Coldfront at #GotMO

Welcome! to my first... and hopefully not horribly disastrous last attempt at an OT Forum Game. I s'ppose this may have made more sense two weeks ago rather than now, but meh I'm special like that :p Anyways on to Games of the Olympiad. In this Game you will take the position of leadership of a Nation's Olympic Committee. You will be charged with managing athletic facilities within your nation, budgeting, developing your nations athletic programs, negotiating Advertising Contracts, and potentially presenting city hosting bids. Various statistics (to be worked out) shall determine your monetary capabilities to field larger teams, ensure your athletes have the highest training, and develop Olympic Class facilities.

Step 1: Characters

Just like any other typical OT Game...

Name:
Birth:
Nationality:
Background:
Bio:

Background: Determine what areas you may have a boost in. There are four main backgrounds to choose from

I. Former Athlete-Boosts skill and performance of athletes as well as boosting media popularity. In you past you competed yourself, you felt like the dream would never end, but your aging body said otherwise. You continue the wonder by leading your nation to continued Olympic Glory.
II. Businessman-Boost to budget and general wealth. You are one of your nations leading businessmen, your financial cunning has led you to the top and now, with proper maneuvering and investment you prepare to bring victory for your nation. Also boosts Advertising.
III. Idealist-Boost towards Olympic Bidding. You already have the entire Olympics planned in your head, it's a dream of yours , with majestic Olympic Parks and a Jaw-Dropping Opening Ceremony. Means if you get a bid, the chances of a successful Olympics are very high.
IV. Political Figure-Boost to Government Support and Media Popularity. You are a public officer of your nation and you know performing spectacularly in your post as OC Chair can take you to the next level, maybe even... [INSERT PRESIDENT, PRIME MINISTER, CHANCELLOR, DICTATOR SUPREME, or GENERALLY COOL DUDE]

Step 2: Athletes and Programs

If you want to succeed in the Olympics you'll need Athletes and darn good ones like Phelps, Pluschenko, Bolt, or just about any Dutch guy with Skates. The best way to ensure this is to direct some funds towards Youth Athletic Programs such as Youth Olympics and Tournaments. This process can bring forward to you the best rising Athletes of your nation. You look at their results and determine who shall represent your nation in the coming Olympics. The amount of athletes you have are determined by 2 factors; your Population and Olympic Popularity. OP can be raised by investing money in ad campaigns and/or ad sponsors with major businesses in your nation. Note that you will already start with acting Olympic Athletes

You can create 1 Custom Athlete at the beginning of the Game. Custom Athletes will begin with a generally high performance rating to get you started.
Following the format...

Name:
Birth:
Ethnicity:
Sport(s):
Bio:

Once you have your Olympic athletes in place you can invest in Facilities, all nations start with some level, but the better they are the better your team prepares and then performs.

Step 3: Olympic Bidding

Any nation can viably present a Bid for a certain City to Host either the Winter or Summer Games. Note that certain nations will need to make major strides in order to win a hosting bid (I'm looking at you Palau). A bidding time will be opened for any nation to present its candidacy. Then a primary voting process shall be determined in narrowing the pool down to three. Those three will then be put through a final voting process. (The primary voting is done all through you and the final voting is determined by two parts. 70% is your votes and 30% is determined by a dice roll with certain factors such as facilities and budgeting)

Step 4: Let's Get this Started

The Game will begin on January 1, 1993 because by that point much of our Modern World has come to be yet it still presents a cushion between then and present day. The next Olympics shall be Lillehammer (Winter '94) followed by Atlanta ('Summer '96), and Nagano (Winter '98). The bidding prepares this year for the 2000 Olympics. Millennium and all it could be a big deal.

Note: Although sign up is already ready, I still have some minor mathematical systems to work out and obviously some processes need to be expanded and added. Right now I'm hoping to see if I have a good sized group interested in participating.

How Teams and Performance shall be Determined

The Number of Athletes your nation starts with is determined (for Summer) by its Athletes participating in the real life Atlanta Games and (for Winter) by its Athletes in the Lillehammer Games.

Success is determined the Quality Grade. This grade is determined by three main factors at the start of the Game, the team's performance in the real life coming Olympics, Olympic Performance History, and the general location of a nation. (in other words making sure that Bermuda does not stand en par with Norway)

Example: Portugal

For an example with the coming Lillehammer games a team such Portugal had only one competitor even attending and no medal was won. Furthermore no Portuguese Athlete had ever won a medal so history won't be helping them out. Furthermore the Portuguese climate limits its ability to sponsor Winter Athletics.

