The greatest act of treachery committed in these past few days in my eyes is that against the people of France. At a time when we stood within grasping distance of being able to established a new, appropriate constitution to enshrine our freedoms and liberties in law, such a chance has been spitefully snatched out of our hands by certain gentlemen. Now, France stands on the brink of a prolonged and destructive period of tumult and antagonism from within. At a time when stability had nigh been reached, it has been torn to shreds.

And what for? To what end has this "coup" been launched? From my perspective, it seems only to be for the benefit of its main protagonists – who, far from furthering the reach of liberty in this nation, have so far managed only to rid us of the chance to build a new and better France. Their actions are not just spiteful towards my government and our intentions. Neither is their effect felt only by His Majesty. No; these men – these so-called Men of France – have spited the people themselves in trying to defend them from false antagonism. We stood on the verge of a new, liberal future. We stand now on yet another term of violence and infighting. These men do not champion the Revolution; they champion only themselves.

I support His Majesty, not out of an unwavering deference to the institution his represents, but out of a sense of loyalty to what he has tried to do. We must commend His Majesty on his willingness to cooperate with our intended rewriting of the constitution and the extension of liberties to the people of France. To portray him at this point as an antagonising tyrant is absurd and unfounded. It is not the King who is the tyrant; instead the tyrants are those very men who claim to represent the spirit of Revolution and do so only out of a desire to further their own goals. When les Messieurs delved and Parent span, who was then the gentleman?

I shall now leave to join His Majesty at the Palais Luxembourg. There, it is hoped, we will be able to establish a channel with these "revolutionaries" while also working to breathe some stability into our current governance. His Majesty has assured me that, while we await a new constitution, all power granted to him is to be devolved to an elected organ. His Majesty also assures me that he recognises the need to limit his own powers in certain areas – namely, that of the appointment of officials.

I pray God that he will not abandon us in this moment.

Clearly the existence of the Monarchy proves incompatible with the stability of France. If Vincent Parént's coup will rid France of the accursed Monarchy, then by God we must support him.

The will of the French people is clear. There shall be no halfway-house, no part-revolution - we shall have a Republic, or we shall not have a Revolution at all!

Moreover, I would like to express my interest in joining the honourable Society of French Gentlemen, an association with the interests of the Fatherland close at heart.

For the Revolution!

During the chaos of the coup Bouchard gave a speech before the Commune of Paris:

People of Paris, the time has come for us to take our freedom and our natural rights from the tyrants who oppressed us for too long! The time has come for a Republic!

The King and his conspirators have fled to the Palais du Luxembourg, we know they were planning to suppress those who rightfully protested before the national assembly and are planning to do the same with the uprising in the national guard, we must not let them do this! People of Paris, we must assault their petty stronghold like we did at the Bastille, we must bring the enemies of the Revolution to Justice!

To arms! To the Palais du Luxembourg!

Amongst the Parisian guardsmen and revolutionaries stood one man, despite his age, taller and firmer than others. His uniform used to be an official one, yet all emblems and chevrons were torn off. Unlike others in the crowd, he did not carry any lethal weaponry. Instead, in his hand laid a long and firm baton, scratched and tinted red. Renaud de Cartelège was hardly eager to kill the men who only days ago proposed to tear up the Constitution - yet, above all, "Le Préfet" was not one to orchestrate a revolution from anywhere else than the streets it was fought in, and he had sworn to finish the Revolution by any means possible.

For now, the soap box he stood on would provide these means.

Frères, écoutez-moi!

Lower your weapons and cease your cries! We will storm this Parliament, yes, we will storm that Palace, yes, but not until every single one of us knows what we fight for. Do not listen to warmongers or naysayers. Listen to the truth.

When, only a short time ago, we put our spirit, our ideals, our lives in the hands of Robespierre and his comrades, we thought he would free us of our chains. We thought - naive as we were - that we would no longer have to be subjects of King... Louis. We thought we would be EQUAL and FREE - but we could not have been more wrong. Our brothers have wasted their lives, fighting for a better France that were not to be.

