OOC:Well in such an event what I would suggest if he wants to get a foreigner on the throne, he won't have to use his personal wealth, but rather the money of his foreign backer and thus bribe the nobility that way.

((I think alot of people have issues that they have historical characters with neither title nor money. My character was the third largest landowner in Poland, however I start out the same as a country bumpkin from the Eastern Fringes. It makes bribes for a guy with 105 clout no better then a bribe for a guy with 60 clout, and removes alot of the historical barriers between people.))

OOC:I understand but the reasoning for this is, I don't want anyone else to have a massive advantage over everyone else just as the game starts, its all for the sake of balance. However if you all wish I can change the stats to reflect more historical starts.

Also, IRC is a good friend Imperator, even if on for 10 minutes.))

((OOC: It's not so much that some players have an advantage over others, more how there was nothing to barter from the beginning. I mean if each player started with 100 estates, then the king could have made some under the table deals giving 5 estates to one, 8 estates to another, etc. So that rather than an empty title, those bribed would actually gain something from it. And the Jews who were not allowed to hold lands, would instead have their banking, where they'd have money they could use to bribe, which could then be used by the electors to bribe.))

The Coronation of King Jakub I Ludwik Sobieski
Jakub_Ludwik_Sobieski_in_1691_by_an_anonymous_Silesian_artist.jpg

The son of the deceased King Jan III Sobieski, Jakub ascended the throne of the Commonwealth after being elected by the nobility. Some whisper that he is attempting to found a dynasty and establish absolutism in the Commonwealth. Now that he is the rightfully elected King, it is up to Sobieski to reign over the Commonwealth, but he must remember as King his postion is not absolute and most power belongs with the Sejm.

All stats have been upgraded to be more historical and new types of Estates have been added. The first Orders will be due, Midnight Wednesday EST.

The House of Sieniawski sends our congratulations to His Majesty and Excellency the King of Poland and Grand-Duke of Lithuania, our beloved ruler, Jakub I Ludwik Sobieski, on his rightful election to the throne of the Commonwealth.

I look forward, with great anticipation, to Your Majesty's long and enlightened reign, much akin to the fondly remembered tenure of Your late father.

Confident in Your Majesty’s capable judgement, I make no request for a position in the State Administration or the Royal Household, but were I called upon to serve the Union in whatever manner Your Majesty sees fit, I would gladly render such service to my fullest capacity.

(OOC: Not sure my stats are that historical. House Lubomirski's economic foundation were based upon massive salt mines in the province of Krakow (manufactory?) and they later opened up more mines. Their income from their salt mines they used to start loaning out money to even the richest families (banking). Those unable to pay their debts had their properties taken (Estates). Around 1650 they were the third richest family in Poland-Lithuania (and the Deluge cost the Radziwill much of their wealth in 1660), leaving only the Ostrog as their competitors for the title of the richest family, through them holding the Ostrog Ordination.

Theofilia Zasławski became the only heir to the Ostrog and thereby the Ostrog Ordination. This ordination was the largest one in the Volhynia, accounting for 11,000 square kilometres (4,200 sq mi) – about a third of the Volhynian Voivodeship – with over 1,000 settlements, including several dozen towns. As a result of her marriage to Josef Karol Lubomirski, the large landed estates of the Ostrogski Ordination were transferred to the Lubomirski family. The combined fortune of Zasławskis and Lubomirskis would become for a time the largest fortune in the Commonwealth.)

A letter to His Majesty King Jakub I Ludwik Sobieski

The opportunity to serve the Crown of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is a high honour, and I am most grateful to His Majesty for the appointment as Commander of the Army of Courland.

Having journeyed from Sieniawski Palace in the south, to the Baltic frontier, I was surprised to discover, upon my arrival, that the Army of Courland was in disarray.

The infantry are a ragtag band of vagrants who seem to know nothing of military discipline. The artillery division is no better. So poor was their training that when issuing the customary gun salute to signal my arrival, the artillerymen had loaded their cannon with live ammunition. It is perhaps fortunate that their aim was so terrible that even at close range they missed my carriage. The only redeeming feature of the Army of Courland is the cavalry. The synchronised clicking of hooves, the gleaming breastplates of the mounted warriors, the glistening tip of the lance with the red and white pennant proudly fluttering in the breeze; with well-practised precision the cavalry offer a welcome departure from an otherwise unbecoming fighting corps.

The Army of Courland is charged with the dual duty of defending the Commonwealth from Romanov incursions from the East and Swedish intrusions from the North. After reviewing the troops, I must confide that I have little confidence that, in their present state, they are capable of doing either. Of course, we must conceal this information from the Commonwealth’s many enemies, who would doubtless relish the opportunity to exploit our weakness.

I imagine, however, that the current Duke of Courland, Friedrich Kettler, is of dubious allegiance to the Commonwealth. The German duke has cemented his ties to Prussia through his recent matrimony to Elisabeth Sophie of Brandenburg, daughter of the Friedrich Wilhelm, the Elector of Brandenburg and the Duke of Prussia. While the Duke of Courland professes ostensible allegiance to the Polish-Lithuanian Crown, there can be little question as to where his true loyalties lie. Moreover, it is rumoured that preparations are underway for the Duke of Courland to receive a diplomatic delegation from Russia, including Tsar Peter himself. Your Majesty, Duke Friedrich Kettler of Courland is a Polish vassal only in name and our frontier is especially vulnerable on account of the Duke’s ambiguous fidelity to the Crown as well as his frequent and cordial overtures to our enemies. I will keep a close eye on events in Courland and report all relevant affairs to Your Majesty and the Sejm.

As Your Majesty has seen it fit to bestow upon me the honour of serving as the Commander of the Army of Courland, an honour for which I am grateful, there is a request which I hope Your Majesty will consider. The ancestral holdings of the House of Sieniawski are all situated in the southwest of the Commonwealth, a great distance from my current posting in Courland. It is regarded, even in the most far flung reaches of the Commonwealth, as proper for a nobleman to maintain a household in keeping with his social standing. Having no inheritance in these northeastern regions, the House of Sieniawski appeals to Your Majesty’s munificence in requesting the grant of an estate in Windawa, at the mouth of the River Venta, and the Województwo inflanckie (Inflanty Voivodeship) in order to improve the administration in the Livonian provinces as an initial step to securing the long-term loyalty to the Polish-Lithuanian Crown of the villages along the River Dzwina.
