“What now sir?”

“Not sure, there is something ahead. Quiet. Slow down.”

They had left Chicago a few day ago, and now had initially proceeded inland. Jacob wished to avoid the lakes, the weather in the autumn could be unpredictable, and radioactive rain wasn’t exactly that nice, especially now that they had had to waste a good amount of stockpiled Rad-X and RadAway due to that unlucky encounter with a tornado a couple of months back. Thus a safer albeit longer route was taken. Or well, somewhat safer. There were a few other dangers inlands. Mutated beasts, and a nasty amount of raiders. There was nobody to keep guard either, not before Ronto or Pitt, places Jacob had learnt about at Chicago after making some inquiries. Motown, previously known as Detroit, was allegedly a complete hellhole. An excellent place to conduct business in, thus. Especially with all the luxury goods and arms Jacob had in his caravan.

“Allright, I guess they haven’t seen us yet.” Jacob lifted his binoculars. “Nothing too bad, looks like regular raiders. But man, they have a load of some stuff here. Look, there is an underground entrance that they are guarding. Well boys, normally we would have just gone around it. But now, eh? Now we are going to requisition whatever they are holding down there. Let’s go. And minimal bloodshed, eh? I don’t want any of the stuff stained with blood.”

The group split into three, a few stayed back to guard the brahmin and the caravan goods, while the rest spilt into two assault groups, one lead by Jacob and one by Roberts, one of the most trusted guards in Jacob’s entourage, who happened to not be a total hothead like that arson-Sanchez. As it was already almost dark, they were able to advance very close to the raiders on guard. Soon, Jacob made an important remark. They were all high or drunk or both. Thus the ensuing fight wasn’t a firefight or not really even a fight at all. The few strongest guards rushed and tackled down the first few guards, quickly disarming them before turning on the few others, who either fled with a salvo of rapid fire following them or simply surrendered. But the most important thing was what Jacob found inside. Surely the appearance of the raiders guarding it should have given a hint or two. The whole cave was full of jet and other assorted drugs and medicine, in addition to a few bottles of booze, most of which were either filled with half-toxic moonshine or just empty.

The captured raiders were offered a deal, another of Drummer Jacob’s classic ones. They were given the choice of leaving now unarmed and without any rations – or at the outskirts of Motown with one round in their weapons and a few assorted rations and a bottle of purified water for them all. But as a payment for this luxury they would have to carry all the loot Jacob took from their ‘base’. Obviously they took the latter. About a month and a half later Ol’ Drummer Jacob arrived at Motown, a city of vice and chaos, as ready to do business as always.

September through December 2300

fallout-3-rivet-city-concept-art.jpg

The New California Republic

President Richards orders work to continue on his highway, as the last months of 2300 comes the final touches are laid on the Tandi National Highway. By December the road is opened and thousands of merchants, travelers and common people begin making the walk between the Boneyard and Necropolis. The Highway is fairly safe and several cars are even seen using this new piece of infrastructure. Although the price tag was enormous the President's cabinet still holds out hope that the project will pay for itself within a few years.

Meanwhile at the offices of the OSI in Shady Sands, a new task force is created dedicated to the research of military technology for the Army. Researchers from the Gun Runners assist the OSI scientists in this task and soon work begins on creating a new battle rifle for the NCRA. Progress is slow at first however by New Years a prototype is made and all reports indicate that the weapon is fairly formidable.

On October 7th large scale protests commence across the Republic as thousands of people march to demand a less corrupt government and an education system that is actually accessible to the vast majority of Californians. These demands are echoed in Congress by many of the followers of the late President Hammond. These protests continue and escalate in their intensity, culminating in the burning of a Crimson Caravans branch outside of New Maxson.

New Canaan

When news spread of the treatment of the New Canaanites at the hands of the 80's tribe, many in New Canaan and among New Canaan's allies openly derided Daniel. Some even began to vocally call for his replacement or exile. In response to these criticisms, perhaps in an act of extreme bravery or an act of desperation Young set out alone into Northern Nevada, carrying supplies and books on farming. He remembered the story of Job from the Bible and knew that God simply had to be testing him. The prophet walked undisturbed for many days out into the cruel Nevadan desert however he was finally stopped by an 80's patrol as he traveled along the highway. The men who found him kicked him and brutalized him, however they did not hack his hands and feet off as was often their custom and instead decided to take Young prisoner as they believed he might make a good slave for the Legion. For the next few months Young was held prisoner in a 80's war camp, there he attempted to learn their language however any time he spoke he was smacked around and eventually he simply gave up.

