Mankind has reached the stars. In the unending hunt for land and resources settlers from Earth have colonized the Solar System. Giant space colonies, housing millions upon millions of souls float above worlds as far as Neptune. Ground based colonies thrive, either under massive domes or upon terraformed lands on Mars, and the moons of Saturn and Jupiter. All is not well though. Tensions have brewed for years between the far flung colonies and Earth. Not to mention among eachother. These tensions finally come to a head as a coalition of colonies declare independence from Earth, war is but days away.

General

Mechanized Glory is as you can probably tell from the image above, a game based heavily in series like Gundam (though with designs also taking from sources like Heavy Gear and the like.) More specifically it's my attempt to do to the Gihren's Greed games what World in Revolution has done for the likes of EU and HOI. For anyone who hasn't played Gihren's Greed (which most likely you haven't as it's never been given an English release) it's about the closest thing to a Paradox style Grand Strategy Game you'll likely ever see out of Japan.

One of the big differences between that game, and this game in comparison to nation style games, is that there will be much more limited factions. Instead of dozens of nations, here there are at the moment, two. The United Earth Government (UEG) and the Independent Colonial League (ICL.) Each faction has specific advantages and disadvantages, along with slots for players at various teirs.

The game will take place in stages, each one representing an 'era' of the setting. The first era as it were is currently going to be known as the 'Colonial War.' Each update will represent 2 weeks ingame. With Mini updates representing one to two days for battles. Each Era will have a time limit, at which point depending on how the war has gone, it will influence the next Era as events happen and old factions break and new ones form. This gives you the opportunity to make new characters, or to keep your characters continuity as they side with other groups.

Each Faction will comprise of one Leader, whose job is to well, run the faction. They control the majority of the budget and research and the general weight of the countries mook armies. Meanwhile other players will play as heroic individuals of their respective sides. People of influence that come with their own smaller forces and budgets, and are force multipliers for their respective factions in battle. Your relative power and amount of orders is tied to you rank inside the faction. They have 3 orders per turn and 1 order per mini.

Rank 3 players are notable pilots and aces, but lack the backing to do much other then intervene in fights, they may have singular regimental sized forces behind them to represent specialist units. They get 1 order per MINI turn, and can elect to join any one battle occurring during a mini regardless of their location last turn.

Rank 2 players are middle of the road, individual admirals and generals, or very dangerous aces. They have more troops to command and may be able to afford one or two independent research projects. They get 1 order per turn and 2 orders per Mini, can be involved in any number of battles occurring at their force's current location.

Rank 1 players are major members of their factions, grand admirals and generals, major politicians, or nobility. They can contribute significant forces to whatever the leaders plans are, and can act as sort of 'mini' leaders in that they have the budget to greatly help their faction, or drastically harm it if a Rank 1 player decides he might want to try forming his own faction... They get 2 Orders per Turn, and 2 orders per Mini, can be involved in any number of battles occurring in a mini if their troops are present.

Factions:

United Earth Government:
Strengths: Super Prototype: To make up for their lack of reserach in the last few years, the UEG scientists are quite eager to produce the best of the best, despite the costs. More likely to produce 'super prototype' models when doing research.
Earthian Manpower: The UEG has significant manpower reserves due to controlling the homeworld, and rarely has to worry about running out.
Weaknesses: Behind the Times: The UEG has been neglecting it's armed forces for years, as such while large, it starts with drastically out of date equipment and a near complete lack of Walking Armour models.

Independent Colonial League:
Strengths: Advanced Military: The colonies have been preparing for this war in secret for some time. They start with up to date equipment and significant quantities of Walking Armour.
Designed for Everyone: The ICL scientists have their heads screwed on a bit firmer, and in general look to design equipment that can serve as a new baseline model and then upgrade off that. More likely to produce 'Grunt' models when doing research.
Weaknesses: Weak Industry: Being mostly space based, the ICL lacks the gigantic factory cities of the UEG. This means they need to make good choices on what they produce, as they won't be able to afford as many.

Combat:

Combat in this game is done similar to World in Revolution but with more 'hard' numbers involved to represent the power of specific forces. Combat occurs during the mini stages when two sides have forces on or above the same planet. At this point each side's forces combat points are totaled and players are given the option to join in to help influence a battle.

For example, if during Turn 3, the ICL leader orders the 3 following regiments to attack the UEG controlled Moon, this would be how it would appear.

ICL Invasion of the Moon
Attackers (ICL)
2nd Walking Armour Regiment (Zapa MK Is) 2600 cbp
33rd Armoured (Jovian MBT) 1600 cbp
101st Infantry (Basic Equipment) 800 cbp
Total: 5000 cbp

Defenders (UEG):
3rd Armoured (MT-77) 1450 cbp
4th Armoured (MT-77) 1450 cbp
6th Infantry (Basic Equipment) 800 cbp
7th Infantry (Basic Equipment) 800 cbp
Total: 4500 cbp

If left to its own accord, the ICL likely will win this battle (not garunteed, but most likely will.) Players will have the option of putting their character and forces to this battle. For Rank 3 and 1 players, they can do this regardless of where they were last turn. For Rank 2 players, they must have spent their normal order to move their force to the same location as the battle. (So talk to your leaders or other Rank 2s!) These players will be able to influence the point totals and potentially change how the battle would go.

Equipment also has a major effect in a units fighting ability. As you can see above, the equipment of each regiment is tracked. An armoured regiment without tanks for example, is no better then basic infantry. While in some cases, a single super prototype could be worth as much as an entire regiment. This is why you want to always be conducting research to get better equipment for your regiments.

Research and Super Prototypes:

F
or each research order you have specific branches you can focus on.

The five branches of research are:
Space Ships
Walking Armour (a.k.a Mechs)
AFV/Tanks
Infantry
Special

When you select a branch in your order you can then select what your looking for. For example, you want an upgrade on the current model (cheaper to produce and easier to a point to do, but less likely to be a major upgrade in terms of cbp) or a full new model (going to require more time and resources to work on, but more likely to be drastically improved.) Depending on what you ask for, I will then give you a response of potential options. For example.

