The Bkorgj Y'katanate

c7556276-2a97-4be7-a852-b1fd4d31b76f.jpg

The Red River and Kayl Client states mistakenly listed as non-existant

History: In what we now know as the Bkorgj Peninsula was a variety of infighting tribes living off the steppes. However it all changed when a man named Bkor Bkorgjjik viewed the numerous herds of forest elephants that lived in the not-so-harmony that was the Bkorgj Pre-Domestication Period. Taking cue from Jhu nomadic traders that traveled up and down the continent, he is said to have stolen a baby elephant at night and raised it as his own, becoming the first Bkorgja Rider. This is assumed to have happened around 1,370 ST.

Bkor then used his new riding ability to seize control of his tribe (the Jjik) and start a crusade of consultation in the peninsula. It is unknown when this campaign was finished, however the by 1,385 ST, the first refugees from the south (notably the Jhu) started arriving at the Xai Kingdom. Late-Xai records show the that these refugees came in such mass that the border towns of the south were overwhelmed, perhaps leading to the delay of Xai reaction to the first invasions of their land.

Invasion and Conquest of the Xai: In 1,390 the large garrison town of Bue in southern Xai was razed to the ground following their refusal to submit to the Bkorgj Y'katanate. Many smaller and less impressive towns had fallen or were destroyed by the Y'katanate earlier, but a conjunction of events (See Kayl Rebellion [also known as the Third Xai-Kayl War] and the Red River Wars) along with the immigrant crisis meant that the Xai were not able to react in time.

The first documented battle between the Xai and the Bkorgj was between the General Wu Yi and the Y'Katan himself. The Xai had amassed their veteran soldiers from the Third Xai-Kayl War along a massive peasant contingent in order to turn back the Bkorgj. The Xai had overwhelming numbers, however the Y'Katan used his elephants to their greatest effectiveness (some think without really his full knowledge) by sending his riders into the most impressive looking Xai formations. Overwhelming and demoralizing some of the most powerful units in the Kingdom. Fear of God put into them, thinking the apocalypse had come, the peasant and Kayl formations routed, leaving only the core veteran units to hold the rear guard. What happened was a slaughter, as unforgiving Xai soldiers were pushed together and stepped on by elephants or set on fire by a rather cunning general who used the dry grass field as the kindling to set a fire that would burn the Xai soldiers alive.

General Wu Yi's eyes were sent to the capital city of Goung-Pai, along with a emasculated Xai veteran with the message of surrender or death. King Huang Xai, sent his family to Kayl and marched out to meet the Bkorgj. What happened there is not quite known, as no Xai who was there was able to recount their stories (due to a lack of tongue, eyes, hands or a mix of all three) and the Bkorgj at that time did not have writing. What is known is the legend of the King Huang Xai fighting Bkor Bkorgjjik in one-on-one combat, only to be killed by a club smash to the head. Recent archeological digs show massive peasant columns fleeing from battlefield and Xai soldiers fighting one another. It is assumed that the Kayl levies turned on their Xai oppressors in their time of need. This is strengthened by the Kayl client state forged following the fall of Goung-Pai and the Kingdom itself.

Aftermath: The Y'katanate had an interesting way of conquest. They allowed a city to surrender, then executed those in charge and established a new ruling class loyal to the Y'Katan for their livelihood, or set the entire city on fire and sent the skulls back to Goung-Pai. The remnants of the Skull Throne of the Y'Katan (an internationally renowned World Heritage Site, though the Xai diaspora still protest it and demand it's complete destruction) are still available to public viewing in Old Gaung-Pai. The Kayl and Red River Client Kingdoms were established following the Fall of the Xai.

Death of Bkor: Following the destruction of the Xai, Bkor (estimated age 57) died of alcohol poisoning in the year 1,403 ST. Succession was surprisingly simple, as Bkor drowned all sons that he had following the birth of his first son, Latki. Declared Y'Katan Latki Bkorgjjik, he would lead the Y'katanate to a formulated state. All sons following the first son were drowned, all peoples who were prosecuted given an opportunity as a client state, and ritual mutilation of all defeat enemies.

Death of Latki: Y'Katan Latki died in combat against the stone age tribes of the Great Farui Forest in 1,469 ST. His only son Jerlo became the third Y'Katan following this, and led a campaign to exterminate the forest tribes. By 1,500 ST, all tribes east of the Great Farui Forest were dead, subjects of the Y'katanate or belonging to the Farui Kingdom client state.

Religion: The Religion of the Bkorgj is interestingly simple. To die in combat was a gift, to die in peace was a curse. Mutilating a body allowed you take control of the mutilated in the afterlife. The only "God" of this belief is Bkor, Holy Warrior of the Bkorgj and judge of all who seek entrance to the afterlife.

