Playing as an emperor I managed to invite an heir of a foreign duchy to my court. Succession law in that duchy was agnatic-cognatic primogeniture (oldest son inherits), I gave the heir a duchy in my own realm expecting to gain the lands when the heir's father dies. As it turned out the heir had a son afterwards witch ended up gaining the expected duchy title.

Any ideas why the dukes son was passed over in succession and the title when to grandson instead?

Sounds like the Crown law of that Kingdom in question is set so titles can't pass out of the realm on succession. Inheritance Law is either "Free" or "Illegal" i think it is so if it's set for Illegal than titles cannot pass out of the realm on succession. Which is why the foreign heirs son took the title as he was next in line as his father was banned from succession.

The foreign realm had high crown authority and it indeed prevents titles going to an outsider, just checked. Thanx a lot!