Back in Utah many believed Young to be dead, Commander David Wells begins to prepare a retaliatory strike against the 80's and calls upon all New Canaanites to join the cities militia. Several thousand people answer the call and Wells begins training them in the basics of soldiery. By December New Canaan seems much more warlike then it had just two months ago.

The Holy State of Elijah

Elihious is disheartened, for despite the fact that she and her councilors worked extremely hard to destroy the gangs and criminal syndicates that had recently sprung up in the slums of the Holy State their efforts had fallen short and it seemed that they were just beginning a war that could potentially go on forever. Therefore when a radical young Cardinal from the slums of Managua penned a letter to her, beseeching Elihious to end the war against drugs and to declare amnesty for the gangs she listened. Despite the protests of most of the religious council and from many of her advisors she pushed ahead, decreeing that jet, buffout mentats and all other forms of drugs would be legalized within her state. Many members of the faith protested, declaring her policies sinful and heretical behind closed doors but Elihious didn't mind. Within several weeks the murder rates were down, and by December a slow trickle of tax money began making its way back into the public purse. Penal colonies were created for former gang members on the frontiers of the Empire and the state benefited greatly from investment in production and processing plants for jet. The largest drawback of the new policy however was simply the mental health cost, within the Holy State there were about three psychologists, none of them certified and 0 rehab clinics. Should Elihious truly wish to bring her nation past the legacy of drugs and gangs she will need to help junkies find a way to fight their disease. The wider implications of this decision for the drug trade as a whole have yet to be seen...

While the drug war came to an end, Elihious also held council with her top Generals and advisors to discuss the Yucatan situation. The efforts made by the Justice Battalion under Commander Gordon several months ago had been little but an abject failure and much of the council was flustered. The meeting Elihious held lasted three days but when she was done the council had drafted a three point plan to put down the Yucatan rebels once and for all. The first step taken was the reinforce the frontier settlements and penal colonies on the border of the forest. The second step was to fortify the areas around the forest with watchtowers and guards and the final step was the creation of a special paramilitary unit called the Frontier Knights of Elijah, formed from much of the cream of the Elijan army this unit was tasked with maintaining order around the Yucatan while the frontier settlements slowly grew and began encroaching in on the forest. The strategy was a long term one, and despite several criminals escaping into the forest to form their own groups it seemed that for the large part Elihious's strategy would work for now.

Commander Gordon took his failure, during the Yucatan campaign rather hard and ultimately disbanded the task force sent to him by Elihious a summer ago. With the 100 soldiers of the Justice Division left under his command he decided to strike out on his own making for the deep south of the country he reached the Panama Canal and crossed it by mid November. Soon he passed out of Holy State territory and entered the untamed lands of Columbia, home to dozens of small city states and a Union of Republics in its far western reaches. By December Gordon and his troops reached Caracas where the local city government offered them land in exchange for fighting for the city in a war with several neighboring settlements. When the news broke of Commander Gordon's disappearance back in the Holy Land he was labeled a deserter and a warrant was issued for his arrest and interrogation.

Jacobstown

Marcus has always been a supermutant with a mind for business and in the final months of 2300 he proves his abilities once again. Using some old contacts in the NCR he organizes several caravans and sends them through the relatively anarchic Legion to New Canaan. Several squads of super mutants guard these caravans and none dare attack them. When they arrive in Utah the merchants unload their goods quite easily as they are able to sell them at a discount (due to the time it takes them to reach New Canaan the caravaneers going from Jacobstown to New Canaan spend a lot less to get there then merchants going along the northern routes) which puts other more traditional NCR caravan outfits at a large disadvantage. When the caravan returns Marcus is pleased to hear about the success of the expedition and soon several caravans are sent between the two communities every month.

Meanwhile in the Divide Chase Howitzer served out his probation, at first he struggled and became a bit depressed as he was not allowed to fly however in time he began to find other things to do. He fell back to his oldest hobby, repair and began attempts to build a second flight simulator in his spare time. As the months progressed he drew closer to that goal until finally in December the mutants of Jacobstown had a second flight simulator. Once this was done he began serving in the active duty patrols which fought against the burned men who still inhabited the Divide. One day he was on one such patrol and took a bullet to the shoulder although luckily it was little more than a flesh wound and a few stims perked him right back up. To Chase's glee he even got to use Red Glare once or twice by the end of December.

