slower engines, the money investment have gone to a heavier plating and what is called unconventional weapons. Mainly serve the function of AA against the swarms of fighters and bombers. A fleet that can't defend itself against them would be surely torn to pieces by a prepared enemy.

Battle-cruisers:
The first developed class of the Battle line ships. The battle cruiser is heavily armed, yet its platting is much lower than its cousin the Battleship. However it makes it up by much more powerful engines to grant a higher speed and maneuverability. Used for nations that want to have a faster battle line and complement it with great crew training.

Battleships:
The second Class of Battle line ships. The battleships have much more plating than its cousin the battle cruiser, armed with similar weaponry but much more slower. A easier target to it, the higher plating theoretically should hold up.

Dreadnoughts
:
The latest Class to be introduce in the space forces of earth. The Dreadnought is expensive as its powerful. Much bigger than a Battleship the slow dreadnought defend itself from its much faster enemies by a mix of heavy plating and a lot of guns. Truly a sigh to behold currently each main battlefield from earth posses one acting as its Main ship.

Light Carriers:
The Swarm Ships as they are nicknamed. The Light carriers, launch several squadrons of fighters and bombers during conflict as well for patrol mission. The current standardized rate is to hold four fighters for every 2 bomber squadron.

Heavy carriers:
A theoretical ship, for which rumors have been going around could be possible be designed and built to hold much more squadrons than current carriers as well designed to reduce the rate of fighter/bomber.

Behemoth:
Another of the theoretical ships, rumors are around designs are under development but nothing proved yet. The Behemoths would be a truly terrific size on the battlefield, dwarfing even the huge dreadnoughts and with weaponry and platting beyond anything currently seen.

The Armed Forces

Colonial Militias:
Colonial militias are men and woman of the colonies whom serve sometimes as security forces and more often than not to quell any rebellion. The true intended use is to fight against occupation attempts or raiding by pirates or enemy nations and colonies. Most colonies have at least a few squads of militia for this function. The colonial militias will be the forces the governor will be able to raise for the colony. This of course can change as colonies get better or even break out being able to form real armies.

Colonial Marines:
The colonial marines are the armed forces of the colonial nations on their colonies, theoretically to defend them against enemy or pirate raids, they too serve the purpose to keep them in line when necessary. Colonial Marines are well trained and equipped for their functions, armed with advanced battle rifles as well as combat armor. Meanwhile the bigger colonies always have a garrison of colonial marines this is not the case in the smaller or furthest away ones.

Battle Mech:
meanwhile tanks or other wheeled vehicles are not that useful to sometime outright unusable. Mechanical units possess more flexibility and still can carry heavy firepower compared to infantry units (yet they are often not as armored as tanks and other main battle vehicles). Battle Mechs have only been deployed once to the colonies and that was during the First Colonial War, such deployment can be seen in our time as a pretty desperate measure. A colony armed with some can make much easier the process of “liberating” a rival.

Name of Character: 'Marshal' Yuri (Real but relatively unknown name: Ray Udo Vladimirescu)

Citizenship: The European Federated Union

Title/government position/career: Govenor of one of the Mars Districts, former commander of the EFU forces in Romania

Assets: Secret Mind Control (testing) Facility somewhere on Mars, friends in the high command of the EFU Naval Command, psychic powers.

Bio/History: Yuri was born in the State of Romania to a well-off middle-class family. As he was not the oldest son, he was not bound to the family trade and land as his brother. Instead he joined the army and when he rose to the rank of colonel, he was responsible for overseeing the construction of several fortifications along the border with the Eurasian Imperial State. A few years later, he was put in charge of the Federations forces in Romania. Due to some pretty sketchy things happening under his command, he was resigned and they placed him as govenor of one of the Mars colonies to not anger his powerful friends in the army and the navy. When he got to Mars, he quickly set himself to continue his weird projects, however this time, he was so far from the Earth that the EFU does not know about this. His base of operations is called the Epsilon castle and not many knows what is going on in there. He is rumored to have great psychic powers. He styles himself Marshal and it is known that he rules his colony with an iron hand.