The Tamarian Empire

forum game.jpg
Great Cities of the Empire: Black-Munzarta, Orange-Orzonia, Purple-Anzar Lorosopola, Green-Zeltorno, Blue-Frezonia

Introduction:Founded on the Island now known as Tamaria by the ancient prophet Munzar, the Tamarians are a warrior society who are excellent seafarers and infantrymen. The Tamarians are a society who value both men and women equally and both fight as warriors and sailors in the army and navy. While they mainly reside on the coasts the inland parts of the island have a lot of religious significance to the Tamarians. The capital of the Empire is the great city of Munzarta whose walls are near impregnable. The rulers of the Empire are called Mortazar (female version Mortazaria), translated as Supreme Autocrat in the Tamarian language who is also the supreme religious leader of the Tamarians. The empire uses a calendar starting at Munzar's arrival (MZA).

History:
Before the Prophet's arrival
The centuries before the prophet arrived on Tamaria, not much is known. It is believed that a great Kingdom known as Yunzaland ruled much of the island. There Kingdom lasted several centuries until it vanished mysteriously. Afterwards the island was made up of several different tribes that fought each other but none was able to unite the island again until the prophet arrived.

The Birth of the Empire
0-40 MZA,(780 ST) The reign of Mortazar Munzar I "the Holy Conqueror" - The prophet Munzar arrives on the island and establishes his city, he and his followers subjugate the neighboring tribes. Munzar declares himself the first Mortazar. Munzar passes away leaving his ever growing empire to his son Latakas.
40-87 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Latakas I "The Lawgiver" -Latakas I formalizes the Tamarian faith and its pantheon of gods declaring the Mortazar is the head of the faith. He continues his father conquest of the island and establishes several new cities. Latakas I dies with nearly the entire island in the hands of the Tamarians, his young son Monzatra ascends to the throne.
87-167 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Monzatra I "The Old" -Monzatra I coming to the throne at the age of 17 finishes the conquest of Tamaria by subjugating the last free state, the Kingdom of Qunzar. He establishes several new cities and creates massive peasant farming communes known as Taliks to increase agricultural output. Despite his long reign all of this sons dies in childhood and the empire is left to his daughter Sallaria.
167-203 MZA, The reign of Mortazaria Sallaria I "The Fair" -With her father died without a son Sallaria ascended the throne, renowned for her beauty and intelligence, she established equality of the sexes in domestic and military affairs. She died when a coup was launched by the traitorous general, Talanan, killed her and took the throne beginning the Era of Chaos.

The Era of Chaos
203-205 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Talanan I "The Usurper" -The first Mortazar to not be a blood descendant of the prophet, he seized power in a bloody coup backed by the Imperial Guard. His brutal policy's and illegitimate reign led to him getting deposed by the eldest son of Sallaria I and loyal warriors. He was publicly executed in the city square of Munzarta to the cheers of the people.
205-210 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Latakas II "The Good" -The eldest son of Sallaria I, while he was a good kind man, he faced an Empire in chaos caused by the coup of Talanan including a rebellion led by Talanan's son, Talazar. While he was victorious the good Mortazar became violently ill and passed away after only 5 years on the throne. His younger brother Millazar succeeded him.
210-230 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Millazar I "The Cruel" -The second son of Sallaria I, unlike his brother, Millazar I was brutal tyrant who ruled by fear. He executed several prominent nobles, earning him there eternal hatred, he was killed by a noblemen named Louzanas who gave the crown to Millazar's only brother whom Millazar had not killed, Munzar, bringing the Era of Chaos to an end.

The Era of Light
230-266 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Munzar II "The Holy" -A deeply religious man, Munzar II built a great temple to the main god of the Tamarian pantheon, Anzar Loros, in the center of the island. With his reign being relatively peaceful this not endear him to the warrior class who saw him as weak. His death was peaceful and the empire went to his son, Latakas.
266-315 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Latakas III "The Warrior" -Unlike his father, Latakas III was a warrior at heart and attempted to expand the Empire but he was only moderately successful taking only a few of the small islands around Tamaria. The rest of his reign he spent building new monuments including the Great Gate of Munzarta. He died a sword fighting accident, he was succeeded by his son Zortas.
315-317 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Zortas I- The only surviving son of Latakas III, Zortas I was a sickly man but was very intelligent. In his short reign he established the Talanar system of governance. Ending the feudal like structure of the Empire where warrior aristocrats ruled the provinces of empire and succeeded by there kin. The Talanar system was bureaucratic with Imperial governors appointed by the Mortazar. He died after an illness and succeeded by his uncle Monzatra.
317-332 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Monzatra II "The Mighty"- After succeeding his nephew on the Throne, Monzatra faced a massive uprising of the aristocracy, who opposed the new Talanar system. He brutally crushed them and formalized the Talanar system in the Empire's legal code. He died at the age of 97 in his sleep succeeded by his grandson Latakas.
332-386 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Latakas IV "The Just"- A man of great honor and just rule, Latakas IV's rule is considered the height of the Era of Light. During his reign he established the Imperial Senate as an advisory committee composed of the great noble houses of the Empire. He also undertook several expeditions of exploration to find new lands for the Empire to conquer one day. He died peacefully in his sleep being succeeded by his son Munzar.
386-410 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Munzar III "The Dragon"- A man whom man consider unworthy of having the name of the prophet, mainly due to his brutal and wicked policy's. He killed all of his brother's believing they would try to overthrow them. He also killed his only son Zortas in a fit of rage. He then began a brutal campaign of terror killing member of all classes from the highest nobility to the poorest peasant. He was killed after he abducted a prominent senator's daughter and the senator challenged him to a duel in which he was slain. His reign marked the end of the Era of Light, he was succeed by his daughter Laurana.