Midwest Bazaars

Jacob arrives in Chicago part way through the season and is happy to see the city which he had visited so many times before, as he traveled through the streets of the town he found mostly women children and the elderly to be there as all the young men had departed long ago for the war. After receiving a business permit from the Midwest Brotherhood Jacob made several contacts in the great city and opened another branch there. Then after taking a break for several weeks set off again, this time the destination was Motown. By the end of December he was halfway there.

Ronto

In the frozen wastes of the great white north General Wells was discouraged by the results of his trade expedition, decided to initiate the training of an elite group of men who were dubbed the Ronto Rangers by the locals. Only a hundred or so men were raised however they were armed with the best weapons available to the General and were trained in all types of terrain (excluding deserts because Ronto isn't near any deserts unless it's a desert of snow).

While the training of the Ronto Rangers was under way Wells also decided to send two expeditions into the Canadian wasteland before the deep winter snows arrived and ended all hopes of travel for the season. 500 men under Corporal Martin and 500 men under Corporal Soares were sent in two different directions. The men under Martin were sent due north with their destination set for the fabled city of Ottowa. Meanwhile the men under Soares set out for the Great Lakes region. As the October snows came Martin's men were the first to report back saying that they had found Ottowa but the city had been "nuked to hell" and that "that shithole is more irradiated than Lord Ashur's asshole". Despite this a small military base was established with 50 men and the rest of the troops returned south. When reports from Soares expedition came back in they were less pleasant. Soares men reported that they had encountered tribals riding what appeared to be white and brown Yao-Gui's. They had attempted to treat with Soares but the Corporal had grievously offended the tribal leader and many of the men in the expedition had been killed as a result.

Meanwhile in Ronto proper a new lumber company is founded under the leadership of Ray Vanderbilt. Using his personal fortune he employs several dozen brawny Canadians who help him log pinetrees. The work progresses well and by the end of December Vanderbilt Timber is the premier company for all of Ronto's timber needs.

The Pitt

The neighbors of the Pitt grow nervous when the news breaks that Empress Marie has called for the recruitment of 5,000 new regulars, in order to form a new army which is soon dubbed by Pitt strategists the Army of the North. The call is answered and many of the recruits come from the plantations and farms in West Virginia. Soon the army is deployed on the northern frontier, along the Erie Stretch, now all they must do is wait for whatever comes next.

Meanwhile in the Pitt itself several large expeditions are organized, Empress Marie orders the traders of the Pitt to find a new route North East, in order to reach the fabled Technocracy and their capital at Boston, the expeditions are successful however they do find that there is no way to reach the Technocracy without going through Springfield (unless you go on a several hundred mile detour around Albany), however come December the merchants report back satisfied in having found several safer more efficient trade routes into the North East.

Nova Roma

On Staten Island, Princep Claudius orders his men to finish construction of the defenses they began earlier in the year. With the militaries discipline problem somewhat fixed this goes off without a hitch however it does prove to be rather costly, and many wonder aloud who, among Nova Roma's rivals had a navy capable of assaulting the island.

While construction is completed on the island's fortifications Claudius also orders his people to begin construction on a school, an old pre-war highschool is found, cleared and renovated and by December several classrooms are operating, offering the children of Nova Roma a first class education in the great history of Nova Roma and the fall of Vault 191.

Meanwhile the Magister Militum Decimus, gathers many of the more technical Romans on the island, together at his barracks. There he instructs them to assist him in the building of a blacksmith's shop for the army. The project costs a pretty penny however by New Year's, Nova Roma is capable of building a repairing its own machetes, tools and axes.

The Commune of Vault 191

In the stinking Communist heart of New York City Comrade Foucalt sends a large expedition forth into the ruins of Manhattan in search of industrial tools capable of increasing the Commune's production. The hunt goes well and although several groups of ghouls and raiders are encountered no major resistance is met and the troops manage to locate a Robco Factory which they scrap down to the bone. Upon their return Foucalt is rather pleased and with their contributions the Commune manages to increase its output of weapons and, consumer goods.