Name: Julian Lucius Thorne

Citizenship:
North American Union

Position:
Director of the Luna Special Administrative Zone (and CEO of Thorne Enterprises)

Assets:
Company Monopoly on Shipbuilding, Military Connections, and Advanced Piloting Abilities

Bio/History:
Born in 2324, the only legitimate son of Richard Thorne and Caroline Bradford, Julian Thorne immediately became the heir to Thorne Enterprises and was predestined a lively future. The Thornes had always prided themselves on being descendants of nobility, even the Company bears the family crest, and Julian was no different. While attending school, he always maintained the highest grades and maintained peak physical condition, considering himself to be an 'example' for the 'commoners.'

Despite having graduated with honors, his father continued to belittle his accomplishments and push him further. So, after having become tired of his father's unrelenting pressure, Julian left home and got a commission in the navy as an officer on board a carrier. As a Naval Flight Officer, he underwent mandatory training for piloting fighter crafts and other light vessels. After a year of serving as a flight officer he was promoted to Commander and given his own flight wing. Eventually his flight wing was one of the ones stationed on Luna after terrorist attacks on the Lunar administration buildings. During his service on Luna, he became quite a hero and respected by most Lunar colonials, even among many of the terrorist groups they respected him as an opponent. Then his father died and the company had been left to him.

After being honorably discharged from the navy, he took up his role as the CEO of Thorne Enterprises. However, he was presented with the opportunity to become the Colonial Director of Luna, as the leading company in the shipbuilding industry, Thorne Enterprises held the largest monetary investments into the Luna colony, these large investments allowed Thorne Enterprises to appoint the next Director of the Luna colonies. Thorne decided instead to place forth a poll for the colonials to decide on the next Director, believing that only someone who the colonials trusted could become a successful administrator. The poll results came back, and the people wanted no one other than Julian Thorne himself to lead them. Thorne reluctantly agreed to take up the office of Director and began working towards the future.

That was a year ago, and now a year later, the colony is envied across Sol for it's success under the leadership of Thorne. Using Thorne Enterprises to push forward and produce colonial goods, the colony has thriving industry primarily based around developing and producing new spacecraft and armaments. Now the vast majority of the Union vessels are produced by Thorne Enterprises, even most of the civilian craft in the Union are produced on Luna by either incorporated companies of Thorne Enterprises or the T.E. main yards. With their eyes set on the future, will the Lunar colonies remain strong, or will the colonials' luck run dry?

Name of Character: Lawrence Harbach
Citizenship: North American Union
Title/government position/career: CEO of the Nanotrasen Corporation/ Governor of Ganymede Mining colony
Assets: Significant mineral and gas mining operations across Jupiter and the Kepler Belt, Space Station Dorado

Bio/History: Born in the one of the many overpopulated slums in the Union, Lawrence realized early on that the only way to improve his social status was join one of the corporations and try to ascend the ranks. To this end Lawrence joined the then small (for the deregulated, monopoly prone markets of North America) but fast growing Nanotrasen Corporation. At the time primarily a robotics company, Nanotrasen began a shift into off-world mining that quickly became its largest earning asset. During this time Lawrence worked and began rising though ranks at pace threatening to others. Soon Lawrence would be introduced into the internal competition of corporations via baptism of fire.

For his achievements Lawrence was placed at the head of a new project. The company received a military contract contract for designing a new class of combat android. Good progress was being when several rival executives, seeking to end this upstart's meteoric rise, had the project sabotaged. The Androids' programming "malfunctioned" during preparations for their first field test and went rouge. The incident cost the company over a million in damages and the contract was suspended "indefinitely". As the project's head Harbach received most of the blame, barely escaping termination of his contract. However he would receive punishment, but after that learned he would have to be ruthless if he was regain his status and spite those who caused his downfall.

For his role in the incident Lawrence was demoted and sent to oversee a small mining station in the Kepler belt. He found little opportunity there and it seemed it would be the end of his career. However events would change when, by luckiest of circumstances, a piece of debris carrying a prototype EFU AI drifted into the station's range and retrieved by a salvage. However it's existence was not unknown as a highly trained special ops unit attacked the station seeking to retrieve it. What happened next only a handful know for sure but it ended all aboard the station dying in a catastrophic explosion (except for a handful of station personnel including Harbarch). But Harbach was able to secure the AI for Nanotraesen and this was what he need to revitalize his career.