The Constitutional Convention of Elite Gentlemen made a plethora of grave errors which served no other cause than to undermine the Revolution. For whatever reason, they reinstituted the King. They made the government accountable to him. They restricted the franchise to a lucky few, and they brought over half of the Estates into the hands of reactionary lackeys of the King. They should have HANGED the King! We now find ourselves dealing with their great errors, and God forbid, we will have to spill blood to rectify them.

I call upon these Estates of which I am member to yield, and upon the guard to lay down their arms. You have become an institution of oppression which, in the name of the King, points the bayonet at its citizens. Yield, for your legitimacy has passed. Yield, for you no longer represent the people! And if you do not... THEN, brothers, WE MAY FIGHT. And when you run into this autocrat across the Seine, do not waver, do not doubt... KILL!

People of France!

The time of the monarchy has come to an end, now is the time of the people! I call on all true Frenchmen to rise up and to do away with this foul institution that has shackled us and restricted our rights for centuries. Let us do our ancestors proud and do away with the system that has done so much injustice to them! Let us bring forth an era of governance where the people may choose their leaders! Let us bring forth an era for all man!

Viva la Revolution!

At the gathering of the Monarchicals and the moderate Feulliants:

People of France! Is it not a cruel irony that these conspirators, who scream loudest about liberty, do so in response to a Government which has stated its intention to extend the suffrage to every Frenchman of age? We can see that these conspirators are only for the rule of a gang of jumped-up rich men and their hired mobs! I call on every Frenchman to resist to the utmost these usurpers who would readily deprive not only the Church, not only the King, but the very people of their rights! These conspirators are traitors - traitors to God, traitors to the King, traitors to their fellow Frenchmen!

Vive le Roi! Vive la France!

The Coup, Part One:
In the Court of Conflict, Chaos Reigns

Louis XVI would later claim that he had never trusted Vincent Parént. Whether this sentiment was genuine or merely the bluster of hindsight, no one could know but him. Regardless, he certainly had sufficient reasons to be concerned in early October; his very person had been threatened and he had spent days under siege of the populace. No sooner had the mob moved on than the King began his preparations to leave the Tuileries. He conspired with his Swiss Guard and a coterie of royalists to clandestinely remove himself and his family to the Palais du Luxembourg – almost a mile away. This was strictly illegal; the Royal Family had been under house arrest since their abortive flight to Varennes. But under the circumstances, no one was prepared to stop them. Over the course of three days, the King's family had been surreptitiously spirited away to the Luxembourg, along with their retainers and entourage. On the day the Society declared its intent to dethrone him, Louis had only just been relocated with the last of the Swiss Guard. He was greeted at the Luxembourg by his family, the rest of his Guard and a detachment of men-at-arms sent by the Minister of War to secure the building prior to his arrival. Dozens of his loyal attendants had volunteered to stay behind to give the Palais des Tuileries a semblance of occupation and so conceal the subterfuge. The King was alive and at large. The fish had escaped the net.

LuxembourgPalace.jpg

But Parént had greater problems than this. Despite his revolutionary rhetoric, he had succumbed to a classic royalist error: the presumption that he could command his men at will. Parént's election campaigning had been laced with pandering to the Third Estate in an effort to establish himself as a champion of the people. But the Third Estate was an anachronism - a relic of the old regime. With the feudal privileges of the clerical and aristocratic orders at an end, the division within France was no longer between estates, but between classes: the rich and the rest. And overwhelmingly, the National Guard was drawn from the men of property, not the men of poverty. It was the affluent who had flocked to the banner of the Feuillants; they were hardly about to conspire against the very Constitution they had voted for in September. Upon receiving orders from their commander to link arms with a mob of malcontents to storm the Assembly, they predictably refused.

