Is it just me, or this a new thing?
I tried Barcelona at the 1066 start and declared a De Jure war on the Hudids for one of the counties they have in De Jure Barcelona. I did this instead of a holy war explicitly to avoid the usual holy war gang bang from half of Iberia. Unfortunately for me, some of my Christian brethren were more foolish and declared separate holy wars for the Aragon Duchy.
Now, the Hudids have about 2k troops on a good day, and I had 4k. I felt pretty good about this. Then the rest of Iberia joined the Hudids' defensive holy wars and they all globbed together into a big 10k stack. In the stack, only the Hudids were hostile to me, the rest were neutral (which makes sense, since they weren't in my war). However, when the stack moved into the area I was sieging, I was forced to fight the whole thing, despite 80% of it being "neutral".
Am I crazy, or has it not always been this way? Either way it came as an unpleasant surprise.
