The 'pagan' umbrella is a bit generic and I object to it. Pagan is a Christian term applied to ancient polytheistic religions. It even comes from paganus, which is basically Latin for redneck or bogan. More specifically, the Roman Empire's official religion was Sol Invictus, but there were a great number of other religions including Mithra and the Imperial Cult (which was encouraged for obvious reasons).

Also, I would imagine the minority of Christians that would object to a Muslim Roman title (which historically existed; the Sultanate of Rum is the Sultanate of Rome, duh) would also want to censor history due to the Crusades and Holy Wars, homosexuality, heresy, etc...

You only need to be Christian. Which is why you can happily enforce Nestorianism in the Empire. ^^ Or for some ridiculous reason Fraticelli XD

No. It's illegal in Germany, Poland, Hungary, Lithuania and Brazil and that's pretty much it as far as strange censorship fetishism goes.

You're talking about pretty late in Roman history though. They were pretty pagan in the beginning. Even after the partial switch to the more centralised cults, they're still entirely within the pagan umbrella. The fact that the umbrella is kinds insulting doesn't change that.

It would probably be more correct to say they were polytheistic, because calling them pagan is basically insulting them in Latin. But being anal about political correctness doesn't go anywhere, so yes. They were pagan.

Personally I think any ruler should be able to form the Roman Empire provided the control Rome and have a King or higher rank. The resulting faction would be called the Roman Empire and both the ERE and HRE would have a CB against it as well as it having a CB against them. This CB would make it so that the loser has their Emperor title revoked as well as a large prestige loss, or gain if you win, and an inability for anyone to form the lost title for 100 years. Holding the title of Roman Emperor also makes you extremely disliked by the other claimed Emperors of Rome (ERE, HRE) since you are basically saying they no longer have any legal power. This would mean that if you want you can create the Kingdom of Italy and instantly claim yourself Emperor but you will then have to face the wrath of two angry Emperors, or you could build up a massive nation that is a worthy successor of Rome and proclaim yourself a new Rome and then send your armies into war to destroy the pretenders.

The Roman Empire was Pagan until a civil war turned it into Christian. So I don't see why turning it Islamic is insulting.

OTOH, what I consider as insulting is that one of the chief enemies of the Romans (Turks) are allowed to form it. IMO, reforming Roman Empire should be restricted to Latins and Greeks.

I doubt the rest of the Europe would easily accept heathens speaking a totally foreign tongue as their emperors just because they called themselves Kaiser-i-Rum.

you can just cheat and once you get the required duchies, cheat your religion to christianity (use religion orthodox), form it, and then go back to whatever it was before.