The Era of Uncertainty
410-455 MZA, The reign of Mortazaria Laurana I "The Lustful"- After her father was slain in a duel, Laurana ascended the throne, while she was a competent ruler she was known for being extremely lustful and had numerous affairs with both men and women. She ruled the Empire competently but her affairs angered many of the conservative members of the Imperial Senate who saw her lustful ways as immoral. The warriors however loved her who saw her promiscuity as a sign of strength. She died after after falling from a balcony in a drunken orgy. She was succeeded by her son Latakas.
455-479 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Latakas V "The Calm"- A man known for his calmness and patience, he began several reforms to further centralize the Imperial government. Due to his calm and reserved nature he managed to avoid upsetting the Imperial nobility or the warrior class. He died when his Imperial barge caught fire while sailing on Lake Linkana. He was succeeded by his third son Millazar.
479-501 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Millazar II "The Quarreler"- With his elder brothers having died in the in the Imperial barge fire, Millazar succeeded to the throne. He was known to have a quite a temper and always seemed to be arguing with someone earning him his epithet. He angered the priesthood by marrying his 14 year old niece, Zelapia. His temper got the better of him when a senator criticized his taxation policy and he flew into a rage, he challenged the senator to a duel and was slain. He was succeeded by his four year old son Zortas.
501-511 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Zortas II "The Unfortunate"- After his father was slain in a duel, the four year old Zortas II ascended the throne. He was the first Mortazar to ascended the throne as a child, a regency led by his mother Zelapia was formed. He was a very devout child and took his religious duties very seriously. However he and his mother soon grew to despise each other due to his zealotry and his mother's lustful nature. When he was 14 he went to the Great Temple in the center of island where he was stabbed by a unknown assassin, many believe his mother was behind the assassination.
511-525 MZA, The reign of Mortazaria Zelapia I "The Wicked"- The daughter of the eldest son of Latakas V, Prince Munzar, she married her uncle Millazar II. She was almost certainly behind her son's death considering how quickly she ascended the throne after his death with the help of her lover the Captain of the Imperial Guard, Rozors whom she took as her new husband. She was a brutal woman who reigned like a tyrant. She was also believed to be a heretic and worshiped only the dark god, Tanzar Lizas but this was never proven. Her death was rather strange, she was in a temple praying when suddenly a meteorite struck the temple causing the statue of Anzar Loros to fall on her, many consider this a true sign of divine displeasure. Her brother in law Lekazas succeeded her.
525-534 MZA, The reign of Mortazar Lekazas I "The Priest"- The youngest son of Latakas V, he had long since become a priest and was thus forgotten by most people. However when his sister in law/niece died he was retrieved from the temple and was given the crown. His reign was uneventful and despite his age he was able to conceive a child, and died in his sleep. He was succeeded by his daughter, Sallaria.
525-625 MZA, The reign of Mortazaria Sallaria II "The Kind"- Ascending to the throne at the age of five, the Imperial Senate governed for her during her minority. When she came of age at 16 she married a great warrior named Ankabar, who pleased both the senate and the warrior class. She reigned just fully and kindly. She build several great monuments during her reign including Munzarta's first ever aqueduct. During her reign the sport of Lezampa was introduced, a brutal game where two teams try to get a leather ball into a small oval shaped hole using only there feet. Her hundred year long reign is the longest in Tamarian history, she passed away at the age of 105 in her sleep. She was succeeded by her son Munzar.
625-632 MZA, The reign on Mortazar Munzar IV "The Old"- Ascending to throne at the age of 82, he was oldest person to ever ascend the throne. His rather short reign was uneventful though he did complete the construction of the Great Lezampa Stadium in Munzarta started during his mother's reign. He died of the great plague that swept the empire during the last year of his reign and that almost killed the entire Imperial family. He was succeeded by his grandson Monzatra.
632-666 MZA, The reign on Mortazar Monzatra III "The Simple"- One of the few surviving members of the Imperial family after the great plague swept the empire. He was known for his lack of intelligence and the Imperial Senate used this to there advantage, its power growing greatly during his reign. The warrior class, fearful, that the Senate would take complete control of the state, revolted in the Mortazar's name. The bloody civil war ended only when the Mortazar agreed to abdicate to his son Latakas. He spent the remainder of his life in a temple serving as a priest.
666-708 MZA, Mortazar Latakas VI "The Magnificent"- His reign began when his father abdicated and he was handed the crown of an empire ravaged by plague and civil war. Unlike his father, Latakas VI, was extremely intelligent. He regained many powers that the crown had lost during his father's reign. He also lowered taxes dramatically, this allowed the Empire's economy to recover from the devastation of plague and civil war. He also started a reform of the Imperial military, establishing a professional officer corps rather then just relying on the aristocracy. He died during a game of Lezampa which he played well into old age, most likely of a heart attack. His reign marked the end of the Era of Uncertainty, he was succeeded by his son also named Latakas.