Back in an executive position, Harbach carved a path to the highest positions in the company. This time anyone who stood in his way soon had their careers decimated or met with unfortunate "accidents". Learning from his mistakes, Harbach took few chance and every move he made was in his favor or made it so. It has his ambition that secured Nanotrasen rights to gas mining over Jupiter and control of the colony on Ganymede. This Action propelled him to CEO and now he is in position expand his influence even further.

Name of Character: Sutan Malaka
Citizenship: Pacific Alliance
Title/government position/career: Overseer/Kantoku of the Pac-All V-07 asteroid cluster (aka Outer Heaven)
Assets: A space shuttle and bodyguards
Bio/History: Born in Jakarta in 2296 to a father suffering from PTSD gained during service in the India Revolution, Sutan worked from a young age to support himself, and rise as high as he could. He wanted to be a man that didn't drag down others, and sought to make Indonesia a powerful and self-sufficient nation, not one dominated by Japanese and Australian interests. He received a degree in Geo-Political Economics from the University of Jakarta, and attempted to build a career in Indonesian politics. However his refusal to be a stooge to the foreign corporations that dominated the Indonesian economy severely limited his means of advancement.

However he received an important opportunity in 2324, when the burgeoning Pac-All Space Program (PASP) sought to establish a major international colony in the asteroid field. Prior colonies had been nationally dominated, by either the Japanese or the Australians, but political pressure had demanded the seventh colony in the asteroids, V-07, to be multinational in nature. The Indonesian contingent was to be fairly small and overshadowed by even the Vietnamese contribution, so few were interested in joining the endeavour. Sutan however saw it as the opportunity he was looking for. He joined as a minor economic and political advisor, with most expecting him to be irrelevant and ignorable.

This was not to be, due to his quickly forged friendship with the Australian David Strenson, the Vice Overseer of the colony. Strenson saw Sutan's potential and within a month of the establishment of the colony, Sutan was one of Strenson's most trusted advisors. The Japanese Kantoku (Overseer) Hideki Toyanomi cared little for the plans and thoughts of his second-in-command though, and held all the real power within the colony, making even this latest rise for Sutan sharply limited. Toyanomi was focused on resource extraction, maximizing efficiency over building up the colony itself, to ingratiate himself with the corporate backers that controlled the political interest in the colonial asteroids. Sutan and Strenson disagreed with this course of action, holding that the resources gained from the asteroids were not worth enough to back the colonial endeavour in and of themselves. Instead they wanted to create self-sufficient colonies that could use the resources to build themselves up, rather than just transport the resources back home. Transportation costs made such a system inefficient, and by making the colonies powerful in and of themselves, they could act as independent bases and production centers, to build a strong solar fleet that could act against the colonies of those who threatened the Alliance. A few tons of steel wouldn't turn the tide of a war against India or the Hegemony, but if their colonies and supplies could be cut and redirected, that would serve the war effort far more.

Despite the merits of their plan, Strenson and Sutan were ignored by Toyanomi, who continued to run the colony as a glorified mining camp. All PASP colonies were run such a way, but the multinational nature of V-07 made it particularly susceptible to strikes, since the non-Japanese colonists felt they were being enslaved by foreigners, and in response even the Japanese colonists questioned if such criticisms were true. The first major strike occurred in 2328, first of non-Japanese miners, but within half a week, a fair amount of Japanese miners had joined them. Toyanomi tried to order them back to work, then offer them token concessions, then threaten to de-pressurize their section if they did not get back to work. The miners only grew more resolute, demanding less harsh practices and more development on the colony, rather than just shipping out minerals and metal. The colony had not had a police force of sufficient size to deal with the crisis by Toyanomi's standards, so he had asked for soldiers from Pac-All Space Command (PASC), the military branch of PASP. The arrival of the soldiers only escalated tensions, with emotions flaring over finally after a week long standoff with overeager PASC soldiers opening fire on rowdy miners. By the time Toyanomi had brought the situation back under control, 324 miners were dead, as well as 4 PASC soldiers in what became known as the "Massacre among the Stars". This became a major scandal Earthside, and Toyanomi resigned in disgrace.

