I was just playing a game as Muscovy, when I got absolutely destroyed by the Ottomans whilst I was fighting Ming. I was tempted to start as an Orthodox Ottomans, prioritising expansion north to be able to culture switch and form Russia, to get their swathes of claims, juicy ideas, better government and much more agreeable shade of green.

From this point I’d be pretty much unstoppable in the east, and likely the world. I was just wondering how viable a strategy this is, and- if anyone on here has attempted this play through before- what dates and time frames I should be aiming for to put myself in the best position, (and if it would also be possible to couple this with the relentless push east achievement).

As far as I know, you only get the Tsardom government form if you have been a Principality before founding Russia. Therefore, I would suggest not to take the decision to make Constantinople your capital as this decision includes becoming an empire, preventing you from becoming a Principality.

edit: Also, this may be relevant, you can only get the cossack units if your tech group is 'Eastern' (eastern european in this case)

Ah, so it’s somewhat more complicated than I was initially hoping- do you have any suggestions as to what would be the most painless method to become a principality; I’m not even sure how you’d go about this.

I think you just need to 1. stay a duchy or kingdom and 2. have russian culture. Then you can take a decision which changes your government form to 'Russian Principality' just as the decisions available to form merchant/oligarchic republics etc.

It is not really complicated, but you should definitely not hit the button that makes Constantinople your capital.

Edit: To become a Principality, it may be necessary to be Orthodox as well (not sure about this). But as you plan to go Orthodox anyway, this should not be a problem for you.

Ah; that’s okay then, I’ll mess around in the console a bit when I’m home to check out what I’d need to do.
Thanks for all the advice :)
