Early 1954
Soviet Union - After years of experimenting, the Soviet scientists Andrei Sakharov and Vitaly Ginzburg seem to have made a breakthrough in the construction of a thermonuclear fusion bomb. Although there is no prototype of such a device, the Soviet Union will undoubtedly push forward to achieve that goal.
Indochina - In the last months, the morale of the French forces seems to have been broken after years of fighting in difficult terrain and being confronted with an increasing will for independence among the local population.
Another offensive by the Viet Minh, that pushed back the French forces to the outskirts of Hanoi and caused serious casualties, made the French Government negotiate with the local political movements.

Finally a plan was put into practice, that would divide Indochina into three sovereign countries: Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. In Vietnam, where the Viet Minh had major influence, but could not completely defeat conservative elements, a rather social democratic Government came to power, while Cambodia and Laos got centrist governments. Cambodia, however, was not willing to completely break its ties with the former colonial power and signed a treaty for economic cooperation with the Republic of France.
Colombia - The government of Colombia, obviously supported by the United States of America, started a final operation versus the MLPC and succeeds. It pushes the Rebel organization back to the southernmost parts of the country. According to reports, remnants of them left the country or threw away their weapons to hide in villages or in the jungle. Anyway, the MLPC has disbanded and the rebellion is over.
Tunisia - The warlike situation in Tunisia got worse for the French forces, when the Independence Movement got more momentum. So far being in control of most of the countryside, severe fighting broke out in southern cities as Gabes and Sfax. According to news reports, the whole country south of Gades is now in the hands of the local forces, while fighting over the control of Sfax, Mahdia and Al-Qayrawan continues.
Algeria - In 1830, France began the invasion and occupation of Algeria. During the next decades, the local population resisted this invasion, until the Tuareg agreed to a peace treaty in 1917. As of 1911, several political movements ranging from moderate to radical were established, among them the People`s Party of Algeria (PPA), that radicalized itself during World War II.
Tensions between natives and settlers were growing, and in 1945 the situation escalated, when roughly 100 people were killed in riots and the French army killed at least 6.000 people in the massacres of Setif and Guelma.

In 1946 the UDMA, a party inspired by Atatürk, was established and won the elections for the Algerian assembly with 71% of the votes. In 1947 the French National Assembly debated about Algeria`s status, but opted to maintain the status quo.
Still in 1947, the independence movement Front de Libération Nationale (FLN)was established and organized the resistance against the French colonial regime. Now, in 1954, it started violent resistance and a war for the independence of the African country has started.
Nigeria -In the second half of the 19th century, the United Kingdom occupied Nigeria and governed it until the 1930s, when the first Independence Movements evolved, such as the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP) established by Herbert Macaulay.
During the second World War, where Nigerian natives fought for the United Kingdom, calls for Independence got louder. Now the British Government is faced with a broad movement, that demands a way to Independence.