While the expedition is ongoing the rest of the Commune's guards spend their time training in the Vault's lower levels. They are told to get used to their new pistols the "Red Menace" and that they do. After expending a lot of pricey ammunition the guards are able to conduct themselves as well with their new pistols as they did when they had the 10 mm.

Facade's Army

With his defeat at the hands of the Gulf States and the defeat of the Enclave at the hands of the DCC in the north, Facade decides to end the Georgia campaign entirely, instead returning back to Virginia for the early winter months his army begins preparing an extensive line of trenches and machine gun nests along the Potomac. Thousands of slaves take part in the project and several dozen are quite literally worked to death by their masters.

While slaves and mutants work alike on the northern line, Facade sets about whipping his army into shape. During the ambush his slaves cost him the battle, the whole army knew an axe would soon come down on those god-forsaken folk and so it did. From September to December the slaves of Facades army barely slept as they were trained day and night in military tactics. Discipline, level headedness and hatred for their enemies was what the slaves lived breathed and ate in the waning months of 2300. By late December 2/3 of Facade's grand army was much more lethal than it had been just several months before. This may or may not be a good thing for Facade in the long run however.

[Large Scale Fortification Efforts to the North Begin they could be described as alright fortifications for now, +.25 military tech]

The Kingdom of Springfield

In an effort to diversify Springfield's economy away from simple agriculture bolstered by a trickle of trade, King Arnold makes an effort to encourage entrepreneurs to set up some service based businesses within the country, by offering tax credits to all new businesses that manufacture some sort of good. The effort goes well at first however when, merchants from the Pitt arrive their dirt cheap prices on metal goods in conjunction with the dirt cheap prices the Institute charges on consumer goods drives most of these ventures out of business. In the end King Arnold losses several thousand caps and it seems many in his cabinet have begun to regret the treaty they signed with the Institute.

Meanwhile on the northern frontier, exasperated regular troops are relieved by the arrival of several hundred more men, sent from Springfield. These troops do their best against the tribals and even launch several ambushes and raids of their own which succeed in burning down a few villages however at the end of the day a larger commitment will need to be made in order to put King Arnold's War to an end.

The Capitol Brotherhood of Steel

Following the pyrrhic victory at Fort Meade, many in the Brotherhood are left asking "what now?" in October of 2300 they have their answer when Elder Casdin and Governor-General Ron Shirely sign a 8 point agreement dividing the spoils of the war. In the eight point agreement many important issues are touched on, first off the Brotherhood receives 500 ex Brotherhood members as well as their families in an exchange with the DCC. In addition to this the Brotherhood receives the one captured vertibird from Fort Meade in order to replace their losses earlier in 2300. The Brotherhood agrees to cede Fort Meade (although they couldn't really hold it...in their current state at least) to the DCC. Both sides reaffirm their de jure alliance and mutual defence pact and, both sides agree to an exchange of technology. However the most important point of the deal for the Brotherhood is recognition of their right to recruit soldiers from within the territory controlled by the DCC. Among the ranks of the Brotherhood the deal is well met and although for now the DC Chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel is considered crippled, with Elder Casdin at the helm of the organization many people see a way forward.

As the dust settles across the Capitol wastes, the Brotherhood's technicians manage to miraculously complete their VR program, allowing them to produce machines capable of running virtual training scenarios.

The DCC

Upon the announcement of the final deal that was reached with the Brotherhood, Ron Shirley's popularity ratings plummet to the lowest they have been in his 30+ year career as a politician. He is derided by both nationalists and isolationists and many veterans organizations blame him for handing away their hard fought victory to the Brotherhood. The ex-Brother's who are sent back to the Citadel are forced, many of whom are evicted from their homes and all across the DCC the common people and politicians alike are infuriated at Shirley's treatment of these "patriots". Throughout the months of November and December riots take place against the treaty, and in the council a motion to impeach Shirley is introduced and nearly passes. Anti Brotherhood fervor has never been higher in the city and many within the DCC and without question what will happen next.

An effort to settle the ruins of Fort Meade fails terribly due to Ron Shirley's name being attached to the bill proposing it, however regular units stationed at the Fort do begin repairing some of the damage from the siege and by December much of the internal damage to the fort is patched up.

With political instability rocking the DCC and Rivet City to its core, Councilor Kelvin remains an absolute in an ever changing world. He continues his extremely popular campaign to introduce a state sponsored pension system to elderly of the Confederation. The bill passes with flying colors and thousands of elderly voters especially those over the age of 57 (average life expectancy/the age at which you start receiving your pension) begin to deify Kelvin as a man of the people.

