Forming Kingdom of Brittany

When I wanted to form Kingdom of Brittany, I was unable to, since I needed 2 duchies. I already owned duchy of Brittany, but there are no other duchies in Brittany as far as I could see?
Should I just own a random duchy title to form the kingdom of Brittany?

Pretty much. Ireland, Wales, Cornwall are the usual marks.

Brittany is base Celtic culture, same as Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and Cornwall. The stray counties inhabiting the dejure Ireland and Wales make for easy targets. Cornwall is sometimes independent or stray in the many wars England experiences, as well.

I suppose you could take the Duchy of the Isles off Scotland.

It doesn't really matter where you get it, but the islands are easier to defend than taking a duchy title that the king of France is going to want back.

Any duchy will do, and those in Ireland, Wales, and Cornwall are the easiest to get. You could try a holy war in northern Spain too if you're up to it.

Northern spain not, those countrys are still too big, for my army. Just got about 800 men...
But will take Ireland or sumethin , if you guys say any duchy will do.

Any duchy will do. I've played a few Britanny campaigns, in one of the playthroughs I married into the duchy of Aquantine, murdered the siblings of my heirs wife, and waited til the son took over.
It was magnificent!

Though the disadvantage of murdering is it costs a lot, and it can ruin your relations with your vassals, etc.

Marry your firstborn son to a reigning independent duchess or queen (though I guess a multiduchess with primogeniture or a vassal queen may be worth the vassalage).

Alternatively, this can work with matrilineal marriage of a foreign male heir to your female heir when you invite the guy to your court when he has a quarrel with his father (gifts for courtiers cost only 20 gold normally).

If I've decided to go for Iberia in a Brittany game sometimes I'll save up a bunch of cash and go hard on the Balearic Isles.

Trying to take over the Duchy of Normandy piece by piece every time England has a civil war is another good way to form Brittany.

I find that you can USUALLY marry one of the sisters of the King of Navarra, and then when he dies (helped along by you, perhaps..) you can war to put your spouse on the throne. Who needs the Kingdom of Brittany when you can be the Breton King of Navarra?

Or you can use that to create Brittany, and then re-split the kingdoms back up if you want /shrug

Take Cornwall. You'll need it as a landing base for when you begin your Brythonic Reconquista of the Britain.

Seriously, de Jure drift everything from England to Orkney into Brittany. Then turn your focus to Ireland and subjugate them as revenge for the 500s when they drove your people to request Saxon aid.

You can try pushing into France during a civil war, but know that you'll swiftly be gobbled up by the king once it's over.

I took Anjou, with a weak claim. I only needed a single province to usurp the duchy, since Anjou consists of only two provinces. Then I made the kingdom. So you'll need some money saved up. Of course, in this game I was RPing as a dynasty of noble knights who refused to take part in intrigues, and this complicated things. I could have fabricated a claim instead, or murdered a few people to be in line for the throne.

SIDENOTE: Alan of Brittany, the only listed Breton king in the game's history files, was granted the title of king by the Holy Roman Emperor in real life. Apparently it didn't succeed him.
Salomon of Brittany was also called king, but only because of his pompous manner, and was not a de jure king.

Real Bretons steal French duchies to make their Kingdom. Go for Normandy or Anjou. :nods:

Yep, any 2 duchies are fine. Even a Celtic character who didn't have the duchy of Brittany could form the kingdom if he had 50%+ of the land and any 2 duchy titles. Same goes for any kingdom.

Funny, I just started a game as Brittany. I used my chancellor to fabricate some claims on southern Ireland.. and I kept doing this to expand until I could usurp a title, then: bam. King.

I also have the requirements to form the Kingdom of Ireland... and I also kept close ties with France through marriage alliances in-order to ensure my survival against larger nations.

Most recently I have found that I had a weak claim on the entire Kingdom of Denmark! So I launched it and called in France to help me.. I was outnumbered alone but with them I captured it. So right now I am the King of Denmark, Ireland and Brittany... and my ruler is Irish... however I do have Sunset Invasion installed... dun-dun-dun.

Very true. The Irish counties belong to the same culture group and have the same religion. Politically, Ireland is also very divided so making claims in there and then conquering those lands is a good idea.

In my best Britanny game I made marriage between the Duke Konan in the beginning with Adelais de Ponthieu. The Duke himself was conquering Ireland. These two got several children including a daughter with genius trait. This daughter became to be an excellent diplomat with diplomacy value at 30. At the same time, I submitted to the Kingdom of England and married her to William the Conqueror´s bastard son. I did this because France was divided between Kingdom of France and Kingdom of Aquitaine.

After William´s death I had Britanny and about 3 or 4 duchies in Ireland when the era of civil wars started in England. The last thing that my duke this was to start a war to make his son-in-law the king of England. The duke died during the war making his heir, his daughter with a genius trait, the Duchess of Britanny because of elective monarchy. I won the war and after that my character was ultimately the duchess of 6 duchies and her husband was the King of England and it was a matrilinear marriage. They were also each other´s lovers.