The Grading Scale (ex. based on Sochi Games)
1-Denotes a team with no strength in the coming games in reality, no recent medal success, and truly unhelpful location (ex. Bermuda)
2-Maybe some minor recent success and with some level of location (ex. Israel)
3-Some more success and/or location (ex. Andorra)
4-Gets Medals every once in a while, possibly got 1 or 2 Bronze's in the coming games, location may be favorable enough. (ex. Kazakhstan)
5-More consistent in medals, got some medals in the coming games, location by now is favorable (ex. Australia)
6-Is a given that it has earned medals in the recent past, certainly got a small amount of medals. (ex. Latvia)
7-Almost always gets gold and silver in at least something (ex. Great Britain)
8-Countries that tend to get a few gold silver and bronze (ex. Czech Republic :D)
9-Just outside the top-tier of contenders. (ex. Switzerland or France)
10-One of the Big Boys, the Olympic Giants that duke it out for the top 5 every time. (ex. Russia, USA, Canada)

Based on the Grading scale Portugal would get a Grade of 2. It has some Mountains and 1 major Ski Resort, so it gets its boost from the location factor.

These numbers are inputted along with the number of athletes participating in an event and the level of support put into that specific event to determine the medalists. Host nations also get a boost.

NOTE: Separate Grades are given for Summer and Winter

Your Budget and Investments

Determining how much you have at your disposal for possible bids and more often how much you can put into your athletes. All Nations will be put on a grading scale of 1-10 again. Countries like Lesotho will be around 1 while major economies like the US or China or wealthy micro-nations like Luxembourg and Qatar lay near 10. Your budget may raise if you gain Corporate Sponsors or if you begin to show great success your government may increase support.

A nation at 10 has 100% percent of funds at disposal to distribute while a nation at 1 has 10%. This distribution will be the investment process. You choose to invest certain percents into various sectors. These would be Summer Athletes and Facilities, Winter Athletes and Facilities, Olympic Bidding, and Advertising (which can in turn eventually raise your Budget).

Summer-One of the other determining factors in medal probability at the Summer Games
Winter-One of the other determining factors in medal probability at the Winter Games
Olympic Bidding-The more you invest, the better chance of your bidding success.
Advertising-Can increase the number of athletes that hope to represent your nation, increase popularity.

Athletic Events
Each nation will have a set of events that they tend to specialize in. These events are the most likely for them to achieve medals and also where most athletes will go.

Your Government
If your funds are less than favorable or you hope to have a good chance at winning a bid you need to increase the support your government gives you. Every nation starts at 50%. If your support falls below 40% any Bids will be invalid.
This number is raised by...

Being a Politician
Bidding
Making it to the Final 2 of Bidding
Winning a Host Bid
Having a successful Olympics

Raising Your Chances of Success

All the above determinations (Quality Grade, Budget, etc.) are only made at the beginning of the game. Following the start of the game there will be no statistical ties to the real life Olympics. All the rest will be determined by your actions as OC Chair.

Turns/Orders

Each Cycle will last 1/4th of a Year, One season. In this period you set your current balance of focus upon various sectors and have 3 Orders. Orders include opening a bid, launching an ad campaign, earning a sponsor, etc. Each sixth cycle (1.5 years) will be taken up by an Olympic Games

1993 Begins

5GXA5Gv.png

The 1992 Barcelona Olympics had proven to be a major Success.

As the Year 1993 Dawns the next Summer Host, the United States in 1996, certainly has big shoes to fill following an absolute spectacle in Barcelona. 1992 saw the first non-boycotted Summer Olympics since 1972 and the world had come together in a truly remarkable show. The grounds and ceremonies were pristine, likely to be remembered by viewers and participants for decades on and brought rejuvenation to a city and a nation. Such is the greatest hope for a Host Nation, that the world shall congregate in one of their own cities and they will return remembering the glory that nation has brought on. Such an age old factor as prestige has no greater field of practice than in the Stadiums, Pools, and Medal Podiums. A nation that hosts earns immeasurable glory, a city, immeasurable pride. For a span of two weeks the world looks to one place, for those that shine in the spotlight, the rewards are glorious, for those that fall short, the consequences unknown.

The world of 1993 is remarkably differed from that of just years before. The long standing Soviet Bloc has collapsed and across Eurasia new nations sprout out, ready to prove themselves to the world on an Olympic Stage as well as a diplomatic, political, and economic one. No longer will the Mass of the USSR dominate the scene of any Olympics it has tread through, leading to the possibility of many new nations to sprout up and grasp for glory. Such change is reflected in the newly elected IOC President, Rudolf Temr. Temr had managed the Czechoslovak Olympic Committee for a deal of time in the 1960's, but his personal views towards the west and participation in the 1968 Prague Spring led to his sudden deposition. Such a deposition came near the same time as the end of Věra Čáslavská's career. The world's leading Gymnast leading up to the 1968 Games, that all changed in Mexico City. Originally beaten by a Soviet Gymnast, Čáslavská stood atop the podium below her, but when the Soviet anthem came to play she refused to look at the flag, bowing her head away, defiant in the face of her nations invasion. Such is the similar story of Rudolf Temr. His return to regular free life following the Velvet Revolution and he saw himself elected IOC President, a symbol of the return of Democracy and Hope to the lands of Eastern Europe.