As a result of Kelvin's recent wave of social welfare laws several thousand immigrants make their way into the Confederation and begin settling in frontier towns 45 miles south of Baltimore.

To Kill a Grand Dean

Fallout-4-3.jpg

In early September of 2300 Grand Dean Fowler decided to make the fateful decision to visit the Götterdämmerung Facility on Monolith Island outside of Nova Scotia. There, he was to review the top secret projects being conducted by Doctor Harlow. While he was gone the science teams at CIT and the other colleges completed work on the battle droids and they told the Grand Dean that by January they'd be ready to produce their first models. When word reached Fowler of the advances he was greatly cheered and thus decided to try his luck again by sending his vertibirds up to the northern end of Nova Scotia to scout out the port there.

While his men were gone the Grand Dean began a tour of Harlow's facility. There he saw many of the top secret projects that Harlow and his teams were working on in their state of the art facilities. Fowler was greatly impressed by many of the military projects however the facility did not only work on military projects but also had a strong presence from the college of medicine. Thus they also visited a sick ward full of patients dying from the Florida Flue and Fowler got to meet several of the scientists working on a cure for the disease.

By December 7th Fowler's one week visit to Nova Scotia had come to an end, the Head Dean was in a particular urge to return to Boston as well for during the last few days of his stay on the island he had become terribly ill. Thus he waited for his vertibirds to return from the north and left in a hurry on the morning of the seventh. While he was over the open Ocean of the Atlantic his vertibird exploded and all aboard were killed.

Later that day several vertibirds from Harlow's facility landed in Boston reporting the Grand Dean's vertibird had been attacked by an unknown force. Many in the Grand Dean's Council and the Council of Knowledge were shocked and deeply saddened however some celebrated (privately) and on December 22nd Doctor Elridge Parker a prominent Technocrat was elected Grand Dean, becoming the first Technocrat to hold the position in over two decades.

The Great Midwestern War

latest

Jacobstown Commando

Foreign Actors
In September of 2300 the disparate conflicts in the Midwest began to be known collectively as the Great Midwestern War due to the entrance of multiple foreign actors and the first direct clashes between the Midwestern and Texan Branches of the Brotherhood of Steel. So far as foreign actors were concerned the Mojave Brotherhood of Steel managed to construct one new vertibird for the Midwestern Brotherhood using several parts bought from the NCR, and it was delivered in late October in return for 110,000 caps, no small sum for the Mojave Brotherhood. The Brother's also began looking at satellite images in search for new places to raid for technology however none were found.

Meanwhile the supermutants of Jacobstown under the command of Marcus took a much more direct roll in the conflict. Two teams of fifty nightkin are sent out from the small nation state and begin a march directly for the western border of the Union and more specifically Lake City. Keene and Lily are put in charge of the operation and both are given very important, very direct orders.

Keene and his men infiltrate into Lake City's government district using their stealthboys. They then proceed to locate Fort Richardson, home of the Union's treasury. What ensues will go down in history as one of the best special forces raids in the 200 years since the bombs dropped. Keene has his men men infiltrate past most of the guards until they reach a great vault in which hundreds of thousands of Union caps are stored. In order to crack the vault door open the mutants plant several pounds of C4 all around it and detonate the charges. With their cover blown several nightkin hold the entrance with their chainguns while Keene and his men detonate several radiation grenades within the treasury and set fire to what's left with flamers. Keene then blows a hole through the opposite side of the Fort using a mini nuke and makes his escape. Over 25 nightkin give their lives in the raid however they effectively cripple the Union financially.

Meanwhile Lily and her nightkin are considerably less successful in their attempted raid on the Union's main air base outside of Lake City. One of her commandos set off a laser trip wire which leads to 40 of her men being captured and Lily herself barely making it back to Jacobstown alive.

[-500,000 caps Union, -65 Nightkin, +1 Vertibird Midwestern BoS, 110,000 caps transferred to the Mojave BoS from the Midwest BoS]

The Dakota-Montana Front
Yet again both sides launch large scale recruitment campaigns, so far as the Union is concerned their recruitment plans are cancelled due to their current fiscal situation. Meanwhile the Brotherhood fails in recruiting more experienced troops as any soldier worthy of being a Paladin or a Knight already is one, however they do conscript 3,000 people of fighting age from the slums of Chicago who are promptly shipped to the front. While the recruiting campaigns go on, both sides are again preparing for large scale offensives, against the better judgement of many generals on both sides.