Since their superiors were complicit with the rebels, the Guard instead marched to put themselves at the disposal of the King. But they found the Tuileries deserted. Those who remained, wary as they were of the Guard's intentions, denied knowing the location of the King but claimed that he was still in Paris. Suspecting that he may have fled to the Château de Saint-Cloud (if he was still in the capital at all), the Guard departed. But as they turned on to the Rue Saint-Honoré, they were intercepted. Marching at the head of a massive rebel militia was André Bouchard, who had been informed of the Government's retreat to the Luxembourg and had swiftly rallied the revolutionaries to seize it. And he was not alone: at his side were Antoine Durand, the Phrygian; Renaud de Cartelège and Javert Valjean, the Cordeliers; and Valérian Lémieux, the Jacobin. Even Mayor Aulard had endorsed their cause. The entire French Left had thrown its weight behind the insurrection. As coincidence would have it, the Guard and the rebels it sought to suppress would converge just outside the Tuileries.

ebb2ae6c-a6b3-4b12-8681-e656b45a0c17.jpg

The two forces regarded each other suspiciously. Then Parént appeared, having learned of the Guard's insubordination. Once again, he ordered them to support the uprising; with the Government in disarray and the King absent, he argued, the people were the only source of authority. Backed by the intimidation of the hostile crowds, his words carried weight. The Guardsmen selected from the radical districts of Paris began to defect. They were soon joined by the opportunists who merely wanted to back the winning side, which the insurrection appeared to be, and the pragmatics who merely wanted to survive. As this trickle flourished into a torrent of defections, the royalist officers of the Guard called upon their men to withdraw. At the sight of this, the rebels attempted to disarm the recalcitrant Guardsmen and everything became chaos. The royalists barricaded themselves within the Tuileries while the rump of the Guard took shelter within the nearby Palais-Royal. They were safe here; the Jacobin agitators did not wish to affront their patron, the Duc d'Orléans. Under the Constitution, as the closest male relative to Louis XVI still within France, he was the natural regent for Louis-Charles (the heir apparent) if his father was rendered unable to govern. It was on this tenuous thread of authority that the remnant of the Guard - reduced by now to 6,000 men - hung its hopes. It placed itself at the disposal of the Duke. In his hands he held the power to turn the tide of the coup, in either direction.

PhilippeEgalityheadshot.jpg

For the battle of France would be fought on the plains of Paris. The Baron d'Harfleur had ordered the Army to suppress the rebellion, but it was scattered across the border regions, the nearest of which was still days away from the capital. On their own part, the rebels could call upon the strength of the Navy and the National Gendarmerie - but the latter was, like the Army, dispersed across the nation, while the former could have no influence on landlocked Paris. The revolutionary caucus had been swelled by the Durandists and the dissident Guardsmen, while the Government had been bolstered by the mobilisation of loyalists in the Le Peletier district and the Royal Guard. These were all the forces they possessed as they prepared for their confrontation. 6,000 men could determine the fate of millions.

-------------------------
Player Actions Needed:

This is merely a set up to the actual coup. As of now, the composition of each side is as follows:

FOR THE GOVERNMENT

Swiss Guard (900)
Royal Guard (1,400)
Men-at-Arms (300)
Loyalist Militia (N/A)
French Army (40,000)

FOR THE REVOLUTION

Republican Guard (5,900)
Phrygian Guard (200)
Rebel Militia (N/A)
National Gendarmerie (3,660)
French Navy (21,000)

UNALIGNED

National Guard (6,000)

You can find a map of 18th century Paris here. Using this, you must formulate a battle plan (if you are in a position of command) for the coming coup. The commanders of each side will want to coordinate with each other to ensure that they are not working at cross-purposes. Carefully read the update to determine the present locations of all your units. Note that this is not a simple war of attrition; you will want to seize strategic locations and defend your own positions as much as you will want to damage the other side.

