I am playing HOI3 with FTH, SFE and FTM installed. I have successfully conquered Poland and want to move an armygroup consisting of 3 armies, 10 corps and 27 divisions from Poland to Western Germany to prepare for the fall of France.

The army group (5X) is NOT attached to a to a 6X HQ. There are no air or naval units attached. While having the army group (5X) selected I clicked the AI button on the left side of the unit info panel which opened up the Stance options. I selected Prepare stance then right-clicked on a province then started the timer at max speed.

I waited for a week of game time and nothing happened, all subordinate units sat there with "No orders" status.

Can you not move formations like this? is the only recourse to move divisions individually and manually? What did i miss?

Thank you in advance for any insight you can give!

Has nothing to do with AI stance -- in fact, you need to turn off AI control for the Army Group to make it do what you want.

On manual control, select the Army Group you want to move. Click on the green bar just above the list of subordinate armies -- that will add those armies (and their subordinate corps, etc., wherever they are located) to the selection. Then just right click the destination province and the Army Group and its all subordinate units will start moving there from their respective current locations. (Or, do ctrl-right click to strategically deploy them to their destination -- much faster, but chews up more supplies.)

I guess the next question would be, once the units get to their place, use the AI and use Defensive or preparation stance to get them deployed along the border?

Frankly, I can't abide the decisions the AI makes (it seems to know nothing of actual tactics, much less how to swing a right hook through the Netherlands, and executes attacks that bleed God-awful amounts of manpower). I would just move the units to the locations where I think it's best and go from there on manual control.

Do the same thing with the Army level HQ and move them to near the place you want the corps' within the specific army to be stationed.

Then do the same with the Corps' HQs once the whole army gets to where you sent it.

I wouldn't stack deeper than Corps per province since that tends to cause supply issues.

After some experimentation I found I could get Armies and Army groups to place units acceptably by specifically marking the hex i wanted occupied then unmarking after the need to actively hold it had passed. Provided your frontage is not obscene it does a passable job of deploying in depth for most situations i find myself in; moving into preparatory position for an attack or transitional defense. I get enough micro-managing dealing with the clunky UI that going further into lower-level detail would make stabbing myself repeatedly in the eye with a pungi stick more attractive.
