Well I started the game as Bavaria and so far I have been very lucky! :D Bohemia allied with Burgundy, so Burgundy has been pulling in Bohemia to wars with France which somehow Bohemia&Burgundy have been losing badly in. Austria should be known as "Austria the idle"; they aren't really doing much. In fact as it stands now I am larger than Bohemia and with my vassal armies combined I could stop an Austrian invasion. I've also vassalized enough electors to make myself emperor once the current one dies.

Not that forming Germany as Burgundy is really much of an option. Or is it at all? That's beside the point.

It is very much an option. The three easiest countries to form Germany with (imho) are Bohemia, Austria, and Burgundy. You just have to shift culture...and you can even form Prussia on the way :p

4 - What is the best method for intra-HRE expansion?

Thanks in advance. :)

As long as you're a member of the Empire, the Emperor won't interfere in your wars when you have a valid CB. This makes expanding in the Empire MUCH easier. Of course, yes, you could always become Emperor, though if you want to destroy the Empire, this might become problematic later on.

IMO it`s better to leave the empire even if you are in the middle of it. That`s becouse the emperor will make formal requests on conquered provinces in which you don`t have cores, and if you refuse you get a stab hit, emperor gets CB on you, and those provinces get a modifier that makes them useless. On top of that there`s imfamy, so it`s just not worth it. It can be avoided if you get cores but that`s difficult, even some of the missions don`t give them. E.g. Brandenburgs mission to conquer Pommerania only gives you +1 stab. The other way is to get them by PUs and inheriting. Being the emperor helps but it`s hard to become one with one of the smaller countries.
It`s definitely harder to form Germany than Italy!

I've formed Germany starting with Brandenberg and forming Prussia first. The biggest delay was getting land 30 to take the prussian reforms - took years!

Don't discount being HRE. You get lots of free wars if you respond as often as possible to call to arms go from fellow electors - this keeps prestige and tradition up; allows you smack down other wouldbe great powers (Fr, Aust, Russia, etc) with a much bigger army and manpower pool than you would have otherwise; HRE also reduces BB faster
+wars are a lot of fun

I also hired 2 theologians (6), just prior to 1500 which let me start the reformation and allowed a relatively painless conversion

Yeah, HRE emperor has so many cheese abilities/bonus it is almost ridiculous (even though I nerfed them in my mod). Once you manage to vassalize three or four electors, you are almost guaranteed to be emperor all the time. Unlike Burg or Aust, Bav/Brandenberg won't get any female rulers, neither -- so you will never loose it. Admittingly, there won't be much challenge once you are the emperor, but hey.....In my Brandenburg -> Prussia game, I let Austria colonize all the way to have border with Tibet... Now it is my vassal, I don't know what I shall do with it.

BTW, you can also turn Hansa into monarchy after activating good missions/decisions. Then, you can abuse PU as much as you like.

Currently burning infamy (very slowly because of all the non-cored imperial territory) and looking for an excuse to PU/war+annex Madgeburg and Pomerania who hold the last 2 cities that I need to form Germany. Overall, it looks like I'm on track for Germany sometime in the 1590s-1650s.

Lol dat Burgundy. If they don't implode (or keep expanding, God forbid) it will make for an awesome war when you form Germany.

Well, they haven't stopped yet! And yes, Burgundy vs. Massive German superpower wars are very epic; I was on the Burgundy side of one vs. a massive Bavaria and I barely won because the battles on the alps made me have tons of war exhaustion.

Anyways thanks so much for the help! I actually managed to form Germany as Bavaria! :D

There are two problems for fast forming Germany as Brandenburg. Emperor and the unlawful territory infamy penalty. And their missions are very under-powered, don't have any core-giving missions, but the missions require couple of conquests.
Bavaria on the other hand is much wealthier, and has core missions on Franken, Ansbach, Pfalz and Worms. And if you get lucky as I did, you will get "Claims on your rivals" as first event in the game (ofc I saved and play every Bavaria game from that save )
Also if you are in HRE you WILL NOT get random conquer minor/neighbour/province mission, and boundary dispute wont fire if the province is capital, which in the case of many HRE minors is...

Best answer is PU's, vassals and vassal annexation missions, or leaving the HRE to get conquest missions. I usually mix the two, using the "leave HRE" once I become powerful enough to hold out on my own.
If you play with Brandenburg, the moment TO turns Prussia, RM them and claim throne, DOW and form PU. If you are playing TO, use the random conquest missions to your advantage. If Bavaria rely on PU, vassalisation. It will probably take more time, but having almost all of southern germany cored gets you invincible. Just Befrien Habsburgs and/or Bohemia with RM, and wait for a time to strike. Austria can be dealt with realeasing Tyrol and Styria and even vassalising/PU's on the two afterwards.

I am playing game with Saxony where I'm trying to form Germany, but it's bloody hard, 10 years into the game, I just sit and wait, I war-forced SaxeLUneburg into PU but thats it, I am forced to sit and wait for something so I can move on. But it will be fun Saxony-> Prussia-> Germany game I hope.

In my current Brandenburg game, I was revoked elector after like 20 years in the game. Got it back, lost it again... so I never became emperor, but conquered almost all of Poland and TO right before TO became Prussia which I forced PU on right away. Was still fun. After that game, I think going the usual "Become Emperor and roflstomp anything around" is far too easy, and far less fun as well.