For the Government, the Swiss Guard and the Royal Guard are under the command of King Louis XVI ((Ab Ovo)), the Men-at-Arms are under the command of Édouard-Alexandre Blair ((DensleyBlair)) and the Army is under the command of Paul-Aurélien de St Sebastien, Baron d'Harfleur ((Riccardo93)). The loyalist militia is isolated and therefore cannot be directed.

For the Revolution, the Republican Guard and the National Gendarmerie is under the command of Vincent Parént ((Dadarian)), the Phrygian Guard is under the command of Antoine Durand ((EmperorGrimm)) and the Navy is under the command of Charles-Pierre-François Augereau ((baboushreturns)). The rebel militia can be directed by Jacques Nazaire Aulard ((Maxwell500)) but is independently-minded and disorganised.

The National Guard is under the command of Louis Philippe, Duc d'Orléans ((Spectre17)).

Deadline for orders is Sunday 13 April.

La Cordeliers - Issue III (Distributed from the Cordeliers to as many districts of Paris as possible)

A Call To Arms for Warriors of Liberty!

By Antoine Durand

The era of royalist tyranny has ended! The Phrygian Guard needs your sons and daughters! We need your firearms and swords. From Cordeliers to Faubourg St Germain I call you to assemble alongside the Phrygians, noble guards of the Throne of Liberty!

What we fight for is not only the end of Monarchy but also the beginning of the Republic of Virtue. The French people from all classes of both men and women must be granted the right to vote over the age of twenty one. The French Republic must rid the corridors of its society of royalist and aristocratic influence by ANY MEANS NECESSARY. The Army and Navy must be reformed and strengthened against the impending threat from the Tyrannical Monarchies of Europe!

La Club de Phrygians offers membership for no cost at all to the poor of France. For those with enough money the cost shall remain low but one that must be paid. All opinions and suggestions can be made by any man or woman who has been given time by the Club. As we speak the entirety of Club de Phrygian's resources are being expended to establish outposts in the many districts of Paris with stations open already to join the Phrygian Guard.

Monsieur Aulard, these men are ready to fight. I will be with the militia, with the people, where I can make a difference. Give us a King to behead, and we will serve with honour!

- "Le Préfet" Renaud de Cartelège

((EDIT: This really makes me prefer a good forum game over an iAAR. It's far more interactive and commanding/fighting with an actual army in Paris is pretty damn awesome.))

Sitting alone in the chambers of the House Nogaret-Lefebvre, Count Jacques was deeply worried. The former minister of Navy, who became mostly passive after his dismissal by the King, heard about the events in Paris, about the coup against the Monarchy he loved and the rumour that the coup leaders want him as one of the most prominent absolutists dead. Yet, as a former officer, he refused to just lay down his arms. Instead, after he sent his wife Isabelle and his three children to Austria, he decided to return to the frontlines of this battle of France.

His aide, Pierre, handed him a piece of paper and a pen. Count Jacques started to write:

Your Majesty,

The recent events in Paris are worrying. I did my best to prevent this treason, I did my best to warn all Frenchmen, but my voice was not heard. Yet, the battle is all but lost, and as before, I am willing to stand up for France and fight those who wish to see our homeland on her knees. Monarchy is a sacred institution by God’s law, and the corrupt system the traitors seek to establish is rotten to the very core, unnatural and unjust. The recent events have shown beyond any reasonable doubt that we must seek to restore Absolutism in France, no matter the cost. The vast but silent majority of priest, aristocrats and the commoners alike support Your Highness, that is certain.

Still, we may need a helping hand if we are to survive. I shall do my best to get the support necessary for the war, if Your Majesty allows me to do so.

Your faithful servant,

Count Jacques Louis Phillipe Fabian de Nogaret-Lefebvre

Count de Nogaret then sealed the letter and handed it to Pierre.

- Deliver it personally to the hands of no one else than his Majesty himself, remember that. You can’t trust anyone these days...