Player 1 is a Rank 1 player and wants to produce an upgraded version of ICL's Zapa model Walking Armour. He more specifically wants an upgrade, not a new model. So I go to the research department and come back with these options for him. (Note, just cause you wanted an upgrade model or a new production type, does not mean all options will be that)

Zapa Model IB 2700 cbp, Cost Per Regiment: 100
'Super Prototype' Zardnic 4500 cbp, Cost Per One: 500

As you can see, the cost and cbp are not linear. Some lines are obviously going to be worse then others, sometimes worse models are indeed just worse, sometimes though they could lead to much stronger options later down the line. Other times you might get something listed as a 'Super Prototype.' These models tend to have extreme power and cost, like the Zardnic. These units are SINGULAR each time they are built. They are capable of doing significant damage, but Super Prototypes are tracked differently as they cost resources to maintain, can't capture and hold planets on their own, and similar to Rank 2 players, must actually be present at a battlefield to take action there. As you can see, the Zardnic costs as much as 5 Zapa Model IB regiments but at the same time, could take on by its own, 3 UEG armoured regiments. The way to get around a Super Prototypes location requirement, is to give it to a Rank 3 player, who will be able to use it wherever needed during a given turn, but at the same time whose to say they won't take it and run, or use it as part of a rebellion.

The amount of 'options' you get from research depends on who is doing it. If it's a Rank 2 player, they will receive 1, and very rarely 2 successes. For Rank 1s, its possible for 1 or 2 results to occur with regularity, and a 3rd is possible. For Leaders, they have a high chance of getting 3 results.

Important Setting Lore for Era 1:

Now in bullet point format for easier reading.
-There are no aliens.
-Walking Armour is viable thanks to the discovery of an compound that is able to make long range targeting near impossible.
-The Antarctic Treaty from Gundam is being carried over. This treaty states
  • The use of nuclear, biological or chemical weapons is prohibited.
  • Dropping space colonies or large asteroids onto Major Planets is prohibited.
  • All prisoners of war must be treated humanely (although forced labor may be legal).
  • All neutral territories must be respected and combat operations in these regions are prohibited.
-The UEG is controlled by a democracy, though it has a militaristic bent and has emergency powers for the duration of the conflict. (See, Halo's United Nation Government for something similar.)
-ICL to start is something like the Confederacy from the ACW. Each colony is independent, but are united under an emergency federal government for the duration of the conflict at least. Whether they unify further or not is up to the players.
-All non-Tier 3 characters can only move forces 6 tiles a turn.

This is the main gameplay thread. All goes well I'm hoping this game will move on a faster pace then the likes of World in Revolution, instead of once every one or two weeks, we're looking at one update every 4 days hopefully. As such, the first set of orders will be due Sunday the 6th, with the update hopefully coming out on the 7th or 8th.

ICs will give small boosts to your rolls for the turn if relevant to your actions either from the previous turn or your orders for the turn.

To help with conversation and the like, I've made an IRC room for the game.

To join, go through Mibbit or your preferred client, select the 'The Airlock' IRC server and then join the #Mechglory room.

The New Century begun with the first proper colonization of the outer solar system, the first terraforming projects of Europa and Titan. Hailed as an era of progress for humanity, an era of cheerful colonists taming the new frontier. Unfortunately, the New Century slowly became corrupted by greed and disdain. The United Earth Government's rule was long, and they had forgotten lessons of the past. What started as incentives for the colonists in the form of supplies and land turned into taxation without representation. Many political parties of various stripes came into power and fell out of it but none stood for the colonies further then with lip service.

The first tremors of discontent hit in Deimos in NC 76. What started as peaceful protests quickly turned into armed insurrection when UEG garrison forces took a heavy handed approach to the protests.

shadowrun_riot_control_police_and_walker_mech_by_raben_aas-dal1snk.jpg

UEG Riot Control officers at Deimos during the protests.
While the Deimos rebellion was soon put down, it started the chain of events that would lead to the birth of the Independent Colonial League. Similar suppression tactics employed against protesters at Ganymede and Io in NC 85 and 92, would continue to boost the colonialist mindset that the UEG was never going to allow them any sort of political representation or independence for the outer rim colonies.

Finally in the 94th year of the New Century the revolution came. A conglomerate of different independence groups struck. On colonies across the outer rim either peaceful, or violent insurrection quickly seized control of the colonies with the support of the public. The UEG Outer Rim fleet defected to the new forces, along with many locally raised units, giving the newly formed ICL a rather significant military base, backed by equipment and manpower designed, built, and trained in secret or under the eyes of bribed UEG officials. War is now inevitable, it's just a question of where the first battles will happen.

Feel free to post now.

Worlds Changing
Benjamin took his first steps onto the alien world of Callisto, leaving behind the safety of his highly defended transport craft. Granted near complete autonomy by Earth's government, he had decided to visit the moon before the ravages of war took over the minds of its people. However, as he looked around him, he only saw those who were weary and those who were afraid. People dashed through the streets, making way for gangs of grim faced soldiers, exhausted engineers and mechanics reinforced the moon's defenses, even the government's often cheery propaganda seemed worn and tired. As he dined at one of the local cafes, Benjamin reminisced his first journey to the moon. Some ten years back, Benjamin had visited the world on a whim, finding the people welcoming and friendly. However, the tense atmosphere alone had hardened the once friendly people, and who knew what effect actual combat would have. He made a resolution to himself that he would end the war quickly, to prolong it would mean only more unjust suffering.

Diary of G. Actura
It seems that war is guaranteed. I was at the meeting on [Rhea] Station and the vote was near unanimous in favour of joining the ICL. Those that were opposed were allowed to keep their vote and their items, but stripped from military duty and of "elements of danger". While some question the Station Head's decision, the defense of Rhean democracy was comforting. The newly declared Republic [of Rhea Station] would be a constitute member of the [ICL].

As a mechanised pilot, I was privately conferred with in order to ensure my loyalty to the cause, of which I noted my loyal service for years upon years. Although the Station Head was obviously not completely convinced, I remain unphased. I shall serve the station with distinction.