Strenson then became Overseer of V-07, and immediately began implementing the reforms both he and the colonists sought. While corporate and political interests on Earth protested such a course of action, the Massacre was fresh in their minds, and gave Strenson the leverage to force through his reforms anyways. With Sutan Malaka as his new vice Overseer, strenson expanded the recreational area of the colony, and cut down work hours. The colony began to show unprecedented growth rates as more and more immigrants arrived. By 2340 V-07 had a full third of the off world population of the Pac-All, with it's wealth and work conditions earning it the nickname "Outer Heaven". Its size, population, and production had also made it the headquarters of PASC. There were 16 other PASP colonies by this point, and most were shifting to follow V-07's model, since it had proven more successful in the long term.

Strenson retired in 2344, allowing Malaka to become the new Overseer. One of Malaka's first actions was to seek a restructuring of the political system of the colonies. While the PASP had established the colonies, each colony reported to political authorities on Earth, not the PASP, making a unified position for the colonies difficult to structure. Malaka thus proposed to create a congress of the colonies to unify their interests and assist negotiations with the government on Earth. The government was reluctant to give such a level of organization to its colonies, but pressure from all the colonial Overseers, not just Malaka, forced them to accept a limited measure. Thus in 2347, the Solar Congress of Pac-All Colonies (SCPAC) was established, with limited powers. Effectively all it could do was act as a forum for discussion between colonies, but it gave a direct means of formulating plans and petitions to submit as a unified colonial body to the government on Earth.

V-07 is not the dominant powerhouse it was ten years ago. Not through any failing of its own, it is even larger and more prosperous than a decade ago, but the emulation of its model in other colonies saw their growth rates explode. V-07 now constitutes less than a sixth of the population of the colonies, of which there are 26 currently. Despite its fall in prominence, V-07 still remains the most important and powerful of the colonies, granting it the status of first among equals in the SCPAC. Overseer Malaka is quite pleased with his success on the colony, and he is widely loved and respected within his home country of Indonesia, with some even asking him to return to Earth and run for President, but he has firmly denied any interest in such a change of careers. Indonesia may have been where he was born, and he still values it greatly, but Outer Heaven is his home now.

Name: Heinrich Adolf Schwarzfeld
Citizenship: European Federal Union
Career: General Fabricator of the Mars Branch of General Omnibionics
Assets: General Omnibionics Mars Branch Research Station – ‘Deus Ex Machina’

Biography: ‘Born’ into the European Federal Union (EFU)in the region of Germany in the year 2210, Heinrich Adolf Scwarzfeld was a ‘designer baby’ as they were called at the time. That is, he was altered genetically during his maturation inside the artificial birthing facility to suit his ‘parents’ tastes. Heinrich’s parents had wanted a child that was a capable of thinking with the same calculating ability as a computer, and they got just that.

Heinrich grew into adulthood without any noticeable events effecting his life, his intelligence soaring rapidly as every day passed, until the time came for him to choose a career. Opting in to working for the private sector, in the multidisciplinary field of Omnibionics (literally ‘All-bionics’), Heinrich found that tinkering with machines and biological matter was an incredibly rewarding way to pass the time.

Rising swiftly through the ranks (although he did not truly care about it) Heinrich was soon elevated to the position of Assistant Fabricator of the Mars branch of the company. Assisting his senior, the then General Fabricator Louis d’Aubigny, in all matters of research ranging from the effectiveness of plasteel based communication arrays in transmitting energy as cheaply and quickly as possible between Mars and Earth to how well the internal organs of lice could survive in the cold vaccum of space, Heinrich was noted as being quick, efficient and notably detached from his work.

Following his senior’s untimely death thanks to a pressurized explosion in the upper levels of the research station ‘Deus Ex Machina’, Heinrich was promoted to the position of General Fabricator. Since his ascension the European has devoted his energies to further investigating the possibilities of genetic manipulation, in particular cloning, and the furthering advancement of the capabilities of artificial intelligence.

Now more machine than man, Heinrich Adolf Schwarzfeld is solely focused inwards, disinterested in the concerns and affairs of the outside world. All that matters to him is that his research goes ahead, as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Name of Character: Dr Simon Esteban Maturin y Domonova
Citizenship: LatFed
Title/government position/career: Director, San Borodino Colony, Europa
Assets: Major shareholder, EnGen Corp, advanced medical and bioengineering degrees
Bio/History: One of the many grandchildren of one of the founders of the world's leading genetic engineering firms, Simon entered into a medical career for altruistic reasons. His wealth and family connections opened doors, but his own genius established his reputation. A major advocate of 'transformative augmentation' and 'purposeful evolution', he was one of the major contributors to the nonprofit San Borodino Project. Conceived with the aim of searching the oceans for signs of extraterrestrial life (so that an entirely new world of genomes could be explored), the San Borodino Colony also boasts a large number of medical research labs, including ironically named "hot labs" for potentially dangerous work.

