Russia sold the province to Ukraine for zero ducats, they lost their core.
To be fair, they weren't expecting the patch that let vassals declare independence.
Except Ukraine was not a vassal, the Soviet Union released Ukraine when it was broken by nationalist rebels and went bankrupt. However Russia was trying to re-vassalize the Ukraine which went south when the Ukranian government got broken by peasant rebels.
I still think that the Alliance could steamroll Russia and carpet siege them pretty quickly - they have the manpower but they didn't take Quality and they have inferior Eastern troops.
Yes, but they have the 'Nuclear Weapons' decision which, when pressed, results in an automatic game over for everybody.
But this might greatly increasy AE with China, Belarus, North Korea, Kazakhstan, Mongolia.

This is what really happened: 
Ukraine and Russia were allies with trade agreements and military access.
Ukraine got an event and took the Russian option instead of the EU option.
As a result Ukraines legitimacy dropped which caused pretender rebels to spawn.
The Pretender rebels occupied most of Ukrainian thus they could appoint a new leader and (in this case) government type.
Ukraine is no longer occupied by rebels but has -3 stability.
Russian nationalists spawn as a result and occupy Crimea.
Ukraine has new national modifiers, +1.0 legitimacy per year and +10% trade/production efficiency.
Alliance with Russia is broken, relations drop.
Crimea declares independence ... very quickly.
Ukraine makes a guarantee on Crimea to protect their core.
Russia makes a DoW on Crimea, using a claim CB which causes Russia to take an AE hit.
Ukraine and Russia are now at war.
NATO, an alliance that includes mostly Europe and Nth America warns Russia, and allies Ukraine.
Ukraine calls to arms the NATO leader USA. USA for the moment ignores the call to arms message.
What happens next? Probably:
Russia annexes Crimea, takes AE hit.
Russia offers peace demands: Ukraine revokes cores on Crimea, peace.
Ukraine with no money, a very small army and limited support from NATO (USA has too many loans and high WE from Afghanistan, most of Europe do not want to embargo Russia) accepts the peace offer.
War is over (call to arms message to USA is cancelled).
Russia gets +5 prestige and +50 AE (UN modifier for late games).
Sochi building disappears (one of the requirements are, you must have low AE).
Ukraine joins NATO coalition.
On a serious note this isn't funny, people have died in the Ukraine riots and we are all lucky war was never really started.

I really really really doubt war will start.
A lot of independent expert military/historian advisers, have all said that the cost of war would be too high for both sides and that they both have neither the room to drop their demands or take an steps backwards due to domestic and international reputations.
So the status quo will stay as it currently is, Russia with Crimea and NATO/USA with the rest of Ukraine. The governments will still use the "tough guy" speeches and tell you, they are going to keep on supporting the people in Crimea/Ukraine, to make sure laws and justice are upheld. But in reality they know the situation is a stalemate and that making peace is the best option.
We only have to wait for the Ukrainian troops to leave theirs bases in Crimea, and the peace demands to be sent.

You know all those missions that pop up when someone blocks your merchants and you get a show superiority CB? That was the CB Japan used.

Well, France for sure, but they haven't blobbed in a long time, no danger there, the HRE is toast and Austria is minute, the Ottomans lost a couple of huge wars and then all the vassals rebelled. Have to have fun where you can. I must be a sociopath, I've never felt bad invading any country, unless I lost.
I am pretty sure what will happen will be Ukraine will receive war subsidies from NATO, EU and USA which it will spend on buildings especially the Trade and Tax line.
After a period of time it will agree to release Crimea as an independent state, that state will agree to vassalisation under Russia.
Unless the USA or Russia gets monarch goes insane and then we are all screwed.