I suspect I will be ordered out soon, and hold a modicum of worry. Our armour is strong, but the Terrans are crazy. Although I do hear that the ruler of Titan is some wannabe aristo spacer who gave himself a series of titles. This is going to be a long war I suspect.

Executive Mansion, Federal Capital Region, Earth

The Outer Colonies had broken their chains and were moving away from the pull of Earth's gravity. The Terran political establishment was caught off guard due to their usual stupor when it came to colonial affairs. The recent campaign for United Earth President had sucked up all the oxygen and whatever limited attention spans Earth's elite could muster. In some ways the war was Trunicht's salvation. The more serious members of the Nationalist movement had proven entirely inadequate in government and a constant source of embarrassment. The partisans of his electoral rival, Chelsea Warren, continued to hound the administration in both the media and on the floor of the legislature. War with the colonies would provide a convenient distraction and allow Trunicht to pivot from his mixed record on domestic affairs to becoming a wartime president.

His briefings from the General Staff were not encouraging. His intelligence chief, Admiral Dwight Greenhill, gave a sobering report on the state of the the United Earth Space Forces and gave context to rumors of defections among colonial pilots in the Outer Regions. More encouraging was a report from his National Security Advisor, João Rebelo, on the unveiling of a new walker prototype. In spite of the clear and present danger represented by the rebels there was a not insubstantial voice in the legislature that preached economies in fighting the rebellion. These old guardists underestimated the potency of the rebel arsenal and the seriousness of the emergency.

Resisting the attempts of the old guard to enforce economies, the President ordered the convening of a war cabinet to manage the direction of the campaign. Civilian control of the military establishment would be enforced and Admiral Frederick Jasper dispatched to the sector commanders to remind them of their duty to remain in contact with Earth.

Ganymede Station

Jad Attlee ascended to the stage with slow, purposeful steps. As he approached the podium a hundred conversations all died at once, leaving in their wake an even more deafening silence. A newcomer might have mistaken the quiet for military discipline, but Jad knew better: his men wanted to hear every word.

After taking a few moments to cast his gaze about the crowded hangar, Jad cleared his throat and began to speak.

“My friends, my fellow freedom fighters, the first phase of our long-awaited revolution has finally arrived! No longer must we lonely warriors aimlessly wander the dark void of space, forever forced to fight for a quixotic cause. No longer must we hoist the flag of freedom alone! Hundreds of thousands of brave men, women and children have answered the call and risen up across the system to join our crusade, marking what could only be one of the great, pivotal moments in the history of our species.

“We do not begrudge them for being slow to wake from their civil slumber, for we know it has long been the policy of Earth to ensure that their colonial subjects are blindered and bridled by ignorance, bred to accept their oppression as merely the natural state of things; instead, we celebrate their belated epiphanies and welcome them with open arms. While we, the Dead Man Battalion, might fight and struggle past the point of total defeat and certain annihilation, it is only alongside the people of the outer planets that we can ever hope to achieve a true, lasting victory. As the people of Ganymede and Europe, Io and Rhea, Dione and Tethys lend their voices to the choir of freedom, it will not be long before our brethren on Callisto and Lysithea, Deimos and Phobos, and even Mars come to see that our revolution is just and worthy of their support.

“However, while this might be the first glorious chapter of our Revolution, it is also the one most fraught with danger. In the coming war, we must take care never to skirt death or danger, but rather strive to plunge into battle with fury on our lips and courage in our hearts – for if we stumble or stall, if we lose our momentum, we are doomed. Many will die. Many will suffer. All will witness firsthand the horrors of war. But it is only after a nightmare that we may wake and live our lives free of fear, free from the chains which bind us and hold us down.

“For those foolish souls who still seek to avoid war in favor of yet more hollow diplomacy and pointless discussion, I have only this to say: when faced with an enemy who does not afford you the respect he feels entitled to, an enemy who refuses to grant you the privileges he takes for granted, an enemy who barely sees you as human … there can be no diplomacy. There can be no discussion. There can be no peaceful negotiation. Our enemy responds only to strength, and so we will show him strength. Our enemy speaks only in violence, and so we will become more fluent in that blood-soaked tongue than he ever was or could be.

“Then, and only then, will he acknowledge our plight and bend to our righteous will. Then, and only then, will we have peace. And not merely peace, but a just peace – the only kind that matters.”

As the hangar erupted into cheers and familiar chants, Jad turned to the man standing just to his side.

“A great speech, Jad” Mikel said, smiling.

“I've dreamed of giving it for years. I never thought I actually would see the day.”

"Neither did I,” his friend replied, clapping him on the shoulder, “but life can be surprising, eh? At long last, we finally have our war. Our revolution.”

Jad nodded grimly.

“Now we just have to win it.”

Excerpts from President Trunicht's speech proclaiming a State of Emergency;

truniht.jpg

"I've been told by experts and these are the best experts, on everything within the Earth sphere, and they tell me that this so-called Independent Colonial League group is just slightly to the right of Attila the Hun; they hate freedom, breathe oppression, and exhale tyranny.

"Let me tell you beautiful people of the Earth sphere, read my lips and believe me that we stand behind you and your livelihoods and are making all preparations necessary to put down this vile rebel treachery. We will act in affirmative support of democracy and universal values of peace, love, justice, and other stuff and it's common sense that armed rebellion doesn't jive with peace, order, and good government.

"This rebellion is a complete omnishambles and is going to rebound on all of those who side with it. You can't govern a country indefinitely at the point of a gun and that is precisely what these rebels are doing. We only need to look at the events on Titan; this self-proclaimed Grand Dunce Friedrich is atrocious, a tinpot despot with a poor track record at being a team player. While I can't share with you his service record since it's against Alliance policy to do so, i've read it and let me tell you previous folks letting him continue in uniform is just another reason why we need to drain the swamp and clean up our United Earth political and military establishment. I bet the the colonial rebels were so afraid of our Terran movement that they decided to fight to keep their ill-gotten gains. They're low energy, especially this Grand Dunce Friedrich fellow. We're going to crush them and no matter how long it takes we're going to finish the job properly.

