Forming Malaya with Majapahit

So I started a game where I'm trying to form Malaya with Majapahit. I have two questions.

1) when it says I need to control all of Malaya or all of Sumatra what exactly do they mean? Are these geographic regions or cultural regions?

2) Portugal just came in and took some provinces on sumatra before I could. Does this mean if I want to form Malaya I will have to kick out portugal?

There is no such thing as cultural region.

Yup you have to kick them out.

It means the Island of Sumatra and the Malayan peninsula.

When it refers to a region like that, there's a Regions mapmode you can check. I don't know if either of those includes the outlying islands, for example, so then you might need to check that. But what Bragi said is correct.