Pierre took the letter and, just before he left Count’s chambers, he was stopped by de Nogaret’s voice:

- Pierre, before you leave... There is one more letter that needs to be delivered.
- Yes, sir?
- Right here. Deliver it, and then take care of Isabelle and our kids, until the traitors are dealt with. Make sure they are safe... they are all I have in this world, Pierre. Tell them they’ll always be in my heart, and that I can’t wait to see them again...

Count de Nogaret then pulled a sealed letter from one of the drawers. Pierre took it, expecting to see a letter for Jacques’ loved ones, but instead, he saw a different name on the sealed letter. Pierre was a bit shocked and red the name aloud:

- His Imperial Highness Emperor Leopold the Second of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, Romanorum Imperator, King in Germany, Bohemia, Croatia and Hungary?
- Yes, Pierre. No one but him, he is the only hope..
- Wha... What is in the letter?
- How dare you, Pierre? You’re a messenger, no more...
- I am very sorry, Sir. But I...
- No “buts”, Pierre. You have a task, so I fail to see a reason why you are still here. Do you expect the Emperor to visit my office or what?
- I’m on my way, sir. Good luck, and... Take care of yourself.
- I will, Pierre. Give my regards to Isabelle...

And so, Pierre delivered the message to King Louis and rode to Austria with a letter, which, without the knowledge of no one else but Count de Nogaret, contained a request for material, financial and military support to the counterrevolution. Jacques considered this move since the very beginning, but decided that the events in Paris are so threatening that the action needs to be taken... right now.

((The numbers of the French Army are too damn high!
Syriana, couldn't the naval personnel just leave their ships, find some weapons and try to reach the capital on land?))

People of Paris, our greatest fears are coming true!

The army, in the hand of Monarchists and enemies of the People, is now marching against our city to devastate it, kill its citizens and put a bloody end to the Revolution! The King has now completely forsaken his People and only desires to destroy Paris to restore Absolutism!

Those brutes won't stop until they won't have destroyed all traces of both the Revolution and our city, and massacred every single family of Paris! But we won't stand idly like cattle, awaiting for slaughter! The Revolution has taught us what are our natural rights, it has taught us how to fight against tyrants and now we must use such knowledge to defeat these maddened brutes and the bloodthirsty nobles that lead them! We either defeat them or they will exterminate us all, all of you!

A battle is coming to Paris, and this battle can only end with victory or death! People of Paris, defend yourselves! Arm yourselves and prepare the barricades! Mobilize yourselves and conscript as many men and women you can! Prepare for the final battle to defend your Freedom, your Revolution and your very lives against the Monarchist butchers. Even the National Guard and the good Duke of Orléans must understand that we can't allow the army to destroy our enlightened capital!

There is no hope in fleeing, we can only fight if we want to live! The reward for victory shall be Freedom and a Republic, wealth for everyone and the end of famine; the reward for defeat will be the complete destruction of Paris and the violent death of all those who are within it!
Arm yourselves, citizens!

Aux armes, citoyens,
Formez vos bataillons,
Marchons, marchons!
Qu'un sang impur
Abreuve nos sillons!

Let it be known that the Duke of Orleans has now made himself a traitor and a would-be regicide. He has sided with those who declaim liberty in theory but would crush it in practice. It is evident that every Frenchman must make with his choice - does he side with the King, who would give the franchise to all men, or with the traitorous Duke of Orleans and his friends, who would deny it to all except for his rabid clique of dogs? All good Frenchmen should rally behind the King of liberty, and strike a blow against this disloyal, un-French clique of - I will not even give them the dignity of Parisian, for I am confident most Parisians are law-abiding men and women.

Rise up, my fellow Frenchmen against the true tyrants - not the King, who would extend due liberty to all men, but against the so-called Republican purveyors of all sorts of vice!

Their Graces the Dukes of Chartres and Montpensier, in my opinion, should do the decent thing and take it upon themselves to arrest or otherwise stop their traitorous father. Such an act would be a service to God, to a free France, and naturally to their King