"The choice here is clear, Earth stands for democracy and measured political development. The Rebels stand for serfdom and enslavement. Do you want more freedom or do you want more folks like Gran Dunce Friedrich of Titan to tell you folks what to do? You're already tired of bureaucrats bossing you around--making you have to sign endless reams of inane paperwork to get the government services that are rightfully yours by virtue of being a taxpayer--and now these Rebels want to rob you of your rights as taxpayers and make you all medieval peons in some themepark-land dystopia thought up by some fools cosplaying as duke of this or that. The choice is clear folks, the choice is clear; Earth is freedom, the Rebellion is serfdom.

"The fundamental question of our time is whether our blue Earth has the will to survive. Do we have the confidence in our values to defend them at any cost? Do we have enough respect for our citizens to protect our blue Earth? Do we have the desire and the courage to preserve our civilization in the face of those who would subvert and destroy it?

"By virtue of my power as President of the Federation and Commander-in-Chief of our Self Defense Forces, I order a full mobilization to put down the rebellion and issue a declaration of military rule in all areas affected by the current rebellion. This State of Emergency is to last until we have inevitably put down this illegal and dastardly revolt. Remember what is at stake; Earth is freedom, the Rebellion is serfdom.

"May the blessings of Divine Providence shine upon you all as we grasp the shield and take up the sword against the rebellion!"

- New Partner -
"Kenny Blackwood!" someone shouts. Kenny walks to the door of his spacecraft. He sees the admiral of the Uranus Station's Fleet. What does he want this time?

"Yes sir" Kenny answers. The admiral doesn't really like Kenny: in his opinion Kenny is a filthy smuggler who volunteered just to become famous pilot, not to achieve independence for the ICL. And the admiral isn't absolutely wrong. Kenny doesn't care that much who is in charge of the planets, as long as he is allowed to trade after the war.

The admiral takes a breath and tells his news. "I have decided to give you a partner. You will be able to get much more done with a co-pilot. One of you controls the craft, while the other one shoots."

Kenny wasn't against that. A co-pilot could be really helpful. "Where is this partner of me then? I want to talk to them."

"I told him to come to your ship as soon as possible. Don't be impatient" The admiral tells and walks away. It seems like he has better stuff to do than chat with Kenny.

Kenny sits down on the steps of his spacecraft. He looks around the hangar. Most of the crafts are smaller than his. That's obvious: the others are made purely for fighting. What Kenny's ship is missing in smallness, it compensates with fastness and a high firing rate.

Kenny is miles away. He doesn't even notice the man walking up to him. Finally when this man introduces himself, Kenny stops dreaming.
"Hi brother! I am Erik, your new co-pilot."

Kenny quickly stands up and takes a look at his partner. "Erik, eh?" Kenny walks really close to him and whispers: "Even though that admiral made you my co-pilot, you are under my control, okay? This is my ship, I am the boss."

Erik steps back and nods. "As you say." He looks at Kenny's ship and continues: "Nice spacecraft you got there. Could you show me the inside of it?"

Kenny smirks. Hopefully his co-pilot will remember who's the boss. "Yeah sure, come inside and take a look."

THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT OF THE EUROPAN REPUBLIC TO THE EUROPIAN PEOPLE

PEOPLE OF EUROPA

In the name of Sant Babra and of the dead generations from which her sons and daughters have given their toil, Europa, through us, summons her children to her roundel and strikes for her freedom.

Having organised and trained her citizenry through her secret revolutionary organisation, the Europian's Republican Army, and through her open military organisations, the Europian Volunteers and the Europan Citizen Army, having patiently perfected her discipline, having resolutely waited for the right moment to reveal itself, she now seizes that moment, and supported by her sibling peoples across the Solar System and by gallant allies in the ICL, but relying in the first on her own strength, she strikes in full confidence of victory.

We declare the right of the people of Europa to the ownership of Europa and to the unfettered control of Europian destinies, to be sovereign and indefeasible. The long usurpation of that right by a foreign people and government has not extinguished the right, nor can it ever be extinguished except by the destruction of the Europian people. In every generation the Europian people have asserted their right to national freedom and sovereignty; six times during the past one hundred years they have asserted it in arms. Standing on that fundamental right and again asserting it in arms in the face of the world, we hereby proclaim the Europan Republic as a Sovereign State, and we pledge our lives and the lives of our comrades in arms to the cause of its freedom, of its welfare, and of its exaltation among the nations.

The Europan Republic is entitled to, and hereby claims, the allegiance of every Europian. The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and of all its parts, cherishing all of the children of the nation equally, and oblivious of the differences carefully fostered by an alien Government, which have divided a minority from the majority in the past.

Until our arms have brought the opportune moment for the establishment of a permanent National Government, representative of the whole people of Europa and elected by the suffrages of all her men and women, the Provisional Government, hereby constituted, will administer the civil and military affairs of the Republic in trust for the people.

Signed on behalf of the Provisional Government:
President-Guvanar Saymus Koloné

The Rhean Flag

The flag of the Republic of Rhea Station was an ugly one, perhaps due in part by the lack of actual artists on the Station. Voted and past soon after the declaration of secession against the Terran Government, what is first seen as a roundel is actually a circular flag. In the center lies the small moon of Rhea, while the middle is the vast gas giant of Saturn and the outermost rim is the vast blackness of space. Although a simplistic effort, and often mocked within ICL formations (especially during leave when alcohol is involved) the Rheans are for the most part content with their little piece of 'art', if not proud. However, those that rally against the Republic and stayed loyal to Earth often use it as a highlighted point regarding the fundamental mistake of the ICL and the war as a whole.

"Gentlemen, we face a threat the likes of which humanity has never seen before. The entire epoch of human history has been a long, some times tumultuous, path to unity and stability. After millennia of progress, the great dream, that of a single, unified government representing all the people of the Earth, was reached with the creation of the United Earth Government. At long last, a new era might begin, where man stands together, shoulder to shoulder with brothers, regardless of ethnicity, race, religion, or belief. Free from the strife of division, free from the waste of nationalism and conflict, we might reach the true potential of humanity, furthering the prosperity of all people through expansion to the stars.