As with previous months, backwoods fighting erupts across the front as auxiliary troops and tribals from both sides continue their onslaught against one another, however as winter approaches the tribesmen are getting tired and many hope to return home soon to see their families before the deep snows begin to fall. This stage of the fighting is much shorter than in previous months, due to the coming of the November snows.

The main body of the Brotherhood army celebrates their victories in Minnesota and South Dakota over the summer and morale is higher than it has been in months. Much of September and early October is spent digging in and preparing supplies for the planned offensive. Among the Union army morale is relatively good, and the full scale of the damage inflicted by the Jacobstown mutants is never revealed to the general public. Many troops see the Brotherhood summer offensive as a temporary setback and hope for further escalations in the Missouri Conflict. The Union spend all of September preparing however by October 5th the Union Chiefs of Staff report to Overseer Matthews that they are ready for the offensive and on the 6th thousands of Union troops emerge from their bunkers and trenches to once again challenge the Brotherhood on the open fields of South Dakota. All in all 8,000 professional troops are used for the offensive in comparison with 4,000 professional Brotherhood troops who are on hold at the time to stop the attack. The results are telling as Brotherhood Knights and Paladins are surrounded and cut down while their conscripts route and are mowed down by Union vertibirds. The Brotherhood offensive into North Dakota is put on hold and then cancelled as many of the men are redeployed into the middle of South Dakota where fighting is the most intense. However with the arrival of the November snows the fighting comes to an end as both armies are utterly exhausted, and commanders on both sides are forced to deal with a deteriorating logistical situation.

Union propaganda also begins to play a far greater role, on the homefront than it had in years past with Overseer Matthews making several live addresses over the radio to people all across the Union and in South Dakota. This propaganda campaign is spearheaded by Colonel Merridew and it is very successful. Many people take to buying government war bonds and several pro Union militias form behind Brotherhood lines in South Dakota.

The Missouri Conflict
In Texas new of the failure of Operation Fortification was not taken well by the High Command and in September Operation Mameluke Thrust is put into effect to cleanse Missouri of any and all resistance. The first step of this operation is the recruitment of 1,300 men from Arkansas to serve in the newly constituted Third Corps which promptly leaves for Missouri in order to shore up Brotherhood supply lines in tandem with the Second Corp under Master of Arms Joshua Golden. This is done with speed and brutality as constant Brotherhood patrols sweep the highways, at first there is heavy fighting however due to Brotherhood experience and equipment 9 out of 10 times the Texans win and by October the insurgents give up due to heavy casualties. With his main task completed Golden continues the patrols through the rest of the season however the main body of his corp retires to Kansas City where they fortify their positions. There is still unrest in much of the outlying areas of the city and many Brother's still fear the city slums however this soon changes as entire neighborhoods are gathered up and shipped off to work camps deep in the Texan desert.

The Third Corp stationed in St. Louis begins to fan out into the surrounding countryside, and there they wage a campaign of wanton destruction and cruelty against the native populace. Across the state the Texans chant the slogan "Surrender or Fall" and by November much of central Missouri has been pacified as any and all communities that have resisted Texan control lie destroyed. All across the state Midwestern BoS symbols are replaced with Texan ones and although fighting is heavy in many places the Texans always emerge victorious.

The only place that Operation Mameluke Thrust is not a success is in the northern corners of the state. There the Texans have a much harder time with the rebels who seemingly have a much better understanding of their equipment, tactics, and operational capabilities than their counterparts to the south. The answer to this quagmire comes when a Midwestern Brotherhood scribe is captured in a raid on an insurgent camp. The Texan soldiers are outraged and several units begin shelling Midwestern Border posts. In response the Midwesterners step up their support for the rebels, some lone units even begin offering them surplus equipment and by New Years day it seems that war has broken out between the two chapters.