((Yea, made up, just a little flavor to throw in as I manage things)

As the world now turns its eyes from Barcelona, Lillehammer, just a year away, can be seen brightly approaching. The charming small town of Norway may provide the perfect location, a near fairy-tale setting and an opportunity of one of the giants of the Winter Olympics to compete on home soil. Beyond Lillehammer, a new OC Chair, American Sports Giant Ryan Ford will lead America's chance to host an Olympics for the united world, as such could not be accomplished in LA in 1984. Atlanta, bustling center of a reborn American South has the opportunity to demonstrate American values to the world, not to mention the mood of triumph following the Collapse of the Eastern Bloc. And far in the distance Nagano can be seen, another glorious Winter Olympics for the economically flourishing Land of the Rising Sun.

So too begins yet another bidding process, one that surely will not to be taken lightly. The decision is for the 2000 Olympics, a monumental occasion, the Millennium. The Symbolism with such an event provides such opportunity for the nation that comes to host. With a rapidly shrinking world, with nations across all continents becoming more and more capable of hosting such spectacular events it us definite that the Olympic Future will be diverse and brighter than ever before.

Actions/Orders:

For now you can just set your percentage distributions. Reminder that these are determined by
your Financial Standing. (1=10%, 10=100% etc.) Distributed into the Four Categories of Summer Sports, Winter
Sports, Bidding, and Advertisement.

In regards to any IC's, do as you please.

I will not open the Bidding Process until Midday on Saturday the 27. In case of any more interested individuals and to make sure everyone already in has a heads up before I start. (Note: I'm under EST)

NOTE: Still Open for Sign Up

Birth: January 17, 1963
Nationality: Italian
Background: Businessman
Bio: Gabriele is the son of Giovanni Romano, world famous fashion designer and founder of the Romano Group and model and actress Teresa Branca. He grew up with dreams of one day winning in the Olympics, earning fame of his own, yet he lacked the talent. In 1987 Giovanni Romano died from a heart attack at the age of 64, leaving the Romano Group in the hands of Gabriele. After a bad year in 1988, with some unhappy with the new direction set by Gabriele, the Romano Group started to flourish and diversifying by buying their way into other areas.

It was after this that he worked himself into the Olympic Committee of Italy for 1992. And when the old chairman retired from old age in 1993, Gabriele's campaigning succeeded and he was appointed the new chairman.

Host Bids Now Open

Quick Look at the Bidding Process...

1. Announcement of Bids (First Cycle/Winter of 1993)

2. Bid Presentations (Second Cycle/Spring of 1993)
During the Second Cycle, each Olympic Chair must defend his proposal and his city. Explain why the city should host and why it will be able to host a safe and successful Olympics.

3. Results and Voting Round 1 (Third Cycle/Summer of 1993)
At the Beginning of the Summer Portion the IOC Chair will present the Committees findings on each Bid. The Positives and Negatives of each Bid will be pointed out. Then (you) will vote on the list to narrow it down to two in a preliminary vote. Three Tiered system (Choice 1, 2, and 3 with 1 allotted 3 points, 2-2, 3-1)

4. Final Vote (Fourth Cycle/Winter of 1993)
The voting will take place in December in Monte Carlo, Monaco for the 101st Session of the IOC. (Really in September IRL, but this works out better for GP purposes). You will all vote among the two finalists. Your vote accounts for 70% of the decision, a dice roll determines the other 30%.

*Co-Host bids among neighboring countries will be allowed.

Orders

Just a reminder on Orders. You can PM them to be and allot your budgeting among the four categories.

Summer-Boosts Summer Athlete Amount and Ranking
Winter-Boosts Summer Athlete Amount and Ranking
Bidding-Increases Quality of a Bid. If you do not intend to Bid, I wouldn't recommend putting any percentage in to it.
Advertisement-Increases your Budgeting for the future.

Determined by your Budgeting. If you say have a 7 in budgeting then you have 70% to distribute among the four categories Above.

* If it isn't an Olympic Year putting high percentages into Summer and Winter will only increase amounts. When not competing in the Olympics Ranking has no effect.