And so it was for many a decade. With great optimism, our brightest minds and bravest souls spread humanity to the stars, terraforming mars and moons across the solar system, creating artificial habitats as far away as Neptune. Across billions of miles the reach of humanity grew. New lives were started by people from every corner of the Earth, hoping to grasp a hold of a bright future as the vanguard of humanity's expansion into space. These were years of peace, of hope, of prosperity. I remember them well, as do countless others. Never before had humanity stood so tall.

But some were not content with such prosperity. Some greedy degenerates, distant from the lenient hand of mother Earth, questioned why they should share prosperity they found with those who remained behind. Believing themselves above laws, and beyond authority, they resisted their duty as citizens to the greater good of humanity. These individuals, consumed by lust for personal power, agitated against the benevolent and lenient rule of the United Earth. Crimes against the armed forces of the United Earth and citizens sympathetic to it skyrocketed in the outer colonies. On Europa, on Titan, on Io, and on Ganymede, the incredible ambitions of a few men birthed a conspiracy.

These men, those who now lead the so-called 'Independent Colonial League' have no interest in the wellbeing of common people, either on Earth of in the colonies. Green with envy over the bountiful resources sent back to the Earth from the outer colonies, shared in the cause of greater humanity, they sought to create independent fiefdoms in the outer limits to turn their production capacity and wealth to their own luxurious benefit. Some have more subtly taken up these positions than others. The current despot of Titan, styling himself 'Grand Duke' as if this were the medieval dark ages, is the least subtle of them, making no effort to hide that his part in the rebellion is nothing more than his own personal pursuit of power and dictatorship.

The other members of the rebellion's leadership is little better, committing atrocities against loyal members of the United Earth Government in the name of such outdated concepts as nationalism and aristocracy. The wealth they deceitfully accumulated by exploiting the workers of the outer colonies and stealing from the innocent citizens of Earth was used by them to conduct the most appalling action seen in over a century. Through contact with the officers of the fleets and commands in the outer colonies, a treacherous conspiracy of bribery was conducted. Lining their own pockets with ill gotten credits, disloyal traitors in the outer fleets betrayed their commanders, murdered loyalists, and turned over their ships and weapons to the 'cause' of the rebellion.

These events did not happen overnight. For many years these plans were carried out and wealth stolen. The overly kind hand of Earth is what allowed these events to transpire. Again and again warning signs were pushed aside and downplayed, hoping that if the colonies were allowed greater amounts of freedom they would be content to recognize what quickly became only nominal Earth authority. Such a policy was misguided from the beginning considering the insatiable appetite of the warmongers in the leadership of the rebellion, who will not be content until they have Earth and Mars under their jackboots. The policy of appeasement and stagnation now leaves the United Earth outgunned and outnumbered against the extensively prepared armies of the rebellion.

But they have erred my comrades. They think their preparations, their ships, their machines, and their propaganda will defeat us, forcing the subjugation of the free and innocent people on Earth, on Mars, on Luna, on Callipso, and more. They underestimate the will of our soldiers, of our proud citizens. Today, they might have the edge in power, but their cause is a charade, and their industry and population could never match the power of Earth, Mars, and the other colonies still loyal to the legitimate government on Earth. Already our factories have been mobilized to produce vehicles and ships to drown out the rebels, and our scientists are well under way in producing new, powerful, and terrifying weapons of war. Our cause is just, our people are united, and our capacity for military power is superior. Though the early days of the war may soon be dark, remember that final victory is certain, and there can be no doubt that the rebellion will eventually be brought to justice, and the oppressed colonials of the outer system will be liberated.

Once humanity stood united, and so long as I draw breath, I will see to it with all my strength that it is united once again."

-Speech by Admiral-Commandant Joshua Tomino to the United Earth Military following the outbreak of hostilities with the rebels

The Flag of Titan
Conceptualized shortly after Friedrich I's declaration of Titan as its own independent Grand Duchy, the flag of Titan borrows ideas from flags and symbols of centuries past, as well as new ones. Off-center to the left is a stylized version of the Titan's planet, Saturn. In the top left is the astrological symbol for Titan, which was created shortly after the moon's discovery in the 17th century. As homage to the Grand Duke's Germanic heritage and Unitary Christian faith, there is a black-white Nordic cross, similar to that of the Old Terran nations of Norway or Sweden. Finally, the flag has an orange field, which represents the orange nitrogen-rich atmosphere of Titan before it was terraformed and colonized. As a symbol of Titanite independence, the citizens of the Grand Duchy are proud of their flag, with many a Titanite proudly flying the flag outside their home.*

*Rumors that flag flying is mandatory under punishment of forced labor are purely UEG propaganda.

A Brief Military History of the Independent Colonial League

The Independent Colonial League, a coalition of various independence movements along a broad spectrum of ideologies, was for a long time underestimated and in some circles even considered a non-entity by United Earth Government officials. So it came as a near total surprise to outside observers that in a short amount of time this "rag-tag alliance" was able to create a fighting force able challenge, and in some areas even surpass, a state that had since then been the sole military power in the solar system. Upon closer examination, however, these developments become less surprising and perhaps even an eventuality.

The first notable factor was the state of UEG's military itself. After its establishment as the single ruling government in the solar system, public interest and practicality in military development steadily declined due to the fact that there was simply no one to deploy it against. Due to this, the UEG military was relegated to acting as peacekeepers and interplanetary law enforcement while funding was cut and progress on many research and development projects slowed. This issue was in hindsight viewed by many to be a critical misstep that wasn't corrected or even acknowledged until well after the ICL's own military build up had kicked into full swing.