[+300 Paladins, +1,000 Knights, -19,500 caps, -63,500 income, -800 Paladins, -1,200 Knights, Insurgency put down in Central and Southern Missouri, -100 Midwestern Knights]

Motown in early winter of 2301 was ruled by a number of warlords, called the foremen. These strong men had carved their own fiefs, made of thugs and other shady people gathered around the former industrial facilities of the town. Interestingly, Motown had succeeded in something that many of the other ‘civilizations’ hadn’t. They had managed to make the pre-war cars work again, and on a massive scale too. Automotive industry had always been the thing of Detroit – now Motown, after all. And these cars and other powered machines seemed to be the culmination of the strength of the foremen, and bitter rivalry had accumulated between the kings over the control of their fuel and production.

Thus Jacob had to act very carefully. At first, he sent a few of his caravan guards into the hellhole to announce his upcoming visit, while waiting camped outside the city. They returned after identifying the most important warlords, whom Jacob visited and presented with a number of gifts. Guns, valuables and such. These gifts were just as respect in Motown as they were everywhere else in the wastes of what was America. On the outskirts of the city, Jacob and his men located an abandoned series of warehouses, which were then cleared of a bunch of feral ghouls, raiders and other annoying creatures. In these warehouses, far away enough from the street brawls of Motown, Jacob opened the local HQ. And in it he stored the huge number of addictive substances seized from the raiders a few months ago. The plan was simple, to first sell them on remarkably low prices and flood the city of thugs and fighters, and then to increase the prices in later months. These were the instructions Jacob gave to a few guards he left behind to run the place, before starting to prepare a summer expedition towards Ronto.
_ _ _

That had been worst bloodshed she had witnessed so far in her life. Surely, growing up in Iowa she had seen some and definitely in that raider-infested place she had been exiled to. But now, this had been on a totally different scale. Thousands of legionnaires had died and many more were wounded. Maybe she had been brought along due to exactly that. After all, after the ‘battle in the dust’ in which the Imperator had received severe burns, she had tried to help in treating him. But no, he had rushed to the next battle without waiting for proper recovering. And now the boy had almost died. Luckily for him the war was over; otherwise he could very well be dead after the next battle, she thought. As Octavian was rushed to the tent from which Julia had witnessed the battle, his condition had seemed quite bad. Loss of blood had been severe, and the limb had almost been severed, with heavy damage reaching to the bone and to main arteries. It was a miracle that they had been able to stop the bleeding, and that he had survived that. Another miracle was the fact that they had so far been able to avoid amputating the battered leg, even though it still could end up seriously infected.

However, waking up from the unconsciousness had taken weeks, and even after that the Imperator was seemingly rather weak. In those weeks Julia had been extremely worried about her possible fate in case he happened to die. But she had also worked on something. After managing to grab writing instruments and a lot of paper, she had spent the nights writing a manuscript on the Battle of Phoenix. Several pages long, it included details on the conduct of the campaign, review of the opposing forces and the decisions of both sides as well as her personal analysis. She was proud of the work; it was almost like those history books of the old pre-war world. Hiding the papers under her still bloodstained tunic, she would wait for Octavian to somewhat recover before presenting it to the victor of Phoenix and now undisputed Imperator of the Legion.

Born into the Pitt, the children of former slaves, Martin Luthor opposes slavery and all it entails, but has risen in recognition for his calls to end the oppression of other with violence only when necessary. When Alex Hammond went missing and no trace could be found, his popularity thrust him to leadership in the Temple of the Union. Time will tell if his alternative views on ending slavery will meet with support or criticism from within the ranks of the Temple. One thing was sure, out and out conflict with the Pitt could end only one way if things remained as they were.

It was dusk in the temporary camp. After talking with the local leaders, they had offered him land for fighting. He knew that while that would be good, he knew he could not stay in Caracas, for it was too near to the zealots in the Holy City. He knew this was to close. He did have several options from whence to go, however. He could head south towards the Andes Mountains, giving good terrain to escape and hide. It would be near impossible to find them if they plunged into the Amazon jungle, though living in a jungle would be very hard. And the most obvious option would be to stick along the northern and eastern coast of South America, where there were many populated cities. However, this would be the easiest to follow. Then Gordon wondered if they would even come after him and his men. Maybe not, but with these idiots, who could tell? Just then, his lieutenant came up to him and said, "Sir, what are we going to do?"

Gordon turned and said, "camp here for tonight, but prepare the trucks. At first light, we shall move."

