So.....I promised that this would be back and so I hopefully have kept to my promise. If people still want to play please check in and confirm that you will continue playing your character. The Death of a King
Following his victory in the Battle of the Dust, Octavius Caesar sensed his time was now. With winter fast approaching the dust storms had settled a little, with Salinus at his side and an army numbering some 18,000 men Octavius began a long march west. He made for Phoenix (an important and symbolic city as it was geographically in the center of the Empire and because it was the former Imperial capital) and all along the way collected dozens of soldiers who had defected from Vulpes ranks with them came the news that the Seventh Legion under Aurelius had been crushed just outside Phoenix and, that what was left of his Legion after its surrender had been decimated, while Aurelius was castrated and then beheaded. News of Aurelius's fall further invigorated Octavius and he sped up his march for Phoenix.
By mid September he was closing in on the old city (the part which had been nuked) and on the 17th had made camp on its outskirts. The city itself was said to be nearly dead following its sacking at the hands of Vulpes following the battle that had taken place there. On September 20th Salinus informed Octavius that his scouts had encountered several Black Tar scouts under the command of Vulpes just to the south of the city, it was rumored that the "Emperor's" army numbered some 23,000 men. The mood in Octavius's camp was high and many of his men cheered him as he passed. However the atmosphere was somewhat subdued after several raids carried out by Vulpes's frumentarii succeeded in killing or wounding several prominent officers in the Lost Legion and the Eight. That night Octavius and his commanders held a council and it was decided that it would be here that they ended Vulpes for good.
Octavius was still recovering from the burns he had received during the Battle in the Dust however he was still able to mount his motorized chariot and lead his army into battle. He decided to deploy his men in an unconventional formation, leaving the center of his line almost bare save for several units of inexperienced militiamen and recruits. The right was manned by several thousand grizzled veterans of the Lost Legion along with many defectors while the left was primarily manned by legionnaires from Texas and New Mexico. The night before the battle Octavius had several officers from the Texan Legion otherwise known as the Eigth send letters to Vulpes promising to defect come the morning and to turn on and hopefully kill their Imperator. The ploy seemingly worked, as Vulpes left his right flank lightly manned focusing the bulk of his most experienced troops towards the center and right of his lines.
On September 21st the Sun dawned red over the Arizona desert, and across the battlefield the drums and trumpets of both armies could be heard as the Legion prepared for battle. Octavius ordered his men to wear red rags on their arms so that they could tell each other apart from the enemy come the melee while Vulpes ordered his men to wear purple. As the dawn faded and the sun drew closer to the middle of the sky the battle lines were drawn and the armies stood staring at eachother from several hundred meters away. Octavius rode out on his chariot moving across his lines and gave his men an impassioned speech, imploring them to defend themselves and their families and warning them of the fate that would await them should they fail. Soon after his speech the best marksmen on both sides began to take pot shots at the opposing army. Octavius's skirmishers would get lucky, killing one of Vulpes centurions however both sides soon grew tired of the gunfire and Vulpes marched forth with the center of his line, ripper in hand he charged forth quickly closing the distance between the two armies.
At this point the sound was deafening as soldiers on both sides began to cheer the names of their perspective Emperor's. As Vulpes beared down on the center of Ocatvius's line, Octavius took his left and began a counter charge against the right of Vulpes line. The distance closed and the armies met with a scream of swords and a tearing of flesh. In the center Salinus led the defense as he tried desperately to keep the militiamen and recruits from routing in order to buy his Imperator time. On the right of the line experienced veterans grunted against each other in a bloody slog in which little to no progress was made by either side. On the right however decisive action was being taken. The Texans instead of turning on their Emperor rallied to him and the recruits who had been sent against them had expected an easy fight, instead they were met with the war cries of a thousand long dead tribes. Many of Vulpes commanders were taken by surprise and the Centurion charged with keeping order on his right flank was killed early in the fighting leading to a general route on that flank. Octavius wanted to pursue his fleeing enemies however a courtier sent by Salinus described the situation on the center as critical and so Octavius turned his lines towards Vulpes flank and began to roll up the center of his lines one unit at a time. It was a bloody business however within around 45 minutes much of the center was clear, stiff resistance still remained in some parts of the line and to Octavius's horror he saw that on his left flank the veterans of the Lost Legion were being slaughtered by reserves who had been called into action by Vulpes.
Then, Octavius caught a glimpse of Vulpes and his shredder. The man was surrounded by his praetorian guards and was cutting through a group of Octavius's recruits with ease. The young Imperator rushed forth to meet his challenger flanked by his own praetorian guard and, in the center of the line the two Emperors met face to face for the first time. When Vulpes saw Octavius he waved his praetorians aside and for a second it seemed the battle had stopped as both armies held their breath to see the result of the conflict in the center. Octavius stepped towards Vulpes and spat at his feet, taking his machete he swung for the older man only to hear the whir of Vulpes shredder and recoil his arm back as quickly as he could. For several minutes the men stood exchanging blows when at last Octavius lost his footing and slipped on a patch of blood. Vulpes brought down his shredder on Octavius's thigh and the young Imperator screamed. Vulpes continued to cut down in glee until the blade got stuck in his bone and jammed. Octavius began to lose consciousness quickly due to the pain however with his last ounces of strength he brought his blade up and stuck it through Vulpes throat. The older man gave a blood curdling gurgle and sank to his feet choking on his own blood.
Several weeks later the young Emperor awoke to find a great cast around his leg. Salinus told him that after he had struck down Vulpes the battle had turned into a route and that most of Vulpes men had immediately surrendered. From across the Legion envoys had arrived from every garrison declaring Octavius Imperator and the true son of Caesar. However for all the good news there was always some bad. There was still no sign of the remains of Octavius's family and there were reports that several of Vulpes former frumentarii still remained at large, stirring up discontent out of fear of Octavius's wrath.
Thus ended the Second Legion Civil War.