The colonies during this time had not been idle. Contrary to the belief of many officials in the UEG, the ICL's military capacity did not appear over night but had been an investment of large amounts of time and recourses. Many militant separatist and anti-UEG groups had existed and attempted to launch uprisings in the past only to be quickly crushed by local garrisons or a dedicated military response. What made the ICL and its member organizations different from these past attempts was their ability to coordinate and exert influence over a wider area. This opened the door to new possibilities not before open to separatist movements.

One of these new opportunities was the ability to conduct its own independent weapon development. While the UEG's commitment of funding and recourses to military development might have dwindled, interests among other sectors still remained. Private companies and in some cases particularly intelligent individuals developed designs for upgraded versions of current UEG ships and equipment as well completely new technology, including the initial prototype designs for Walking Armor models, only to have them be rejected by the government and military officials as "unnecessary" and "a waste of recourses". The result was many weapon designs and disgruntled researchers and engineers floating around unutilized. Eventually, many of these were picked up by the ICL through theft, bribery and covert recruitment. The ICL began using the designs to produce their own equipment in secret, making necessary adjustments and "ironing the kinks" out of the designs.

Using a network of sympathizers and embedded operatives, ICL cells began siphoning supplies and scavenging necessary components and initiated a covert military build up. The production entirely compartmentalized, with no individual having complete knowledge of the various workings of each cell and most being ignorant of the other cells very existences. Hidden caches and facilities were set up to store the equipment to store until the signal was given to rise up.

When the signal came it happened rapidly. The ICL's extensive preparations combined the low popularity of the UEG in the outer planets meant that local garrisons found themselves seriously out matched when the uprisings occurred. Forces who had until then only had to contend with small isolated incidents were now up against a prepared and committed enemy who used military grade equipment and new and advanced weaponry. On top of this, they faced popular revolt and mass defections from their own ranks. Resistance had quickly disintegrated and colonial administrations were overthrown in incredibly public and in some locations even bloodless affairs*.

No event better illustrated the extent and effectiveness of the ICL's plan than the defection of the Outer Rim Fleet. Seen as the symbol of the UEG authority in colonies, the Outer Rim Fleet played a prominent role in the suppression campaign conducted against colonial dissidents. This made the fleet a priority target in eyes of the ICL. While it was docked at Uranus Station for maintenance, the sympathizers among the fleet's crew and junior officers staged a widespread mutiny, taking control of the crucial areas on the ships and arresting most of the senior officers. At the same time, Uranus station was placed under ICL control with no resistance. The mutineers then allowed ICL privateers to board the ships, securing the largest fleet in the Outer Rim.

With their own territories secure the ICL moved quickly to prepare for the inevitable UEG military response. The amount of time it took for information to travel back to Earth, as well as the shock of the events themselves had bought the ICL several days to prepare for the conflict. In that time militias were raised, additional weapons were produced, and supplies were stockpiled. Maintenance facilities were converted into make-shift shipyards and a loose hierarchy was established. In preparation for a war that would decide the course of human history.

*With the notable exception of Titan whose situation was more unique

The XT Program

The development of Walking Armor was long ignored by the central command of the United Earth Military. Failing to see the need for further weapons development given the unification of humanity, an experimental weapon system with dubious battlefield necessity was widely derided whenever proposed. Civilian bipedal mechanical units had long existed for industrial work and major cargo movement, but the military had little interest in creating a bipedal combat unit. Even with the discovery of the Valenski Compound and its radar jamming effects bringing an end to effective long range weaponry, most in the high command resisted Walking Armor, calling it nothing more than a product of science fiction.

In the outer colonies, no such limitation was imposed. Rich in resources, but lacking in manpower, the combat capabilities of Walking Armor were seen as an important leveling factor by the future leadership of the ICL in their planned rebellion against Earth. Using shell companies and dubious claims of civilian purpose, the Walking Armors of the ICL were constructed secretly in the years prior to their rebellion.

Though most on Earth rushed off unsubstantiated reports about the military build-up in the colonies, one man would respond by make a daring break with the existing policy of the United Earth Military. Admiral-Commandant Joshua Tomino had long argued to his colleagues that the outer colonies were going to rebel, and major war preparations were needed, causing many to label him paranoid. Accounts of Walking Armor construction in the outer colonies would cause Admiral-Commandant Tomino to throw his support behind the long gesting idea of a military use Walking Armor. Though high command did not suddenly change its stance overnight, the combined influence of the Admiral-Commandant and many leading weapons designers convinced them to approve the construction of a prototype unit, to test the combat potential of a Walking Armor prior to any major production.

Though a prototype production was less than they had hoped for, Admiral-Commandant Tomino and the lead researchers decided to make the best of what they had, and soon got to work designing the walker and acquiring resources. Due to the Admiral-Commandant's position, and the ample open space of Mars, it was decided the project would be operated on Mars. Great secrecy was also sought for the project, to prevent possible sabotage of the program, necessitating an isolated facility for the project, which was easily furnished thanks to the Admiral-Commandant.

Due to several debates on the design of the Walker, progress was very limited for the first month of the program. Irritated over the stagnation of the project, Admiral-Commandant Tomino ordered the design team to begin the creation of a working model for their prototype. He was convinced that the deadlock between the researchers could be broken through practical application, by learning from the flaws shown by the initial prototype. The researcher resisted, fearing that the creation of a sub-par prototype would see the plug pulled on the whole project, but the Admiral-Commandant assured them that he would keep the project alive, provided they showed progress on improving upon any sub-par prototype.

The first prototype, designated XT-01 (eXperimental Test unit 01), would have four legs and its "arms" were nothing more than weapons. Believing this would provide greater stability and weapon capacity than a bipedal design, more convention minds had prevailed over the radical designers, who wished for a bipedal design, as was rumoured to be adopted by the rebels in the outer colonies. The XT-01 proved a failure, with weak mobility from its many legs, and its weapon arms being prone to jamming and having difficulty in the reloading process. The radical designers took this as confirmation their ideas were correct, and they would take over further development, with Admiral-Commandant Tomino's blessing.