The Era of New Hope
708-720 (Present) MZA, The reign of Mortazar Latakas VII "The Wise"- Since ascending the throne, Latakas VII, has done well as Mortazar, he has reigned justly and competently. The empire's future looks bright and many believe it is time for the Empire to expand overseas and bring more wealth and slaves to the empire.

Religion:The Tamarian faith is known as Munzarianism, named after its founder the prophet Munzar I, the main god in the pantheon is the god of light and ruler of the universe, Anzar Loros, the other major deities are the god of war, Torganar, Sharanaia, the goddess of the sea, and Tanzar Lizas, the god of darkness and ruler of the underworld. The priests of the faith are known as Munzaros, the Mortazar is the official head of the faith and can excommunicate any member of the church for any reason.

Culture:Tamarian culture is militaristic and with a strict class system with the warrior aristocrats at the top and the peasantry at the bottom. With the sexes being legally equal men and women can both be warriors, be members of the Imperial Senate, and the Priesthood. Slavery is common in Tamarian society with most slaves being descendants of conquered peoples. The poor can also sell themselves into slavery to pay off debt with a length of the time being dependent on the amount of debt. Homosexuality and bisexuality are entirely accepted in the Empire but polygamy is forbidden, the priesthood are allowed to marry but only with fellow clergy.

Economy:The empire's economy is mainly agricultural with sea trade playing an important role as well. The merchant class however is looked down upon by the nobility but there are seen as a necessary part of the economy. The peasant agricultural communes (Taliks) are run by peasants appointed directly by the Imperial governors. On the coastline fishing is also a important and profitable industry and fish is the main source of meat for the empire.

Military:The Tamarian military is made up of two important groups. One is the warrior class who spend there whole life training for war, they are usually armed with long rectangular shaped shields, short stabbing swords, and chain mail armor. The second class is made up of non-warrior class (usually conscripted peasants) who serve as spearmen, archers, and javelin throwers. Cavalry is usually made up of aristocratic members of the warrior class who can afford the gear and the horse to become a cavalrymen.

The Kingdom of Zahardan

FPOuO6n.png

The Location of Zahardan along with the cities of Erashan (black), Rishad (blue), Turan (Orange) and New Therandis (red)

Introduction

Around the year 800 the Nahirleri first began colonizing the Hardos Mountains, the new settlements quickly began to prosper thanks largely to the mineral resources in the Mountains which the colonists were able to sell expensively to both the Nahirleri cities on the Aresna as well as the Qaseem Desert Tribes to the East and West.

History

Around the year 800 the Nahirleri began to settle in the Hardos Mountains. The settlements quickly grew in size and prosperity with the largest, Erashan, quickly becoming a small city. The archeological and written records, or lack of them, from the period show that the colonists were largely poorer people from the Nahirleri cities along the Aresna although around 900 the increase in the number of written records as well as their content show that their was an increasing number of more prosperous immigrants such as merchants or skilled craftsmen arriving from the south.

Around the year 950 the city of Therandis was burnt to the ground, the surviving population, including the majority of the city's leaders as well as the suvivors fo the city's army, managed to escape and flee to the north. Led by Niketas Komanes, leader of the Therandian military from 940-950, the survivors managed to reach the Hardos Mountains. The refugees were welcomed to the area by the Nahirleri who had very few soldiers, not long after approval of the decision came from the King of the Nahirleri. For 50 years the people of the Hardos prospered until around the year 1000 when the King of the Nahirleri was toppled in a Palace Coup. The new King, Armazuddar III, immediately ordered the expulsion of the refugees from Therandis.