Trinity Tower, Boston, Technocracy of Massachusetts

The Doctor looked at the city below from the tower's sixtieth floor. It had been one of the first things reconstructed and renovated by the Institute when they secured Boston, and now it served as the nucleus for all governance in the Technocracy. This floor, this office, was the Head Dean's: the office of the most powerful man in the Technocracy. It had a gutted look to it owing to most of Fowler's furniture and trinkets being removed to make way for his successor, Doctor Eldridge Parker, who had yet to move in...

There was a sound as the elevator doors opened with a small beep and the Doctor turned towards the double doors as the footsteps grew louder. The doors opened gently as Head Dean Parker entered followed by two officers of the Military Research Bureau.

"Greetings Doctor Harlow."

His greeting was not registered with a response as the Doctor glared at the officers before dismissing them with a quick wave of the hand. They meekly moved backwards and shut the double doors, their footsteps growing faint as they scurried off. The Doctor turned back towards the Head Dean.

"Doctor Parker. Congratulations."

"Thank you, but we both know this was not possible without your support."

"Of course not. It was a shame about Doctor Fowler, but he stuck his nose where he shouldn't have, and he blocked progress...in the name of what? Humanitarianism...compassion...repugnant and pointless distractions in humanity's pursuit of science."

"Y-yes...indeed."

"I summoned you here to inform you I will be taking this floor, for when I am here of course. The fifty-ninth floor is already being prepared for you."

"I understand."

"Good, as long as you abide by the arrangements we discussed there should be no problem. Understand your place, and all will be well. Fail to do so and you can join Doctor Fowler in spiritual enlightenment."

"There will be no problems."

"Excellent. You are dismissed. If you need anything, contact General Hyde."

The Head Dean nodded before dismissing himself and exiting the room, his footsteps growing faint and the sound of an elevator ringing as it arrived. Before long there was silence again and the Doctor looked back out at the city and the rolling expanse that was the Technocracy.

The biggest threat to his plans was vanquished, without so much as a bead of sweat on his part. But it was only the beginning. His plans before were child's play...then again he did not have the entire Technocracy at his disposal...but now he did, there were no excuses, he had a dream for the world, for humanity and for science and now he was going to fulfill it. Or he was going to die trying, and bring the rest of the world down with him.

Name: Doctor Ernest Asser
age: 42
Faction: The Institute/ Meritocratic Party
Background: The musically talented and very intelligent son of a lowly Borlaug farmer, Ernest broke with the traditions of his family and studied at CHASS (College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences) instead of Borlaug College of Agriculture. Although he liked music, he gradually found out that he was more interested in societal studies. He eventually joined the Meritocratic party and became Dean of CHASS. When Doctor Doc Fowler became president, Asser became Vice Dean of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. When Fowler died, Asser was elected the new chairman of his party.

In his spare time, he likes to roam the wasteland looking for old pianos, which he enjoys playing, always without moving or tuning the piano, since that would ruin the authenticity of the experience.

Excerpt from Ernest Asser's Address to the People of the Commonwealth

[...] and there has been a lot of talk about the true cause of the death of the late president. Harlow and his Technocrat accomplices claim that it was an attack from "a foreign power". Let me be honest with you. I don't believe this. There is no "foreign power" with a presence in this part of New England that possesses the technology to take down a vertibird from such a distance apart from the Commonwealth. Then, they followed up with this unconstitutional "election" which I and the other Meritocrat Deans weren't even informed about.

Most of you know that the election of Doctor Parker was against the constitution which clearly states that "In case of illness, absence from the Capital City, death, resignation, or removal of the Head Dead office, the GDC Power shall devolve upon the Vice-Dean of the Technocracy" (Section 51). In other words, what Harlow and his accomplices is nothing short of a coup, and it is plain for everyone to see. They violated the very Constitution that their own Technocratic leaders authored decades ago. But the Technocratic Party is clearly not the same as it used to be. It's leadership has become rotten and decadent, and people such as Harlow and Parker have no regard for their own values or their own Constitution. If the Technocrats know what is best for themselves, they will get rid of their decadent leaders. If their leaders know what is best for themselves, they will hand over the Head Deanship to its rightful possessor, or face conviction in the Supreme Court. Either, we will see them judged and convicted by our dear colleagues in the Supreme Court or they will be judged and convicted by the People of the Commonwealth!

(( it's not really a covert coup, since Maxwell outrightly circumvented the Constitution of the Commonwealth. There is to be no change in power upon the death of the Head Dean. The legal process has already been set in motion! ))