The new bipedal design, the XT-02, would quickly be developed, learning from the errors of the XT-01. Construction of the model would soon follow, to test it and conduct trials to work out errors in its design. Unlike the XT-01, the XT-02 would have great success in the military trials, proving itself more than capable of taking on an entire battalion of tanks by itself. Even skeptical observers from Earth High Command were impressed by the XT-02's capabilities, and word soon spread of possibility to begin mass production of the weapon, though various production quirks and system requirements made the XT-02 incredibly expensive to produce, though many were confident that the cost of similar units could be lowered in the future.

Unfortunately, the ICL began its rebellion in earnest shortly after the Walking Armor program was approved for official support by the United Earth Military. With it now made abundantly clear that the ICL had numerous Walking Armor units at their disposal, the XT-02 was pressed into official military service as a stopgap measure until more production friendly models could be developed. Major Steven Riddle, commander of the 13th Autonomous Corps, and experienced special forces operators was given the XT-02 by Admiral-Commandant Tomino, due to his great trust in the combat record and abilities of Major Riddle. Given a crash course on piloting the XT-02, Major Riddle quickly proved a natural with the machine, with some of his men reporting they'd rather have the Major in the XT-02 backing them up than a whole division of infantry.

With the outbreak of rebellion and war threatening to consume all of humanity once again, it remains to be seen if the XT-02, and the Walking Armor project as a whole, will be a decisive war winner, or a costly money-sink that only distracted from more useful conventional weapons.

Baby Steps
The soldiers were milling about in the hallway, the chatter was the usual talk of the coming conflict and the marching orders coming out of Earth. One of the troopers had a portable device in his hand, surrounded by several others as they all eyed President Trunich's state of emergency. Whatever they were feeling, their faces showed little. The voices could be heard right outside his door as Major Riddle was still gathering his things, sleep was hell and his best solution was a warm cup of coffee imported straight from Earth. It was steaming away at his desk as he desperately looked for his old man's pocket watch. It was a momento that brought him luck, not that he was superstitious. Finally locating it in one of the drawers buried by bureaucratic nonsense he grabbed his cap displaying his rank as well as his lifeline. Placing his hat on and taking a quick sip he grabbed the door knob and twisted smirking at the sound of all the men standing attention.

With a casual salute the men shuffled behind him, like a shepard leading his flock, heading for the briefing room. The men took their seats while Riddle stood at the podium beginning the day's brief. The large flag symbolizing the United Earth Government hanged proudly behind him.

"All right gentlemen, by now you've already got the news of the conflict to come. For those of you living under a rock," some of the men chuckled with a couple of smart mouthed comments quickly silenced with the Major's grunt. "A state of emergency has been declared and the 13th Autonomous Corps is to prepare to move out. However, we have been chosen to field a new weapon. A..." Riddle paused for a moment.

"A XT-02. A Walking Armor to be precise. The first. I have also been chosen to be its pilot. We are the tip of the spear men. We cannot let the people of Earth and humanity itself down. The quicker we win this war, the quicker the peace can return and humanity can continue its prosperity and advancement. We will give these rebels no quarter. We didn't start this but you can bet we will finish it."

Hoots and whistling was heard as Major Riddle dismissed the men. As the soldiers filed out of the room and the building itself, as if on cue there it was. The machine was at least 10 stories high, laying on its back on a gigantic flatbed truck being slowly hauled into a rather large hanger. The research and development team had already arrived and before the Major knew it, he was already in his specialized pilot suit.

RX78.JPG

The suit hugged the skin making it a rather tight fit, its fabrics were a navy blue color with yellow trimmings. His helmet too was a matching color with a clear visor, at his special request the side of the helmet was emblazoned with the 13th Corps symbol: A mysterious Red slitted eye, it almost looked reptilian.

The inside of the cockpit was a sight to see, buttons, switches and levers were all aorund him with carefully calibrated instruments measuring all sorts of data which included but was not limited to weight distribution, ammo stores, sensors, communication and even energy levels. On the outside Stephen was calm and collected but inside he was quite intimidated by this.

"Major Riddle, this is Thomas Jorgen, the head of the R&D team behind the XT-02. I hope the suit isn't too tight on you. Consider it an honor to be the first UEG pilot to fly a Walking Armor in the battle. That is once you learn to use it, of course." By now the XT-02 was upright, engaged and awaiting orders from its pilot. Straight ahead were the hanger doors with the rest of the Mars base beyond the metal threshold.

"No problem. It's like driving a tank. Once you learn you never forget!" His attempt at humor fell flat. Silenced reigned until the console chirped with an incoming transmission.

"This is Command Tower, all inbound and outbound traffic has been halted. Security forces are in place and you're green to begin Major. Good luck."

"Now keep in mind today you are merely getting acquainted with your HUD and console. You will test the XT-02's mobility and thrusters today. Your ammunition was not loaded on so no...curiosity on your end Major."

Stephen chuckled. "Oh do I look like the type to do that Jorgen?"

"Just a precaution. Command is requesting you identify yourself by your call-sign."

latest

Tapping both feet on the metallic petals below and finally grasping both joysticks to his left and right, albeit gingerly, Riddle drew a deep breathe and answered looking over the diagnostics one last time. "Call-sign Orion, beginning training exercise." Pressing down with his left foot, he could feel the massive weight of the mechanized walker raise its left leg and slowly move forward. With a loud thud, Stephen wasted no time to do the same with the right foot. Cautious as ever, it took the armored walker a little over a minute to leave the hanger to be greeted by the sunlight. And there it was, the first of it's kind for the United Earth Government. Without waiting for further instruction Riddle took the initiative, pressing on the side buttons of both his left and right joystick. He then immediately pushed forward as a loud rumble was heard outside. Behind him, the roar of the thrusters came to life as the armored walker lurched forward, he felt the machine temporarily lift itself several feet into the air before landing, sounding like a loud crash.

"As you can see Major, you are capable of very limited, thruster assisted jumping. If pressed the right way the machine will-" Yanking back on the handles with both buttons pressed pushed the machine skywards but directly forward. The XT was eloquently gliding over the surface for a few seconds before the thruster boost cut out followed by another loud landing.

