yes, something like this. so for example Poland defending German attack from Berlin will have +, but if germany attacks from Stettin, there wont be any bonus

I think that you should be able to choose between building Forts and forifications. Fortifications would be build against one border(like suggested before) Fortifications should be harder than fort, but fort would be affective from every attack direction.

Hmmm...why not? From a programming perspective, it doesn't seem like a
hard thing to do at all, since the game already is "aware" of what border
effects there are between provences. (if there is a river, uncrossable, etc).
Simply move the "fortification" level out of the sector-database and into
the borders list. They could even remove the "beach fortification" field
from the sector-database and save some space there, since a border-sitting
directional fortress would cover both land and beach fortification.

(not trying to give you a hard time - just that "it won't happen" responses
without any reasons given are...frustrating)

Maybe because Units statoined there will be dug-in (after some time), so maybe dug-in means they are building frontal fortifications. Just my thoughts.

Its not ww1

Oh, okay. So fortifications of any kind no longer work and should not be made at all simply because it is no longer World War One. Okay.

Idiot.

It would be much harder.

At the moment all fortifation and other province builds are stored on a province basis, and there's about 2000 (?) provinces. So there's about 2000 entries in the save file for stuff that's been built.

If fortifications were built on a province to another province basis, there'd need to be 2000X2000 entries for all the fortifications, which would be mean much larger savegames. (I know not all provinces are land, but there's still a lot). Not to mention a major overhall of the AI, playtesting, redoing all the scenarios and all that stuff.