The refugees had been living in the Hardos for nearly 50 years and many had intermarried with the locals, the Nahirleri settlers had become increasingly detached from their homelands and the culture and religion in the Hardos was very different from that along the Aresna. Led by Gabriel Komanes, grandson of Niketas, the people of the Hardos declared their independence from the Nahirleri Kingdom and immediately assembled an army to fight the Armazuddar. The King was incensed at the news of the rebellion and ordered the army assembled and readied to march north.

The Royal Palace in Erashan

In early 1002 Armazuddar moved north towards the Hardos with a force of 20,000 men. Gabriel meanwhile had assembled a force of 10,000 well trained and well equipped troops. Moving towards Erashan, which had been made the capital of the new Kingdom of Zahardan, Armazuddar was confident that he would be easily victorious. However on the night of the 11th of September 1002 Armazuddar's army was ambushed by the forces of Gabriel. The battle was a complete slaughter with Komanes himself leading a charge down the enemy center which cut the column in half and resulted in the capture of the King. From there it was a simple task of chasing down the survivors. By nightfall the majority of the enemy force had been cut down or captured.

With this victory the independence of the new Kingdom was assured. Gabriel was quickly crowned King of Zahardan in a ceremony in Erashan and he immediately married the daughter of one of only 2 nobles who had colonised the area thereby cementing the unity of the two peoples. After this victory the people of the Hardos began to expand and by the year 1300 had reached the northern coast. Many of the Zahardandi began moving into the new area and cities and towns began to spring up along the coast of the river Gabriad while smaller villages began to appear in the forests around the river.

Economy and Geography:

The majority of the population of the Kingdom of Zahardan is located in the Hardos Mountains and the foothills. The largest cities in Zahardan are including the Capital Erashan are all located in the Hardos. The economy of Zahardan is quite diverse with the rich soil around the Gabriad river producing quite significant amounts of food while the Hardos Mountains themselves produce large amounts of mineral resources which are then refined in the large cities of Erashan, Rishad and Turan. The only major city that is not located in the Hardos is New Therandis which was constructed around the year 1300 along the southern coast. It is a major trade center due to it's location between Hallenis and Nahirleri. Outside the Hardos Mountains Zahardan is quite flat with few hills. The Zahardani also trade with the Qaseem selling them metal products in exchange for goods from the desert.

Warfare

The Zahardani army is a well-equipped fighting force with an infantry core that fights in the phalanx formation of the Hallenics while the archers and cavalry fight in the Nahirleri fashion. The Zahardani also have their own unique force of heavily armoured cavalry pioneered by Gabriel Komanes himself. The Zahardani also possess a small navy of only a few ships based in New Therandis.

Culture and Religion

The Zahardani culture is a mixture of the Nahirleri and Hallenic cultures, the religion on the other hand is unique to Zahardan. It is a pantheon of several major gods and countless minor ones with the principle god being Harzan, God of Earth. The Erashan Academy, built by Niketas II in 1410 is home to perhaps the largest concentration of scholars and philosophers in the known world while the Great Library of Erashan is almost certainly the largest collection of scholarly works in the world. Zahardani houses are usually built in two parts separated by a central courtyard. The rear part of the house is usually larger then the rear and as many shopkeepers and craftsmen live in the same building as they work the front part is usually used as a shop, blacksmith, etc...

Harpaxan Civilisation in the Iron Age

Borders of the Neo-Haraxan Empire at 1500 ST (938 at). Historians dispute the official border between the Tamarian and Haraxan Empires, due to the constant raids and operations into each other's lands; most historians accept the coast as being solidly Haraxan throughout this period, while the interior of the island changed hands multiple times, both before and after 1500 ST.

History of the Harpaxan Confederation and the Neo-Haraxan Empire (1000 ST-1500 ST)

The period from 950 ST to 1200 ST (388 AT – 638) is referred to as the Harpaxan Confederation (Harapaxi Heharinate in Harpaxi); during this time, trade with the Azeratii and other tribes flourished, as did conflict between those confederacies.

It was in 1148 ST that Xraalani Lloraxi of Theron began a spree of conquest, bent on re-establishing the Haraxan Empire; by the time of his death in 1176, almost half of the old Empire was back under the control of the Haraxi Dynasty and the city of Theron was again recognised as the most important city in Harpaxa. However, it would not be until the reign of Lloraxi’s grandson, Hanarix II Artaxian that the Ka-Haraxi Xraalinate (Neo-Haraxan Empire) was established in 1197 ST (635 AT). Some historians believe that another reason the Neo-Haraxan Empire was re-established was to stave off the threat of the Tamarian Empire, which at the time was on a rampage through their northern lands (furthermore, the Tamarian landing displaced the Jukarix Batarizi, who fled south and were causing further stress on the Harpaxan lands).

Hanarix’s son, Titran IV, continued his father’s aggressive policies, going on an extended campaign against the Tamarian Empire (who were in the process of raising an army to conquer the Haraxan lands on the island); the war ultimately saw a reversal of favour against the Tamarians. By the war’s end, the Haraxan lands were largely restoed. His death in 1289 ST saw the Empire reach its greatest extent up to that point.

