Came upon a thought recently that a neat mechanic to introduce to republics are
1)event based options to create a mercenary navy, and/or land regiment to be hired out.
- This mirrors the mercenary regiments in Italy and Switzerland in the late middle ages, and the navy-for-hire scheme that Italian states developed during the crusade era specifically.Limited to Duchy/Kingdom level republics
2)These units have commanders that are either elected or appointed upon death by the current Doge/Whatever with a period of being able to bribe the Doge into siding with you.
3)The point of finding it desirable to either be/have a family member as the mercenary captain/admiral is that your family will get a portion of any gold spent by others to hire out the company. (With a bonus if you are the character) - along with some neat events that could pop up during the course of the adventure. (However, the player should be able to retire when they want/ if a AI mercenary captain/admiral gets elected Doge they should also retire from the position.
4)The mercenaries will have split loyalties of course, and if the kingdom hiring them out goes to war with the regiments home country, they would flip sides. (In the same way that sometimes the holy orders will leave your service if the leader decides to join a crusade in his own right. Happened to me before.