Perpendicularly Parallel Lines
(Is it an oxymoron? It most certainly is.)

edMJJqL.png

Julian Thorne stood alone in the dark office room of his, looking out of the high rise's tinted glass at the crater-lined Lunar plateau brimming with worker drones and mining equipment. With a half-poured glass of champagne in his right hand, he leaned back slightly and picked up the bottle, pouring another fourth of a glass before beginning to examine the champagne bottle further, which was when the fragrant scent which he had grown so accustomed to, a texture reminiscent of roses, fluttered gently and slowly through his nostrils.

"Martian Vintage-, 2345... Ironic," he noted before tilting his head sideways towards the intruder attempting to hide herself behind the office doorway and asking, "Would you care to join me for a glass, Becky?"

Rebecca Cain, or 'Becky' as Julian called her, had been and still was Julian's (or 'Mister Thorne', as she called him.) secretary and aide for the past five years that he had been owner of Thorne Enterprises. She had an average height, dark dirty-blonde hair, and a fine-built figure that Julian had never placed a hand on.

"I apologize Mr. Thorne, you just looked like you didn't want to be bothered with anything right now," Rebecca said, stepping back from the doorway.

"It's alright, what was it that you needed me for?" Julian asked, turning all the way around towards her and stepping towards his desk slightly.

"It was nothing important sir," she replied before turning away and saying, "I should return to my desk."

He frowned slightly for a moment before persisting, "If it was nothing important, then how about that champagne I offered a moment ago?"

"I... I suppose I could take you up on that offer sir," she reluctantly nodded, turning back towards him and walking across the room to his desk and taking a seat in the client-side chair while he poured a glass of champagne for her before she began to speak again, "If I may ask sir, what's special that calls for champagne on this occasion?".

"Today, would happen to be my father's birthday, he'd be turning forty this year- Had he not died five years ago that is," he answered, handing her the glass that he had finished pouring.

Rebecca accepted the glass, a slightly depressed look marked her face as she turned slightly to view the distant landscapes in the glass window, staring off into the Lunar horizon before speaking again. "My father also died, sir. Oddly enough, he too would have turned forty this year," she said.

"Your step-father was Robert Cain, if am I not mistaken? Died in one of the terrorist attacks, eight years ago I believe?" Julian remarked.

"Step-father? No, he was my biological father, why would you think otherwise, sir?" Rebecca asked, turning to face Julian.

"-Oh that's right, forgive me, I was thinking of someone else I know." he replied after an uneasy moment's pause.

Rebecca raised an eyebrow before asking, "Also... How did you know about my father dying eight years ago, Mr. Thorne?"

"Your father and my father went to the same school together on Earth, when I tried to contact my fathers old friends five years ago to inform them of the funeral service and I found out that Mr. Cain had died three years prior." Julian stated, pausing to think for a moment before continuing on, "Now, as for drinking this champagne of ours... how about we start this evening with a toast?"

"I suppose... But, a toast to what exactly, Mr. Thorne?"

"To- our dearly departed..?"

"To our dearly departed it is then, sir."

"To our dearly departed."

"To our dearly departed."

And with that, their glasses clinked together.

He could hear someone walk on the steep stairway made of black-grey slabs. The man, wearing a brown uniform with the colonial insigns on his left and rigt shoulder pads.

"Ah, mister Ducan, a pleasure to meet you down here in the labs, was your trip from Earth pleasent?" Yuri said in his soothing and calm voice.

"It was rather unpleasent to say the least," Ducan began, looking a bit uncomfortable in the slightly dank facility he was brought into, "It was almost exclusively filled with colonist and hippies visiting Earth. They are perhabs the most annoying people that breathes the valuable oxygen." His head was red, almost as someone had lit him up to warm themselves.