Parnarix III Halina (the Tall) reigned over a time of relative peace and stability; despite increased raiding from Dardyne pirates, profits from trade continued to fill the Imperial Treasury, which led to lower taxes and broad improvements to the infrastructure, administration, and general state of the Empire, as well as a series of monuments to the Empire being constructed to show off its wealth and splendour.

Parnarix III died in 1317 ST without a male heir, and the Empire seemed poised to collapse into civil war between his nephews for the throne; his youngest daughter Misarani however, through a mix of intrigue and negotiation, managed to secure the Throne for herself. When her cousin, who was already styling himself Titran V, attempted to claim the throne, rather than brutally crush his insurrection, she invited him to Theron and offered to marry his son and proclaim him Xaraali (Governor) of the North. Contented, the would-be Titran V surrendered his forces the following week. Her reign, which many consider the height of the New Empire, followed the same pattern; rather than expend precious resources and manpower on a spree of conquest, as her ancestors had done, she cajoled and manoeuvred her way into expansion, and gained a fair number of allies and puppet states along the way; she was not, however, opposed to using force if needed.

A tribe of Suz’Kh who had established a small port town (which Misarani saw as potential trade hub) would bear witness to her command of strategy; she invited the leader of the city (who was referred to as the Lord of Bones in the Empire due to his odd tendency to make clothing out of his fallen foe’s remains) to Theron, whilst she covertly sailed troops several miles to the west of the town. As the Lord of Bones’ ship had reached the halfway point, his Haraxan entourage fired upon it, right as Haraxan legions charged into his city. Throughout her reign, the Tamarians remained mostly quiet, though some incursions into Imperial territory were repulsed.

By the time of her death in 1348 ST, Misarani Sharrtaxian (the Magnificent) had nearly doubled the size of the Empire, quadrupled the Imperial treasury, and in general left the Empire in a position of power. Her son, Teranix Iltraxian (the Good) would, like his grandfather, be largely regarded as a peaceable ruler, left the Empire upon his death a little poorer, but also with the greatest roadways, the cleanest cities, and the happiest people. However, his reign saw the military neglected and the Dardyne pirates exploited this wherever possible.

Xraalani Icarix, who took the throne in 1382 ST, is regarded by historians to be a capable, if dreadfully dull, Xraalani; his reign was marked with continued peace (though some refer to it as stagnation). Also during his reign, the Tamarians began a series of successful raids and were pushing deeper into Haraxan lands.

Parnarix IV Valisa (the Rotund) took to the throne upon his father’s death in 1407 ST; his reign, as evidenced by his immense girth, was a period of extravagance and excess for the nobility. This did however seem to have a positive effect on their puppets, who were awed by the displays of wealth. During his reign, little of note happened, save further attacks by the Tamarians. Imperial revenues start to drop slightly in the latter years of his rule.

This long period of general peace came to an end during the reign of Hanarix III Loranxi (the Wall) when, in the twenty-sixth year of his reign, the Empire’s long standing allies and trade partners, the Azeratii Confederation, was conquered by the Aryan Empire (Aryani Xraalinate); he quickly organised his forces to prepare for a possible attack on his realm, which eventually came in 1482 ST. The Aryan forces soon had seized all the lands west of the Marit Parnari, save for the fortress city of Loranxi; Hanarix III himself sailed in the city to command its defence.

After over two years of siege, the Aryan forces, tired of doing nothing, marched back east of the river and offered peace with the Empire, which Hanarix III wisely accepted. The two empires shortly thereafter began trading. Whilst the Aryans quickly began absorbing much of Harpaxan culture, the citizens of the Haraxan Empire largely seemed to disdain Aryan culture, which they believed was backwards.

The Tamarian Empire as well made inroads into the Imperial lands early in his reign; twice they besieged Paranxi, and it was only due to the strength of the Haraxan Navy that both assaults failed. Since the end of the war with the Aryans, Hanarix has devoted most of his energies to pushing back the northern threat.

Note on Culture and Religion

Prior to meeting the Tamarian and Aryan Empires, slavery was quite the common practice in the Empire, particularly in what little mining happened within its borders, as well as agriculture. However, after fighting several wars with the two Empires, both of whom were well known for their practice of slavery, many Harpaxans began to disdain the practice as barbaric; by 1500 ST, the use slavery was becoming an increasingly rare instance, largely confined to only mining and the largest plantations and farms in the Empire.

During this time, the Cult of Genasiazi became a popular mystical and philosophical group within the Empire; while the cult's membership rarely numbered more than 5,000 at any time (according to most sources), it helped guide and lead the cultural flourishing of the Empire during the reign if Xraalanis Misarani Sharrtaxian.

