The most obvious threat lies in Sector E as the enemy has approached the next strategic location in that areas. It might be possible with massed support units to launch an effective counter attack in that region and reduce the control of the enemy in that sector for now.

As you wish, so shall it be.

I have two companies I can dump into E sector.
Advance or Assault?

Should D and F launch supportive attacks? That way the enemy will have to split his reserves.

My companies in C are also in excellent condition. If you want them to move, let me know.

While Supportive attacks may prevent the enemy bringing in reinforcement to not launch them may encourage the enemy to weaken those sectors which will enable counter attacks to potentially succeed and allow a possible retaking of the International Airport. As always the ultimate initiative is up to the brigade commanders.

Major General Thandros was biting on his lips, a sure sign that he was nervous. The last 12 hours had not been easy. He was in charge to defend this place, and that was already difficult enough. But starting a counterattack was even more stressful.

He took a swift look at the list of casualties. Nobody had expected anything like this. This would be the bloodiest day in the history of the United States. Thousands of serviceman would not survive the first 24 hours. Not to mention all the lost civilians. And now parts of two Regiments would attack to maintain control of an Airfield.

"Sir?", his Adjutant appeared.
"Yes?"
"It is beginning."
"Okay, Ted."

At 10:30 PM the 3rd Air Wing approached the frontline and dropped its payload on the enemy lines. Simultaneously seven companies attacked the enemy positions, supported by MBTs and IFVs. At first nothing happened, then new marks appeared on the monitor, that depicted the sector.

"Sir, Colonel Bugwar on the phone."
"Colonel?", Thandros asked as he grabbed the phone.
"General. It took some time, but now we are gaining ground. The enemy is retreating. I repeat, we made the enemy retreat. The IFVs took some hits but apart from that our casualties are considerably low."

Ground Situation:

Alpha - No hostilities

Bravo - No hostilities

Charlie - No hostilities

Delta - The enemy started another attack. Heavy fighting occurred along the San Diego Freeway, but the frontline held with average casualties.

Echo - With support from the Air Force, Tank and Recon Battalions, elements of 5th and 7th Regiment attacked the enemy, who himself also tried to gain ground. After a first phase of heavy fighting, the enemy had to give up his current positions.

Foxtrot - An enemy attack could achieve minor gains south of the International Airport.

1st Division had 76 casualties, thereof 21 dead, and got 62 replacements. The enemy had probably slightly higher casualties.

Air Situation:

The enemy had higher casualties recently. The Superiority rating remains at 1.

Support Troops:

Tank Battalion and all three Air Wings are reporting for duty.

1st Recon Battalion will be available at 11:30 PM and 2nd Recon at 12:00 AM.

Yeah. :)

I like the fact that the enemy also has recently stopped attacking across the whole front. That makes our manpower situation much more manageable.

I disagree with stripping F. The airport there is still within our reach and it makes sense to switch our focus to that sector if the attack in E stalls due to enemy reinforcements.

Available reinforcements should be deployed to Sector E but no additional forces should be stripped from other sectors in case an opportunity for a recapture of the international air port becomes possible we want to try and take that opportunity if it arises but for now we should try to secure Hawthorne Airport. The more ground we place between it and the enemy lines the better.

He looked through his binoculars northward. A few seconds later he put them down again and clicked with his tongue. He wondered, whether this was roughly the same as what his father had seen.

Colonel Victor Rundstedt. His family had been in the military for ages. No German war without a von Rundstedt since Frederick II. This changed in World War II. His father, Lieutenant Walter von Rundstedt, belonged to the remaining few who had defended Tunisia and became prisoners at Bizerte. The rest of the war he spent in the United States. And eventually stayed there. He moved to New York, removed the “von” from his name, married, founded a family and became US citizen.

When Victor was a child, he had asked his father frequently about the war. But he did not tell a lot about it. Right now he began to understand, why that had been so. In the morning he had visited a hospital and the sight had been depressing. On the way back he had passed some of the replacements. Young boys fresh from their mother`s breast, who were supposed to hold the line against a numerical and technological superior enemy.

He once again looked through the binoculars. And smiled. No. This would not end as in Bizerte. No defeat. No imprisonment.

11:00 - 11:30 PM

The attack had stopped for a short while and now they saw why. A group of planes came from the south and dropped some bombs along the enemy frontline on the other side of the street. Just a minute later, when the smoke began to disappear, the order came.

“Go, go go!”

Sergeant Edward “Bull” Harrison and his Platoon began to advance along with the rest of 3rd Battalion / 7th Regiment. After a few steps they had reached the street and crossed it. On the other side were a few houses, which were just burning and smoking ruins.

The enemy opened fire and the first Marines got wounded. Further in the north he saw some enemy planes attacking a squad, which got more or less wiped out. He made a sign, that one squad should advance and indeed they could move on without too much resistance, before they reached Osage Avenue, where the enemy again tried to stop them.

In the background was a huge pillar of smoke. The hospital was still burning. Maybe they would reach it soon.

“Ted?”
“Sir.”
“Call Colonel Tri. I need an overview.”
“Yes, Sir.”

Major General Thandros was still stressed, although the own advance had started good. Then he grabbed the phone.

“Colonel?”
“Yes, Sir.”
“Situation Report?”
“Sir, we are gaining more ground. The Tanks are helping. The enemy is on the retreat. And I mean it. He is slowly retreating without risking too much.”
“Understood.”

Ground Situation:

Alpha - No hostilities

Bravo - No hostilities

Charlie - No hostilities

Delta - An enemy attack could be repelled with low casualties.

Echo - The attack of the USMC continued and gained further ground, especially in the northern part of the sector. Severe fighting occurred and both sides had high casualties.

Foxtrot - The enemy continued the pressure in this sector and could gain some ground in the western section.

1st Division suffered 78 casualties, thereof 25 dead, and received 73 replacements. The enemy probably had equal casualties.

Air Situation:

The air combat was rather even recently, hence the Air Superiority rating remains 1.

Support Troops:

All Support Troops except the 2nd Recon Battalion are reporting for duty. The latter will be available again at 12:00 AM.

Nice. :)

The enemy is reducing its commitment in A & B of forces so I assume reinforcements for the south are inbound. In any case, the lack of activity in A - C really helps us. We should probably pull out a company from C to shore up F.

I agree. A Company, 3rd Batallion will be moving to reserve, and then to F. One support batallion in F could also prove very helpful in reducing our casualities and increasing enemy ones.