"Please Ducan, calm yourselve. There are no Mars hippies or any other ordinary citizens here in the Epsilon. It is my own personal living space and I can control everyone who goes in and out, so you'll have no problems feeling safe whilst sleeping. By the way, you might want to take off you coat, it can get rather hot the place we're going to... please follow." Yuri said whilst opening a big woden door. Duncan saw that the door was in reality made of steel and was very thick. The two walked into a long corridor with doors on both sides. Ducan looked confused and finally asked: "What is this?"

"Well," Yuri began, "These are the doors into my research facilities. I only use one for the moment though and that is the one we are going into." Yuri walked over to the third door on the left, opened it and invited Ducan in.

"What in the name of god is this?" Ducan said when he saw two brains that lay in two tanks with a purple liquid, with some weird metal things on top of the two, effectively combining them.
Yuri chuckled. "Funny that you ask, but that is the first steps of controlling the whole human civilization, with ones brain. My brain to be specific."

"And how can you do that may I ask?" Ducan didn't look at all convinced.

"The human brain, my dear Ducan, is a pandoras box of electrical charges we can only begin to understand. Most brains are, but recievers, however, some are advanced, capaple of sending and recieving charges as they choose. My brain is of the latter. I also sense something that is very valualbe in you Ducan." Yuri said and moved over to a large mysterious object and continued: "This, is the model of our tool to take over worlds. I call it a psychic beacon and when I my research is done, we can make it in full size and consruct them anywhere we want and control the population in a large area. Now I believe you would want to get some sleep before you begin your duties here in the Epsilon." Yuri said and a servant in a weird armor, almost looking like it protected him against flames. "Before you go Ducan, there are some girls available to you, so you can have some fun when you are in need. Now leave, I have important stuff to take care of." With that, Ducan followed the servant in the weird suit up to his gigantic bedroom, where he slept for many hours.

Next on the Agenda
ganymede_by_powerpointer.jpg

Harbach sits in his office, a very ascetically pleasing room with many expensive looking items dotted throughout the room with a large window (of course it's actually a screen linked to a camera on the surface of the station). Through it one can see Ganymede look across it's horizon, in the background the imposing image of Jupiter stands next to that of the sun, an all around awe inspiring image. Of course Harbach has his back to it instead focusing is attention to the holographic displays on his desk. On the display are a myriad of graphs charts and other statistics, mostly having to do with stocks and market values. After reviewing with this information for what appears to be the forth time, he press a small button on the corner of the display. With a artificial voice is heard on the speaker as Harbach's private AI gives him his scheduled briefing.

"Good morning Mr. Harbach, how my I serve you today?"
"The scheduled briefing please as usual and make the appropriate changes to my schedule as I state them."
"Yes sir. The colony continues to operate at at optimal efficiency, no significant delays of service have been reported. However a recent poll among the population has shown your overall popularity to be at 60%"
"Is this affecting production in any way?"
"No sir, Security forces have proven to be more than capable of suppressing any distracting elements"
"Hmmph, Liberals" Harbach sighs "What about in the company?"
"Your promotion to CEO has been largely welcomed by stockholders, there even appears to have been 2.45% increase in Nanotrasen stocks after the announcement."
"Excellent, any possible issues I should aware of?"
"There is minor lawsuit being leveled by a entertainment company."
"Entertainment company?"
"They claim one of their employees was assaulted by members of our security staff"
"What was this 'employee' doing exactly"
"The Employee in question was a... clown sir"
"A clown?"
"Yes, interviews with witnesses claim he was clearly intoxicated when he began to make rude comments and gestures directed at security personnel checking on a disturbance. According to the security team the clown began throwing cream pies and bananas when given a verbal warning so they to detain him"
"Does any of this have a chance of reaching an actual courtroom?"
"Not likely sir"
"Then why was it brought to my attention?"
"A video of the incident has viral on the local V-net"
"Anything thing else? Preferably something actually important."
"You received a message from the board"
"Play it" There is a brief moment as silence before the recorded message cuts on.
"Mr. Harbach, let me first congratulate you on the promotion, we could not have picked a better man for the job. That said I would like to remind you that the by accepting this position, you have an obligation to both we here at the board as well as our stockholders to..."
"Turn it off." The recording immediately stopped. "Those pretentious... alright then what's next on the agenda."