"Like that?" The pilot asked, a grin dancing on Riddle's face.

"Yes Major, precisely...like that. It's a boost to your mobility in case you need to..reach something or get away from something really quickly."

"Understood. Like I said, drives like a tank. Except with two legs." Before long Stephen had advanced far enough to not only display quick learning and reaction times but within a mere week proved a natural with the machine utilizing its weapons with increasing accuracy and efficiency. Though not explicit, the men were already whispering asking when were they going to ditch the tanks and fly own of their own XT.

Executive Maison, Federal Capital Region, Earth

"Professor... err Mr. President, i'm not sure why you've called me from Luna. There's a war about to start and there's a lot to be sorted to get the fleet ready sortie," said Baldwin 'Bright' Noa, one Jobst's former interns from his life as an attending physician. "Frankly, i'm not even sure folks remember how to get our battlewagons on point. It's been years since we've had general exercises. Your predecessor's military draw down policy hasn't helped our ability to contain this emergency..."

"I didn't chose this life, Bright. And I can't control how much the former President sucked," replied Jobst with a sigh. "I'm not a orator, I speak my mind and look where I am now. It doesn't help that really 'speaking' your mind is seen by most citizens as a breath of fresh air. At least you can return to medicine whenever you please. You volunteered for fleet duty while i'm over here stuck trying to sort out my uncle's political legacy and ideological philosophy. Most of these ideas are his, as are my political allies, or rather, let's call them handlers. While we were at peace they were content run the show but now half of them are in the corner pissing themselves and other half think they're the next Ibrahim Gannibal or Bruce Ashbey, forgetting both had pretty bad ends

"They're legends, though. The best that humanity had to offer in their era. Peerless strategists. They lived as and left us as heroes."

"Gannibal was baked alive at the Battle of Olympus Mons because someone thought it would be a wonderful idea to use an entire fleet as a homing beacon for a long-range strike to counter jamming particals; sure, the UEG won the battle and the war that day but it was not because Gannibal was a great mind, greater minds just set him up. Ashbey's private life was a mess; imagine that, four wives, four divorces and countless mistresses, he also fought intoxicated. He could've been many times a better commander if not for his personal flaws. He's hardly an inspiration for future generations.

"Look, we ought to know our skills and understand our limits. That's why you're here. Truthfully you've become a better strategist than traumatologist but I still pray you haven't let what happened on Deimos all those years ago cloud your eyes. The Rebels are people too, they make mistakes just like you and I; don't let any propaganda get to your head."

"You're still the same Professor Heinessen I remember from all those years ago, i'm not the same Bright after that medical dispatch to Deimos. I wish I had your ability to forgive," sighed Bright.

"It's Mr. 'Trunicht' now, unfortunately... Forgiveness is one thing, forgetting is another; do not forget to honor their memory.

"In any case, you're here because I need advice on who put in control of the Home Fleet. I can't do it over comms or some arse will leak the details and my advisors will whine. So you're here in person. So lay it on me, who should it be?"

"There is one, Rear Admiral Bewcock," replied Bright.

"Bewcock? He's in his sixties? He served under Baron Warwick all those years ago, same as my Dad and he's enjoying retirement! I thought he would've hung up his hat by now. It's already enough he's risen from a rating to a flag officer with no benefit of academy training or political backing."

"That's why he's your man. He's the only flag officer with the Home Fleet who's seen capital ship-to-capital ship combat. He's the only one in the senior command not jockeying to lead Earth's defenses. Also, I did my first deployment after commissioning on the Rio Grande, it's a fine run ship and the admiral doesn't get too much in the way of her captain."

"Bewcock, eh... it's a choice out of left-field but then again, that's what i'm known for," the President takes out a letter of appointment, signs it, and hands it to Bright. "File this downstairs and then take the original to Fleet Admiral Bewcock. Make sure he understands accepting this assignment is an order that must be obeyed. If he hasn't agitated for this job it means he's a smart man, he knows the odds.

"He knows what a hard slog this is going to be."

Sky_Anywhere_Saturn's-Moon-Tethys_1920x1080.jpg

Tethys. A lifeless little ball of ice, with a tenth of dear old Ganymede's Luna-like gravity and lacking even the meager atmosphere of that Jovian moon. For one who had sailed Ganymede's inner ocean, a nearly solid hunk of ice such as this offered little excitement. Just the constant war of attrition, the day to day struggle for survival and supremacy over the elements. Live combat exercises were an absolute necessity, but a round fired from the main cannon of an MBT would send an improperly dug-in vehicle flying in such a microgravity environment. Keeping the joints of the Walking Armours from freezing was a special challenge during long deployments on the surface. And adjusting infantry to fighting on a planet with such a reflective surface meant training to disregard the visual sensors in their suits and focus on the readouts from the scanning equipment. It wasn't hell but it was a hard place alright.

From: Major Ono, Lysithean Reserve
Subject: Armoured Walkers

Admiral,

With all due respect, our preparations for this war are disgraceful. With the rebels reportedly having several models of Armoured Walkers fielded and ready for combat, we have zero of them beyond the prototype stage. This disaster in military-industrial planning will make it difficult for us to recoup our disadvantages within this vital technological area. Had High Command given us three of those XT-02 prototypes, we could have launched an offensive and taken all the Moons of Jupiter yesterday. While I hold no grudge to you personally for this lack of judgement within the brass, I write this to you in order to make my thoughts on the subject very clear and to convince you that what we need right now is not more conscripts straight up from Earth inside cheap and outdated tanks, but more of these technological marvels that can rule the battlefield with their superior vision and firing range.

Terrain would be a thing of the past; hills, mountains, and fortifications could be bypassed in a single step, and greater pilot-walker integration would only lead to expanded advantages as they can be controlled through pure instinct without the need for bulky indirect controls. Our sacrifices against the rebels will serve as the initial bloodletting of this war, but only by being able to reach a competitive level of technological parity can we be able to hand out lethal blows to the rebel forces. Let me be blunt: We need Armoured Walkers to win, and we definitively need them to survive the coming onslaught.

Ono.
