I have been going on about this since forever but I am not happy with the way fortifications and dug-in bonus is represented in HOI3 and earlier versions. I know this simplistic system is "easy" to implement but it is a less than satisfactory approach.

I basically think the current systems of Forts and Dug-in should be improved and that a third system of semi-permanent field-fortifications that cost some resources should be available to build at a cost. I know the AI would be bad at using such a system in HOI3 but maybe this can be fixed for HOI4?

- Having 360 degree fortifications that *never* can be dismantled is just unrealistic.
- Soldiers would dig in and prepare their defensive positions long after 10 days had passed using local resources.
- Most of the time in WWII soldiers would wait and defend fortified lines just like in WWI. Just because we mostly read about fuild, armoured, mobile battles does not mean that 95% of the time soldiers were sitting idle, most of the time near their field fortifications.
- Engineers can provide services to defensive positions that regular formations can't provide. Tank trenches, mines, concrete positions that cost IC and resources, etc.
- The reason ports and harbours weren't assaulted directly was coastal artillery. Why should I build them when they don't fire on invading ships? All you have to do is invade in an adjacent province unless you are defending an island. Make coastal fortifications useful on a long coastal stretch and make them fire on invading ships.
- Will rivers of 10 to 250 meters width have the same defensive capabilites in HOI4 of will there be major and minor rivers.
- I suppose Shore Bombardment should be looking into, lowering movement speed, suppressing units, etc.

I really think that defensive constructions are one of the most overlooked and underrated issue in the entire HOI series and would strongly recommend the devs to look into this before putting all features in place.

As an example...

I really wish this book was available in English but it only exists in Swedish as far as I know:

http://www.tradera.com/item/341315/201394455/alarm-i-atlantvallen

If you read it you realize how incomplete the features of Shore Bombardment and Coastal Fortifications are in HOI3.

A couple of thousand tanks in each nations arsenal and millions of troops in trenches but hey, lets focus everything on the tanks...