Pirateers In History: Harpaxan Edition
Sokorax, Scourge or Imperial?

Starting in the early 1140's up till 1151, the Sokorax Scourge refers to the reign of terror induced by pirate captain Sokorax in the northern waters of the Harpaxan Peninsula. What brought such historical notice and infamy to this particular man was both his alleged backstory and ruthless cunning.

News first spread of Sokorax due his biggest boast, that he was a pure descendent, a great-great-great grandson [The amount of greats are often differing across multiple stories], of Titran III, claiming that one child survived the horrid Great Plague, and was whisked away by a kindly nurse who sought to save the child. Nearly all historians find the story an obvious fake, and no doubt the same would be thought back then, if not for the risk of speaking otherwise. Sokorax was a vain man, and disbelief of his ancestry was met with swift violence.

An equally, if not moreso, quirk of Sokorax was his degree of intellect, unseen in his particular line of work. As much as he had an ego, he knew not to attract the wrath of certain prominent men, like Xraalani Lloraxi of Theron. Few witnesses ever survived, with those who did worse off than the dead. Sokorax was seemingly a ghost story, told over campfires to young children, scaring the grown men too.

Despite the wealth earned from raiding whatever poor soul presented himself to the Sokorax fleet, headed by the flagship Shagrotrix Batarizi, there truly was no honor among thieves. News of the increasingly powerful Lloraxi, brought murmurs of a Ka-Haraxi Xraalinate, which quickly led to the mutiny. Convinced that Sokorax would bring about a wrath, far mightier than a few measley criminals in boats, the crew marooned him east of the Marizani Altilxi, on the shoreline. In exchange for the great past spent pirating, the crew opted to allow him one handful of plundered goods, and a dagger for protection.

Did Sokorax survive the horrors of the Porazixi Batarizi? Was he truly an heir of Titran III? Does his treasures still remain, hidden away deep in the jungles?

((A short history, but I felt I may as well amuse myself :p))

The Azargath Hetmanate

Early History

There exists little evidence about the early history the Azargath people. All that has been deduced is that they were a polytheistic civilization, worshipping four gods named Suta, Aba, Tazda and Forga. These deities were worshipped as being the embodiments of the four seasons of Summer, Spring, Autumn and Winter. What we do know for certain is that circa 1150 ST, the Azargath begun to heavily utilize horses, both for warfare and internal tasks. By 1300 ST, horses had come to define Azargath society and culture. It was during this time that we see the rise of militarism occur to the previously peaceful Hetmanate. Their culture, once nomadic, began to become more sedentary, especially after their conquest of Variluola.

The Invasion of Variluola

To the south of the Uzbek Mountains, which is where the Hetmanate had previously settled, there existed the mysterious civilization of Variluola. We do not know much about this civilization, but we do know that circa 1400 ST, the Azargath invaded. Utilizing their horses they swept through this unknown civilization, and laid waste to much of its cities. The Variluola culture was destroyed, and was completely replaced by the Azargath. This was accomplished by the Hetmanate’s policy of exterminating all people they came across, a brutal policy that ensured that there would always be room for the Azargath people to live in. By 1500 ST the Variluola civilization no longer existed, and was fully replaced by the Azargath Hetmanate.

AzargathCulture_zpsd081a01e.jpg

This document shows how the Azargath Hetmanate came down from the Uzbek Mountains, and conquered the mysterious Variloula Civilization.

The Shift from a Nomadic Culture to a Sedentary Culture

The Azargath, as espoused earlier, were a nomadic people for much of their existence. Confined to the Uzbek Mountains, they travelled in circular movements, moving from pasture to pasture as the seasons changed. The introduction of Horses, on a large scale, to the Azargath culture is what caused this nomadism to occur, as evidence indicates that the people were semi-sedentary prior to the equine influx. Once the horses became wide-spread the people became fully nomadic. A person’s worth could be attributed to the amount of horses they owned, and as such horses became the hard currency of the Hetmanate. After the Invasion of Variluola, and the settling of the region, the Azargath reverted to a sedentary style of life once again. The vast distances of fertile land they had acquired meant they no longer had to travel constantly to find food for their animals and themselves. As it became easier to settle down and farm the fields, the value of horses diminished. While still seen as an important commodity, the rich gold deposits of the Variluola region meant that Gold became the hard currency of choice. With fertile fields and plentiful mines, the Azargath Hetmanate left behind its nomadic past.

((This is the first part of a Imperial trilogy I have in mind, to bring forth civilization to all sections of the continent.))

Part 1 - Rise of the Levnan Empire (1,000 - 1,126 S.T)

By the turn of the millennium, the policy of Secro Vemnus had been firmly established, and the weakening position of the Interii and their Aristocracy had become a clear consequence. The strength of the executive authority, now appointed by the Revlea Heralim (Popular Assembly), had overtaken the merely symbolic Revlnum and its aristocratic composition. This popular assembly, could be considered as one of the first democratic institutions in the history of the world, if it was not for the nearly absolute authority of the Alta, whose edicts could only be overturned by a 85% vote within both the Revlnum and the Revlea Heralim, both institutions having nearly polar opinions. This power within the hands of the Archon, was not fully realized until the Revlea Heralim elected General Titunium, a popular figure and conqueror of the entirety of the Winter Sea. Titunium, arrived in Levna early spring during the year 1,002 from his campaigns, to accept the Alta. Ambitious and determined, almost immediately after accepting his post, the young General declared the Revlnum invalid, and threatened all Interii against attempting to rebel in opposition to his act. To the shock of the people, the Aristocratic Families complied, no longer possessing the loyalty of the ordinary fighting man, Nevrum Fela. Despite the achievement of such a political victory, Titunium, concerned about later retaliation by the Interii, immediately prepared his armies and sailed west, intent on fighting a war of national unity, while distracting the population from the domestic issues of the day.

It was Titunium, during these wars that lasted over three decades, who instituted the first military reforms from the previous system of Hoplite Warfare. Using a hybrid system of the Phalanx and the Legionary, the Levnan Army became a flexible fighting force, with close formation spear infantry in the front, and with a looser but heavier infantry line in the back. Such a reformation brought the military of Levna into great successes versus the strong, yet deteriorating Lehim people. Stronger funds and a stricter fighting force gave the invading army a advantage, one that Titunium would sustain, eventually completing the conquest by 1,036. Returning home a hero, Titunium was granted absolute power by the assembly for life, and upon his death (it was recorded), the power would return to the people. This was not to be however, as the ambitious perspective of Titunium emerged during his absolute power. Using secretive edicts, Titunium slowly stripped the power of the Assembly until his death, when his appointed successor and adopted son, Veletrix was made Levanii Megos Alta (Emperor and Archon of the Levnaii people.)

Veletrix would rule as a absolutist, disguising the Assembly as a political institution while ruling as one behind closed doors. This new leader, intelligent, cunning, and tactical, soon carried on the image of his father, attempting to bring greater conquests to his reign. Indeed, he did, bringing the legions of Levna to the East, fighting the numerous yet decentralized war-tribes in grueling long conflicts, achieving military success in almost every issue. After the return of Veletrix and his infamous General, Marius Continus from the Eastern Wars, much of the popular perspective had shifted back to the engagements between the Emperor and the Aristocracy. At the head of this Aristocratic faction was Golver of House Raesar, the former head of the Navy and the wealthiest landowner on the island. Veletrix, determined to purge such threats to his authority, warned Golver not to attempt any rebellious actions in the name of Interii , who had grown rich over the eastern conquests. Golver, at this point, refused to be subdued by the Emperor, and called a uprising against Veletrix, raising 36,000 troops to oppose the Imperium. Veletrix was able to drive back his opponent several times, until Marius Continuous betrayed the Emperor and turned half of Veletrix's army against him. It was said by contemporaries at the time describe that during the battle Marius killed Veletrix upon the field, at which point Golver and Continus merged their forces and routed the remaining Imperial Forces.

Upon the entrance of Golver and Marius into Levna in 1,056, conflict immediately started to brew. Marius, now perceiving himself as a traitor in the eyes of the people, committed suicide, at which point Golver declared himself Alta, refusing to reinstate the council now that the power was his own. Such a action isolated his Aristocratic allies, who went as far to invite Veletrix's hereditary nephew and preferred heir, Titunium II, into Levna. The following decade engulfed the island into civil war, until finally, Titunium achieved a decisive victory against his uncles antagonist. Titunium II, declaring himself the Levanii Megos Alta, went about a horrifying purge of the traitorous aristocracy, until 1070, when he became ill, and passed away. The late Emperor was succeeded by his hereditary son, Severus I, a military commander within the army. Intent on continuing the successes of the past, Severus began western and northern wars, driving both civilized and uncivilized factions into submission, until finally himself was killed on the field of his greatest victory. Following in the memory of Titunium II, Severus passed the throne unto his son, Severus II, who famously brought the Empire into a renaissance of art and culture, constructing massive buildings in peace time, and massive armies in war time. Perhaps Severus' II most memorable moment was his victory at Belfen Field against a horde of Olefean tribal invaders, numbering in the hundred thousands. The victory was the last military act of the century, bringing forth a era of great peace and prosperity to the realm.

Sevrus the Great (II)

Upon the death of Severus II the Great at the turn of the century, the trading paths between North and South of the continent had fallen into the possession of the Levnaii state, bringing forth a great influx of affluence of wealth that would continue for twenty-six years, when the plague of war returned to the Empire.
